Agree with the other reviewers, Yesenia and Tracy rock!!! I came in on Yesenia's off-day, but so happens she was on call and stayed on to take my last minute appointment. I also needed a color job, but Tracy was already fully booked that day, but somehow Yesenia and Tracy negotiated something between them that freed up sometime so Tracy can color my hair... thank God!!! It was 3pm by the time Yesenia handed me over to Tracy, who had not even had lunch yet, but still Tracy took meticulous care to make sure my hair was well colored. Also want to say special thanks to Tracy for being soo super nice. My scalp was super sensitive that day, and she was wonderfully sweet to me. Well... I really wanted to get my hair colored here but the receptionist kept putting me on hold this evening when I was simply trying to find out availability for this Sunday. So I have been getting my hair cut by different salons for YEARS now and I never stick with one person or one salon because I have never really been happy with the results. Until I found Frankie at Keter Salon. The single BEST hair cut I have ever gotten in my years of "professional" hair cuts. And it's not just the cut, it's the whole experience. I walk in and am welcomed by the SUPER cute and REALLY friendly receptionists and asked if I want tea or water. I change into these really comfy, soft robes so you don't get hair in your clothes (YES!), and then the 1 1/2 hair cut begins. She sits me down and we talk about what I want and what I DON'T want, and long term goals for my hair. Frankie treats my hair like art.. not even kidding.. To the point that I have not only been to her 4 times now, with bang trims in-between cuts, but I have brought my MOM in to her, a couple of friends and soon my sister. She works WONDERS with ALL types of hair. No one has ever been able to tame my super thick unruly wavy hair. She wont just give you a BOMB hair cut, she will totally transform your hair and the way you feel about it. Not to mention the awesome products that they have. I've been back to see Aviva several times since I wrote the review, and I'm still a very happy customer. I went back today for just a little trim, since I'm trying to grow my hair out. I was expecting to come out looking pretty much the same, since I just wanted a trim, but Aviva managed to make my hair feel totally new even though she only took off about half an inch. She used a new technique to thin my hair out, and I'm loving the texture it gave me! Lili did a phenomenal job with my hair today. I have copper hair and it was looking drab with some grown out hi lights. I want to write this review about Aviva. When I moved to Berkeley I had difficulty finding a great haircut. Aviva recut my hair after a disaster. I brought in pictures of Sophia Loren and others who do not look like me (I have very fine hair that I was struggling to grow long) and Aviva actually gives me a Sophia Loren-looking style that time and every time since! She has helped me as I'm re-growing my hair long, and I just love the easy to manage cuts and color. Aviva definitely has a gift for cutting, styling and color. She is also very warm, genuinely caring, and fun to share the hour with. I also like the salon. The front desk is wonderful and the salon is stylish and clean. I first went to Keter for styling my hair for my wedding. Despite booking rather last minute, Rebecca did a stellar job. When I read reviews I'm always looking for WHO to go to because, for hair, it's more about the talent of the individual stylist than about the salon. Tifani is wonderful and I highly recommend her. She has a lot of really great training which keeps her styles fresh and contemporary. I really appreciate how well she listens and is able to execute my wishes (very important). I usually don't bother writing reviews since most of the places I go are average, and what's there to comment on about mediocrity? Well, Keter was definitely a pleasant surprise and I can go on about my experiences in salons in and around the Bay Area and getting unsatisfactory results time after time, but I will spare the details. In short, I wasted a whole crap-ton of $$$ the last few years living in the Bay Area. All I have to say is: Sam, you are the man. He gave me the cut I wanted and added his own flare to it while making sure they were within the bounds of my liking. So far, I am very happy with the cut but I think the true test of a good haircut is how it stands the toll of time. If it looks good in 3 weeks, I will give Sam 5 stars so stay tuned! Oh! and I LOVE that this place is sans the pretentious air of most high-end salons. The place is really nice really professional my stylist was really nice. However if you don't have straight Caucasian hair I wont recommended. I came in for a blow-out usually after a blow-out done by a professional my hair look awesome.I called a head and they told me that blowout was 55$ SUPER. I came in with my hair already wash at home with my products the stylist did my blow-out and I look like a frizzy mushroom that just came from a run on a storm. So I was like maybe lest flatten it a bit. She us the flattening iron and well it look a bit better. I ask here if she cut cut the 1/3 of and inch. If you don't have experience cutting curly hair don't do it. When she was done I was this as good as its going to get so I was like whatever. Ended up paying 188$ and doing it again when I got home. With oil and some heat protection. The place its clean and you can get same day appointment with is great if your in a hurry but it might take more time at the end. read more

my haircut with sam was the best thing that happened to me all week. also, the sweet man at the front desk, i think his name is ramero - he is a gem. the only reason i gave it 4 starts and not 5 is because i got really bad vibes from the woman that was supposed to cut my hair, anita. she seems like a total pill. i'm so glad that she had to go to lunch rather than keep my appointment because what sam completed was nothing short of art! This is my new favorite place. After bopping around to multiple salons and stylists but never feeling the urge to commit, this is where I'll be returning to again and again. Based on a recommendation from a friend I made an appointment with Jennifer. Right away, Jennifer was very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable in helping me plan a pretty drastic cut. She helped me decide on a cut and color based on the look and feel I was after. And she did a terrific job! My first time a Keter Salon was an unexpected treat. First, the location is ideal - next door to Bette's, my favorite breakfast place in the East Bay. The sun-drenched loft is relaxing and elegant in a homey sort of way. My hairstylist, Tifani, was incredible. She took the time to talk to me not just about what I wanted my cut to look like, but what I needed it to do. In my case: look good with minimal styling for my day-to-day at the office, pull out of my face easily for running and work into an up-do for two back-to-back weddings. The cut she came up with did all three and was nothing short of brilliant. It works with my hair (fine, straight, limp) instead of against it. She took me at my word that I wasn't going to style it much and explained the couple of products she used but didn't push them on me. I don't think I've ever received this many compliments on a hair cut. And since I just had two other stylists do up-dos for those weddings, a bunch of the compliments were from professionals. Even my husband said it was his favorite cut he's seen in our nine years together. It's funky without being weird and styled without being overdone. I love it and will def be back! Oh, and I almost forgot that Tifani colored my hair too. She matched my dark roots and pulled that all the way through and then accented with low-lights just as I like. It's probably the cleanest dye-job I've ever had. My only complaint would be that I'd like the low-lights to be a little more noticeable. (They kind of blend.) Keter is a great salon and I highly recommend asking for Tifani, especially if you are looking for something new and need a creative and thoughtful stylist to help you figure out what that is. read more

Before walking into Keter Salon, my naturally very curly and frizzy hair was so damaged from flat-ironing for the past two years! My ends were all split and pieces were shorter in the back from too much heat damage. Thank goodness I met Yesenia! She started me on deep conditioning treatments and gave me a healthy hair cut that transformed the way my hair looks and feels! If you have curly, frizzy hair that you spend hours out of your week blow drying or flat-ironing, I recommend to you the Keratin conditioning treatment. I got a text and phone call this past week confirming my hair appointment. Arrived in plenty of time for the appointment but unfortunately, they had no record of it. I showed them the text confirmation and my response. They had no explanation and offered no solution. I responded by shrugging my shoulders, "and so... I should just go home?" And the response from the receptionist was, "I guess so." I was dumbstruck. By the time I arrived home, I was pretty darn angry with the way she (didn't) handle the mistake. I called them but the response was as thoughtless as before. "What would you like me to do? Would you like to speak with the stylist?" I asked why. "Well, it wasn't her fault." I agreed it was not. Nor was it Roxy's responsibility to offer a resolution. The receptionist couldn't think of anything... and its isn't my place to think of one for her or my business. My guess is the chairs are rented by the stylist and the reception desk has no investment in the quality of customer care or consequences. I feel very badly for Roxy. She is not well represented there. If I were the receptionist, I would have discussed the error with the stylist to come up with a reasonable solution to recover the customer satisfaction. At the very, very least... how about offering some appointment times in the immediate future? Wow, that sure didn't occur to that receptionist. I certainly wouldn't have let the customer leave without offering a solution. I really felt like I was simply disregarded. And there doesn't appear to be anyone in charge there to right the situation. They must have a lot of business and can afford to lose some. read more

i'm not sure what i'm supposed to be rating here -- the stylist, or the salon -- but i suppose i can write a little about my experience and let you try it for yourself. here goes. my hair: thick, straight, and inclined toward inertia -- boring. but after years of unsatisfying mid-length haircuts in varying price ranges, savanna has finally made me a faithful one-stylist woman. playful but skillful, she adept at both the classic and twists toward the avant garde. not only does she know what works well, but what works well on ME; my trust in her compels me to be more adventurous than i would with anyone else. my only regret is that since she's gotten me to like my short hair so much, i'll never see what magic she conjure on me with a longer style. (maybe i can live vicariously through one of you?) my hair now has texture and shape even on the days i run out of the house unkempt, and my life is rife with haircut complements every six weeks. as inherently distrustful of products as i am, i've been convinced to try a few. kerastase oleo-relax is fantastic, taming the errant frizzies while adding little weight other than a healthy shine. hell, it even smells nice. i've tried a couple of others, but not with any dedication where i'm inclined to comment on them. the salon itself is clean, comfortable, and fairly upscale, as is expected in the frustratingly popular fourth street district, so book appointments early (though not on the day i'm going, thanks!) and allow yourself plenty of time to park. the staff are all very nice (offering you a drink when you arrive) and accomodating (doing their best to fit me in when my schedule goes haywire). all in all, savanna is an expensive habit, but one i am perfectly willing to indulge. i'm thrilled to have finally developed a clear and communicative relationship with a talented stylist -- as it should be. read more

Now, I probably should take away 1 star because of how expensive it is... but when it comes to my curly hair, Yesenia deserves 5 stars! I have never stuck with a hairstylist for this long in my whole life. I even turned my mom on to her (she has even thicker, curlier hair than mine). I am extremely picky about hair cuts, and styles. I like nice layers so my hair isn't a pyramid, but not so extreme that I have a mullet. Yesenia always does an awesome job, I put all my trust in to her! I had a great experience at Keter Salon. I have been highlighting my hair for too many years and it was dried out, fried and would not hold low-lights. Also, my hair is very fine (not fine in a good way). I have been wanting to go darker, but every stylist I've been to just tells me that my hair is too damaged to hold color. I went to Wayne at Keter based on a recommendation. He was incredible! He first spent time listening to me about what my hair is like and asked questions about the history of what I've done to my hair. He agreed that darkening my hair would be a challenge, but devised a plan to remedy my damage and get some color on there. He helped me pick the right shade to go for my skin tone, did two damage treatments and told me how they worked into my hair. He did a fantastic job and I left as a brunette with shiny, manageable hair. He also did a cut, which was very simple, so nothing to rave about nor complain about there. After the styling he took me outside into the sun to see if "we" liked the shade. The whole experience felt like we were working together on a project instead of the usual approach stylists have taken with my hair. I left with some Kerastase product tubes to help heal the core/shaft of my hair that are working well. I highly recommend Wayne. The salon is simple and nice and clean. I thought the employees were friendly. They reccomend ariving 15 minutes early to park. Park in the lot by Z- Gallery which can be difficult later in the day, but easy in the morning.Over all a great experience! read more

This review is for Cailey. I've been to quite a few east bay hair spots from super over-priced (Festoon) to frugal-ish (Vero Salon) and I got the best haircut I've had in California-- hell, one of the top five haircuts of my life-- this afternoon. I called this morning and they fit me in. I had a weird a-line bob that I wasn't happy with, and I wanted a pixie cut. Longer in the front, flattering to my face, feathery and feminine. Cailey is fresh from Keter's apprenticeship program and did an awesome job. She made me feel comfortable, listened to me, and most importantly, understood. The pixie is a kick ass cut when done right, but done poorly it can be a disaster. I think it also helped that she's about my age (early to mid-twenties) and really got what I was going for. Not that old-school pixies aren't rad, but I didn't want to look like Mia Farrow. Or butch. Very reasonably priced (in large part because I didn't do any color, I think.) The only part that wasn't first rate was the obligatory upsell of bumble and bumble products. Though I guess it worked because I got some sumotechwax stuff to run thorough my damp hair. I have long, fine hair that has no body or curl. guess what that is what I am always trying to get, with little success. I am writing this review after 5 months of satisfaction with Balayage. Tracy is a strategist! Blondes of my kind are difficult to color...unfortunately. I have a whirlwind of blonde in the front and dirty dark coloring in the back. It is a mess. Tracy helped normalize my genetic troubles, but also made me look like a beachy surf queen liken to that of Giselle or Jennifer...well, at least my hair did. Did I mention I didn't have my hair colored since then? I did this prior to a trip to Italy and haven't really needed color til now. Worth the $! I love how my highlights dont look perfect which is just what I asked for and I appreciate her sincere concern with my hair! She really listened to what I wanted. Excellent service! My only complain is that balayage begins at $150 and I received mine for $75... which was only available since I was a hair model for Jordan because she was in training.
