Honestly, it has taken me a while to write this-- I had an appointment with Tony a few months back. My hair is mid-length, and I have struggled with growing it, as well as having a very dry textured hair. It is an insecurity of mine, and I go to hair salons to feel pampered and leave with a good feeling. When I sat down in Tony's chair, he instantly had a non-professional attitude, and began touching my hair like it was some kind of monster. He said things like "it's completely dead", and "I don't know how much we can do with this". The only solution he was open to giving was to cut it all off, or buy the incredibly expensive shampoo/conditioner the salon was promoting. I do not want to do either. Instead of creating a safe and welcoming experience while cutting and washing my hair, Tony seemed ambivalent to even touch it, and showed no excitement or warmth while speaking to me and working on my hair. I hope other stylists do not have his attitude, and they are able to give the client a good experience from beginning to end. I have gone to other salons after this and have had no problem with my hair, nor has the stylist. If you have any insecurities about your hair style, do not go to this stylist. Aviva at Keter Salon is my new favorite stylist! Not only is she my namesake, but she has given me the most killer haircut ever! My whole life I've had long boring hair past my shoulders that I was too uptight to ever keep in anything but a bun. A couple months ago I finally decided to chop it off and get a pixie cut--something easy but also stylish. After a bunch of research and soul searching to figure out exactly the cut I wanted, I contacted Aviva about setting up an appointment. She let me show her a bunch of Do and Don't pictures, and was incredibly enthusiastic about being a part of what I consider a very big (and pretty scary) change. Aviva helped me feel confident the whole time that I was going to get the cut that I asked for, nothing too avant-garde or edgy. I know that stylists become stylists because they are creative people that want to use hair as a canvas for their work, but often I feel that they are less-than-willing to listen to what their clients desire, and would rather just do with your hair whatever they think is fun. Aviva totally listened to what I wanted, worked her magic, and gave me a cut that was a perfect synthesis of everything I had shown her. For weeks after my haircut I was getting compliments from everyone, my friends and family, my coworkers, my bosses, even total strangers! My hair has since grown out wonderfully, and I'm going back today to get it cut again. I encourage everyone to come by Keter and get a cut by Aviva. Besides being a great stylist, she's a cool girl, and charges totally reasonable prices. I have not been to Keter since early spring '09 before Anita went out on maternity leave. Prior to that I'd been getting my hair cut and colored (once) by Anita and was very pleased. The prices are what you expect for a nice place on 4th street in Berkeley which means, expensive. I wasn't comfortable trying another stylist there while Anita was out and in the meantime found another stylist, but if cash isn't an issue and you need a solid place to try - Keter never let me down. My pocketbook is just slightly happier now and my hair still looks good. read more

I want to say that KETER salon is the best. They have great customer service and a wonderful atmosphere. I have really wild curly hair, I went in for a haircut and the stylist there named Yesenia was very welcoming. I told her that on ocasion blow dry my hair straight and I needed a cut that would accomodate both styles, she was so helpful and made me feel so comfortable. SERVICE! I recently called Keter to have a mens haircut and beard trim. They don't usually offer beard work because its really a barber issue but here's what happened. I was handled on the phone graciously with courtesy and caring. I was communicated back to via email on the question of the beard trim. I was greeted nicely and professionally and offered a cup of tea when I showed up. I was a little early but not made to wait long. Tony listened to what I had to say, gave me a great haircut and trimmed my beard without going too far. Service is often hard to come by, even when the business is trying. I've found my new stylist Tony! I just moved to SF from Los Angeles and after a massive hunt for my new salon I called Keter. I'd gotten a haircut years ago here while an undergrad at Cal. Well as fate would have it, I called and asked for a same day appt. My caution went out the door- I was in desperate need of a cut! Tony was available and I'm so effin glad. He's super patient, doesn't rush you, great listener and is smart about his cutting. He's logical in his reasons and that's what I loved. I don't like the fluff - tell me how it is. Well he said honey we've got some damage control to take care of. He still kept my hair long as I wanted but cut enough to get rid of the damaged ends and give me amazing style. The price is super reasonable and for his work I would've paid double in LA. Toned color: I also went back a week later to tone my color. My balayage was outgrown and I had uneven color - w that brassy orange coming out. Tony recommended toning it to soften the blonde and even out my natural brown. I went to Keter because of the great review on Tracy. I was really happy I went! My hair is pretty dark and I wanted to go light with highlights tracy did a great job! But I couldnt get used to how light it was so she told me to come back in and she'll fix with no charge , I was so happy and my hair came out great! Honestly it was nice before but going from dark to very light I guess I wasnt really ready for. With all that wk done i barely had any breakage. Tracy is the best!!!! I'm weird and picky about my hair. I don't care how short it is or what color as long as it's a bit unusual. Joanna did a great cut on my first visit and did my color. I wasn't entirely excited about the color as it was a bit on the natural/boring/conservative side (probably the better side to err on in most cases). She got me in again two days later and lightened everything again. Now I am super-excited about my hair and leave it down all the time (something I've never done unless it was too short to put up). Moved here roughly 4 months ago from LA. I've been searching for a salon ever since. Most are overpriced pretentious dumps. I stumbled upon a review for Keter Salon and decided to check it out. Came in for a free consultation. They were really sweet. I didn't have to wait long, they offered a drink and really listened to what I had to say. Its a very nice location on 4th street, the place is really clean and nicely decorated. They also trimmed my bangs for free. Came in for my appointment later that week. Aviva, a new stylist at Keter did my hair. She fixed the horrid wretched mess of grown out color I had, cut off the damage still left me looking good. (Whereas 2 other salons I visited said there was no hope and to just cut it all off.) She's really nice and really talented. The only complaints I have are minimal: my neck and back were killing me from the hair washing chair, just didn't seem to be the right height for the sink...felt like my head was getting torn off my neck... some bad comb that was ripping my hair out, but she changed it right away. However, I don't think either of those are really her fault or bad styling. I'm just very short and that comb was a freak. It is more expensive then most other places I checked out around the East Bay, but significantly cheaper than places in SF. It cost me a little over $200 including tip but it was well worth it... People always say "its only hair, it'll grow back." But if your hair gets messed up, at the average rate of regrowth (half an inch a month), yes it'll grow back if you get it badly cut, but you'll also be wearing wigs and hats for the next year or two until then. I'm sure this will be my salon for the rest of my 2 year stay in NorCal. Be sure to visit Aviva. read more

So glad I found this gem. I made a last-minute appointment for cut and color, and needed both desperately. Jordan did a great job with balayage and toning down the brassiness, and Sarah was thoughtful, listened to what I wanted, and gave a great cut. Both were sweet and fun to hang out with. The salon has a pleasant, bustling atmosphere that is upscale without feeling overly hipster or snooty. I'll definitely be back! One snag at the end of my appointment is that I wasn't told in advance that the stylists could only take tips via cash or check; I didn't have either with me, so I'll have to return in order to tip them. My favorite hair salon. I'm VERY picky about where I take my curly hair. It's really easy to end up looking like a poodle, or like a bush that hasn't seen hedge clippers for awhile. I've been going to Diana at Keter for years now, and wouldn't dare go anywhere else. She's taken me from long hair to mid-length hair to short-ish hair, and I've always been thrilled with my cut. Diana really takes into account things like the shape of my face, lifestyle (I roll out of bed and out into the world so can't have high-maintenance hair) and takes all of my needs into account. And people literally chase me down on the street to find out where I got my hair cut. Great color, too. Friendly atmosphere and great staff--not snotty like some salons. I can say, with over a years worth of patronship, that Keter salon has been the one place that has consistently provided me with a quality haircut. Just today, I made an appointment with Sam during my lunch break at work. I went in, got the cut, and went back to work. I got compliments from everyone in the office; now when was the last time you got an overwhelming positive reaction about your haircut from literally everyone (even from strangers)? don't get confused, this is the same company as the Keter above Bette's, but a different branch, just a little south of the original. if you call, they'll explain it all. i actually like that this location is easier to park at (for now!) and less crowded. they could use a couch, like they have at the original shop, but other than that, great! specifically, TIFANI is SUCH the professional, so precise and thorough! it is said that, in order to give you a good cut, your cutter should take into account your lifestyle (how long you have to do your hair each day), your face shape, and the texture of your hair. Tifani did that and more!! she touched my hair, and examined the strands, and really got up in my 'do to get an accurate assessment of my locks. she also (very key) listened intently to what i wanted, what i was willing to do (and not do), how open i was to options, etc etc. this thorough consult pre-cut really put me at ease. after all, isn't it nerve-wracking enough to think of chopping your hair?? you need to have confidence in your hair person! then, the magic finger shampoo, (they are very good at that at Keter) and the cut. Tifani is very easy to talk to, and very open and accepting. no attitude or judgements. she was not pushy about product...she told me exactly what she was putting in my hair (which is only polite, yes?) and the purpose for each product. she showed me, afterwards, the products, and asked if i needed any of them. when i told her no, (i told her i have a TON of hair crap at home!) she said, oh good, use whatcha got! very refreshing to experience expertise without the big sales push! price was very reasonable (fifty for cut) but that's coz she's new to the shop. i'm sure once everyone finds out about her, and she's there for half an hour, she'll be just as expensive as the OG's. boohoo!! (Keter has their stylists bump up their prices after a time, and old customers are not grandfathered in and have to pay the higher price...at least that's how it was for my last girl) whatever the case, i'll see her as long as i can afford her!! all in all, a very positive experience and SO exciting that i finally found a great hair person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah!! as i always say, it was easier finding a husband, really! read more

I went to Keter Salon when traveling for work. I needed it cut and colored. Letty was available when I stopped by and she took such great care of me. She improved my cut by cutting my bangs differently than they were and she suggested to add in some highlights to help frame my face and explained they would help hide the grey peek-a-boos that seem to be popping up quite frequently now (they drive me crazy!). She started out by going over the plan for cutting my hair, providing recommendations, and letting me know what products she was going to use based on what type of haircut I wanted. While she styled my hair, she told me the steps she took as she did them and why she was doing them so that I could try to recreate the style on my own on a day-to-day basis. Rebecca is fantastic!! I've been getting my hair cut by Rebecca for many years and can't say enough good things about her. My hair is curly and has a mind of its own, but she always manages to cut it so that I look terrific. Recently I started getting highlights and lowlights; once again, Rebecca is a magician. Her color selection has been terrific. Plus she is very warm and fun to talk to. I also love Keter. It's a light, low key, and unpretentious --but first rate-- salon. Highly recommend Jordan for color and Sam and Anita for cuts. I've been getting my hair colored by Jordan for a few years and she's been great at working with me to get the color I want. She always consults with me about what I want first and is always real about what can be done and what may happen to my hair health. I've also had my hair cut by Anita and Sam and they're both wonderful about listening to what I want and making it work and giving me styling tips for my sometimes wavy, coarse hair. Everything is a little pricey, but my hair texture is hard to work with, so it's worth the money for me. read more

This place is adorable! The whole staff is so friendly and welcoming. Not to mention very well trained and talented to boot. I specifically have been to Tifani and can't wait to go back to see her!! She has done both cut and color for me and I've loved them every time! Tifani does a great job of listening to what I want and Mkaing sure I get exactly that. It's so frustrating when hairstylists don't listen to your vision and just do whatever they want to your hair--that has never been the case with Tifani. I grew up in a beauty salon, literally. I had my hair done by a Sassoon trained European platform artist for years. I have tried a multitude of salons in the Bay Area, big and small, this is the only place I am consistently satisfied with my hair. I leave looking gorgeous, turning heads walking down the street. I would have given 5 stars based on the haircut, but I heard the salon just had a mass exodus of stylists, including Matt Dixon, who rocks my socks off. The only other stylist who ever got my bangs right and made my thick, curly hair somewhat manageable is in Italy and charged me 135 Euros. Matt is much more conveniently located and affordable. I went to Kefer a couple of months ago to get my hair styled and the roots done. It was really expensive and I got a parking ticket BUT my stylist was excellent and I was super happy with the result. I just had it done again, this time with another stylist because mine was on vacation and this time still expensive for what was supposed to be just a trim of the existing cut and a root touch up. The color I'll have to say is excellent but the cut, well let's just say I'm in tears trying to make the cut work. My hair is short and the previous cut had not grown out of its style - all I needed was a little trim. But now there's a shelf at the nape of my head. My bob is undercut - shaved underneath - and the bob is supposed to cover the shaved hair (which is all all white, not the color of my top hair) which she didn't do and I had to go back the next day to get it cleaned up - and it's still not covered. The stylist who cleaned up the hairline said I would have to shave it myself for maintenance - which I understand because my prior cut covered that hairline. I'm updating this review today because I just washed my hair for the first time since the cut and I cannot get it to fall. The cut is supposed to have movement and it is just stuck to my head with a shelf at the nape. If I could get my money back I would. I don't know if I want to return and I'm super upset. That's all I have to say about this place. Also Yelp, you need to add at least another dollar sign -$145 for a root touch up and trim is a crime. read more

I typically do not write reviews, but I want to warn anyone who is not a regular client at this salon to go elsewhere if they are in town and looking for a place to have their hair done for a special event. I was in town for my son's wedding and booked an appointment for a wash and style. Not only was I disappointed with the result, the stylist didn't seem to care all that much. It's important that you know I am not exaggerating. When my daughter saw me afterward, she was afraid to say anything! She is used to seeing me look fabulous when I have my hair done. I tried to fix it myself, but the wedding photos are still hard for me to look at. I think every woman will understand what I mean. I am angry at myself for not booking an appointment at Aveda, which is my go-to where I live. I just figured a salon in Berkeley that charges $65 for a wash and style would be a safe bet.
