This is a review specific to an instructor at this location, Randall Ruback. We had a terrible experience with him. After 4 months of lessons I reached out to him to let him know of our timeline for ending lessons. We were stopping when my son started Jazz band at his middle school. The response I received had some information that was out of the blue - that my son was struggling with focus in lessons and playing over him and too loudly. I had never been told any of this feedback previously, so this was a surprise to me. I talked to my son about the feedback and his next lesson was good, however, Randy would not even come out of the room to see me. The next week we showed up for lessons and 10 minutes in I heard Randy yelling in the room, the door opened and Randy was kicking my son out of lessons and yelling at him about playing when he was talking and playing too loudly. He then yelled at him, that if he could listen they could finish the lesson. My son who was visible shaken went back in. I was frozen and didn't know what to do. The lesson finished, Randy came back out and I confronted him about his inappropriate reaction to the situation. I received an extremely defensive response about boundaries and after some back and forth was told if I was not okay with they way he spoke to my son, then he couldn't teach him anymore and we were done after next weeks lesson. We left the store at this point. I went home and sent him an email about the interaction and how it was inappropriate and that we would not be coming to the last lesson. I did not get any acknowledgement to how he was wrong to speak to a child in that way. I pointed out that if there was as big of a problem as he was claiming, he needed to talk to me in person after lessons about any issues rather than bottling his frustrations up and out-bursting like a toddler. He blamed the whole situation on my parenting abilities and told me what my child needed from a medical perspective. He is an emotionally insecure person who cannot control his temper or admit when he has done something inappropriate. We will never go back to him as an instructor and I suggest you avoid him at all costs. read more

This was a truly customer first experience. I took a 50+ year old guitar in to get new strings. Landon said he would be glad to do it. They charged me under $10 for the strings. I presumed there would be a charge for labor. Nope! Landon informed me that it took him longer than normal because the bridge was dusty and needed to be cleaned off. He did that also. When I offered him a tip, he refused it and then offered to carry my guitar to my car. Landon is making Kennely Keys proud! Thank you so much for an exceptional customer experience. read more

We had been going to Kennelly keys in Everett , Staff are always very friendly , great service . We come here for a trombone lesson with Randal Ruback .my daughter had been taking lessons with him since she's a sophomore , it had been almost 2 years since she started and she had already accomplished so many things . . She had no experience playing trombone , but after 2 months , she had learned well that she passed the audition to be in Jazz 1 at Glacier peak High school. Last February 2025, , 7 months since she started , she won the MPMEA solo Regionals and competed in states and got the highest score from all 3 judges . Mr. Ruback is very patient and thorough , he's very focused on creating a perfect sound . He's very kind and he really cares about his students , we had met several of his students and most of them won and competed in State , and some of them got full scholarship at the university they went to . We are very grateful to Mr. Ruback . He's an excellent teacher. We are very lucky to have him . We highly recommend him. read more

Purchased a Yamaha Acoustic Guitar from Kennelly Keys. This was the most EXCELLENT shopping experience. The initial interactions were done via the company website. I sent an inquiry over their site and within less than an hour, I had a response from Christian Smith. Christian Smith is the store manager of the Kennelly Keys at their Everett location. Talked through a few things I was looking for, he was quick to research and share his findings with me via email within the hour. I was invited over to check out the inventory and I was pleased beyond belief. I also had a trade in of equipment that was used as credit towards the purchase of my guitar. Christian worked out a more than fair offer for the gear I had and it was a quick wrap up. Pros: Excellent service and staff. Very responsive and cares about the quality of service and products being sold. Non-aggressive sale environment, they will leave you to play and test the instrument at your leisure. Good price points on the inventory on hand. All services for repairs, and lessons are available. Cons: Store is tucked away and may be difficult for some to find if it's your first time going there. Shop may seem empty and run down, but a bit more upkeep with the grounds would be able to resolve this concern. None of these are truly Cons. ++This is not a con but I haven't used their repair service and if I have to use their service, I will update my review. Overall. Highly recommend Kennelly Keys to anyone looking to purchase an instrument. The staff is truly a class act and will treat you right. read more

For almost a month now the manager is either out sick or has a day off when I try to trade-in used gear and no other employees are authorized for this service. This is exclusive to Kennelly Keys and I have not had this issue at American Music. GuitarCenter, Tommy's, Mike's, and every other local music store has no issue helping you right away. It is only Kennelly Keys that refuses to help you. It needs to be advertised that they are available by appointment only and that this is not a regular service they provide. read more

Although these guys have a huge guitar section, I've only ever been in for school band instrument rental and repair. They do a lot of both and are easy to work with. I have had 2 above & beyond customer service experiences- 1) at the start of a rental, the horn I ordered wasn't available because it was the beginning of the school year. The manager substituted the next grade up rather than make me wait a week, no hassles. 2) horn needed repair 3 days before a concert with a normal 1 week turn-around. I wish I could give a higher rating to Kennelly Keys, but I cannot. The employees are friendly, but the workmanship in repairs is only of decent to low quality. I have had two guitars repaired through Kennelly Keys: 1970's Guild D50NT for a broken neck and setup ($650+) 1999 PRS McCarty for two new frets, filing, and setup. ($325.00) From what I know, things like this are sent to American Music for repair. For my Guild, there was still quite a bit of fret buzz and it didn't seem to be setup properly after fixing the neck. My PRS now has indentations around the fretboard where they placed the new frets. I also asked for a setup on my PRS. I wanted to play with 11's and there was fret buzz all over. Additionally, both guitars could not be found at Kennelly Keys or American music and were "lost" for a couple of days... I cannot recommend this place for the service that they provided on my guitars. read more

Took my Daughter in to buy a ukulele tonight and got horrible customer service. Seem like the salesman where more concern about getting out at 7 than helping us. The Salesman sat and played a guitar for 10 minutes while we walked around the display. Never looked up or ask us if we needed help. Finally ask him if he knew anything about ukulele and he said in a sarcastic tone "what do you want to know". Ask where the music books are at and he made zero effort to show us or recommend one. All he said "around the corner". I rent viola and a cello from Kennelly and bought snare drum, trumpet, flute in the past and they didn't make feel like a value customer. I did buy ukulele tonight because my 14 year old was so excited but I doubt I'll go back for anything else. read more

I first stopped by a month ago to schedule guitar lessons for my wife. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Since then, I have picked up a couple of items here and there from them. Each time, they were very friendly and listened to the questions I had. My wife has been enjoying her lessons there too. The instructors adjust the lessons to accommodate the student's musical interests, and my wife really likes that. If you are looking for a friendly place to start your music journey, this is a great place to start. read more

Only been playing the guitar for less than two years so I am not really up on all the serious guitar 'lingo'. Went here and was treated well, even though the salesman clearly was a serious player. He was patient with me and, though I only bought guitar picks, treated me like a high-roller. I purchased a used Roland Kit from Kennelly Keys Music in Everett on 12/23 for our daughters Christmas present. I tried out multiple kits with assistance from the sales representative ultimately landing on the used kit. We have been looking at electronic drum kits for a while knowing a Roland can expand as she progresses. They wouldn't budge on the price but did gives us a 10% discount on the bass pedal and throne. Come Christmas day we play the kit and the snare isn't picking up hits consistently. Something I didn't notice when I tried out the kit in the store. Keep in mind I'm not a drummer and didn't think of looking over the kit in that much detail. You don't know what you don't know. This is why I relied on the sales rep. Called up Kennelly Keys Music and get nothing but the run around, initial sales rep says he will talk with his manager and call me back. Roughly 10 minutes later I get a call back from the same sales representative telling me I have to bring the head in the week following to talk with their drumming expert Josh. I take the drum head in and he didn't even test it, telling me he already new it was broke. So they sold me a used kit knowing that it was broke. Than sends me out the door w/out testing the head stating he will talk with the manager again to see what can be done. 2 - 3 days later I get a call from the drum expert giving me three options 1) get a complete refund 2) Return the kit and spend more money to get a lower edition Roland kit that is new 3) Buy a new head from them for retail cost. I chose option 4) buy a new head from eBay for $90. Through this entire process I didn't receive a single call from the store manager. I try not to bash on companies, people etc. but want to make sure people understand what they are getting into when purchasing used equipment from Kennelly Keys Music in Everett. The sales representatives are generalist so make sure you ask if they specialize in a specific instrument and don't expect them to go above and beyond to resolve an issue. You will most likely be on your own to resolve the issue. read more

She was more than supportive and understanding of the clueless parents of a kid who know he needed something better than what he has, but not sure what tgat actually meant. The new store is nice, the staff is polite. They carry a reasonable amount of guitars although most of them seem to be cheap Squires. They have very little in the way of parts and accessories, Even their string selection is very limited. About a year and a half ago I was interested in a Breedlove acoustic guitar and had some questions that the staff was unable to answer. I was told that the manager would call me. More recently I needed a part (a fairly common item) for my guitar and was told they would order it and within 3 business days they would call me. I never heard back either time and ended up spending my $$ at a national competitor. If you can go in and they have what you want then they're okay. But if not, don't waste your time. As for me, any business that tells me specifically that they are going to do something and then doesn't will not get my continued business. I do not plan on returning. read more

I have been a patron of Kennelly Keys since we first moved up to Snohomish county in 2008. I much prefer the personal feel of Kennelly Keys over the box store feel of the other guy. Not to mention they're more about the music and the tools than about how you look while you do it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and willing to help. I have personally purchased two guitars and a PA from them and I can't be happier with the choices I've made. The one complaint that I have has to do with the free setup that comes with the purchase of a new guitar. The guys send the guitar off to the Lynnwood location for the setup, but the guy that does them over there is less than detail oriented. The Epiphone Les Paul I purchased was not set up very well when I got it back from them and the Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin had to be sent to them twice to just get it to behave properly. The Everett location has qualified and competent guitar/instrument techs on staff, I don't understand why the new instruments need to be sent off site for the initial setup. All in all, they are a great group of people in a nice location. If they'd just do the Everett setups in Everett... read more

I will never spend money with this company again. Servicing rentals takes 3-5 days & they don't offer loaners during this time. Their prices are high enough that they should make sure your child isn't left without an instrument for several days. If I could give zero stars, I would. read more
