This is a difficult review. Many months ago I hired Kelley's Stump Removal to trim trees/bushes, remove bushes in the front and back yard, and pull root balls (1 - 2 ft radius) from a Cypress hedge and other shrubs. What should have been a one-day job dragged into three separate visits, where I had to take time off of work and not get paid, and I ended up doing quality control myself.
Day one, the crew of two showed up on time and did a nice job trimming my birch tree. But they cleared the inside part of my front yard smoothed the dirt, and left by 2:30 -- nowhere near finished, despite being told it would be done that day with a full crew. Kelley later blamed light rain for the delay, which contradicted what Carlos (his crew lead) had told me, and didn't match the fact that my neighbors' crew worked all day in the same drizzle.
They came back the following Tuesday. I found stumps still sitting just 6 inches under the soil -- not the 18-24 inches we'd agreed on -- and sent photos with a measuring tape to prove it. Kelley apologized and promised to fix it.
When they returned, Carlos cut through a water pipe, right next to the water main, which should've been obvious that they needed to be careful. Kelley came to repair it. When I asked them not to backfill that hole until I could confirm it wasn't leaking, Kelley got visibly angry and accused me of not trusting him -- in front of his own crew, whom he also berated. It seemed logical to wait & not cause further damage trying to locate it if it still needed repair. They damaged a second water line and simply declared it "not a working line" without ever turning the water on to check. Despite my asking them to wait, three holes were backfilled before I could inspect them.
I ended up shoveling out 12 stumps along the front sidewalk myself -- and got a blister doing it. Kelley eventually came back with a pickax to finish that section, but only after arguing that those stumps were from junipers, not the plants originally removed, as if that changed what we'd agreed to....to remove everything. A large rosemary bush and stumps along the fence line were still left behind even after they called the job "done." There was a lot of haggling by Kelley about the difference between roots and a root ball and what was left behind throughout the process.
The job did eventually get finished, but only because I stayed on top of every detail, checked their work repeatedly, and pushed back when they cut corners. Kelley was unprofessional and thin-skinned about being held to the agreement, Carlos avoided accountability at every turn, and the crew was treated poorly by their own boss. A landscaper working next door told me Kelley's crew has a bad reputation in the area -- I believe it. On top of everything, they were overpriced for the level of service delivered.
Kelley made a point of his faith, but you wouldn't know it from how this job was handled.
I would not recommend this company. read more
