I've always enjoyed a good roast beef sandwich from Kelly's, so yesterday when I was in Peabody I decided to visit. I had a gluten free friend with me, and kellys now offers this option. Well, we were both very disappointed. My FF's and OR's arrived cold. Sandwich was mediocre. The quality of meat didn't look like what I remember tasting or seeing. My friends steak and cheese look like it had been cooked hours earlier, and heated up in a microwave. Wait staff seemed bored, no on enjoying being there! Only upsides, the root beer was still great and I was being entertain by obnoxious children and a clueless mother. I will not return to the Peabody location, but will try another location, hoping this was a fluke! read more

Flew in from Phoenix needed my Kelly fix. Got the clams and scallop platter and cup of chowder and a drink. Everything was excellent their Tatar sauce was excellent the food was great. The service was good and quick not a long wait. Only issue is the price $36 dollars seems like a lot for what I ordered. Thankfully it was delicious. But pricey. Also I noticed their dessert menu only listed a frappe. Surprised no other options available. read more

I'd not been to Kelly's before, although I'd heard of the one in Revere. Didn't know this was a chain, but on the way back from a day trip to the Maine coast, my husband and I saw Kelly's from the road and had to stop by the drive thru. We ordered a large roast beef sandwich with BBQ sauce to share. The sandwich was excellent; the beef was juicy and piled high, and the BBQ sauce was a bit spicy and vinegar-y... there wasn't quite enough sauce actually. I would definitely go back and order the sandwich again, although I'd request extra BBQ sauce. read more

This place is going down hill, which is sad. It use to be such a good place. The staff is unfriendly and don't appear to be trained well. Every time you go there the prices increase and the food quality decreases. My cheese sticks tasted like fish and my cheeseburger was paper thin. I was told that sometimes the cooks use the wrong frying machine. Don't let them fool you., the kids meals and the plates are the same serving size. The drive thru is terrible. Ordered the lobster roll. Their sign says the lobster roll contains the meat of two one pound lobsters. They must have discovered tailless lobsters. While there was plenty of meat, it was all knuckle and claw meat. It was very wet and I suspect that it was previously frozen; it definitely was not fresh. This review is solely for the lobster rolls. I've had the roast beef in the past and it is good. However, make sure you order it rare or there is a chance it will be like leather I had to send it back last time I ordered it. read more

Today was a bad day for kellys for us. Usually I love kellys but today that changed not only did I have cold food but when I was asking for a manager to fix it I get a very rude eye roll and made to feel like I was more of a pain. This is the first time I had ever asked to speak to someone I don't usually have anything bad to say about them and usually I love kellys and wish to keep coming back. Not only that but after this I had over heard someone say "I'm not dealing with this today.' I left mad before anyone had even gotten to me after I hear that. I felt like i was a burden. Got the fisherman a platter most of it was cold the shrimp the clams the scallops and the fish all tasted frozen. Kelly's was know for its fresh seafood. Best lobster roll in New England, huge portion, perfectly toasted bun, loads and loads of lobster with only a little bit of mayo and celery - just what it should be. A little bit pricey, but _two_ people can share one and have lunch. Don't order the large onion rings unless you want a huge plate of them. Out of the 6 Kelly's Roast Beef that were up because now there's 5, i love this one at Saugus, i love the chicken fingers and cheese fries, they make it perfect, i had them at all 6 and they usually dump too much cheese on the fries where you look like your swimming in cheese looking for a fry, or they put too much black pepper and salt on the fries, but at Saugus location its perfect, if you guys ever been to the Allston location before it closed down that was a good one as well but the parking was terrible, so if you guys want a really good Kelly's Roast beef location i advise this one at Saugus because they good, have a drive thru, and a dining area, the one in revere is good as well but best for summer time read more

I thought this place was going to be really good, based on reviews had read, and I am not to picky but this place was not anything great to me. Their food is expensive compared to other roast beef places around, so I would expect more more but did not get much at all.. I ordered a roast beef with onion rings. I don't know if it was just an off day for the rings but they were horrible ! No taste what so ever and very dry. The roast beef was good but nothing phenomenal especially for $7, I had a great super roast beef at athas in lynn for $5.30 and stacked sky high. Ahhhhhhhhh, Kelly's. It's like breaking off an old stale relationship. The heart may be in the right place but there's no wind in the sails anymore. You keep going back thinking you're going to reignite the old flame but it flickers. The time frame between visits grows, until you find yourself just not coming around anymore. And then......you finally realize..........it's over. The staff is usually very friendly and I think they try hard but this place just doesn't have it anymore when it comes to serving quality food. Been this way for years now. When I used to go, it was mostly late night so maybe that has something to do with it ? However, they are well known for being a late night spot so that shouldn't be an excuse. *The roast beef is well done and dried out. The rolls are often stale. *Used to be you'd get one rubbery clam in an entire order..........now it's sometimes half the plate. *The onion rings are now like something from the Petrified Forest. You bite into the crunch and then you get a mouthful of sawdust. Last couple of times I ate there I got the fish & chips. On one occasion, one of the filets was still frozen on the inside. I ate the small, thinner piece and then brought the rest back to the counter. I must say, the manager was great. He came over and asked me why I didn't return it immediately so they could make me a new meal I told him I was so hungry, I ate the small piece along with the fries and was not going to ask for anything but just wanted to let him see the frozen fish that was on my plate. He offered to make me a new meal and I told him I appreciated it but I didn't want more fish because I've been disappointed with it the last few times I've ordered it. He then said "how about I make you a roast beef sandwich" ? I said "Yes, that sounds good. I'll take a small roast beef with sauce". He said "I'll make you a large". Gotta give the kid some props here because you don't see that very often these days unless you're at the Capital Grille or some place of that ilk. I really really want to like Kelly's again. As I'm from out of town, this is my first time here. The roast beef was well prepared and sliced just right for my liking. There's a good choice of toppings for your sandwich. A slightly warmer grilled bun would have enhanced the taste for me, but good overall. For a side I ordered the mac & cheese. At almost $3 for a small cup of kraft mac n cheese, it was a pretty big letdown. I would've preferred something more panera style. I'll come back and give some salad or seafood a shot next time. The cafeteria like atmosphere is pleasant, and the place is very clean. This makes the slightly higher prices remotely justifiable for me. read more

The roast beef is good but the fries are freezer brand. For a $10 meal I would hope the fries might be alright but I was wrong. My biggest issue would be with the service. The cashier was a young man very likely in his late teens/early 20s and should probably be in back sweeping instead of working with humans. Communication was less than exciting and when in line, instead of saying "next" or "may I help you" I get an awkward stare. In Saugus I guess this means you're next in line. So I get the pleasure of watching this young fellow try to pretend like he cares about anything related to Kelly's Roast Beef. He speaks away from me and mumbles to boot so I cannot make out a word he says. Eventually coming to a conclusion I ask for my order to go and receive no receipt. I wait a fairly short amount of time and a very nice gentleman is walking around the dining area with my order calling my name. Unfortunately it appears the unreliable and careless cashier did not tell anyone it was a to go order and thankfully the nice man now dealing with my food notified the cashier to "at least cross out the number" and the cashier didn't even seem to listen. The damage was done, everything was already cold and I've only got the cashier to blame. Please relocate this guy to the parking lot picking up trash. Purchased a large onion ring this afternoon. I am very sorry to say very poor food and prep. Oil was old and tasted so. The onion rings were over cooked and burnt and tasteless. I don't eat onion rings often any more. So this was a treat. More like a trick. So disappointing to see Kellys drop in the quaility standards. Its been years since I have been to Kelly's and tonight I realized why I have stayed away. Years ago, they were consistent but then fell short each time I visited and tonight was disappointing. In the last couple of years I've gotten screwed each time at the take out window, thinking I would give them another chance. No more. It's all about the buck now. I can see raising the price and keeping the quality the same; but they should be ashamed of themselves for serving overpriced crap along with small portions. Especially this Saugus location. All punky kids working here standing around with thumbs up their butts and management could care less. Scallops are small and tasteless (frozen) Haddock tastes like carp or very low quality scrod, roast beef is dry and overcooked, rolls taste stale, onion rings and fries are soggy. For a place that's called "Kelly's Roast Beef" (which I guess I can understand since their roast beef is indeed pretty awesome), they surprisingly have some tasty and satisfying seafood. I'd go even as far as to say that their lobster roll is the best I've had in the Boston area thus far; the bread is pretty much just sliced white bread toasted in butter, but it tastes absolutely amazing when coupled with the enormous amounts of lobster bursting out of it (and unlike other places, the lobster isn't mixed with obnoxious amounts of mayonnaise and celery). Another satisfying dish is their clam plate -- no, these fried clams are not the wimpy clam strips you'd find at most other places, but rather, the hearty clam bellies (I find that the horseradish sauce that you can ask for on the side goes quite well with the clams and almost anything else there, but I like horseradish, so maybe I just have a weird bias). The clam chowder is chock full (and when I say that, I mean CHOCK FULL) of clams, but it is also very liquid-y (but the insane amount of clams in it somewhat makes up for that shortcoming). And their fries, loaded, are ridiculously addicting. read more

Went to this location recently for a small roast beef sandwich with mayonnaise and cheese. It was late, about 10:30 at night so I contemplated going through the drivethru out of laziness but decided to go inside and order instead as I was in a rush to get home to my kids and figured it would be quicker. When I got inside there were two couples sitting down eating in the entire place. I was the only person in line to order, so I quickly placed my order and then began waiting for it. 15 minutes went by while workers were aimlessly walking around behind the counter chatting and I finally asked for my money back from the manager due to the wait. With no apology whatsoever, the manager came over and handed me back my money. I don't mind waiting but 15 minutes for one sandwich when the roast beef is already made and there is next to no one in the building??! The cherry on top was the rude manager who never offered an apology or said he would have it made right away. This place has gone downhill....not worth the drive or the wait. I'll be sure to stick to Billy's roast beef from now on. read more

My wife and I had lunch at the Saugus Kelly's we heard it was very good and since it offered Gluten Free rolls we decided to give it a try. What a mistake it was terrible. The Roast Beef was raw, I don't mean rare but RAW and had absolutely NO flavor. I don't think they ever herd of seasoning. Wife got the Clam Chowder and it was watery and had very limited flavor. One would think Clam Chowder right outside of Boston would be thick creamy and have a clam flavor like New England Clam chowder is suppose to be. It wasn't was more like a some what clam flavored soup broth than a chowder. In fact the local grocery store in my home town in Western Mass (an hour and half from ocean) is thick creamy and has a rich Clam flavor. I definitely would not recommend this so called restaurant to any one more of a garbage site. Three words to describe Kelly's Roast Beef. NASTY NASTY NASTY!!! I lived in revere for 20 years I always use to go to Kelly's Roast Beef for scallops they where the best no matter what price it use to be but I had twice bad experience with customer service they don't care about guest first i was charged for drink I did not receive I as to credit the money back to the account the manager denied to reimburse the money say he have to go through lot of paper work I was very disappointed with ths t answer me working in restaurant industry know how to treat a guest he did send me a 5$ gift card which I am sure I will never going to use it. The second time I place the phone order I place 2scallops plate and shrimp plate for my family dinner it cost me 59$ and some change I ask for some extra tatar sauce the guy who took my order sad I have to charge u for it I just spent 59$ throwing few extra Tatar sauce would not have hurt them I said ok no problem charge me. But the way you speak to guest some one need to teach to Kelly's guy's. I won't be placing my order with them any more............... rude very rude....... read more
