My A/C went out over the Memorial Day weekend. I called Kellam Mechanical, and the very nice answering service lady took my information. Shortly afterward, a tech called. His phone wasn't very good, so I couldn't understand him and had to ask him to repeat himself several times. His annoyance was very noticeable. I asked how much it would be to come look at my A/C. He said the service call is $120, plus overtime, and then because it's a holiday, and ... I have no idea what he said after that. He was annoyed, I was clearly bothering him, and I wasn't about to pay all of that money, even on a holiday JUST for a service call. I thanked him and ended the call. I did eventually find another company whose tech came immediately and was happy to help me. I now have a maintenance agreement with that company. The following business day, I received a call from Kellam Mechanical saying they saw I had called over the weekend and offered to send someone out to look at the unit. So, the tech never even closed out the call. Friends recommended Kellam Mechanical to me. I'm very disappointed. read more

Kellam Mechanical is without doubt the the best in the area. They are on time, technically proficient, and very customer friendly. They have provided me both regular maintenance, repairs, and upgrades and I have been very pleased. Alan and Chris are outstanding! read more

Jerry Wagner with Kellam inspected my AC unit this morning and installed a digital thermostat. He was on time and worked efficiently and politely put on "booties" when he entered my home. Everything is working great and I finally feel like I have a reliable heating/ac service company. They also installed a new hot water heater for me in October and at that tine I purchased a service agreement, which has been a terrific deal. Looking forward to a long term relationship with Kellam Mechanical! read more

I would give this company 0 stars if I could. One day before our home inspection in preparation for selling our house, our old water heater began leaking. My wife called Kellam (on a Thursday, not a holiday or weekend) and asked for a quote for replacing the 50 gallon direct vent water heater. They gave her a quote of $2800 to replace the old one with a comparable system. We agreed to that price. However, after arriving at the house they said we needed a special kind of water heater and the price would now be $6200. With just hours left in the work day, the home inspection coming the next day, and no time to ask another company for a quote, she agreed to it. She asked them for an itemized invoice to see the costs of parts and labor and the installation tech said a manager would provide it to us. They are now saying the managers are out of the office and they have a "one price" billing system that doesn't tell you what you're paying for. The bottom line is this company is dishonest and seems to think they can make money by taking advantage of people who don't have a lot of time to get multiple quotes. We didn't get any special product or service on this water heater to justify the 220% markup. They just knew we were stuck and took us the the cleaners. read more

Morgan, once again saved the day! Our AC was not working yesterday evening and was going on and off periodically. Morgan called at 6:00PM and said he was on the way! Not only is he personable and easy to understand, he shows you what is wrong and what to look for. He also is great with kids! My son adores him, follows him around the house and will randomly request that we call Morgan at Tell 'em Kellam at least once a week. He was so excited last night while Morgan was there and he said, "I sure wish I had your energy, Mason." So, I asked Mason where he gets it from, this child says "Morgan gives it to me!" From the mouths of babes! read more

We have been a Kellam Mechanical customer for the past 10 years and are always pleased with their service. They show up on time and always communicate billing and maintenance fees clearly. My HVAC recently went out. I called this company and they responded out quick. The job was completed professionally without any up-sales. This is the second time I have used this company and would recommend them to others. read more

If Kellam was in the business of incompetence, they would have 6 1/2 stars. Their techs seem incompetent, their administrators seem incompetent, and the communication between the two needs a better word than incompetent (I'm open for suggestions). After seeing what they put our landlords through, we will happily avoid them with our new home. read more

I've been very impressed with Kellam Mechanical for three separate requests in the last year - one for a defective A/C circuit board, and recently for both an air duct cleaning and A/C tuneup. Richard diagnosed the bad board only after a multitude of tests. Jamie and Shawn were at my home for nearly seven hours with the air duct cleaning and A/C tuneup. They removed about 16 registers in my house and methodically cleaned the ducts, to include before/after pictures. On several of them, they repeated the process 2 and sometimes 3 times. They also chemically cleaned the registers themselves and made them look brand new. With the A/C tuneup, even though the A/C unit is not very old, Shawn diagnosed that the A/C capacitor had very low levels, which could cause the motor to blow. He quickly replaced it, and the A/C is running great. Highly recommend to use Kellam Mechanical for your HVAC and air duct services, you won't regret it. read more

I just called asking for someone to come out and check my heating problem and before anyone asked me about my issue, they needed me to sign a maintenance agreement or my charges were going to be much higher. Um.... I don't even know who you are as a company and you won't even come out to my house to meet me first? Unbelievable. Where I'm from, a first visit should always be free and then we go from there. I miss where I'm from. read more

We have been using Kellam Mechanical for a few years now. They replaced our old broken down HVAC a couple of years ago. We have them come out twice a year for check-ups and cleanings, they always set up a time window for the appointment and call when they are on the way and they have always been right on time. The techs are really good, neat, clean, professional and knowledgeable. The office staff is really good too, friendly and very responsive to customer needs, like following up with phone calls and giving the impression that your business and satisfaction is of utmost importance to them. I had my HVAC repaired this past winter after being without the AC for two summers. Cost 1800+. Turned the AC on but the house did not cool down. I take it the putting in Freon was not included in the repair. My warranty is up next year; I will be moving on to another company. Their website is no user friendly. read more

I have been through the horrors of using a Home Warranty service, and the incompetent service people that they send out to put bandaids on everything - never really fixing anything to last. After a few years of this, someone recommended Kellam to me. They said that Kellam may be a bit more pricey . . . but it is worth it. And they were RIGHT. (But, in the end, is it really more expensive to pay someone ONCE and get it done right? Or pay 5 different companies less, and never get it fixed?) I have learned that the 'ONCE' method wins out every time. We own a 100-year old home in Ghent, with all the repairs that go along with owning an 'antique' - but Kellam has a staff of mechanics that know how to repair machinery (furnaces/boilers/complicated systems) - and keep it running. And when it finally came time to replace some units - they sent John G, who oversaw the entire project . . . making it virtually effortless on my part. They procured permits, dealt with city and notified neighbors about street closings, so that a crane could be brought in, as necessary, to remove rooftop units and replace them in a jiffy. These things are never 'fun' . . . but John went to extra lengths to make the project a pleasant one. His staff of mechanics, including the 'ever-talented boiler go-to-guy', DJ - got the job done swiftly, expertly, and NEATLY! I was truly amazed . . . and so thankful! I sure wish that more businesses took pride in their work, the way Kellam does. Thank You. For once, we have AC that we can FINALLY count on - with a long hot summer ahead! read more

We had a water pressure issue affecting our appliances particularly the dishwasher. We had our water tested and were told it was due to water hardness. We requested a second opinion from Kellam Mechanical and asked about water softener systems. We were told on the phone they sold the systems and would send a "technician" out to diagnose our problem and test the water to give a second opinion. We were told they would be here between 1 and 5 pm. Naturally, they arrived at 5:00 after waiting all day. The 'technician' literally looked at not one pipe. Told us it's likely a hardness problem, had to go call his manager to get us prices on a whole house system and when he came back in told us they in fact don't sell them and advised us to Google who does. He never looked at the water line to the dishwasher or any other appliance or plumbing line. After 20 minutes of small talk he asked for $59.00 for a dispatch fee. I have never been so disappointed in a company. Their website promises service. We received anything but service. As of now, the only thing we have accomplished by calling this company is wasting $60; practicing writing a yelp review, wasting an entire 5 hours and we are back to square one! read more

Had Joe B. out yesterday for a checkup for my mini splits that were install this past May and he was great! Didn't even know my system did heat! Very valuable news since our oil furnace had been red flagged and have been without heat, while waiting for a new furnace, for several days! He was very helpful and personable. Also made a recommendation for a surge protector for our system but was not pushy at all. A+ service from him! On a different note when my system was installed in May no one mentioned they did heat. Also the wall surrounding my electrical box was damages during install and I reported the problem, to Rusty, but nothing was ever done about it. I got distracted after 6 emails, I had a newborn baby to take care of, and just never remembered to get back in touch. read more

I've used Kellam Mechanical for almost 2 years. Signed up for the contract service. Due to two negative experiences with them I have decided to end my service with them and go with another company. First issue happened after the summer service visit. 1 day after the service visit my AC overflowed and leaked through the ceiling. The service technician forgot to blow out the drain line. Kellam Mechanical sent out the service manager and 2 other technicians to make it right. Second issue just happened during my winter service call. The Technician informed me I needed 2 new thermostats at a cost of $600 each for a whopping total of $1200! I looked online and found the same thermostats for $140 each. Needless to say I politely declined and placed an order on Amazon and received the new thermostats in 2 days. I also looked at previous invoices and noticed that all of the parts they have sold me in the past had a huge mark-up. I understand businesses make money off parts, but the mark-up Kellam Mechanical is charging is absurd. Additionally, their contract service is twice as expensive as other companies. I don't like feeling that I'm being taken advantage of so I have cancelled my service with them. read more

These folks are amazing. I have a house and a condo. You have to get the maintenance contract. I call anytime on any day and they respond. Kellam Mechanical is by far one of the best companies we've had the pleasure to work with. My parents were having problems with their relatively new AC unit and more than one company was unable to fix it. Several friends recommended Kellam Mechanical and I can honestly say, they are the BEST group of people we've ever worked with. Their technicians were very knowledgable, able to not only diagnose the problem that multiple other groups were unable to fix but also explain how to maintain the system. John and Adam spent almost 2 hours fixing the problem and because the system was under warranty, they didn't charge my parents! That meant more to me than I can say. Knowing that my parents home is cool and they have a company they can trust is priceless. Honesty and excellence in service and technical skill are what the gentlemen at Kellam Mechanical built their company on. They are our go to company for as long as we live in Hampton Roads. read more

Ask for Chris Y as the best HVac guy I had compared to other comrades who served my home recently. My Nest thermostat was saying that no Hvac is connected and Chris found out that the drainage line was clogged up It was so bad that he had to return and fix it 3x in one day Nevertheless, he had that friendly and patient smile to fix it until it's done He even mentioned that I can call him anytime even at night if I still had the same problem.Fortunately not. Additionally, there were other problems that came up but Chris fixed them and went beyond just to ensure that my Hvac system works well. He is very knowledgeable, professional, friendly, funny, dedicated, reliable and most of all punctual in every appointments. I highly recommend him as ur Hvac guy at Kellam!! I've initially had another technician who came out to check my hvac but I only felt that he wanted to rip me off with his stupid suggestions just to make a profit, instead of listening to what I have to say with my hvac problem. Chris Y, on the other hand, took the initiative and made extra effort to find out what was really wrong w my system and resolved it. I'm very delighted about the results and again make sure you mention his name at Kellam cuz he will be there for you undoubtedly! And you will be posting another good review about him just like me.Go Chris! read more

Get 2nd opinions before you trust what they tell you. During a routine maintenance on my HVAC system that they installed, the tech said he needed to bring in a senior tech to double check some numbers that were high. The senior tech comes out and tells me that I need to replace a particular part on my outside unit. The part is supposedly under warranty but the labor would cost me $1400. The unit is only 3 years old, and the way he said it, made me not trust him. So I said I would wait on it. I got 2 other opinions, both of which told me that my unit doesn't even have this part in the first place. I went to Kellam and told them about it. They checked and no my unit doesn't have it. In fact, nothing is wrong with unit what so ever. Runs great. I canceled my service with them. read more

I called Kellam to service our new Virginia Beach home as I thought they were an honest company. My original HVAC tech was very nice and professional. He was so friendly he tricked me into the one year service plan on my two properties at the one address. He also told me he needed to order my replacement filters. He did not tell me they were 30 day filters and he was ordering 5 cases...5 cases...which he charged to my visa without my approval.....He serviced my A/C.last August which was good. Since the property is only 3 years old, everything is practically new so little was needed. The "Office" scheduled my "Winter" inspection. I was unable to be there due to a family emergency but gave the same tech access to my home. I told him where the keys were for the other unit. He decided, for whatever reason, that he would come back for the 2nd unit on another day...I paid another bill I was sent. When it fit "his" schedule to come back I was at the hospital with my mother (chemo) and offered for him to enter once again without me there. The office decided I stood him up and though they kept my 940.00 paid for one year...they never serviced my home as contracted because I was at the hospital with my dying mother. When I called and asked to speak to the owner...I was told he would call me...but his very rude "wife" never followed through. What protects the consumer? They know this is a vacation home. Why are they making it so difficult? I am not impressed. They seem very crooked. It is sad. My hope is someone other than the very unfeeling wife who answers the phone will read this review and make sure that customers are not taken advantage of in the future....you would think a customer with two homes which means two hvac, two generators, two hot water heaters, etc....would be a client they would seek...not steal from read more

I wouldn't even give them a single star, but you have to give something to even pen your grievances. These frauds quoted a time that they could arrive that worked with the time I needed. The technician called to inform me that it would be hours later before they would arrive. I informed them that this change would not work for my tenant. As soon as he realized I was a Landlord, he made it a point to get there around the time that I needed. He contacted me to let me know that there were a bullet point of fees that I would need to be aware of addressing. The issue I was having was the A/C wasn't blowing cold air. He recommended that I search for a leak to find the problem, because that was most likely the problem. I agreed to look for the leak, because that sounded like a logical solution. The technician called me back and told me that I would require a new coil, which would cost $4,000 and take three days before they could install it. I told him to go ahead and leave. He sent me this assessment: "upon arriving filter completely matted over. Took out filter and Checked pressures. Found system low on R22 refrigerant. Both indoor and outdoor coils need to be clean. Got approval to perform leak search. Found leak in outdoor coil at U-bend on left side. Outdoor unit was manufactured 1998. Need to replace coils and clean indoor coil before we are able to charge system with refrigerant. Called customer and informed them of price for repair. Customer said no and does not want to go any further with us. I asked customer if they would like me to send another technician out for a 2nd opinion and customer declined." I then had a family friend come to the house. He contacted me after assessing the situation to tell me that there was NO LEAK. Then, he cleaned a line out and it began blowing cold air. It has been working perfectly ever since. What our friend did was so insignificant that he didn't even charge me for what he did. So it cost me $267.00 - $89.00 for Kellam Mechanical to make a drive to my house and another $178.00 to flat our lie to me. They almost fleeced me for FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS on the same LIE. Freaking criminal robbery. DON'T EVER USE THEM...EVER. read more
