We were on vacation and swung by the Milwaukee Public Market. I'd read about St. Paul's Fish Co…read more and we were lucky to get a table for two around 5:45pm on a Tuesday without a wait. We both enjoyed a walleye fish with rice, veg, pineapple salsa and a beurre blanc sauce. Our waitress (in the Bass Pro Shop hat) was super bubbly and friendly, which added to the experience. We honestly enjoyed the meal and experience more than our anniversary dinner at a swanky 'harbor' restaurant that same week! Plus, you can't beat the price. Helpful?

The wait for a table was impossible and actually quite stressful and uncomfortable, so we settled on ordering our food to-go to sit somewhere in the main communal food hall seating. The line to the register was so long I actually was able to decide on my order pretty quickly - the fried oyster po'boy was meaty and crispy, not too overly breaded. The lobster roll meal came with fries and cole slaw for $20, which I found to be super affordable (this price is probably outdated now). A little bit too much filler but understandable and I was ok with it for the price. However, my favorite bite was the New England Clam Chowder, perfect for the rainy fall day. If I'm ever back in Milwaukee, I'd definitely try to dine in next time, but maybe not on a weekend afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Seems like a quintessential Wisconsin place to be, a cheese bar paired with your favorite wine or…read morecocktail. This place is pretty neat! It'll turn you into a cheese connoisseur if you're not already one. I fell in love with Gouda cheese as soon as I took a bite. We tried a classic cheese flight board and red wine only flight to pair with the different types of cheese. They made it into a gluten free spread so we had four types of cheese in lieu of the seasoned dried meat and gluten free crackers. The place is inviting, has nice decorations, great for going on a date or a casual catch up with your bestie. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. They knew so much about wine and cheese, I would want a whole Documentary on cheese. You can also purchase cheese and other goodies to go! Come on Thursdays, they have a discount on cheese boards!

The space is cozy and dim and well decorated. The staff are always kind. some are more helpful or informative than others. You can pair the cheeses with every drink on the menu or try pre-paired boards. You can also buy cheeses from the dairy and others, as well as assorted related products at a small retail section or cut fresh from the cheese case. Parking is on the street and can be a pain in this saturated area. The reason for the drop in stars? Prior visits got you more wines and more food to pair it with. This visit had prices steady but fewer wines, less cheese and $1 upcharge for some wafer crackers. I know the economy is not great right now, but this now seems like an expensive place to bring friends, not a reasonable day outing.

I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I…read morewalked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon.
