I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I walked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon. read more

I love this place and I wondered why I have never left a review or pictures, honestly it's a weekend chore so I'm not always thinking the Yelp thing and I don't check in or review everything I do. I wanted some fresh citrus for my work lunches so I pulled in and as usual I left with a $24 bill because I left with unique items that you can't get in the big chains like huge fresh made pork tamales, beef chorizo, birria de res and some salsa smoked sausage. The place is set up farmers market style with a basket of the produce for one price and it's too much for me but but it works for most shoppers. They have fresh hot food also among all the regular store items and fresh meats like goats head and pork spine. This is just one of those Milwaukee hidden gems so today I'm leaving a review and pictures of my great visit. read more

BEWARE! CUIDADO! They put a thumb on the scale when weighing fruit to charge you more. Went home, weighed the same items on a scale at home, and everything came out to 1/4-1/2 of the weight that they charged us for. Incredible selection of veggies and fruits, including hard to find ones like nopales, guava.... You can buy cases of fruit like blueberries for $8! Also an incredible selection (and prices) on spices! They have what I call "dump baskets" of fruits/veggies that are imperfect or need to be used up ASAP for next to nothing. Got 8 1/2 pound zucchs for $2 and 3 sleeves of celery for $1. Deli in back serves GREEN juice from heaven. It's well worth the $5.99! Ingredients are: spinach, celery, cactus, aloe, watercress, parsley, kale, pineapple, orange. Honey is optional but is not needed. Helpful, bilingual Spanish/English staff are welcoming. This is going to be my number One place now for fruits and vegetables. 1 dollar, buckets 2 buck buckets and 3 buck buckets. We ended up getting all kinds of salad fixings, tomatoes, limes, garlic, peppers, onions the selections is great and shopping on Monday is the way to go because on the weekends this place gets busy! Up front as Cory Z. said they still have the deal of the day. You can't go wrong with a whole tray of strawberries for a dollar! A whole case! You need to use them fast as they were clearance. Hell... buy it and give half away to neighbors. They also have a small prepped food deli to get your carnitas and BBQ. The staff here are always busy but they take the time to help you find exactly what you need. Use a basket for quick in and out or get a cart and park it, to do your hunt and gathering with ease. Shh. We also like seeing all of our friends who also shop at El Rey's. within the hour. as they have good deals too. The problem is that you have to be very very careful and extremely judgmental of what is being sold at Pete's. I initially saw this store as a hidden gem. Off the beaten path location, hard to believe prices, friendly staff. What's not to love?!? Then I realized, Pete's will basically sell you shit during a shit storm -- for a discounted price, that is (cue the pearly white smile and chime glisten over the teeth). Just because crap is cheap does it make it a good buy? Answer: no. Crap is still shit. Now, before I provide direct examples, let me say that I will shop at Pete's again. I'll just be much more weary of good deals. And more aware of the dishonesty going on here to make a buck. And because of my previous great review, my newly known truths need to be accounted for. At the front of the store you'll see baskets of items for an insane price -- $2 to $3 for things that cost the same price but for only one handful of that basket at a regular grocery store. It's so inexpensive its mind boggling. But lift a few up. Go ahead. No bargain hunter minds a bruise or scar here and there, but sometimes you'll see pure, inglorious rot. But let me get to the real source of my pissed-off-ness. And I swear on the life of every infant ever born, it's the honest to god truth. Green bananas. Pete's had an insane bargain price on unripened bananas. A big-ass basket for like two bucks. I buy one basket. There were so many green bananas that I split 4 ways: my home, my work, my neighbor, my grandma. We all had green bananas. Then....... The wait. I do not shit anyone dear god I waited for so many weeks for these bananas to turn anything less than spearmint green. (Funny that I happen to prefer unripened bananas, but even those need to have a pinch of yellow before being edible) WEEKS AND WEEKS go by. The bananas stay the exact same color as day one just like the McDonalds museum where the food never disintegrates. I'm not kidding. How could a month go by and nothing happen to the green bananas??? I don't know WTF is going on at Pete's but that this oddity could happen, something isn't right. This is why they were offering this insane price for green bananas. It was for a reason. And that's what bugs me most. I think they knew something was wrong w the green bananas and they knowingly marked them down to try and charge people to get rid of them instead of disposing of the inedible fruit, which would be the righteous thing to do. After 2-3 weeks I did actually rip one open. The fruit inside was hard as a rock. So strange. Unpeelable/inedible. My purchase ended up being a charitable donation because I never received any food for my payment. There are unnatural things going on here. And terrible instances of ripping hard working people off convincing them they might be getting a bargain. Be very weary. read more

I've been going to the one up on north for a few months now, and this place has fruits and veggies I've had issue finding in my area, and some I've never even heard of! Gorgeous produce, great prices, and excellent energy. I got a basket of rambutans that are fresher than I've seen in most grocery stores for just 4 dollars, and I could not be happier. Can't wait to go back once I have a bit more money on hand! The fresh cheeses and baked goods are definitely on the list for next time : ) read more

First thing when you walk into this place, you notice how organized and clean it is. The aisles aren't overcrowded like El Rey is. I went for a special posted on Facebook. I purchased an entire flat of strawberries for $6.00 and a huge basket of grapes for $2.00. They had a huge variety of Hispanic meats and deli items as well as a lot of Hispanic sundries and other speciality items. The staff was friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back! I'm a bit late, but visited the new building for the first time tonight. It's a family owned business and on past visits, I'd see Pete out front cutting fresh fruit and giving samples to his customers as he greets them. The address stayed the same, but the building is adjacent to the old building, sharing the same parking lot. The entrance is accessible from Union St, basically one block west of 16th Street at Greenfield Ave. You can now see the building when driving on 16th Street, so that will definitely improve visibility. The new building is obviously larger, brighter and has that new building smell. Ok, there is no new building smell, but you get the idea. It looks great! I asked a few questions and I'm told they plan to continue looking for ways to improve. That attitude of continous improvement is always refreshing in a business. They will eventually tear down the old building after a party for the employees to "say goodbye" to the old building. In addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables, they've added a full section of fresh meats and deli that also carries some hot items (tonight feature chicken chimichangas for $1.50, birria, barbacoa, and a few other goodies). You'll also find fresh bakery items, some Hispanic food items, and other staples you'd find in a grocery store, such as dairy, breads, cereals, etc., to provide you with a one-stop neighborhood shopping experience. One thing that remains unchanged is great fruits and vegetables at great prices. For example, tonight I saw a pint of blueberries for $1.50 ! We went to Pete's Fruit Market and started browsing around wondering, "where do they get this produce?" Some of the produce was priced low, but upon closer inspection, we realized it was bruised, moldy, or about to go bad. Be sure to examine whatever you're buying carefully, or it won't be such a good deal. There was a lot of selection of items that were a great deal, especially if you're just going to cook with them. One of the things I noticed is that the items when you first walk in may not be a better deal than the bushels to the left. for example, the grapes at the entryway were 2.50/lb., but a lot of them were going bad when we opened the bag. On the left, they had 5# baskets of grapes for $3. I'm guessing they were grapes that could be salvaged from older bags, but I have no idea. Either way, we found better looking grapes in the 5# baskets. All in all, I think it's pretty competitive with Cermak. We would go there for peppers for grilling (they looked a bit wrinkly for eating raw, but okay for cooking), or veggies to cut up for chili, soup, ratatouille, etc. We didn't look at the non-produce items and we also didn't look at their deli, but they have both. Finally, it was quite funny that there was a sign for corn. It read 4 for $2.00, or $.40 each. So, buy corn in increments of three and read the signage carefully or you may be subject to a fourth ear penalty. :) read more

I really enjoyed my trip to Pete's the produce was bountiful as you can see by pictures. I usually buy bananas, grapes and strawberries. Some of the fruit wasnt a steal and some of it was such as the sweet peppers. A basket of yellow peppers where 2 bucks I believe, the issue is that they were all yellow and I like variety. I dont stay near Pete's which makes is inconvenient for me regardless of price. I would tell others and I might also go back if i were near or on that side of town. I didnt spend much time in the store but it was good for the time I was there. read more

Whenever I'm up in this area. I always stop by to get fresh fruit. Really Good quality produce.

I always make time to go here when I'm in town, even if I don't specifically need something since the produce deals are great and there's quite the variety. I'm usually able to find an unusual fruit or two at a good price and in the summer they have a variety of garden plants available. The produce is mostly sold in small baskets and you can buy it at a lower price if you're okay buying something that is starting to wilt or that is close to expiring. If you do any kind of canning or make mass quantities of something, stopping here is a no-brainer. One year I bought 3lbs of ginger root for $4 and made large batches of ginger-flavored treats for everyone for Christmas. There is usually some 'close-out' deal by the exit where they have a crazy good deal on something. I've purchased various berries this way and usually come home to find that 1/3-1/2 of the berries were moldy, which makes the price even out to being a pretty good deal instead of a crazy steal - as long as you go through the berries, wash them and then use/freeze them right away, of course. I've never eaten at the counter in the back by the meat section but my family loves it. I have gotten cold drinks and ice cream from the truck out front which is great in the hot summer. read more

If you only remember one thing, it's that you MUST use produce purchased here within 48 hours at most! The prices - great! The selection - great! The produce - teetering on the very edge of over-ripeness/rotting. So be prepared to put all of it to use very quickly. And don't get too giddy about your great deals without checking the entire package thoroughly. Case is point - on a recent visit blueberries were two pints for $1. Amazing deal, right? It was until I flipped over about a dozens cartons and EVERY ONE had mold growing inside the berries. Yikes! Be smart, use fast, save money! read more

Seems to be more of a Mexican grocery store than a fruit store. Seems to have a decent variety of fruits, mostly sold in bulk portions. I had a couple of honey crisp apples that I thought were in season and wasn't impressed. I will go back during the fruit season and see if I have a better experience. Great selection. The prices were great too. I noticed that the items I got super cheap also went bad super fast. So I am not really impressed by the quality of their items. I love Pete's Fruit Market. Open 365 days a year until 9:30 PM, this is the place to buy produce when one can't find a farmer's market. The produce is fresh and will last much longer than the produce you buy at the grocery store. Plus, the prices are very reasonable. If you are on a budget, check out the baskets of produce in the center of the store. They are ripe, edible, and cheap. $1 for a basket of oranges? Incredible. Pete's is awesome! Great place for produce at ridiculously cheap prices. Tons of less typical items that you won't usually find at the grocery store and they are not considered "specialty" items here so you won't get overcharged for uniqueness. The new building is quite large and nice compared to the old space. Love the guy who yells (auctioneer style) about the latest and greatest deals being offered. You can get awesome prices but sometimes it's not as fresh or isn't going to last as long so plan on going home and doing some work to get things freezing to use later. The new space is even more impressive with aisles and aisles of produce. Everything from your basics to more exotics. And although they have great deals on bulk (think giant buckets full of limes) they also provide a good value for the average person. It can be a tad overwhelming on the weekends, just go with it and be prepared to navigate the crowd and wait in line. I think it's worth it. read more

I grew up here and never new this place existed. This place was recommended by a raw / vegan foodist. Our family loves fresh grown produce, perferably organic, clean, unsprayed etc... Pete's is the kind of store I remember going to with my father growing up. So of course, I got the warm fuzzies. I first noticed how clean the store was and the employees looked happy while working (good sign). The produce was fantastic. They had a nice selections of nuts in the shells, and out. In-addition, a deli, hot and cold. The only down side was nothing is labeled to let the consumer know where the items come from. Currently, it's not growing season here. It must be from a hot house or imported. I didn't feel a waxy coat on anything. There's a strong mexican vibe which I was excited about. It's a family run business which is nice. As other recent reviews have noted, Pete's has moved into a new and much larger space on the same lot, and it is awesome. One of the mildly frustrating things about the old space was that there was so much crammed into such a small space, and it was legitimately hard to maneuver, especially in the produce area. The new Pete's thankfully retains the charm of the old space but is much more spacious and comfortable to shop in. The produce area is even better because there are more items. The selection before was great, and now it's just amazing. All the standards are here plus exotic fruits, unusual vegetables used in any Latin and Asian cooking, and more. The prices are still amazing, especially on all the discount basket items. About those discount baskets, if you are having a party and need bulk produce of almost any variety, you really should go here. It's amazing. And it's not just good prices - the fruit and veggies here - although not organic - are really good. The grocery section is also much larger, and as others have mentioned, the store now boasts a nice deli, more dairy, and a big meat department. They still carry the awesome "El Milagro" tortillas, as well as fresh masa if you are so inclined to make your own tortillas or other delicious corn-based products. In addition to produce they package their own dry goods like nuts, beans (many varieties), raisins, lentils, and herbs, which are generally very well-priced. Oh, and 'Quesadillas How Many For You' is outside with a truck on Union Street again, for those looking for a special treat. read more

My go-to fruit market in the city. I almost always buy my produce exclusively from Pete's. They have some of the best deals of fruits and veggies in the city. Who doesn't love buying a huge bucket of lemons for three bucks? Come on! I also love their wide variety of rices, beans and Hispanic cooking ingredients. Whenever in Milwaukee (Green Bay just under 2-hours) I try to shop at Pete's Fruit Market for the reasons similar to what has been mentioned by other reviews. In turn, I periodically distribute the goodies I've purchased to people I know who will not waste fresh fruit. I like the store Milwaukee locations, which seem to be away from the "high income districts." On more than one occasion I've seen Pete's staff offer fresh fruit and hot cooked samples for customer approval (yummy). I've seen managers encourage shoppers to consider an incredible deal that I'd have otherwise missed under the assumption that it was out of my budget (whole tray of blackberries for the same price of a quart at Costco). Pete's Fruit Market is a fantastic place to go get groceries, especially produce. There is definitely a wide variety of produce (among other things) to pick from. What is nice is that there is produce in little baskets for super cheap. You just have to remember to use that produce quickly because I believe it is the produce that is close to going bad. I went back to Pete's yesterday I scored a basket of plantains that normally costs .99 lb for $2 and I know had more than a pound when I weighed it. I figured out a what the name of the fruit that looked like an orange tomato is called sharon fruit. This is only place in town where you can purchase frozen frog legs. Ewwww. read more

I just moved to Milwaukee from Denver. We used to have a great chain in Colorado called Sprouts. They had amazing deals until they got greedy and became ran by accountants and suits. Pete's is everything that I liked about Sprouts, plus they have a nice Latin flavor that adds a bit of pizzazz. I bought over 60 pounds of product and paid a hair over 40 bucks. You have to know how to pick fruits and vegetables, but if you do have a small bit of savvy you will wind up with an amazing deal. I am sure that I will be back there every week to refill my fridge. You may need to do something with it that day, but the price makes it worthwhile. Today we bought some _very_ ripe strawberries for $1. At checkout we were offered an entire case for $1.50. We passed on it, but it was tempting. Yep, we had to go through our fruit and cut out some bad spots, but it was good fruit just starting to head past its prime. The zoo of people during the busy times cause gridlock in and around this store. It's the only reason I have to give this place four stars instead of five. Pete's Fruit Market is a one-of-kind place I wished MORE people outside of the Southside Milwaukee area visited. Being that my mother knows a good bargain and fills me in a good steal, she and I have shopped at Pete's since its inception and have become really good friends with the owners. When she enters, every employee knows exactly who she is, it's absolutely hilarious, considering she goes there multiple times during the week and more often than your regular grocery store. I think the produce they offer is great and is always offered at a reasonable price, plus it stays fresh for a very long time. Like many people have stated, so many steals on fruits and vegetables. The employees are very helpful and usually there are enough younger people who know English you can communicate with if you're a non-Spanish speaker. Great selection of Mexican spices, candy, drinks, and deserts as well. I suggest everyone go here at least once and make sure you don't leave without getting something from that elote stand!
