Visiting Barthel Fruit Farm in the fall is an annual tradition. We've been coming here for years to pick apples. It's super busy in the weekends in the fall, and over the years they've added more, such as music, hot drinks and snacks, and did I see a corn maze this year? In addition to apples, you can pick pumpkins and buy squash. Plus there are plants and herbs in the spring and summer. We pick a variety of apples as well as purchase some honey crisps from the store. Really love coming here and recommend it! read more

This is THE place to go for apple picking. I LOVED being able to walk down the rows of orchards for the various types of apples and even climb a ladder to get the apples at the top. When you enter you are given a bag - apples are priced per bag rather than by weight which is awesome. We fit about 40 apples in the small bag! The apples were excellent quality- truly delicious! (Also try the blondees- they are delicious! You can thank me later). In addition to apples, they have various snacks, pumpkins and squashes. This is my favorite place to buy local apples, especially the honey crisp variety. Confession: I've never gone apple picking here. I love the convenience of buying from inside their barn. During the fall season they have a food truck in the parking lot selling apple donuts and other baked goods; my family enjoys them, but I have a cinnamon allergy so I cannot really report on that. I will say their cider is a big hit with my family. And, I do really like Barthel's caramel apples; their portion of caramel is generous - a thick coating with a great flavor. read more

We had such a nice time picking apples and pears! Barthel is a great local option for fruit, gourd, and pumpkin picking and has plenty of extras, like apple treats, pre-picked apples, brats & other savory foods, a beer garden, and corn maze. When we were there, they had an Oktoberfest happening which was fun. The apple varieties were nice and they had about a half dozen kinds when we went the third weekend of September. The pears were a fun bonus - delicious, and pretty unique to be able to pick your own! For a peck sized bag, it was about $19, and a 1/2 bushel was $29. We got the peck and it was plenty for us. You pay on your way out which was a little confusing - you pay as you drive out. All in all we had a good experience and would return! read more

This year I also picked up pears, applesauce, and naturally some Apple butter. It's always so relaxing to walk through the Apple trees and drink Apple cider after the corn maze. Barthel Fruit Farm has just about everything you're looking for when it comes to an apple orchard. They've got a large variety of apples to choose from when you're picking; a small store full of seasonal goods such has pumpkin butter, apple salsa, fresh apple cider and more; cornhole; and even a food truck with fresh apple cider donuts and apple fritters. On top of all of that, Barthel has a pumpkin patch so you can pick up a pumpkin or gourd at the same time! The cashier in the little story gave me a pro tip to bake the apple salsa over chicken. I've been to this orchard twice now, and I've never found it to be too crowded, which I think is a huge problem at other orchards. Would recommend a visit to Barthel! read more

Date of visit: September 9, 2023 I'm not a big apple fan so I am generally unlikely to be found apple picking, but a friend's company was hosting an event and they graciously invited us along and it was very enjoyable. While the place seems quite large, there were only a few areas for picking at the time with just a couple of varieties of apple: zestar (never heard of them!) and McIntosh. We were able to fill a bag and there were also plums to choose from. In addition to the picking, there is a "bakery" that offers a variety of sweet treats and drinks. The apple cider is fantastic, but then again, I've always been a sucker for that stuff. I also tried a pumpkin cookie and while it was pretty good, it was very small for 75 cents. 2 for $1 would have been a better value and more fitting for what you get. The store area has a fair amount of items beyond apples; I scored some pumpkin butter (how fabulous does that sound?) and apple salsa that should be a big hit when fall rolls around soon. Staff are pretty friendly, and they discourage credit cards with a 3% cash discount; I appreciated that more than jacking up the price for paying with a card. Overall, a very nice place though parking can be a bit of a challenge, especially if there's been recent rain--the whole joint would become a mud bog! read more

Great farm for apple picking! They have several varieties of apples as well as pears to pick. The pricing was surprisingly low at $18 for a peck bag (10lbs) which is less than most grocery store prices and way less than most other orchards charge. They had a nice shop to get products from as well as a bakery and beverage food truck for some refreshments which had apple cider slush and donuts. read more

This is my "go to" place for a great selection of apples, pears and a nice variety of preserved products like apple butter, peach salsa, applesauce. I am not a fruit picker so I visit their barn for already picked apples and pears in 1/4, 1/2 and full peck bags. Varieties change as the crops ripen. Many orchards around the Chicagoland and Milwaukee area will charge you by the person even if they are not picking apples. But here you only for what you pick. Plenty of spread out parking and things to harvest! If you do not feel like picking then stop by the gift shop and choose from bags of assorted apple types. So much fun!! Went Apple picking with a friend on an unseasonably warm Friday afternoon. The orchard was beautiful and we were able to pick plenty of spotless apples! I've been going to Barthel, literally, for decades. Recently, it changed hands. Last time I was there, I couldn't even park my car because of the long lines for bakery. The place was mobbed. I always loved Barthel because they didn't let commercialism get the best of them; this is no longer the case. Between the beer garden, the bakery, and god knows what else, it's no longer the same place. Also, they've nixed the strawberry picking. Went on a super-crowded weekend when everyone wanted to get fresh air during the pandemic. Not everyone was wearing masks, but the staff were atleast. Lots of apple varieties, I was happy with Cortland. No map or samples though. Nice they have metal ladders for people to use gratis. Which is good because some of those apples are up there. Biergarten is a nice addition. The corn maze looked small, but those stalks had some boost of auxin or something because they were like 12' tall. It was actually kinda eerie. Highly recommend. Pumpkins and gourds were many and varied and great to u-pick. We actually had a problem where we were charged $6 a gourd and not per peck. I emailed them and they sorted it out quickly. Only bad part is the shop is tiny. But everything else is great. It's the best one-stop fall fun spot. Give it a try. read more

Our family has been going here for years for apple picking and pumpkin picking in the fall. This year, my 6-year-old son and I went for strawberry picking in early July. With COVID canceling most other outdoor activities, the fields were busy and full with families. But there was still plenty of space to spread out and stay safe. We picked 11 pounds and the strawberries were perfectly ripe and delicious. They just announced that their strawberries are now closed for the season, just 7 days after opening (it's normally about three weeks). I drove 40 minutes and upon arrival was told they were not picking gourds, which what I drove for. I showed the girl at the entrance the website and her response was just that someone else that am had said the same thing and apparently it couldn't have been fixed by 4pm? I also was interested in honeycrisp. The girl couldn't tell me how much longer they'd be picking them. There's NO way I could have filled a small bag of pick your own. We drove to Barthel to get some apples and pumpkins for fall. It was kind of far from us as we live in West Milwaukee, but it was worth it. We would have picked our own apples and pumpkins, but it was really rainy, cold and gross. When we arrived, they had a nice system for parking. Pick your own on the right, everyone else to the left. We walked into the barn and there were tons of different apples already packed in pecks and other sizes. For each apple there was a description as well as suggestions for how to eat it - pies, sauces, snacking, etc. It was really nice and really helpful in terms of what we should buy for pies and just plain old eating. In addition to apples, they also had pears. In fact, they had a free pear for visitors, it was the best pear I've ever had. It was juicy and soft and I wanted to buy a ton of them, but I wouldn't have eaten them and the apples. We ended up buying 2 pecks of apples and 2 pumpkins ($4 each!) and picked up some recipes. I used some of the apples to bake mini-apple pies that tasted great and we ate the others in slices. I'd recommend going here and next time I hope it's nice enough that we can pick our own apples. I forgot to write a review of Barthel's when I initially went apple picking in October but I had a great time and definitely wanted to share. This was my first ever apple picking experience so I'm very grateful to have had such a smooth first experience here. From my understanding, the biggest difference between Barthel's and places like Apple Holler is that you can actually drive your car into the farm here and park your car next to whichever orchards you want to pick from. For those who don't want to pick their own apples, you can also purchase pre-picked ones in their store. I'm seeing other reviews regarding not having access to a ladder to reach apples up high and strict rules about eating apples while picking. This was definitely not the case when I went this year. There was access to multiple ladders and we got up high to grab some of the good ones. Additionally, my friends and I were all eating apples while picking and were not reprimanded by any staff. Everybody was friendly and the service was very efficient. We did not get the chance this time, but I know that you can also pick pumpkins and strawberries when they are in season! read more

Very cool place! The orchard is huge and it was a lot of fun picking apples. They have pumpkin patch, gourd patch and lots of apples to pick! Very family friendly. I found Barthel's on a list of pick your own places in SE WI. The first two places I called south of MKE weren't open. One was picked over this weekend and needed a few days and the other wasn't quite ready. I was thrilled when I called Barthel's and found out it was the first day for strawberry picking. I picked about 15 pounds of berries in 45 minutes. Berries were easy to find within assigned row and are super flavorful! Staff in the field and at the weigh station were nice too. There are better options in the Milwaukee area. As you enter, you are informed apple thieves will be prosecuted. In fact you are told this over and over again. Not the vibe I'm looking for with family fun. Prior to leaving, they searched our vehicle to make sure we weren't stealing. While there are positive attributes to this place, being searched for stolen apples guarantees I will never return. There were lots of apple varieties available for picking that day. You drive to where the picking is going on. There were some ladders spread in the the orchard. This made the job easier since many of the lower boughs were picked clean. Bring cash, they don't take credit cards and there are no atm's anywhere close. Have fun there, I won't. read more

This was my first time at Barthel's because I was in the area for Strawberry Fest in Cedarburg. We arrived about 15 minutes before closing and began to pick right away. After about 10 minutes one staffer came over and told us we shouldn't be picking where we were and to follow directions that we should have known about "where" to be picking in a rather rude way. Others that came after us actually had the rules explained to them in a kinder fashion. The place is also plastered with signs saying that they don't tolerate theft. Is it OK to eat berries off the plants!? During checkout you have to go thru a military checkpoint with the trunk open and your car is subject to search. Really? On a positive note, the berries were fantastic and they look to grow a variety of other produce. If I was in the area again I'd probably stop back but I won't go out of my way to come here again. There are many other farms where they treat their customers with more respect. read more

When it comes to strawberry picking in the MKE area - I think Barthel's. Friendly service. Easy in and out. The price is right as well! Be sure to call ahead, picking times change due to weather, crop, etc... This year's crop was super sweet. Apples, apples, apples galore! And more? Yes!!! I was impressed with the amount and quality of fruit available for picking at Barthel. We snagged plenty of apple varieties, including Cortland, Jonathan, Ozark Gold, Spartan, and Fuji and promptly turned those Cortland into the best damn applesauce I've ever tasted. The staff were excellent, answered questions with ease, and my wife thought it particularly cute the amount of young'n's working to distribute bags and direct cars. For $10, get an all-you-can-pick and fill bag of autumn goodness. We will definitely return to Barthel for pumpkins, plums, and pears. It's about the same time (though a few less miles) to head up here if you're looking for something different than Elegant Farmer (read: picking only, no deli/food smorgasbord). read more

Say what you will about those big apple places (Apple Holler, Elegant Farmer), but they're busy because they know how do to Apple Season. Our Barthels apples look great, and I appreciated the smaller size and less touristiness nature of the place, but they weren't very accommodating, with constant reminders that YOU MUST PAY FOR EVERY APPLE PICKED! FAILURE TO PAY FOR AN APPLE CONSTITUTES THEFT! THIEVES WILL BE PROSECUTED! Picking with four kids under five, who are used to being able to snack on an apple while picking really lit a fire under us to get in and out and put a damper on the experience. We couldn't find any apple picking extender-reachy things so we were limited to the lower branches. Barthels only has portable potties they and make you pay separately for apples and anything else. They told us that if we wanted to park near the shop after picking apples, we'd have to go out, past the shop and open parking spots, and wait in line to come back in and repark. What sense?! There was another small orchard down the road from Barthels, which we'll give a try next time. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid. It really hasn't changed much for the best. It isn't touristy and the employees are all very nice. The quality is high--respectable stores such as the Outpost carry their fruit. They are known to use very little pesticides on their fruit which is a plus. There is a wide variety of fruit but they are known for their apples and pumpkins. I highly recommend Barthel's. The Barthel family work very hard to bring Milwaukee some of the best fruit...especially apples and pears. read more
