First time here. Came with another couple. It was a Thursday night, and we had 6:30 reservations…read more The place is a small, friendly looking standalone building on the corner. When you arrive, there is a bar with a seating area. There is also another seating area with a separate bar, which is where we sat. What I noticed first is that there are TVs set up throughout the restaurant playing Moonstruck, the 1987 movie with Cher and Nicolas Cage. It runs continuously, and I think without sound. I didn't have a direct line of sight, but I did notice it a few times throughout the evening. It's a quirky thing, and I like it. The inside is dimly lit, but bright enough to read menus and make out all the essentials. The lighting on the bars is a rich red, and it really sets off those areas. The walls are adorned with photos of iconic Italian female movie stars like Sophia Loren. I liked the classic vibe. The place was very loud. We were seated right away and settled in with waters, drinks, and menus. Our server did a nice job walking us through the menu details. It's mostly specialty pizzas, with a few appetizers, salads, and a couple of entrees. For drinks, there were a couple of Santino Sangrias, which were unique in that they included gin, a nice touch. There was also a Paper Plane Martini, which was very good too. I mentioned before that it was loud, and it was especially loud with a large group behind us. It got much better when they cleared out. I noticed that they have sound absorbing materials on some of the walls, which probably helps, just not enough. For dinner, we started off with a couple of Caesar salads. They were a good portion and easily shared by two. The dressing was fresh and the right amount. It was a great start to the meal. I would have liked to try the calamari, but nobody else was interested, maybe next time. There were three pizzas at the table, Margherita, Paisan, and a make your own with cheese, sausage, mushroom, and onion. I decided to be different and tried the Gigante Meatball Plate. The pizzas are Neapolitan, with bubbly, charred edges. All of them had excellent presentation and flavor. Neapolitans are not known for their sturdy centers, so you have to hold on tight to keep everything from sliding off. As expected, the meatball was very large. It's served with penne pasta, which was okay, though I would have preferred spaghetti. The sauce and cheese had good flavor. A solid entree, though not amazing. We were celebrating a birthday, so we saved room for a few shared desserts. We tried the flourless cake, tiramisu, and the chocolate hazelnut gelato. They were all good choices, satisfying, but again, not amazing. Lots to like about this place. Nice atmosphere, great service (thanks Tommy), and an excellent selection of pizzas. Would come back again, and this time order one of the specialty pizzas (Da Vinci).

I moved to Bay View about 18 months ago, and learned of Tenuta's when I drove by one day on a tour…read moreof my new neighborhood. I thought it looked charming, a hold-over from an era not that far in the past, but generally gone. I looked forward to dining there, but it took a recent invitation from new friends to get me through the door. The only reservation we could get was for 4:30. Hmmmmm...OK, I figured we'd be the sole patrons at that time of day, but I was wrong. And that tells you one thing you need to know: Tenuta's is popular, and rightly so. Despite being generally more adventurous in my choices, I ordered the pesto. I judge every Italian place by its bruschetta (on the menu but not ordered) and its pesto, and Tenuta's passed my personal test with flying colors. The most pleasing things about the dish were the very generous amounts of tasty sauce on the pasta, chicken, and zucchini. The least pleasing was the pale orange of the very underripe cherry tomatoes included. Companions had the nightly special (gnocci with bacon and a gorgonzola sauce) and the Calabrese, a tantalizingly spicy dish. Everything was perfect. Desserts ordered were the tiramisu (a large portion) and butterscotch boudino, a dreamy cup of butterscotch pudding, homemade butterscotch sauce, whipped cream, and a bit of sea salt. Service was quick, professional, and friendly. The restaurant is small, but cozy and welcoming.

A hidden little potato salad gem!…read more Random enough I discovered we have a potato salad factory in our own backyard! After seeing the name, Country Maid on a tub of potato salad I did some searching and realized I've probably driven by over a dozen times. Online they showcase a variety of prepared salads and it said they sell sandwiches at their factory store, so I went to check it out. Inside they have several fridges with prepared salads some sweet and mostly savory in variety of sizes. It appears that they have a sandwich special once a day during certain hours. I end up purchasing a variety of salads to try and the friendly clerk offered me several forks and I had a potato taste test in the car which was a first! The woman who helped me was very friendly and patient. They offer platters and larger salad portions for special events if you call ahead. A few customers trickled I while I was there and seemed to be regulars from our small talk. One said the tuna salad was good and couldn't beat the price. My favorite potato salad was the grandmas and I loved the Greek pasta salad. Definitely keep in mind for your next gathering!
