This is such a unique store. They have been in business for 23 years. They seem to have a lot of repeat customers from what I heard. The store has a lot of things you will not find in your usual big box stores. Probably none of what they sell here will you find elsewhere. I love their plant selection. They have so many I never heard of or saw before. The employees put a lot of care into the treatment of the plants they sell. I saw an employee carefully watering the plants. She was very focused. Some of the prices are on the steep side. I would definitely shop here for plants if I lived in the area. That plant section was my favorite part of the store.

Super cute general store that has a modern feel. They have so much from books, house decor, plants, etc. This is the perfect shop to find unique gifts for anyone. Definitely a nice local general store worth checking out.

MOD GEN is another place that I absolutely have to visit every time I'm in Milwaukee! It's such a cute shop, selling novelty items like books, mugs, candles, gems, minerals and cards just to name a few (there's so much more). But what I go there for are the plants! So many plants! Tropical plants, cacti, flowering plants...And plants of all sizes! When you check out, they print out care sheets for each of your plants, which is really nice to have! Any staff I've interacted with has always been very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

    Moldy soil even after repotting!

I like coming in here because it's cute and the store is exciting to look at. But both plants I've purchased from this store have had issues. One had moldy soil, the other had root rot. Then they charged us to fix the root rot when we brought it back. And expensive

MOD GEN is a delight. Billed as a modern take on the traditional general store that once flourished in communities, MOD GEN offers an array stylish household goods for the contemporary shopper. They have lovely supply of stationary, gift wrap, coffee table books, quirky and useful kitchen items, candles, crystals, soaps and more. But, the star of the show? Their houseplant selection. Particularly, their succulent selection. A-mazing! They have a wonderful assortment of houseplants that are all lush and lovely. They're incredibly knowledgeable and will help set you up for success with your new living home addition. I found their prices on plants to be reasonable, while the prices on other items more inline with what you might expect to pay at a chic downtown gift shop (which, of course, makes sense). Get to it!

Fun little shop in the third ward. Novelties, live plants, tons of planters, toys and cards. I'm definitely coming back here soon! Finding parking can be a chore, but it's worth it. I was almost overwhelmed with the selection of unique gifts and decor. Soaps, candles and room sprays lend an inviting smell as you walk in and linger as you walk around the shop to view some unique and uniquely WI gifts. I came to look at plants! They're all around the store but the main selection is in the back. Cacti, succulents, tropical and otherwise. I was actually surprised at the quality and health of their selection. The ceramic planters and cache pots were all beautiful and some whimsical. I'm basically a hoarder of pretty ceramics so I had to browse fast to do as little damage to my wallet as possible. You'll need to look both high and low but the main selection is against the far back wall. And conveniently, so I'd a little clearance section. I had to also practice restraint when walking past the kitchen items and baby/toddler toys that would have made perfect gifts for some family and friends. A lot of the toys looked handmade or sustainably sourced. Beautifully made and - I feel I'm overusing it now - unique. I did buy a plant and two cute pots. I really liked that they printed plant care instructions on the receipt, and the cashier offered to pot up the plant I purchased(but I had a different one at home I would use). It's a thoughtful touch and I will take them up on that offer next trip ... when I buy some larger pots that I NEED to have in my house.

    Two plants and matching pots.

The workers are so sweet and knowledgeable about plants and how to care for them, so I felt very comfortable coming to them with questions about my purchases. I found so many plants for great prices, and I was surprised to find a ton of great quality plants under $15! I will definitely be a returning customer! My picture shows two plants from the store, as well as pots from there.

Drawbacks: Pricey. Parking is a little time consuming. Ugh. So what. Still five stars. Customer service is solid. I mean solid. I just love this place and the people. And the vibe. I feel relaxed and in awe every time I'm here, almost as a child would. Ohh, be careful too because when I'm here I want everything. It's a lovely place to be just to be. You'll definitely find some plants here that you may not easily find elsewhere. And, the plants here are very happy. Staff are very knowledgeable about plants and plant care and staff will go above and beyond to help customers. They also offer planting services. You'll find cards, kitchen gadgets, dining linens and other lovely things here. Mod Gen is situated in a dynamic walkable neighborhood. So, plan to explore beyond the store. You'll find other stores, restaurants and more. And, you're not far from The Lake or The Streetcar to explore even more.

This place is the cutest. I came in with a friend looking for a gift and ended up buying a plant for myself. They're great at letting you know the proper care instructions for any plant you pick out and even repotted it for me for a small fee. COVID Precautions: Probably one of the best I've seen. They have a very limited capacity for patrons allowed in at one time, hand sanitizer available upon entrance, and all guests and employees are required to wear masks.

A small shop with unique items that makes you feel like a tourist, which we are, but not feel like a tourist trap. Neat little items from pots to fragrant oils and cute Christmas tree ornaments. Lots of stuff in here to get for home decorations or souvenirs!

MOD GEN is so fun to go to! It has so many unique gifts. The best part is the section of plants and fun planters. It all started with a Valentine's Day cactus and became a total cactus/succulent hobby for me. The staff is super helpful and can provide education about the plants and their care. I asked about plants that may be harmful to my cat and they had a whole print out for me. They are friendly and welcoming. I always leave with tons of stuff and never regret it!

Hi, This is Dominic the reviewer. Today I went to MOD GEN General store. It is located in the Third Ward at 211 N. Broadway St, Milwaukee, WI 53202 I got to meet the general manager, Doug. He told me that the store has been around for 21 years and opened in the Historic Third Ward 4 years ago. They originally were located in Shorewood. Doug said it originally started with mostly garden goods and then they expanded and branched out to more items like gifts and more to make it a general store. Doug said the plants have become their top seller in the store. They have all kinds of cool items inside the store like plants, cactuses, books, soaps, gifts, kitchen items, greeting cards, pots and assorted gifts for anybody or for your house or where ever you live. I thought this store was especially unique and very cool. I would definitely recommend checking this store out for sure. the general manager Doug was very kind to talk to about the background of the general store and how it became very special like it is today. They are opened Wednesday-Sunday 11am-6pm.

We picked the evening to go hoping to see the beautiful yellow lights (and I recommend you to go in the evening too - same food same drinks same shops but the view is more beautiful). The ornaments and lights indeed made it festive, but there were surprisingly not many tents and people. And there was no music. The market felt kind of tiny, empty and quiet on the huge, open Fiserv Forum Plaza ground. Maybe as the holiday season approaches, the vibe will get better. Here are the things that we did and enjoyed: 1. Got the warm, creamy, rich Belgian hot chocolate in the super cute Milwaukee souvenir mug. It's $11 with the mug which is pricey for such a small size of drink. But I liked the mug a lot and thought sharing a mug of hot chocolate with someone you love on a cold winter evening is kind of sweet. 2. Different handmade crafts from Germany, blankets from Peru, outwear, tea, coffee cakes, chocolates, pies, candies, cookies, cream cheese, soap... We walked around the outdoor area to check out all the vendors. It took us less than 30 mins but it was fun. 3. Checked out the indoor Christmas décor and gift shop before getting food. The staff were super nice. 4. Got the Raclette cheese sandwiches! Watching the melty raclette got scraped into the bread was delightful. With $1 extra, you could add a brat to the sandwich with a similar amount of cheese (we thought, as I got one with just raclette and hubby got one with a brat). * My suggestions are: 1) eat the sandwich as soon as possible when it is still warm and moist. Don't spend too much time looking for seats or taking photos lol. 2) Your hands may smell stinky later if you touch the cheese, which is highly likely to happen as there is so much cheese! 5. Found the warming house and sat down and enjoyed some simple, traditional live Christmas music performed by a band.
