The food from KCS has always been on point. My favorite thing to get there is the barbecue fried rice. It's one of the most unique fried rice if you're ever going to get. Now the customer service is definitely hit or miss but who's really going there for that? This place is the epitome of NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER! KC's Southern Style Rice popped up as a recommendation as I was visiting my in-laws in Memphis. I'm a glam, Dallas girl--not the type to try gas station eateries and whole in the walls. So when I saw the shanty trailer that housed all the yummy looking stir-fried rice, I was indeed skeptical. I am a FRIED RICE freak so I still played with the idea of driving out to South Memphis on a Saturday afternoon. My husband isn't a huge rice fan but when he saw the pictures, he said "babe let's go!" So we went... Happy Husband, Happy Life... isn't that how that saying goes? We pulled up and the space looked just like the pictures. Quickly got in line and ordered the one thing I came for--the RIB TIP FRIED RICE. The kindhearted lady at the window told me it would be ready in about 15 minutes. My order was ready in 10. As I took the Styrofoam container from her, I nearly dropped it! I thought $13 for some rice was a little steep but now I understood why--- It had to have weighed 10 lbs! Ya'll, it was bomb, do you hear me!? The rice was piping hot and fresh fresh fresh! Omg, it was so much food! Lawd have mercy! The slightly charred broccoli was the perfect addition to the rice---Makes a difference when its cooked on a flat top! I wish the rib tips were a little more tender but that didn't matter too much to me. The rice itself stole the show, and check this out--they even included BBQ sauce to accompany it. This is one of my favorite little known yet known (that doesn't make any sense but I don't care) places in the Memphis. The line is always long and parking lot is always packed when I go. I started calling ahead of time, but 75% of the time they barely answer the phone. Crazy. The fried rice is great BUT the rib tip fried rice what you need. There was a long line and the wait time was about 30mins but I will admit, I will definitely return.The menu could use some revamping. I am NEVER in this area so when I finally had to run an errand out here, I decided to give it a try after years of hearing about it. I decided to try the Rib Tip fried rice. It only comes in one size for $12. It was a huge container. I didn't get a chance to take a pic because I waited AN HOUR for it. So I checked it and left because I was now late to the other thing I had to do. I never knew the wait was this bad. After you pay, she then tell you 30 mins. Well that turned into an hour. Seriously! im veryyyy disappointed !!! i used to visit KC's regularly but lately the smoky flavor palate has been off . today was the second time i have been in months & each time i was charged for things i didn't receive . normally i would not have to actually check my food before leaving bc they had never disappointed . sadly , now i know it is a must !! so today i called in a order for a large shrimp fried rice w/ extra broccoli & eggs & didn't get it . let me start by saying , i think it is very important for cooks to know how much extra ppl are paying when they request things so that the portion & price is reasonable . visually , i did get a extra egg placed on top of my rice ( instead of mixed in . ) thats very lazy & careless . it did not even balance out my rice at all . it still tasted as if i was eating all rice and onions . my shrimp ; while they are salad shrimp in a large container of rice , i counted only a total of 14 !! & not only that the broccoli in my rice were only stems ! i paid for extra broccoli & didn't get any florets whatsoever ! all in all i went from $16 before tax to $21 on a large shrimp fried rice with extra broccoli & eggs . i dont mind the price but my food was not on point . it was really terrible . i tasted more soy sauce than the smoky flavor i go for !! read more
