I had a very unpleasant experience at Kauai Cycles. I had previously sold Jason (the owner) a bike for $300 with the understanding I could either use it as a trade-in or take cash later. When I returned for the cash, he suddenly mentioned a 20% "search fee" that had never been disclosed. I politely asked to see where this policy was written, and he became defensive and aggressive. Instead of explaining, he told me I could take $240 or leave. When I questioned it further, he tore up the check and told me to get out and never come back. I was shocked. This aggressive behavior was unprofessional and completely unnecessary. I would not recommend doing business here. read more

You will need to bring a backpack to carry your water and essentials as the bikes do not have baskets. The storefront is at the start of the trail and you get the full experience! These guys used to be good, but... I brought my bike in for a flat tire and the Sales rep convinced me to let him shorten the chain. Big mistake! Before I brought it in: no problems with the chain. After he shortened it, I can't even ride the bike up the hill to my house without the chain coming off half a dozen times. So I took the bike back in, to get the damage they'd done *undone* and Jason - the owner - informed me that my bike is "simply no good anymore", they can't fix it, that it was sheer coincidence that the chain stopped working the same day they "fixed" it, and that I need to buy a new bike (presumably from him). I don't know in what world a business breaks a customer's property and then refuses to fix the damage. And in what world they add insult to injury by throwing you out of their shop for daring to request that they repair it. But that's not a world that I want to live in, so I have to warn everybody about this place: if it ain't broke, don't let them "fix" it. And sorry you're so stressed Jason, but there was really no need to take it out on me. It might be time to retire & let somebody who cares take over. Your attitude towards Customer Service was summed up perfectly when I told you that your treatment of me was going to lead to a bad review, and you whiplashed "like I give a sh*t!" This place would have gotten 5 stars if I hadn't seen a rental place that was $10 cheaper (but who knows, maybe the bikes at the other place were crap) and if my bike had a little bell. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They do repairs at this location as well as rent bikes (4 hour or the whole day). The store closed at 4 so we only had about 3 1/2 hours with our bikes but that was enough for me to get a decent cardio workout and a TAN! Just stick to the bike path and if you have time you can go down to one of the beaches along the way. You can't go wrong for $10 per bike on a nice day. It was a great experience. I would recommend it to anyone. They take card too! The bathroom, um, well, you should just use the bathroom at your hotel or in the big blue ocean. It was like a mechanics shop restroom. Not filthy but it was in what seemed to be the storage space and it had no door (there was a door to the storage room). read more

Nice Specialized mountain bikes with full suspension or hard tail for rent here. Clearly better for mountain bike renting than beach cruisers but we had fun anyways. As most other cycle shops have better cruisers but this spot has the mountain biking and higher end adventure bikes. Good to know for getting into trails out here. read more

This is my first negative review. After picking up my bike yesterday I just feel gross. Customer service is so awful. I'm giving two stars because there is a guy that works there that SHOULD be in charge to human interactions, he was kind and personable. And my bike is mostly working. They had my (grandfather's) vintage road bike for a few weeks. Called to say it's done so I drive over from another corner of the island. When I get there a man with no people skills struggles to find my ticket order amongst their outdated paper system. Once my bike is presented I notice they had re-wrapped my bars without my go-ahead and charged me for it. If they ruined what I had on there, why should I be charged for this? After paying close to $200 I take it for a spin- the breaks feel great and it's shifting beautifully, partially. When I go to use the left shifter the chain skips along and won't catch. I go back in the shop and the bad customer service guy fiddles with it, ultimately telling me if I want them to try to get it working it's going to be $45 but might not work bc my bike is so old. I'm bummed because this was not communicated before I drove 40 minutes but want my bike working so I agree and drive away. 5 min later I realize I'm not wanting to go back there so I pick up my bike and go to take off the front tire to load it - and find that the original vintage tire release has been BROKEN so I can't even take off the tire. I go back in, now probably obviously frustrated and point out what they had done. No apologies and the guy says they have nothing, not even a nut that they can provide in its place. The Crew at Kauai Cycle was working hard when I arrived, They stopped and greeted my kindly and took my bike for repairing a flat tire. I was embarrassed that there were spiders on the bike but they gently wiped them off and placed them in the yard! Before working on my tire! I was surprised when they told me that it would just take 20 minutes to repair. I took my dog for a quick walk and when we returned the tire was replaced and ready to go! They gave me good suggestions on bike storage in order to keep the spiders and rust at bay! I felt they were fast efficient and friendly! I would recommend this business read more

Its likely that Kauai Cycle is a fine bike shop, but I intened to rent a road bike for them based on their web site and a returned email inquiry from the shop. When I arrived I noticed a sign on the door saying that they do not rent bikes anymore. What?! A huge disappointment for me. Why didn't they update their web site? Gruff, slow and inflexible service. Road bikes are older and of mediocre quality. I will not be doing business with them again. I first called looking for a road bike to rent for the week. I was told they might have one? OK, so I ask him to go check for me please. He has one left but refused to hold it for me while I drive 30 minutes to go pick it up. Then on return I hit unexpected construction traffic and was at risk of missing my flight. I asked if I could leave the bike locked up somewhere and pay extra for them to pick it up. Nope, they would have charged me $600 for the bike instead of working out something with me. By chance I went into Outfitters Kauai and was pleasantly surprised at their kind attitude, great service and nice bikes. Would highly recommend them over Kauai cycle. read more

This seemed like a solid bike shop. They got the recommendation from our concierge over the more local joint, so I was willing to make the drive. Their selection of bikes (both road and mountain) for rent was also much greater and more available, so that's what won me. I ride a 54cm Fuji Easton road bike at home, and they matched me (nicely!) with a Specialized Allez 54cm. Their road bikes all come with Armadillo tires: trust me, you'll need these, due to roadside debris. They also give you a tool pouch with spare tube, spoons, and hand pump for any roadside fixes. Notably, they lent me SPD clips (I had brought mine with me, but foolishly left them at the hotel). So once I got back, I could just clip in with my shoes, and off I went. Only problem with my bike was that my seat kept slipping down just about 1-2 inches over the course of a ride. Just subtle enough to be obnoxious, and lose pedaling power. My husband initially rented a mountain bike (Rockhopper base model), but exhausted the mountain biking within three days. Note to mountain bikers: unless you want to do the Powerline Trail (which is dozens of miles long) in either sections or one go, there seems to be a limitation of MTB destination. The roads here are, shall we say, undeveloped for serious cycling. To be honest, and to no fault of the bike shop, the lack of bicycle infrastructure is disappointing. While I am the kind who goes out on all roads and in all weather (and believe me, both wind and rain presented challenges here), it's mildly crappy when there is 0.5 inches of shoulder with erratic drivers who aren't seemingly used to cyclists. While a local may have a different opinion, and someone at the shop may say otherwise, this is just my perception as a California visitor (so you can take it with a grain of salt). Overall, the bikes seem well maintained. No blowouts, no flats, nice to get the fix-it kits, and especially nice to get the clip pedals free of charge. I think they also rent helmets; I didn't partake as I brought all my gear. They do sell Kauai bike maps, which might interest especially mountain bikers: there seemed to be tons of fire roads (not so much single track) to do, and these were fairly detailed. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to someone who was looking to rent bikes, especially if you want more somewhat serious bikes (i.e. road or mountain) vs. just beach cruisers. Those places seem a dime a dozen, although they rent those, too. read more

We rented bikes for about two hours to take a ride up and down the bike path along the beach. The bikes were very reasonable ($10 each for a basic, three-speed bike, which is more than sufficient for the path). The person behind the counter sized us for helmets and adjusted the seats for us, and gave us good suggestions for where to ride and the distance. From the store, it's about 50 feet to the start of the bike path, and then it's a beautiful 5-mile ride along the beach. We had an aggressive wind in our faces going up, which is also the more uphill part of the ride, so we got a good workout on the way up, and the ride back was easy, wind at our backs, downhill, and a lot of fun. Other bikers, walkers, and runners on the path were incredibly friendly and courteous. It was a great way to spend the afternoon. read more

These guys were great on Wednesday when I bought my bike and accessories. Today that all changed. The lock I bought was broken. Instead of just swapping it out, they told me I had to purchase a new lock at 10 percent off. When I looked hesitant, they said since I just bought a bike, I could get 20 percent off. Well...my husband was going to take a second look at a bike he saw, but due to this lack of commitment to customer satisfaction, they will not be getting a second 700 dollar sale from us. Over a 30 dollar faulty lock!? Bad business men. Really not good. They implied the lock must have been dropped. I've had it 3 days. Just opened the packaging this morning. Possibly dropped on your concrete floor before I bought it? Or bad manufacturing to begin with? Basically, they implied I broke it. 740 dollars including a faulty lock. They couldn't just cover that? I'm sure they made that much and more on the sale. I'm all for making a decent profit. We live here. We would have purchased again. It's not like I was looking for a hand out at any time. I just expected a lock to last longer than 3 days! I hope the bike stays together and they stand by their year of free service. Maybe I should get in writing exactly what will be covered in that "service". read more

We were looking at bike rentals and decided on Kauai Cycle as they were the closest. The staff was super friendly and rented us 2 bikes for $10 a piece for 4 hours which was more than enough time to bike the Kapaa trail and back. It was great weather riding out but it started dumping rain on the way back so our bike ride was only 2 hours. We could have stopped and hung out at the beaches along the way or took in the scenery more often. The trail is about 5 miles out and 5 miles back for a total of 10 miles. The bikes could have been in better condition as the bikes from coconuts that we saw along the trail, but they are also more expensive. If you are looking for an inexpensive bike rental with friendly staff, this is the place to go! read more

Absolutely Horrible - STAY AWAY! While I'm not a trained psychiatrist and cannot come up with a clinical diagnosis, Jason the owner of Kauai Cycle seems to be highly emotionally unstable. Here's what happened: my wife and I rented two bikes for a whole day. At about 8 miles from the shop's location my wife had a flat tire in the late afternoon. We were not given any repair kits. We immediately called the shop for help. We were told that this is our problem, but if the bikes are not back before 6pm then we'd be charged extra. Not knowing what to do, I left my wife alone with the bike with the flat tire and I peddled back to the store to return my bike. Again, at the store I was told that the flat tire is my problem. Also, I was pointed out to the fine print in the contract, which does really say that I'm responsible for returning the bikes on time no matter what. After arguing for a while "what I possibly could do at this point?", Jason had the audacity to yell at me and call me a "Troublemaker". For better bikes, cheaper prices, and an owner who is not apparently insane you might go to :) BRIGGS IN LIHUE :). read more

This is a great bike shop. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. I've been riding everyday close to 20 miles and have periodically needed some repair work, they fitted me in several times in spite of how crazy busy they've been since the pandemic. So our bob's stroller had a flat, and since that is our only means of transportation for long distances with the little pea, I started to freak out. Well, no need to fret since of course there was a bike shop near the natural food market (papayas) and yay we had 10 minutes to spare before they closed. The bike techs were super nice, had a spare and found the offending thorn which probably accounted for the replacement tube we put on about a month ago. They also retreaded the lining so that wouldn't cause more flats either. Phew! Crisis averted.. less than a meal at the local taco bar and we are back walking and pushing a stroller up the Na Pali coast! read more

A huge thumbs up for Kauai Cycle because of the quality of the bike, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the very reasonable rental rates. I would not hesitate to rent from them again and plan to do so for any trip to the island I feel like riding. I rented a road bike which turned out to be a Specialized Allez. The bike was in great mechanical condition although it did have a few cosmetic blemishes but nothing really big. They also use heavy duty tires because of all of the road crap and glass on the roads. The bike also came with a flat fix-it kit under the seat and a lock - no extra charge. I was also offered a helmet but since I brought my own I declined. When I called from the mainland I mentioned that I had a neck injury and that I would need the handle bars as upright as possible. They told me that they would try to work with me as best they could to make the bike comfortable. I was worried but brought my own stem extenders and raised stem to the island. The mechanic spent about 15 minutes with the bike and my stems and was able to raise the handle bars enough for me to be comfortable. He also changed out the pedals for my own that I brought. The specific reason for renting the bike was to ride in the Pedal to the Meadow bike race which is up Waimea Canyon. Kauai Cycle was a sponsor of the race and the 2 mechanics were happy to tell me about the ride and were very encouraging. They also invited me to the group ride the following day. read more

I'm an avid road and mountain biker- after 10 days here, my experience is that you should reset our expectations wh Kauai- the MTB trails seem really short and not-connected so the ROI isn't good for little 1-4 mile single tracks and for road biking- very few trails or bike lanes, and bike lanes, trails and even roads randomly end out in the middle of nowhere, leaving you stranded on a highway or middle of a farm where you need to turn around. read more

Avoid! My wife and I rented two bikes for three hours to ride along the coast. Unfortunately we ( nor they)did not fully inspect the bikes and an hour in ,my wife's brake was rubbing against the tire making it difficult to peddle. In addition several wheel spokes were sticking out of the wheel. We turned around and rode back to the shop .We complained to the employee that rented us the bike about the problems and he took it for a quick spin and acknowledged the problems. He went inside and come out a few minutes later saying we were ALL SET!! No offer for another bike,no refund, not even an apology . I guess they get so many renters that they are not concerned about customer satisfaction. My advice is to rent from the other bike shop a block away. read more
