Katrina's Cafe, located on Grass Valley Highway, has set the breakfast standard in the Sierra Nevada foothill city of Auburn, CA for many years, and is a favorite breakfast and lunch restaurant of Auburn locals. Over the years, word has got around about the amazing breakfast and lunch served at Katrina's... so many travelers get off the Interstate and drive the short mile to Katrina's Cafe, to enjoy superior breakfast and lunch cuisine... Thanks to the current COVID-19 crisis, along with mandates by the state, and Placer County, there is no indoor dining, as all dining is enjoyed outside, on the patio, or on the "new" patio, in front of the restaurant, in what used to be the parking lot. No worries about parking, as the lot next door is both ample and spacious. The dining room is quite compact, and appears to be what was once the living room in a former residence. It's separated into two sections, divided by a low partition. The furniture is tables and chairs, as there aren't any booths. Decor is simple, attractive, and very "country" in keeping with the rustic nature of Auburn. The dining room is clean, attractive, and would be a comfortable and cheery place to enjoy a fine meal. Today as I walked in the front door, I was greeted by my super friendly hostess, Shannon. Unfortunately, due to state mandate, all dining is outside on the patio, as the state has ruled indoor dining is too risky, thanks to the virus. As of tomorrow, even outdoor dining will be banned for at least three weeks... On this chilly 42-degree Thursday morning in early December, I felt like celebrating, so I forgot my coffee and ordered a "Bloody Mary." At $6.50, the drink isn't cheap, but it's a custom-made mixed cocktail, and the price is certainly delicious. From the "Eggs" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs." How could I resist such a choice offering? The menu describes this as "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, with homemade gravy," and I describe it as delicious! Side choices include potatoes, fresh fruit or biscuit and gravy. I've never met a potato that I haven't loved, so I ordered potatoes. Curiously, Katrina's menu doesn't offer hash brown potatoes. An orange slice enhances the presentation, and the "Bloody Mary" makes the amazing meal even better. The "star" of my meal was the chicken fried steak, and Katrina's chicken fried steak is as good as it gets. For starters, you get a large piece of meat, that is quite thin - less than a half inch or so - and the slab of steak is fork tender, so a knife is simply window dressing. The meat is seasoned and covered in a seasoned batter, and deep fried to a perfect, golden brown, with just enough "crunch" to remind you how delicious this steak is. The meat is tender, moist and juicy, the batter is "just right" - enough to enhance the taste of the meat, but not in excess - and the batter-to-meat ratio is perfect. Katrina's Cafe knows how to serve a superior chicken fried steak! I noted the steak was in the middle of the plate, covered with gravy, and the two eggs overlapped half the steak, while some of the potatoes were on top of the other half of the meat. Extra gravy covered most of the eggs. You love breakfast gravy? This meal is for all gravy lovers... For sides, you choose between potatoes, biscuit and gravy or fresh fruit. Potatoes were my choice, as I am a connoisseur of potatoes, and Katrina's potatoes aren't ordinary fried potatoes... they're EXCEPTIONAL potatoes! The red potatoes were diced into "chunks," and most chunks had some skin left on, which is something that I love. The chunks were seasoned with seasoned salt, along with parsley flakes, and were griddle-fried to a perfect golden brown on most sides, with a side of white, tender potato on each piece. These fried potatoes are some of the BEST homestyle potatoes that I've ever eaten during my restaurant adventures! They were seasoned perfectly, fried to perfection, and simply melted in my mouth. Come to Katrina's to enjoy the chicken fried steak, but stay for the potatoes! I ordered my two eggs fried over easy, and they arrived as ordered, fried perfectly over easy. The mark of a good chef is how he/she fries eggs, and the chefs at Katrina's Cafe have talent, as my eggs were fried perfectly. I "enhanced" my eggs with some of the Cholula sauce, as I'm a fan of most Mexican hot sauces with my breakfast. The meat, some of the potatoes and most of the eggs were covered with a generous portion of Katrina's homemade gravy, which added a delicious, finishing touch to this wonderful breakfast. The gravy was creamy, smooth, seasoned with the right amount of pepper, and had lots of chunks of sausage. The texture of the gravy was perfect - nice and smooth - and the taste was sensational. Had chicken fried steak and flavor was ok. Took leftovers home. Maybe I'll try something different next time, but it's really close to being too far out of the way for us. Not trying to discourage. I was so excited to try Katrina's today for 2 things: *My friend had been raving about their chocolate pancakes and their brunch offering. It is in her #1 brunch recommendation list in the area. *I was super hungry and my friend was taking me there as a treat. When we got there, there were at least 3 signs by the iron fence to "Wait here to be seated", or something like that where we were standing. There was a white grandma (or mom) with a young lady in front of us, and a couple of white older couple behind us. The first two guests were on their way to their table, when a waitress asked the older couple behind us, if they've been helped - despite seeing me and my friend in line. We are Asians. Despite the older couple politely saying that we were in front of them, the waitress proceeded to ignore us (not acknowledge me and my friend), and appeared to have gone back to her waitressing duties. My friend let out a nervous laugh, and made a small comment that we were in the right spot to be seated. Whatever that was, my friend and I proceeded to ignore it. I mean, my husband is white and I often ride the coat tails of his privilege, so...‍, and also- we got sat just a few minutes later so nothing to complain about. A little background: I met my friend in a FB foodie group where I write detailed unbiased reviews of dining experiences in the Placer County area, especially where it's highly recommended and I dine for the first time, so as much as I wanted to share her excitement for her favorite brunch place - I was already not feeling it. But maybe that was the sign that I was about to get some very bad dining experience... Mind you - I don't go on Yelp to write reviews unless the experience, merch, food or service is very good or very bad. I don't do that 2,3,4 stars BS. Katrina's was a disappointment. The same lady who greeted the old couple turned out to be our waitress. We were seated a few feet from the door where she comes out and passed us by a few times to fill other customers' glass for water, while ignoring mine - which I strategically placed at the edge of our table so I can observe if she will fill. My friend ordered her favorites: The Don and the chocolate pancake. I liked the flavor of the Don, for what little I've had of it and the pancake was decent. I ordered the lunch special: Almond Chicken Salad sandwich. When the waitress served me it, I was a little sad because the presentation already looked unappetizing. But maybe it tasted good, right? So, I had a bite and something in the flavor tasted weird....and the croissant bread crumbled after the first bite. Old bread. I had another bite; I wanted it so bad to taste good, especially because I didn't want to disappoint my friend who drove us from Rocklin to eat at her favorite brunch place. It was nasty. I couldn't hide my distaste, so I politely asked her to try it because maybe - there's something wrong with my taste buds. She said it tasted "different", like "there's something missing". She was being nice. I couldn't bring myself to another bite so I stopped eating. Then, it started to smell. I wanted to bring it up to the waitress' attention but I know my friend will feel embarrassed and I'd kill our time together. So, I kept mum. And then, just right before my friend picked up the check - I had to run to the bathroom. That was round 1. I finished round 5 at our house. At the time I'm writing this, my stomach still churns, especially with the thought of that sandwich, I feel like it was on special because they're trying to get rid of the chicken salad before it turned really bad. Or, we just had a really shitty waitress who didn't care to present, look at or smell the shitty food she was serving. I mean, look at the pics! I'm never going back to Katrina's. I told my friend I'll take her next door to Nancy's next time - where the owner is a Rockstar, their servers and service are nice and attentive, and food is amazing. read more

Still our favorite spot for local brunch. We take visitors and they all love it as well. Every local place we eat at for breakfast or burgers is compared to Katrina's. And we always ask ourselves why we even try it elsewhere. I love their teriyaki mushroom burger with homemade sauce and their potato salad is :::chef's kiss::: I always struggle with deciding on potato salad or fries because their fries are so crispy and delish! But I only eat my potato salad so...it's a nice treat to be able to eat some that I didn't make. Bae always gets chicken fried steak because it's the best in town. We were excited to try this place given the positive reviews and welcoming patio. We were hoping to add it to our rotation. As a party of four, we were seated within 20 min on a Sunday morning. After that, we were basically forgotten. A busser came to take our drink order about 10-15 min after we were seated. We asked if we could order, and we were told no. The server came about 7 minutes later, took our order and then we waited for about 35 minutes as the two parties ahead of us had been seated, served and were leaving. About 5-7 minutes later, two of the four dishes arrived. The hot sandwich had aoili (not listed on the menu). It took another 10 minutes for them to fix the sandwich. The pancakes and fruit came out a few minutes later. The food was ehhhh. We had to go inside to request our check and pay. The server even asked us to take trash from our table. The service was abysmal. It's a shame. I would not recommend that you give them your business. They could have at least taken the sandwich off our bill as an apology. read more

Did not expect the quality of great food we had for lunch during a COVID pandemic, but this was exceptional! We sat outside with plenty of elbow room and hot coffee. WE each ordered around the menu, V ordered the waffle with fresh fruit, I ordered the Reuben sandwich with minestrone with a side of garlic steak fries, Spanky ordered the Lemon Yogurt pancakes. WOW what an assortment of delicious food. The Reuben was the best I have had in decades - beating order a long list of hopefuls. It was loaded with seasoned corned beef overflowing the plate, with sauerkraut and swiss cheese on top of light rye. The homemade minestrone soup was awesome - it brought back my faith in Minestrone the way it should taste, lots of flavor and an ample supply of goodies. The Lemon Yogurt Pancakes were very light and fluffy with hints of lemon thru-out. The Belgian waffle was good, but the fresh strawberries, blackberries and blueberries loaded on top were the best. TLDR: Food is great, but no covid precautions taken and slow service Came here on a Sunday around 11 am and the wait was around 20 mins for a party of 2. Once we got seated, we sat for about 15 mins before getting our beverage order taken. Food didn't take too long to come out after ordering though My friend and I got the tofu scramble and Tuscan scramble. Both were very good dishes, decent portions, and prices were reasonable. This was the saving grace of the whole experience In terms of safety, all of the food service staff wore masks (not all properly), but that was about it. They had indoor and outdoor dining. Tables were not spaced apart more than usual. Practically all customers did not wear masks, including those waiting for a table. Our server wore her mask below her nose the whole time. Non single use condiments were on the tables still Cash or check only. My friend and I did not feel safe at all and requested for an outdoor table farthest away from others. I felt the need to share. The level of service was far below expectations and left me feeling like an undervalued customer, also left me feeling frustrated. Did not receive recommendations of food, menu was not explained not even my daughter asked what came on the burger, the server stated very condescending plain everything comes on the side. Hubby and I split the chicken fried steak breakfast with the fruit and biscuits and gravy option. It's a good thing we decided to split one breakfast and not get our own because we had trouble finishing the plate! The chicken fried steak batter is hands down the best I've ever had, and let me tell you, I love my chicken fried steak and have had many. The side of fruit was very generous - it took over half of the plate and the biscuits and gravy came in a separate small plate. Only word of caution is that if you have a timeline, don't get the chicken fried steak as it's labor intensive and comes out slower than other menu items. Entire experience exceeded my expectations. Had one of their popular menu item the avocado delight omelette and substituted the toast for their lemon yogurt pancake. Not really a fan of lemon but this is one I can say I will have over and over. Hubby had the most popular in their menu which is the tuscan scramble and it was very good too. If you ask anyone in Auburn for a breakfast recommendation they'll most likely recommend Katrina's cafe. Their menu is ginormous, meaning there's something for everyone. Despite it being a busy Saturday morning, we were seated after waiting about 5 minutes. Per our waitress' recommendation, I ordered the tuscan scramble with a side of potatoes. It was the perfect comfort breakfast item. My husband loved his omelette and hashbrowns. Our food came out quickly and we were surprised at the large portion sizes. While the food and serving sizes were good, along with the drinks, the service wasn't all that great. I think after ordering, it took a total of 45 minutes to get our food. The table next to us had their umbrella fly off from their table and hit one of the customers, definitely need a more secure solution for the umbrellas.
