Came to see Dr. Fang for the first time, as I had just moved to the area last year and needed a new dermatologist. Found Dr. Fang's office through my network's provider search, but was a bit hesitant due to some of the negative Yelp reviews. Dr. Fang's office however was very close to where I live. And located right outside El Cerrito Plaza, just past JoAnn's, free parking is readily available in the plaza, and I just had to walk over. As it turned out, my concern was baseless, as Dr Fang was not only extremely kind, but listened and addressed all of my concerns, made recommendations and gave treatment options that I felt comfortable with, and left me feeling much more educated about my body in general. In fact, far more than my previous dermatologist, or any of my prior primary care physicians ever did, combined, regarding the same issues. So ecstatic that I was able to find such a great dermatologist nearby. And one whom I plan to continue seeing for as long as I live here! read more

Unfortunately if I could give a less than zero, I would! This is for the "office manager" and not Dr. Fang. Dr. Fang is a five star doctor. I have been a patient of Dr. Fang's for years. She is a wonderful and knowledgable doctor. She is always helpful and I really appreciate her calm bedside manner. She has even treated my son with patience, care and understanding of his skin issues. When I came in to the office for my appointment, there was a man behind the desk (whom I've never seen before) announcing loudly for all to hear that he is the "office manager" and spoke to the other receptionists and other patients, including elderly patients with a very rude and condescending tone! Then I called the office a month later regarding my insurance and my routine appointment. I had a question regarding treatment and I recognized the same voice that I heard when I came in for my appointment. He unfortunately was the same rude and condescending person and then he became accusatory with me over the phone. He was saying that I was asking him to change my chart, commit fraud and that I would cause my doctors' license to be revoked. AND she wouldn't be able to practice medicine! He said it again even more aggressively than the first time. WHAT?! Who says that?! Umm... I had a question about my treatment and the description of the code claims according to my visit. Including my co-pay there was an expensive $195 add-on to my invoice by the office and I didn't know what it meant. I was told to call the office for clarification by my provider and the billing department of Golden State Dermatology. I didn't think a basic conversation would turn into a hostile one, causing me to feel upset for asking legitimate questions, which is part of his job, being an "office manager." I mentioned I would try and reach out to the doctor, when he became even more defensive. I have never in my life, been spoken to in that manner by a professional doctor's office. I was in tears when I called the billing department for the third time. After almost 2 hours of dealing with this mess, they were really helpful, listened and answered all of my questions. Thank goodness! I'm having serious thoughts of moving on to a new doctor. I don't want to engage with an "office manager" that treats his fellow employees with self-entitlement and disrespecting patients by belittling them publicly or by phone. read more

I would give her no stars if I could. She spent about 2 minutes, if that, looking at my skin, without turning the lights on in the examining room or using a headlamp. She mumbled that everything was fine and left. I was completely dumbfounded. She barely looked at me and made no attempt to connect. I only went to her because my beloved dermatologist retired and I was looking for a new practitioner. I went home and made an appointment with another doctor whom I saw a couple of months later --and who found actinic keratoses that she burned off and some areas to monitor. I am having a very painful issue on my face, it's been getting steadily worse. I called to see if I could get a same day appt since it's Friday and by Monday I may be seriously disabled...they said no unless I get a referral first for my primary care doc (not an insurance issue, I was willing to pay out of pocket). I called, my primary care doc can't do the injection I need. My Primary doc jumped through several hoops to get them a fax referral today (usually takes 5-7 days) I called back to make the appt, they said they need a phone call from my doctor and for the doctor that it's urgent. My eye is mostly swollen shut and I am in pain. No appt for me until they hear that from my doctor. What a nightmare. Reading these other reviews it seems I dodged a bullet. horrible waste of my time today. read more

Please read this before using this office services. Booked an appointment 3 months in advance to see Dr.Fang as they were packed as they claimed. Waited patiently till my appointment and upon arrival I was told that the procedure will not take place at this time and I will have to wait another month for them to set me up with a new appointment. Through all this time I was asking for a price in case paying out of pocket But they refuse to give it to me. The doctor saw me for 2 min only and billed me with 180$!! After waiting another month, arriving to my new appointment waited 15 minutes late to see the doctor and when asking her about the price since the secretaries couldn't give it to me and as they mentioned "only the doctor would be able to define it" -then out of a sudden dr. fang became unfriendly and warned me that this may cause losing my appointment time. It took her 30 minutes to find out the amount and one coming back finally as stated she told me my time is up and she wouldn't be able to pre-perform the operation and I would have to set up a new appointment and wait another month. When asking why I have to wait again she became angry and start yelling at me l, at this point I lost my patience and told her I would not continue with this type of attitude and left. Would give her 0 stars if I could. Told me that the allergies I have weren't real, and then told me she has other more important issues than the acne I was trying to treat last year. Extremely condescending and kept going on about how she's a "highly scientific person" when she refused to listen to anything about my concerns. I was absolutely horrified at how unprofessional she was and in disbelief that she's a doctor with this kind of toxic and rude bedside manner. Dr. Fang is not only a fine and skilled physician who has seen me through many skin issues over the past twenty plus years, but is also a very lovely and charming lady. I see, from some of the reviews, that she's not every ones cup of tea, but she certainly is mine. I'm very grateful for all the wonderful care that I've gotten from Dr. Fang. Dr Fang is wonderful! I am always shocked when the same person or place can have a bunch of YELP 5's and a bunch of 1's. That is not useful information. I suppose the reviews can be useful, but not the AVERAGE of the stars. eight 1's and 8 5's should not be averaged out to 3. Maybe just the reviews would be nice, without the average. I was referred to Dr Fang by my regular doctor because I have had this nasty brown thing on my cheek for years. She looked at it and said that it was absolutely not a malignant anything. Then she said casually, would you like me to remove it? I said SURE. She sprayed some very very cold cryo-something, and bandaged the site. Two weeks later it was just about gone. I have had three Sutter doctors and one dermatologist check this out over the years. Everyone said OK, but nobody ever suggested that it could be taken away. (Hmmmmm. Maybe I should be reviewing Sutter before they completely take over health care in California) AND ........ yes, Dr Fang was very friendly, very nice, and so was the staff. Dr. Fang was my daughter's dermatologist and we are so disappointed with her staff and her service. My daughter had an acne problem which is hard enough in and of itself. Dr. Fang recommended using accutane so we filled out a tremendous amount of paperwork to be eligible to use this drug. After an accutane appointment, if a patient does not pick up their prescription in 7-days s/he cannot get the prescription. Neither I nor my daughter were ever informed of this 7-day window by their office. I was not informed about this window until the pharmacist called me to advise me of it. When I called the office to inquire about this, I had to talk to a few people before getting any solid information about the process. I was asking many questions about the process and one staff person became impatient and rude while I was inquiring about it that I was completely taken aback at how unprofessional she was. The staff person spoke to me in a mean-spirited tone then didn't attempt to help me get the information I needed. This staff person gave the phone to another staff person in the midst of our conversation. She then told me that I had gotten the wrong information from the other staff person. I had no idea that I was talking to two different people in one conversation. My daughter just went in for the 3rd time to get the accutane prescription and Dr. Fang proceeded to tell my daugther "let's not work together anymore. You can just get accutane when you go off to college". Dr. Fang never attempted to call or cancel the client relationship on the phone, instead she waited until my daughter went into her appointment and did so. She then charged me $216.84 for severing the client relationship. I've not heard of any doctor telling a young adult that they won't work with or serve them any longer when the young adult needs their services. I would not recommend Dr. Fang. On top of the hardship my daughter has had with acne, she was also cancelled by this doctor. read more

In my opinion, a quack. Save your own life, go elsewhere. This alleged "doctor" called my malignant melanoma "a minor skin irritation", she said SHE WAS CERTAIN it was not skin cancer, and sent me away, telling me to come back in two months "if it still bothered me." She was condescending about it, like I had wasted her time. In the meantime, the sore wept and bled and scabbed, but I could not get an earlier appt than the two month mark. Then at that appt two months later, she said oooh, looks like skin cancer, but she was CERTAIN it was not the "bad kind" of cancer. Unfortunately for me, the biopsy proved the fool wrong again. The surgery was sloppy and very painful, and she tried to schedule it for immediately before my snorkeling vacation I told her about months before. She made no notes to my file or to the lab that the melanoma had ulcerated. Makes a difference when trying to get further testing. I had to miss an appointment because I was asked the night before to babysit two neighbor toddlers during their murdered mother's funeral. I called Dr. Fang's office as soon as they opened the next morning, explained the situation, and rescheduled the late in the day appt. Dr. Fang charged me $50.00 for that missed appointment, until I reminded her of her misdiagnosis (two of them!), then she sent me a certified letter waiving the fee and asking me not to come back. LOL, like I was ever going back. Bad office set up, parking is awful due to construction, no exam room privacy, exposed in your gown to the waiting room, barely competent staff who are apparently unable to pass on messages, send appropriate testing paperwork, schudule advanced exams, or practice the minimums of civility (and education...). This was a complete waste of my time and effort. I contacted this office because I needed a cyst removed. I have had them removed before by another dermatologist when I lived in a different area. I have no scars from prior removals, and all prior removals were done with one visit in less than thirty minutes. This office set up an appointment with me purely to charge me $85 to tell me they needed to schedule another appointment. Further they indicated they could not remove the cyst without leaving a scar twice as big as the cyst. The other recommendation they made was that I play with the cyst until such time that it becomes infected and evolves into a boil. At which point it could be removed without any scar. They further insisted that the cyst once removed needs to be sent to a lab for testing even though I told them it is nothing but a cyst and simply needs to be removed. This office, in my opinion, demonstrates one of the biggest problems with western medicine. Western medicine is about generating revenue not meeting patient needs. Dr. Fang demonstrated she lacks understanding, she lacks experience and skills that other dermatologists have. She also lacks any concern or respect for people. If you have respect for yourself, your time and your money, you would be best advised to avoid this office. They will show no respect for you, your time or your money. I hope they take a sense of pride in the $85 they stole from me, and the low level of professional skills and knowledge they provided for the $85 they stole from me. After reading other reviews, it makes me realize, I should have gone to Yelp before making an appointment with this doctor. Making an appointment with her took me over a month. While in her office, I was able to ascertain why it is so hard to get an appointment with her. She works alone and disappears a lot. Her next disappearance, as I overheard, encompasses most of the month of August. She obviously has no real concern for people, her business or patients. read more

There was nothing about my three visits with Dr. Fang that led me to believe that she isn't thoroughly qualified...and very good at what she does. But, in my view, there's more to being a doctor than diagnosing and treating illness. And here is where Dr. Fang, in my view, falls short: she comes off as high-handed, condescending and dismissive. Curiously, I see that these very adjectives have been used to describe her by other reviewers on Yelp. I hope that, if Dr. Fang reads these comments, she will recognize them as constructive criticism, take them to heart and then try to see herself as others see her. I went to see Dr Fang because I was referred by my doctor to check out several moles that had changed color and shape. I was called 4 times before the appointment about my billing (double coverage) and to get a written referral from my PMD so that there would be no billing issues. First, Dr Fang was booked 2 months out in advance (time to hire another doctor). I expected that the appointment would be long and difficult, or at least thorough, due to the amount of time spent trying to determine if I would be paying the $15 difference. When I went there, they were closing for lunch, hurried me through the appointment, and then my prescription was supposed to be sent to my pharmacy, and a report to my PMD for follow up. Dr Fang quickly glanced over my body, took less than 2 minutes to look over thousands of moles, maybe 5 minutes for the whole appointment, and decided that there were "freckles" (I knew that) and "dandruff" (everybody in the world has dandruff), and that she would send a prescription for some recurring dry skin issue. The prescription did not ever get sent, and there was never a follow up report sent to my PMD. But, I did receive a billing statement from my insurance. I felt like I was hurried through so that the staff could go to lunch, and that there was no concern for bedside manner nor for follow up, only for billing. I feel that I may have already written a review on this fine doctor already a long while ago. Maybe not but just in case I feel I need to because I have seen a few negative ones, sadly. I just want to say that I had a pimple on the side of my right cheek that refused to heal. I heal good and fast so I saw her. She gives my whole body a once over at least once a year. Anyway, she took a sample and sent it out for biopsy. Came back as cancer. Cannot remember what kind but the kind that you need to get right on. She removed a large piece of my cheek, at least large to me but of course she wanted to get it all. Then with her very fine fingers she sewed up everything which later came out to be very invisible. So the office staff called me today and they said that they could not read the copy of my insurance card that THEY made a copy of! hahahahahaha not my problem you incompetent asses! Thats a dose of karma for ya! Can't read the numbers? Shouldn't you have maybe LOOKED at the copy you made?? No surprise, everything about this place is wrong and the Dr has no personality, no bedside manner and obviously a staff that cannot do the simplest things such as making COPIES!!! What a joke. I am elderly and hard of hearing. I was showing her my keratoses on my head, she said curtly "Hands off! Hands off!" That was her very direct and unprofessional way of telling me to move my hands, so she could see. She tends to bark, is slightly icy and impatient. She has helped my keratoses by providing cryotherapy. But, I can go anywhere and obtain that treatment and not have to feel poorly treated. read more

Dr. Fang misdiagnosed my skin ailment. When I called back 3 weeks later to check why the medication wasn't producing the desired result, I was told that it could take up to 5 weeks? I had to cajole the nurse who returned my call to ask the Dr. to call me herself. At the 5-week mark, I discontinued my medication prescribed by Dr. Fang, on the recommendation of a friend (non-MD), I treated it for another ailment and within 2-days, was already healing. Dr. Fang was curt and dismissive. Her phone staff, when urged, may find an appointment sooner than 3 months(!) away, but not always. And I was already an established patient. I put one star because I could not put "zero" stars. I should have been suspicious when our two, back -to-back, intake, "full body check" appointments were spaced only 15 minutes apart. For this first visit, neither my husband nor I received more than a 2-3 minute scan from Dr. Fang. My husband was not asked to remove his trousers, so more than half his body went uninspected. When we left, she instructed us to "look at each other", meaning, I suppose, to do our own full body checks, and come back in a couple of years or so. Our former dermatologist, who has since retired, used to spend 15 - 20 minutes meticulously going over every square inch of our bodies, including our entire scalp, between toes and fingers, the soles of our feet. We were advised to have annual appointments. The carelessness and inattentiveness of Dr. Fang were shocking. I shudder to think of depending on her "medical expertise" if we were to have any serious dermatological conditions. Her front office reflects her attitudes. It is disorganized and arrogant . I went to see Dr Fang a few years ago and received the same rushed service some others have commented on. As a matter of fact, so rushed that she left the room before she was done answering all my questions. One of her staff discovered me still waiting in the room when they were getting ready to prep it for the next patient. Confused as to why I was still there. After I explained the situation they did get Dr fang to come back and answer my questions. I was prescribed cordran tape which has been working well these last three years. Recently I tried to get my prescription refilled and was told they wouldn't do it since I haven't seen the doctor in three years. I wasn't told to ever come back before, I was told I had an incurable problem that needed to be managed, and it was managing just fine. The last time I got a refill there was NO WARNING I would need to see her again because it had been to long. But I guess you have to get shaken down occasionally to get your medicine. Unlimited refills maybe? Its not like I can sell the stuff on the street like they're oxycontin. This is not what has me so worked up though. I agreed to the shake down!!! I made the appointment in the hopes maybe she really did want to help me and there was something I didn't know. And you know what? Still no tape until I see her!!!...nine days later!!!! My hands would be a bloody bleeding mess in 9 days.....which I told the office. They said they would see if they could get the doctor to write me a interim prescription but they didn't sound optimistic. And you know what? They never called me back. Good things you keep a tight control on that medicated tape Dr. Fang. What was that in the hippocratic oath about doing no harm? We'll I'm harmed my fingers are literally a bloody mess. Painful and cracked in dozens of places. Anyways I canceled my appointment today. I found a new dermatologist. I hope you make plenty of money best wishes!!!!! Your mileage may vary however. I had an emergency skin condition and the lovely folks in Dr. Fang's office (all of the ladies in the front were especially great to deal with!) were amazing about squeezing me in to get a last-minute appointment because the allergic reaction I was experiencing was so bad. This was despite the fact that there is usually a big waiting list to be seen. I was extremely grateful and Dr. Fang immediately diagnosed and remedied the condition with a few prescriptions, which was a huge relief because terrible itching on both arms had been keeping me up nights!!! read more

I was referred to Dr. Fang because I have an itchy back that I've been trying to clear up on my own with hydrocortisone cream that hasn't worked so I wanted to get my back checked out by a dermatologist. I explained my back was itchy and I wanted to get it looked at. The dr looked at my back and said, "I don't see anything ". I told her I could feel the bumps when I tried to put the cream on it. She just said, "there's nothing there. I don't see anything but she spots". I repeated that I could feel the bumps and she just repeated she didn't see anything but she spots. I was wondering why she didn't try to feel for the bumps. It was as though she didn't think to do anything else because she didn't see anything. She gave me some free samples of Aveeno lotion and said it was for dry skin and that was that. I thought it was such a strange visit. I went to a dermatologist for itchy skin and the dr doesn't even try to feel for the rash or bumps and just says I don't see anything. It wasn't my imagination and my back still itches a week later so I'm going to see another dermatologist who won't make me think there's nothing there that's making me itch. As a patient I don't feel my concerns were taken seriously and it was a waste of time. read more

I have seen multiple dermatologists and for many different reasons due to insurance changes, and Dr. Fang has by far been the worst one I have ever seen. As a young adult, all the people in the office talked down to me like I didn't know what I was talking about and Dr. Fang was very rude and brief when I met with her. When I ran into a problem with getting a prescription refilled this week, I called the front office and they denied that they had done anything wrong, and that Dr. Fang had indeed NOT sent a fax denying my refill with a personally written note telling them not to bother her about my prescription anymore. They were incredibly rude to me and interrupted me the entire time I tried to speak. I was told that the only way to get my prescription refilled I would have to make an appt, which is impossible because I am away at school. There is no way I am ever going back to see Dr. Fang or speak to her rude receptionists, the service was rude, dismissive, and condescending to say the least. read more

I am surprise and puzzled by the number of negative reviews of Dr. Fang. Previous to seeing her, I had been treated by two other dermatologists for painful and unsightly pimples on my cheeks and forehead. I tried the 8 to 10 topical treatments that they prescribed and none gave me significant improvement . Dr. Fang examined my face and seemed to know immediately of a proper treatment. She prescribed a generic pill and a generic topical cream. After a week of following her directions the pimples had diminished and in two weeks my skin was clear. I found her manner very pleasant and entirely professional. Her staff was also polite and efficient. The one problem with her is that she is very busy and I had to wait close to two months between calling her office and the time of my appointment, but it is not her fault that she is popular. read more
