I agree with most of the positive and negative reviews about Dr. Dotz. I saw him several times and he is an excellent doctor, always providing great advice and the right prescription when needed. When I needed a prescription, he gave me two, explaining that one might be very expensive and not covered by my insurance but the other one would likely be. If not, the second one would be less expensive. Turned out he was right. However, it was very uncomfortable, at every visit, listening to him yelling at his patients in other exam rooms. I could understand most of what he was saying. Most reviewers mentioned his speaking loudly but he was actually yelling angrily, often about the patients shortcomings. Then when he came into my room, he spent half my exam complaining about that other patient and others. I will not be going to see him again. I'm sure that there are other excellent podiatrists that aren't so confrontational. read more

Regarding the negative reviews due to "poor bedside manner", all I have to say from my years going to Dr. Dotz is that his excellent attention to detail, knowledge of all things related to the skin, promptness when dealing with suspicious skin issues and his follow-ups, when needed, trump, in my opinion, warm and fuzzy bedside manner. Yes, he's direct and efficient in terms of the use of his time, but he has to be, otherwise he'd never get to see all his patients. I left his care only because I moved out of the area (to France). I sure do miss him now! My new dermatologist, who I saw today and who has great reviews from her patients, did what appeared to be a cursory full-body check and wants me to come back only in a year, whereas Dr. Dotz saw me twice a year because he had found a basal cell carcinoma and was concerned about future lesions. read more

I never write any reviews on business. But, on this Christmas Day, I'd like to break my rule to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Dotz, whose esoteric excellence as a dermatologist and his exceptional perception as a person completely changed my 16-year-old daughter's life. My daughter had suffered some common yet stubborn skin issues since she was very young. She visited her insurance dermatologist quite a few times, but only to be informed untreatable. As a makeshift solution, she covered her problematic skin with clothes all year round. Sadly and desperately, it became a taboo at home to talk about her skin. All this has been changed by visiting Dr. Dotz. He carefully diagnosed the symptoms, explained the history and future of treatments, and let my daughter try his new samples in order to create the formula to minimize the side effects. The most unexpectedly touching part was Dr. Dotz spending his valuable time looking for the sustainable prices for us. We saw his humanity besides a superior doctor. Dr. Dotz has been my dermatologist of choice since he began his practice. I had seen other dermatologists but he far out weighed anyone else. He is excellent at diagnosing, is very knowledgeable about all skin problems, works cautiously to make sure I heal well and I find him an interesting and kind man. I have switched my medical insurance to Kaiser but continue with Dr. Dotz, even though it's out of pocket, because he is such a fine and trustworthy doctor. read more

I first visited Dr. Dotz's practice in July 2013. Having grown up a sun worshipper, I thought a year-round tan was a sign of robust health. But later, after retirement, my focus shifted to sun damage and skin cancer. Our relationship began with semi-annual total body scans from Dr. Dotz, during which time he managed my case to prevent actinic keratoses from turning cancerous. In August 2016 he noted a change since my last visit in one such area on my cheek. He carefully removed the offensive tissue and sent it to the lab, where it was classified as a squamous cell carcinoma. Not only had his technique removed the entire malady, his skill with a scalpel left not the slightest trace of a scar on my face. When a troublesome boil erupted on my back while isolated in the midst of the pre-vaccination pandemic, a weekly exchange of emails, photos, and telemedicine calls--coupled with an antibiotic protocol--brought about resolution without complications in less than a month. Over the years he has diagnosed and treated other conditions, including a myxoid cyst. Dr. Dotz explains the medical significance of his diagnoses thoroughly and understandably. But he does not prattle or make small talk during office visits. And his attention is focused on the principal medical issue at hand, rather than straying to a patient's laundry-list of maladies. He asked me into his office and started to complain to me, the patient, that the insurance companies weren't reimbursing him enough and he was having difficulty making the payments on his Mercedes. This is my mother's ongoing dr. I flew into town to take her to a follow up appt. He was running 45 minutes late. He told me that he would be doing a procedure on her. He explained that he would have us leave the room. I countered that my mother might need me as she has dementia. He did not have this important issue in his chart. The One and Only time I saw Dr Dotz, it was because of some ugly growth on my chest. He walked in and starting lecturing me about he expects me to be a good patient and then asked "are you going to be a good patient?" (He never explained what a good patient was!). He sat down and asked what the problem was I lifted up my shirt to show him. He just glanced at it (never examined it) and told me it was a third nipple and there was nothing I could do about it. I then tried to ask him other questions and he dismissed me. I went to the drug store bought some cortisone cream, rubbed it in and THE GROWTH WAS GONE IN A WEEK! As a African American I am used to rude dismissive treatment by white doctors but this one was the worse. read more

Dr. Dotz is exactly what I need from a dermatologist. He is detailed, a perfectionist, proud of his work, and extremely competent. I have seem him for many years, and during that time have had numerous things removed from my skin (thank you Santa Monica beach as a kid!). In all the years he has never left a scar or blemish (beyond normal healing), which is really important given the amount of work he's done on my face. Having moved to Southern California during the pandemic, I still fly North for treatments. In fact, he found a potentially threatening mole that a doctor in Palm Springs overlooked entirely, and followed through on the treatment to be sure it didn't become dangerous. All my friends said I should get this thing on my back checked out, and they made an appointment for me with Dr Dotz. Once he saw what it was (some kind of basal-mela -carci-noma, or did he say it was squeamish), he acted pretty quickly to cut it out of me. He said something like, it's maligned ( I never spoke ill of it, but perhaps my friends did), but whatever, he's the doctor and if he says it has to go, then it has to go. I still don't understand why there are any negative reviews for Dr. Dotz. I have now been coming to Dr. Dotz for over 22 years, I believe. I don't go to doctors for their "bedside manner;" I am looking for their medical expertise. Dr. Dotz and I have a very good rapport. I even live in San Francisco with all my other doctors in the City; however, I'm not willing to give up Dr. Dotz even though an appointment takes me about 3 hours with all the driving, etc. A negative review by someone who didn't schedule an appointment correctly, yet complains, makes no sense to me; or came to the appointment with more problems that were scheduled to be seen by the Doctor. Patients like that are causing problems for not only the Doctor and his staff, but for the patients as well. Dr. Dotz always lays out the different options concerning each issue at every visit. Due to constant skin issues, I am examined every 4 months. Our goal is to get it down to every 6 months. He has the best medical assistant I've ever run into (Maritas). I'm not going to lie, Dr. Dotz is socially awkward but compared to other dermatologists I've met recently, at least he isn't condescending and is actually willing to spend the time talking to his patients when they have questions. The most I interacted with him was for my post-college-acne. He laid out all my options (from cheapest to most expensive...i.e., topical creams to Accutane) and fully answered all my questions. While at times it did seem like he was pushing Accutane on me, once he saw that hormonal contraceptives worked just fine, he seemed happy for me and didn't pressure me to try other methods. When I told him I was moving to San Diego for grad school, he also seemed genuinely happy for me (I've had doctors react a little negatively because they feel they are losing a patient). He actually spent time talking to me about his favorite places in SD--it was actually the first 'normal' conversation we had. Maybe he just needs to NOT be discussing skin in order to be less awkward ;) In terms of laser procedures, I definitely recommend him. When I was in high school, he got rid of a large red blemish on my skin (popped capillary? I don't remember...but it was large and in charge). No scars, no pain. My father has also had a large facial mole removed by him several years ago and has never had any problems since. read more

After 2 years and reading through other reviews (both + and -) I felt it was time to make a real-time update of my actual experiences with Dr. Dotz & his clinic. He really is quite excellent in the way he has been treating me and my various skin-specific issues since becoming his patient. I find him to be an excellent listener and he always seems to have time for my sometimes stupid questions; never rushing me out of his office but rather willing to spend the necessary time to address my concerns. He always gives me "my options" when dealing with a condition - whether "wait & see", immediate biopsy, or referral to another surgeon, or the optimum solution to nail something ASAP. I am a bit vein when it comes to scarring and he has always suggested the right solution to make sure I am happy with the outcome. His staff is really very efficient and wonderful to work with. I've had no problems getting appts. that fit MY schedule (as long as I can make them 2 weeks in advance) I continue to highly recommend Dr. Dotz's clinic if you're in need of a regular Dermatologist. Dr. Warren Dotz has got to be one of the best dermatologists in the Bay Area. I was first referred to him through my old health plan. I had seen other skin doctors in the past, but none of them are as capable or as knowledgeable as he is. He has removed several growths from my face and neck and you can't even see a mark! While many practitioners have made me feel as if I were wasting their time, Dr. Dotz listens to my concerns and has worked with me through all of my skin problems. He runs his practice in an organized and professional manner yet he and his staff are respectful and friendly. Although my current health plan prevents me from being referred to "outside" dermatologists, I know that I will continue to see Dr. Dotz on my own dime. He is THAT good. read more

OK, So I had the scary thing on my face, and people were telling me "well you better go get a dermatologist to take a look at that!"

Dr. Dotz does what is important - he carefully checks to ensure skin health and takes the steps needed to correct or remove skin problems. He does a great job. Over the two decades my family and I have known him he has proved to be an excellent diagnostician and an effective treater. His office staff is attentive and helpful. I add one observation about the complaint I read in the negative review - that Dr. Dotz structures his treatments to deal with particular issues per visit. My experience with Dr. Dotz is that he tries to be efficient with his time and gives appointments for different kinds of care to allow sufficient time for each particular care. So if you need something removed, he schedules you on a day for removal procedures - which take more time. This keeps his office running on time so patients are not kept waiting because the doctor gets continually backed up. (You get the drift - he keeps a predictable schedule.) Those patients who want an overall exam then to be coupled unexpectedly with a removal surgery plus an added focused exploration of care for a particular problem may not understand his system. He gives you appointments based upon the time for the procedure needed. It may seem inconvenient for a patient wanting to stretch an appointment for multiple things but it works well for the entire patient population to have a doctor keeping all the patents on time and not having 10 minute appointments unexpectedly stretch into 40 minute appointments, causing backups throughout the day. Isn't that what we say we want - a doctor who keeps appointments on time so we are not spending hours waiting? That is what Dr. Dotz avoids by keeping a reasonable schedule and that plus great care is what makes him a superb doctor. read more

I went in for a body mole check up but had a question about another skin issue. I waited for 45 minutes and then when I finally saw him and dared ask the other question he gave me a long drawn out lecture about how I couldnt ask a question about other things b/c insurance wouldnt pay for me to ask about more than one issue and how this woman had come in earlier that morning & made them late b/c she had so many skin issues, etc. etc. I couldnt believe it. I couldnt wait to get out of there. So I got dressed & went out to the front desk and there he was & he started talking to me about the woman from earlier in the morning once again & how I was trying to do what she was doing & maybe she should find a dr. closer to her house...He creeped me out. The body check was not detailed. He was dismissive and has a terrible bed side manner & I wouldnt go back. read more

This guy is not your warm & fuzzy Dermo, however, he does know his stuff, and as someone who had a warm & fuzzy Dermo that did not know his stuff, this is uber importantane. He circles questionable areas on a sheet of paper that contain an anatomical drawing of a generic body. I appreciate this as it would be impossible for a Dermo to recall the size and/or color of a specific mole, etc, 6 months later and with hundreds of patients. He also takes photos in certain cases. I have waited anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes between the outer waiting room and the interior. While my time is just as important as any Doctors, I do realize that issues may come up while speaking with a patient, and in truth, I would want the same consideration. Dotz found, and identified, my first basal cells. Bottom line, I trust his expertise. read more

2 stars for correct diagnosis, polite office staff, convenient location, and quickly fitting me into the schedule (my doctor called him directly, old associates). However, his mannerisms, inappropriate comments (they'd told me to come in ONE HOUR prior to my appt, failing to mention the ONE HOUR was for filling in paper work, and when I'd asked if they were running late, I got a LECTURE! Gah!) and general "talking down to" were extremely frustrating, especially considering that I'm also a healthcare professional, and have a generally good basis of related knowledge. If you are looking for an excellent dermatologist, you will not be disappointed with Dr. Dotz.  I have been a patient of Dr. Dotz for over 25 years. He has top notch academic credentials, lectures at UC School of Medicine, and has over 30 years of experience.  He has literally saved my life by recognizing melanoma that could have been easily missed.  Dr. Dotz is professional and thorough, and I have confidence in his ability to diagnose and treat my skin conditions.  Reading some reviews, I realize that some people do not appreciate the limitations placed on physicians and how they are compensated.  If you go in for a skin tag removal, you should not expect to be diagnosed and treated for "oh, by the way, I have this flaky toe fungus."  Obviously, separate issues would ordinarily require a separate appointment.  The most important factors in selecting a doctor should be his credentials, experience and professionalism.  Dr. Dotz, who has been recognized as a Bay Area "Top Doctor" is a good choice. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Dotz for well over 20 years and have repeatedly been kept alive by his thorough and clever system for very proactively finding threatening lesions/moles early. He has structured his service for high overall efficiency and therefore low cost coupled with unusually thorough and insightful dermatological care. It's true that one aspect of this system is that he prefers to only deal with one issue per visit, which is less than optimal for patient convenience, but it's a small problem in the context of needing great dermatological surveillance, and we're lucky to have his determined perfectionism in keeping his patients healthy. His preference for using sets of a few dozen photographs as references for mole check exams is a major aspect of his system of monitoring for dangerous ones, which most dermatologists apparently don't care enough to implement. It's a modest amount of work to yield superior defense which helps greatly to detect very small changes, where change is clue #1 for finding cancers. Do yourself a favor and prefer his care. And while you're at it, realize that a changed mole that's only 3mm across and acting up can kill you if you ignore it! It's worth getting an expert check before it's too late. Melanomas vary a great deal in their appearance and are shockingly dangerous when undiscovered! read more

Nice guy and very knowledgeable about his field. I liked him a lot. He's maybe not for everyone; he's an expert and basically likes to do things his way. So if there's a patient with his own ideas who maybe wants to do this but not that, I suspect Dr. Dotz would just as soon not work with him. I think this is legitimate; people should find doctors whom they trust. My only complaint is that, like others have written, he seems to really focus on one thing at a time. I went mostly to have some moles checked, but there were a few other things I wanted to discuss. However, only the moles got looked at, and the rest will have to wait for another appointment unfortunately. read more

My husband and I have both been to Dr. Dotz. We were looking for a true dermatologist, not someone who wants to shoot Botox all day. I found him to be pleasant and that he takes his time with each patient. You do have to be an assertive patient to be heard sometimes. My complaint is that Dr. Dotz requires two office visits for things that should take one visit. For instance, if you want a skin tag or mole removed, he requires one visit for a consult, and another visit for the procedure. Totally unnecessary. I've never had another derm require two visits for this. Additionally, he will only see you for one "issue" per visit. If you ask a question about something unrelated to the reason for your appointment, he will tell you to schedule another appointment. That's twice the hassle (taking time off from work, etc) and twice the cost (co-pays and office visit charges to insurance). So while I have no complaints about him as a physician and quality of care, I don't appreciate being milked for appointments. read more

He is the worse doctor I've never seen in the USA. I had pimples on my face and it was horrible during that time. I made an appointment almost 5 months later. I'm not sure if his place is really popular or something else. When I visited him the first time, I was waiting for him almost one hour. I parked in the garage which was really expensive. I forgot the exactly garage cost, maybe $5 per hour. There is really difficult to find a parking if you didn't park in.the garage. He gave me a bad impression at the first sight, he said hello to me with a wired tone. His sound is always very loud that I could always heard he talk to other patients next door. He talked to me like a teacher criticize his elementary student, what I should do or shouldn't do, how some crazy patient didn't listen to him... From his talking, I can feel he satisfied himself for no reason and he felt he is better than anyone from his attitude and tone. After first time visit, he gave me two samples and will see me 4 weeks later bcz he wants to make sure if the sample does work for me. I came back 6 weeks later due to I don't have timeh in 4 weeks. He blamed me doesn't come back for 4 weeks, which I didn't listen to him. He was not happy with me not listen to him. When he knew I still have half sample left, he felt he gives me more samples, so he only gave me one sample instead of two and will see me 4 weeks later again. I asked him why should I still have to come back, it is just pimple. He said patient will always not understand what their doctor did. He wants his patient feel better with skin problem, but many patients don't understand him. Keep checking on every patient is his job, he is an responsibility doctor. I visited him again 4 weeks later for the 3rd time, thank goodness, he gave me prescription finally. My insurance is blue shield. Due to my insurance doesn't cover the prescription which is exactly the same as sample, I bought a cheaper one and he even doesn't give me several samples more. Everything is about him, but not his patient. I paid copay for $50 every time, plus parking fee which is a lot. He told me he doesn't like to take blue shield, he introduced several different kind of insurance that he liked and he hope I can change my insurance. He also gave me insurance guy's name card and tons of useless things which are not related to my pimple. I listened to his business for more than half a hour and my pimples was only took him less than 5 minutes. Of course, I should pay for the parking, but not him. He is too business and wanna make money on his patient for every small chance. After he gave me the prescription, he will see me 4 months later. WHAT THE FUCKING HELL? I visited him 3 times for 3 month, my pimple totally disappear, why should I still have to fucking visit him again and again, month by month and year by year. He is such an evil doctor, he only cares about his benefit, but not his patient feeling. He didn't care about I'm happy with him or not, just complain about how patient didn't listen to him, didn't appreciate him. Why should we listen to him if he doesn't care about his patient? I totally understand why nobody wants to listen to him. He is such a jerk, take advantage from his patient, try to make more and more money. Don't come to here, you will pay for more than you want and never stop if you listen to this idiot doctor, unless you want to make friend with him and wanna see him in your entire life. He referred me to Dr. Chow who saw me _very_ quickly and took a divot out of my arm (no kidding around w/melanoma). Came back saying they had gotten it all. He was on time, professional, knowledgeable and his staff was organized, courteous and respectful. I went in for an overall skin assessment and to have my vitiligo looked at. I was impressed with Dr. Dotz professional, direct and thorough examination. Even though I wasn't interested in treatments for my vitiligo, Dr. Dotz let me know that should I change my mind, he would gladly schedule time to walk me through my options. Perfect. Doctor Dotz is one of the best doctors I've been a patient of, and I've had a few doctors. Dotz's cool demeanor may strike some at first as uncaring, but my experience is quite the contrary: he has been friendly and very concerned with my comfort and understanding. I have a fair bit of white coat anxiety and Doctor Dotz has been willing to spend extra time with me to make sure I'm comfortable and informed. He once called me up a few days after an appointment to confirm for me that he had been able to get in contact with another doctor to get some information, just so that I wouldn't be left wondering. I've never felt rushed with the doctor and have always had pleasant, efficient interactions with his staff. During appointments he is quite thorough and takes time to review and discuss his notes. I strongly feel that my overall health is foremost in Doctor Dotz's mind whenever I come in for an appointment. I've never had trouble getting an appointment, though my visits are usually booked a while in advance. He does seem to have a full schedule, but I would bet accommodation would be made if I ever really needed to rearrange things. And, besides, you know with a name like Dotz, you've got to have him as your dermatologist. =') read more

I called one day to schedule a follow-up appointment and made the mistake of saying I also wanted to ask him about something else while I was there. I was told I had to make two appointments. I believe Dotz to be thorough and capable, have used him for years and will continue to do so.. As reported, he is quirky and a bit awkward but, in his way, a warm guy who is on top of it. He believes he is good at what he does. That is fine with me. He has ground rules that need to be reviewed to make the experience understandable. So what. The guy is trying to manage a health care business. Not an easy thing to do. Obtaining health care is a mine field. Health care is expensive. Dotz's explanations can frustrating (or a chuckle depending on your state of mind) but in the midst of it all is the information I need.. Dotz is a good doc. He takes good care of his patients. Have seen Dr. Dotz for almost 20 years. He is so knowlegeable, and you can tell that he attends the conferences and reads; he has kept up with his field so thoroughly. He is personally punctual, yet no one complains if I am late. And he also is so ethical. I have never met a more ethical, and yet kind man in his profession in all of my life, and I am older. Horrible! Let's start from the fact that they have appointments only five months ahead. This is a dermatologist that should see patients while symptoms exist and without letting patients wait for at least five months. read more
