Overpriced, overrated, and pretentious. Well, I can be pretentious too. I grew up in the potato chip capital of the world and region of the best breads, cheese, cheesesteaks, scrapple, delis, and Thomas' English Muffins, this establishment falls far short. Fun fact about Thomas' - their nooks and crannies are a trade secret that only two people know about. Not sure how other muffins believe they can replicate it. Let's start with the completely offensive sweet potato in the breakfast burrito. The dead burrito ladies of California taquerias are rolling over in their graves. Their chicken salad sucks. Cubed not shredded, plus who puts tarragon in salads?! And they clearly haven't heard of Hellmans or Kraft mayo. The chip selection has no Martins, Goods, Charles Chips, or Zerbes chips. No Cooper Sharp either. Fail. I can't get a plastic water bottle that I can compress easily to stow. And they clearly haven't been to Jersey or Philadelphia because they have no clue about bread or baked goods. Even mainstream Amorosos would be better than the trash here. Maybe if you want to spend 30% extra on sunscreen, this place is for you. read more

We went into this store because it had a sign outside that said "Pies." "Pies" sounded good. We love Pie. The hubby waited in the car and I ran in to get some pie. When I arrived there were 3 pies. A blueberry, a strawberry rhubarb and a small 3 berry. I opted for the 3 berry which was practically a personal pie. This tiny pie cost $12. Seriously, $12. For a tiny pie. That is super expensive even by Manhattan standards. The bigger pies were in the neighborhood of $20 +. We ate the pie (in like 10 seconds) and it was very good but it left my family wanting more. Truth be told, do I think it was worth $12, no. Would I go back? Probably not. The service was very good and the store looked somewhat well stocked. read more

I'll start with the good. LOVE the selection of everything- the beach accessories and apparel are super cute, I love the selection of beers, wine, artisan cheeses, etc. The food isn't bad either. The ambiance is totally adorable and the outdoor seating with Adirondack chairs is a nice touch. This should be a 5 star place, end the conversation there. BUT, the service is so completely terrible, I mean truly terrible, that I have to subtract 3 stars. This should be fixable! Came here 4 different mornings in a week because it's close to the house, they have iced coffee, and decent breakfast, not to mention free WiFi. But each time I had to factor in no fewer than 30 minutes to get said coffee and bagel. It's a busy place but given the number of employees behind the counter doing literally nothing, the speed at which things happen in this establishment is fascinating. The cherry on top of the sundae was when after standing in line for breakfast for 15 minutes, it is 11:01am at the counter and apparently they will not serve breakfast after 11am. So utterly absurd. I'll probably be back next year because of everything mentioned at the beginning of this review but I hope the owners see this and are proactive at improving the service. read more

This place is a piece of heaven!!! The owners and help are beyond nice and the food and pastries are fresh and delicious. They have one of the best cheeseburgers on the Island. As I am sitting here having my coffee on this beautiful day, I realized that people have really been going off about the Katama General Store on Yelp. I decide I need to refute that, given I come here quite often during the year and have never had a single issue. Even just now, I went in and every single person in the store was so kind and helpful. I asked for beer recommendations and were greeted with multiple suggestions, and completely willingness to oblige my questions. The prices are Martha's Vineyard small store prices; they have to be able to make a ROI, so remember that. This isn't a store in the middle of Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs (both ferry stops that clearly usher in business), nor is it in the middle of downtown Edgartown. It's a small general store that mostly caters to locals and visitors renting houses, or the folks riding their bikes by to the beach. Still, it's a business. A very beautiful, well ran one with great people working here. I love this place and will continue to be a return customer that brings every person I drag to the island with me here. read more

One of the several anachronistic little general stores that have managed to survive on the island, Katama General Store has change quite a bit over the years. It's still small and kind of dumpy looking from the outside but over the years has acquired more of a gourmet flavor to it. They still have great coffee and freshly baked pies, cookies, breads and scones and still offer locally grown fresh produce but now offer more of a selection of touristy gifts. They will also prepare meals for the busy tourist on the go. Not necessary a bad thing but the store is no longer as quaint and rustic as it once was. It's not all junk food, the store has great sandwiches and salads and a nice variety of juice and healthy drinks. It's a great place to stop on the way down or back from south beach since it is the only place serving food or even water between Edgartown and the beach. You can sit outside and enjoy a sandwich, some fresh produce or more importantly something to drink while you watch the world go by. I usually am dry as the sand by the time I return from hiking along the south beaches and this place is always a welcome sight. When I feel like I'm about to expire of thirst, it appears like an oasis in the desert. Sure, it's not cheap but then nothing on the Vineyard is. Even though the store has unfortunately changed a bit and now caters more to the tourist population it still manges to retain some of the old-fashioned, personality of the general stores of the years gone by. Always an enjoyable place to stop and eat, sit, talk and just enjoy the island. read more

I give this place a 3.5 stars but would have given it a 5 but for the reason I came here atleast twice a week for the breakfast sandwich Came back again this year for the first time the price jumped up to over $8. I might as well go to a sit down diner. I would def go back if they drop the sandwiches back down to $5 again. read more

I am still thinking about the lobster roll form this place, honestly. Best one I had on the island and it was amazing. Otherwise I will remember this place for its $13/lb peaches (no joke, and I'm embarrassed to say I must have bought 10 during our trip because they were amazing) and dessicated roast chicken for $25 (shocking). I had a good overpriced California roll there as well. No fresh bread offerings which was surprising. Oh, and did I mention the $8 artisanal popsicles? They are also sold at roughly the same price at the morning glory farms and Chilmark general store. Not worth the price. I guess I would say just be selective about what you buy here. Unexpectedly, simply the best lobster rolls on the island. I know, this is quite unexpected, given all of the fancy restaurants in the various towns. However, if you have a hankering for a lobster roll, this is a place you have to get to. Only serving lobster rolls between 11 AM and 2 PM. read more

Stopped here for lunch thinking it was a restaurant. Stayed because we were tired and hungry after biking on Chappaquiddick all day. This was my first lobster roll. It was amazing. I do not like mayo and if there was any mayo it was minimal. Toasted brioche roll, lettuce, perfection. My daughter had the grain bowl and loved it, pulled pork was good and even the pre made sandwiches were excellent. $75 for lunch for 5 was pricey but not shocking for MV. Great shop to stop for snacks, lunch, beer and wine. Staff could have been a little friendlier but I'm getting that vibe all over the island. read more

The food and selection is good but almost embarrassingly over priced. I suppose they think they have you "cornered" given the location, which is the only place to buy food and such on the way to the beach. The real reason for the 2 stars is how slow and distracted the help there is. We waited 25 min for a breakfast sandwich, and then they forgot our bagel, which they had charged us for. The best pizzas on the island, bar none. High quality local ingredients pulled together in amazing recipes. Every aspect of the pizza tastes good. Might be my favorite pizza in all of MA. Pizza is only offered on certain nights and only for dinner, but when they do offer it, it's a must have. You won't be disappointed. read more

Katama General is a seasonal store now owned by Lobster Catering. At one time it was a proper beach variety store that marketed itself as "The last stop before South Shore." A place where you could get a beach read, cold drink, and extra sunscreen. The catering company has turned things up a few notches and now you come to KGS for their delicious scones! Blueberry, chocolate, cranberry orange, and (my favorite) cheddar chive - baked fresh in store and come out piping hot! Cycle over and enjoy scones and coffee in their garden style seating surrounded by Black-Eyed Susans and Morning Glories... a lovely setting! They also offer breakfast sandwiches and an array of other baked goods! You can still get your beach sundries here, but expect island pace service and premium prices! read more

Great Labor Day weekend stop (and I am sure any other day of the week). Great portions in the portion controlled refrigerator for salads and such. The store is one level, rustic, packed with everything you ca want for the beach trip ad for picnicking. Staff very attentive and friendly. I must have rode my bike and driven by this store a million times and did not stop in until this past Memorial day weekend. I really missed out of some good sandwiches here. I walked into the small store and a friendly young woman greeted me and asked if I would like some help. I ordered a simple sandwich from their list, grabbed a ice cold drink and some chips. The sandwich was fresh, tasty and was really not that expensive considering they are the only store in the Katama area. I will be stopping there again for my food when it's time to hangout at South beach. Do not wait as long as I did to stop by the Katama General store. It's great. read more

This was such a bad experience. Food was overpriced and they wouldn't make a plain turkey sandwich without mayo. They would not customize anything. The sandwiches we did get were drenched in mayo and basically inedible. Such a expensive mistake. The tortellini we bought were drowning in oil. Update for 8/2017: The remodeling has made a good thing even better. The morning pastries are still just about perfect. The scones are great, too. Try the maple pecan croissant - it could win awards. The coffee is also among the best on the island. Parking is vastly improved (more of it and way safer than the old way of backing up into traffic), and the outdoor seating is generous and comfortable. If you want better value on the everyday groceries, drive the extra mile to Stop and Shop. For continental breakfast closer to the beach, though, Katama General Store is tough to beat. read more

This place is such a gem. I LOVED visiting the Katama general store every day during my past week on the Vineyard. Insanely delicious zucchini bread which is fresh baked every day. Delicious coffee. Super fresh corn on the cob, heirloom tomatoes, and other produce. Our whole family loved the smoked seafood spread and we went back daily for another fix. This place is definitely not the cheapest place - but nor is the Vineyard, so I deal with it. A cute general store. Even if it is not the same as it was years ago, more power to them. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Thought that the renovation would be sure to offer more variety or at least a larger selection but it seems more limited. Also, unlike the chilmark general store that offers sandwiches that are made to order along with pizza and many other options, the huge kitchen remains empty and devoid of action as you scout the refrigerator section for ready made options that are mediocre at best! The chicken curry salad is good though it could stand to have more curry and less mayo. The place itself is pleasantly designed and nice to sit around and watch bikers and cars pass by, but.... the rockers remain conspicuously empty as people seek better fare at other MV eateries. read more

Over Labor Day weekend, we stayed in a home close to this store and loved it. They have a deli section and a market section as well as lovely outdoor seating. My husband enjoyed the breakfast sandwiches. The coffee drinks and pastries were homemade and yummy. We also picked up drinks and snacks to take to the beach nearby, which was convenient. There is a garden in the back and they are planning to expand. It's a great neighborhood store and on the way to South Beach. read more

Came off South Beach from fishing this past week and ordered their $7 breakfast sandwich, it consisted of an English muffin, one egg, or possibly egg disk, a previously cooked piece of bacon and a slice of cheddar cheese. The coffee isn't bad but the sandwich was so skimpy I literally had to go to morning glory farm to get a muffin after that. Basically this place just isn't trying. If they charged $9.50 for a better breakfast sandwich they would get my return business but needless to say I won't be going back there anytime soon. Just for comparison, there is a place on Plum Island that makes something called the "lighthouse sandwich" which is a grilled Portuguese sweetbread muffin, egg, cheese, bacon , avocado and a slice of tomato, now that's trying! read more
