This was one of the best experiences I've ever had. My upper back was killing me so I decided to visit this place and have a full body massage. The guy at the front desk was very welcoming and kind and he guided me to my room right away. The therapist greeted me as well with a big smile and asked me which areas should she give more attention. After I explained her how I was feeling I just told her that I need a deep tissue massage. She was incredible! She was concentrated professional and aware about the areas I pointed out to her. I stayed in that room for one hour and I came out a different person. More relaxed and calm. Kata spa is a really great place to get a massage. I requested one on the same day and they were able to accommodate me. I really need a neck massage because I had a bad cramp in my neck. The lady did wonders and really helped. It's on the second floor of a walk up just fyi but the staff there are professional, and it's clean. The place is quiet and warmer than I'm used to. Which is great, they use hot stone and oil along with can walk on your back and give you a nice stretch! Definitely recommend :) read more

This review is solely for the owner, a man with glasses, who was extremely rude. My husband and I get massages regularly and have never experienced such poor customer service. We were about 18 minutes late due to a personal issue and returned a call within 14 minutes. When we arrived, the owner opened the door and immediately yelled at us without letting us explain. Instead of offering a shortened session or rescheduling, he told us never to book again, claiming they're a "small establishment." Despite multiple apologies from my husband, he remained rude and dismissive. I'm glad we didn't give this place our money--do yourself a favor and avoid it. Terrible experience!! read more

I have mixed emotions about Kata Spa. When I first started going there I absolutely loved it. Loved it so much that I bought a package deal and would go about every other month or so... The last massage I had in that package deal was when they left kind of a sour taste in my mouth. (I did go back two more times after that bad experience, because I liked this place so much) I'll touch on that experience now. It was in August (if my memory serves me correctly) the year before the pandemic hit. I was wearing a button down shirt open with a tank top underneath & some Jean shorts. I thought I was looking nice. I am heavily tattooed. Full chest & two full sleeves. After I got my massage the lady at the desk gave me a water to drink (which seems like they stopped doing now) and she tells me something along the lines of Oh I'm glad you got your massage. No one wanted to massage you. I was confused I was like what?! Why? She walked me to the hallway door, because I was kind of loud. She said well you look kinda of scary, you know... with all those tattoos. But I'm not scared. I like it. Now I am bad when it comes to stuff like this. Was that just an awkward way of her paying me a compliment or where the ladies that work their actual scared of me because I have a lot of ink? I'll never know. (She wasn't at the desk the next two times I came. It was a man) Anyways. I've never had a bad massage there. Since going back I see the prices have gone up slightly. If I could give negative stars, I would. The massage therapists at Kata Spa are really good, and the place itself is excellent. However, I have l experienced significant issues with the man at the front desk, who may be the owner. His behavior has been extremely unpleasant and could be described as either racist, rude, or highly arrogant. For a couple of months, he mysteriously claimed that everything was booked out and unavailable for us. The phone was also mysteriously out of service just for us. He also refused to book my husband for a massage because he did not approve of the tip amount given last time. He told me that on the phone specifically. Another time, when I tried to reschedule an appointment, he told me to never call back again. Others here have also experienced the same treatment. Kata Spa used to be a better place, but it is no longer the case unfortunately. First, it's so hard to get an appointment. They never pick up a call or reply to messages. The only way to secure a spot is to walk to the spa physically and ask their availabilities. There used to be a nice female receptionist who handled all the service related matters, but she has left the spa, and the guy who claims he is the owner of the business, is so disorganized and doesn't care about customers at all. He's a rude, emotionally unstable, and hot headed person who wears glasses. Their masseuse quality also went down fall. The service is not good at all. They don't use a timer to keep the duration of massage either and always do less than what you booked for. I don't recommend this place at all anymore. read more

Top quality and for reasonable prices. Outside of Chinatown, it's been hard to find a place that's clean, professional with great massages, at good rates. I've been to top hotels where it feels like you're being massaged by a noodle, and to tiny spots where it feels like you've wrestled a bear. Kata has been a perfect in-between - great pressure, a variety of massage options, and overall, you feel like you've gotten your money's worth. I've been back so often that i signed up for the packaged deal which sets it pretty competitively against those Chinatown stops. Recently, I started feeling lightheaded all of a sudden during the massage and the masseuse and owner promptly stopped and helped me until I was feeling better. I usually do my research and request a specific therapist even as a first timer but I read other reviews where this establishment didn't allow such requests. So I reached out by text. The rep responded in a very condescending tone and clearly was not interested in being helpful (see the pic). It puts me off from ever giving them business. I have (unexpectedly) been coming to Kata Spa weekly for the last month. I say unexpectedly because I've never gotten weekly massages before. But thanks to a combination of intense work stress and finding a magical masseuse to relieve that stress, Kata has my business. I regularly see Helen. I don't know what magic she performs, but almost every time I see her, I leave feeling incredibly relaxed, relieved, lighter, and sleepy. She really knows how to find all my body's trigger points, and I am impressed by how she listens to my body. I feel like that's the sign of a good masseuse. Listening and responding to the client's body. She somehow knows where to target and for how long. She pushes my trigger points just far enough where it's deep but not dangerous. (Trust me, I've been one masseuse who literally left me severely bruised and damaged). I go in as a tight ball of work stress, and I leave feeling like a person again. The prices are also great. I've never had issues booking with them. They've always communicated professionally with me. When I book, I ask them what female masseuses they have. And I've been able to choose Helen if she's there. I'm open to trying their other masseuse as well. They only take same-day appointments which has its pros and cons, but that kind of system actually works out well for me because my schedule can be unpredictable. There are a few areas where they lose some points for me. I don't like their music. I prefer more ambient music during a massage, like yoga music. But theirs has a melody and a light beat. I don't know how to describe it. It's soft music, but regardless, I find it unrelaxing. I sometimes have to ask them to turn the music quieter in my room. Thankfully, they are happy to accommodate that. There are some things that I normally like in my massage that are missing or I prefer a different method. Kata Spa are happy to accommodate requests. So I'll test the waters on if I like the massages more if I customize them. If not, I'll just stick to Helen's status quo. Some people may find the thin walls distracting, but I don't mind. It's generally very quiet, and if people do talk it's for a very short period. Overall, my experiences at Kata have been very good. I'm very sorry to leave this review, but I have to. I would never return to this place because of the owner. I had been coming to Kata from before I was pregnant to get some relief from a shoulder injury that I sustained over a decade ago. Once I became pregnant, I mentioned that to my practitioner and we did a prenatal massage with me being on my side. Unfortunately, the tables provided did not have enough cushioning to support both of my shoulders - (the one with the injury and the one that is totally fine). So when I turned to either side, I could feel the pressure sustained on either side. I took note of that and said that I would mention that to them, the next time I come. And all I would need is extra cushions/towels. In asking them for extra cushions the next time around, the owner proceeded to say that they have utilized that side-lying technique with other prenatal clients with no issues. I told him that every client is different and that I would need extra cushioning. I didn't understand why extra towels/cushioning was such a difficult thing for them to agree to, but instead of accommodating, he continued to troubleshoot my health and said that I would need 'clearance from my doctor' in order to come back because it sounded like I had a 'more serious issue'. I reaffirmed that even my shoulder that has NO issues sustained pressure during that session because of the tables and how hard they were from that particular side position. ALL I needed were extra towels or cushioning. I even suggested bringing my own as I live nearby. They said they felt it was too much of a risk and suggested another spa - Earth and Sky - around the corner. As a pregnant person, who my doctor has *recommended* for me to get weekly massages, I've never felt so disregarded. As a woman, I feel like what's most unfortunate is that we are challenged so often when it comes to what we ask for, in regards to our health. We are rarely listened to and advocated for. This was the case with Kata. I look forward to never returning and going to a place that will listen to a client (particularly, a pregnant woman) on what she knows she needs for her own health/body. And not try to assume to overtake her own knowledge on HER health and then deny her services because of it. There are too many massage places out there to undergo this kind of treatment. If you are a female and/or pregnant, please try another place like they suggested, since they do not feel equipped to deal with simple requests should you have them in regards to your pregnancy. read more

I have severe rheumatoid arthritis. The masseuses here can always tell exactly where I need work, and are sure to check in just enough throughout the appointment to make any necessary adjustments to pressure. I have been hesitant to get a massage during COVID-19 for obvious reasons, but their studio, which is always quite sanitary, had all of the necessary precautions in place -- temperature checks, sanitizer, masks, and disposable table coverings -- to make it feel safe for all parties. I recommend them highly, and hope that anyone else getting services at this time remembers to tip them very generously. read more

Positive experience here! Receptionist was kind as well as Susan my massage therapist. I received the 60min Swedish massage as a treat for myself. In terms of noise I did hear sirens ring outside but it was not an issue for me. I am docking points only because I wasn't asked or told when she would roll my underwear sown for the butt massage part. A little alarming at first but it did feel nice. If the owner reads this I highly recommend training employs consent over "sensitive" areas just so we know whats going on. Other than that I got over it and I'm feeling much more loose :) read more

Just so you know - my wife and I for massage often and we've been everywhere from St. Regis to local mom/pop to cheap Chinatown massages My wife and I went for massages today and the experience was ruined by the owner. This deal was not honored by the Kata massage or the owner. We had 12pm appointments and we showed up early to fill out paperwork. He wrote down the time wrong and scheduled us at 11:45AM. BEFORE even greeting or welcoming us to the spa he said that he was going to cut our massages short because we were late and yelled at us. We said were not late and said we can reschedule or he can refund us our money and we'll go somewhere else as he is not the only spa in town. Finally he admitted he made a mistake and said the massages would not be short or rushed. I was on the massage table just after 12pm and I was out of the massage room and walking out the door by 12:56pm. This time includes getting undressed and dressed, the few minutes you wait for the massage therapist, the 1-2 minutes the therapist asked me at the end just to lay on the table to get some water for me, and getting dressed. He claims he gave us a full hour massage. The massage itself was rushed and for a one hour hot stone massage i had maybe at MOST 10minutes of stone work/stone time. My wife said her massage therapist was decent - and if it was the appropriate length of time and not rushed maybe worth $60. For me I'd rather go to Chinatown for a better massage. AFTER THE MASSAGE he offered me a Coke - who offers someone a coke after a massage???????? He was rude, he yelled at me and my wife which is unacceptable and he didn't honor the deal we purchased and didn't seem to like the fact that it was Livingsocial. He didn't even care that we were completely dissatisfied The good: - the therapist which were average are friendly. We wanted to experience what it would be like to get a massage outside the city and we found kata via Yelp. Overall experience wasn't bad. Jean the receptionist was a young bubbly personality, a little over the top, but hey, every man to his own. The spa was clean, and the music just how I like it. My masseuse was Lulu. An older lady who didn't speak much (my preference) and she knew what to do especially with my knots in my left shoulder. The day of the appointment the receptionist who booked the appointment told me the salon is closed, but on their site it says they are opened seven days a week. They always ask about areas of attention before starting. This negative review is not of the quality of the massage, but pertains solely to the poor customer service I received from the front desk, after being a returning customer for months, and the nonchalant attitude from the owner himself (a man named Joon). This establishment claims to not take advanced reservations with specific massage therapists until the day of. Yet, on numerous occasions, I have requested appointments with certain therapists as early as 6 AM the day of (4 hours before their opening hour) only to be told that that particular therapist's schedule is already "fully booked" for the day", or that she only had one spot available. As a returning customer, this was frustrating to me as it clearly showed that the person taking reservations was showing favoritism toward certain customers (how is one customer told that no advanced reservations are made, whereas others seem to be able to book in advance?) I have attempted to reach out to the owner so that I can get a better understanding of the reservation policy; no response from Joon. I then decided to regularly inquire about the availability of my preferred therapists, in hopes that one day I would be told that she is indeed available. After weeks of these attempts (none of which were successful), I received a text message from the owner (Joon) telling me that they don't take request appointments because they are "a small staffed team" and "taking request appointment gives them limitations". I then got on the phone with Joon and asked him to explain how this policy seems to be in effect for me but not others; I even brought up the specific experience of being told a therapist's schedule is booked for the day as early as 6 AM. Joon attempted to discredit my story; fortunately, the correspondence in question was through text messages, so I took a screenshot of it and forwarded it to Joon. At this time, I had previously purchased a package of 4 massages and had one session remaining. The ultimate response I received from Joon, after being a loyal customer, is: "If she [the therapist] happens to be available at the time of your visit, we will assign her to you. I can process a refund for your last remaining session if you wish." This event took place in May of 2019. Since then, I have tried calling the establishment to make a reservation (with no particular therapist) yet I am yet to have someone answer my calls. Occasionally, someone seems to accidentally answer and then instantly hang up the phone. I got the impression that the owner has instructed his staff to not answer incoming calls from my number. To verify this theory, I asked friends to call from their own phones directly after I make an unsuccessful attempt reaching the spa's landline. To no surprise, my call did not go through but theirs did. Once again, this review only pertains to the poor management and customer service at this establishment which, from my experience, is top-down. This place is heaven!!! I have had a very mentally and physically distressing year and every time I come here, all my worries just disappear. I have had pretty great massages before and I love this place the most! What makes it so good? The ease of scheduling an appt. The fact that you can text/call on the day and be seen. The hushed conversations, the super-nice and welcoming receptionist who always makes sure your experience is great and makes you tea at the end. There are no overwhelming candles or fragrances, no overwhelming music. It's never loud so your relaxing experience is never interrupted. Best of all, I have had 3 different masseuse and I can only rate them from good to amazing. The current person I go to is just phenomenal. She knows and remembers where my knots and painful spots are! And always tries her very best to loosen those knots! The price is decent and comparable to good massage places in the city or even jersey. And they have packages that are small so you don't feel like you are committing for a long time.
