Before booking, it's incredibly important to understand what kind of massage you are signing up for as it's not always clear when you make an appointment and all massage advertising often uses ambiguous, nondescript imagery presenting a relaxing experience. Spa Zone offers traditional Chinese tui na acupressure massage. For anyone not familiar with this style, I highly recommend researching. Oftentimes people think they are walking into a Swedish massage parlor, which focuses on relaxation and costs much more than Chinese massage parlors' $50-60/hr price range. Tui na style massage is a blend of high pressure kneading, chiropractic maneuvers, and physical therapy to really loosen and stretch limbs, tendons, and release knots. It's much more focused on kneading out tension and improving circulation--and not always relaxing, but sometimes rather painful. Some notable pros about Spa Zone are that they are immaculately clean and the space is lovely. There are many rooms and they offer a wide variety of services for individuals and couples. The cost is affordable, about $55/hr for full body and if you book on Groupon it'll be slightly cheaper. They take pressure requests seriously and really focus on areas you need specialized attention. All of your knots will be undone by the end of the session. The pressure can be quite intense, so if you are wanting softer pressure be sure to let them know. There are also quite a lot of sensory changes, the coconut oil they use is quite cold, the hot stones are scalding--but really relax muscles, and the pressure throughout can be quite heavy handed in high tension areas. Because this is a Chinese run and operated institution, it absolutely helps to speak Mandarin and there will be less information lost in translation as a result. The service will also be friendlier and less transactional if you're able to communicate in Chinese. Bring cash because tipping is mandatory regardless of where you book. They expect a minimum of 20%, also because the base price is so inexpensive--they will insist on a tip and potentially charge your card extra if you do not. If you book via Groupon, you save about $5, but know that upon walk-in they will ask you to pay an additional amount for tax and afterwards you'll need to pay a tip on top of what you've paid on Groupon. For Groupon users, they will only accommodate you if you come before 5pm to not impede on their higher walk-in traffic hours, most of this is not indicated in the fine print. The manager will also encourage you to book directly through them instead of Groupon, they told me they mainly use the platform as a way to attract new clientele. Four stars is a bit generous, but overall I had a good experience, and appreciated the deep tissue work. The main downside was that there was a lot I didn't expect in terms of business practices. This is my go to massage place in Astoria! They are super accommodating, if you need a prenatal massage or if you just want to make a same day massage appointment. They have great package deal when you purchase 10 prepaid massages they give you 2 free for $550. They charge you extra for prenatal though. The massage therapists very good, they are receptive if you need harder or lighter pressure. The rooms and ambiance are clean. You can also pay more and get aromatherapy oils. read more

Went for the couples massage via Groupon...only annoying part of the Groupon is that you have to wait 24 hours from purchase date to book the massage so please keep that in mind when booking.... I was weary at first because I was paying for a Couple's 60MIN VIP Treatment via Groupon gift, and previous reviews stated they were treated horribly once they mentioned Groupon: It was not the case in my experience. We had 1 female and 1 male staff, and they were accommodating. My staff was very professional, strong hands and didn't feel rushed. My boyfriend overall was fine with the massage but his staff did not have as strong a massage as he would've liked. Not sure if I would consider it "VIP", as it felt like a standard 60MIN massage, however I felt very relaxed throughout the time and very clean, comfortable massage beds, and staff had good bedside manners. I would come back definitely. Tip - if you are paying via Groupon redemption code, call to make appt versus online. You also pay a $5 per person tax in cash upfront, which I'm not sure it's posted on the site , but I've specifically seen this practice in other Chinese massage establishments. I came here for a deep cleaning facial ($60 for 50 minutes) and was disappointed. I assumed that the extractions were for my acne, but found out on the spot that it was only for white heads and black heads. While those did get cleaned out, the facial itself wasn't very relaxing. During the cleansing, some product got into my eye and stung. Later on, the facial massage was very rough and due to how the hand movements went, my eyes kept on opening and it made me uncomfortable. There was also a motion where my nostril was covered and it was hard to breathe. While some of the facial massage actions seemed standard, it just felt like a worse version of what I've received in the past by other facial places. Full menu of different types of services including facials and skin care pampering along with many massage options from 30 minutes and longer with rates that are reasonable..The 15 minute wait was fine as the comfy recliner chair was putting me at ease before the lady who spoke just a few words , handled my aching back , shoulders and feet with firm strong hands as I started to zzzzz on the massage bed . The location is also just off the Steinway Street subway stop making it an ideal after work stop. At check in, I was taken immediately back into a quiet, clean private room to have my massage. I don't know the name of the woman who worked on me but she was thorough and had a good sense of where my knots in my back were hiding. I felt lighter and looser immediately afterward, and it has been two weeks since my massage and I still feel amazing, my upper back is no longer tight and my knots have yet to return. Plus, it is very clean and quiet. Each massage table is in a closed-off room (not separated by flimsy curtains) and there is relaxing music playing, along with other nice upscale touches to help you de-stress. We were taken into the room around 2:50. Fine. However, the masseuse's didn't come in until around 3:15 PM. Almost waited an hour essentially. We otherwise wouldn't have cared, but we had another important appointment afterwards. Furthermore, this room was the SAME room I had my massage the first time. It was definitely not a VIP room. There was absolutely no ambiance. We also did not get massaged in our frontal leg and neck area, whereas I got that massage there before. The massage therapist I've seen twice now is Amy and she is very sweet and excellent at deep tissue! The only OK review is due to the male masseuse who was way too rough. I asked several times for a lighter touch but he was just not able to do oblige. They start very weak, really weak. When you request to bit a bit harder, they go really hard and it becomes really uncomfortable. When I asked for medium pressure, they go back to the really lowest pressure and it repeats. They showed the frustrations to the customers when they went there for the relaxations.
