Give Filipino gelato a (s)wirl at Kariton Sorbetes! This little joint (which can be easy to miss in Chinatown due to its lack of signage) takes classic flavours like ube and pandan and transforms them into heavenly delights.
During my short visit in Melbourne, I went twice for the Buko Pandan (A$6.50) and the Taho (A$8.50), respectively. You do get to try samples, so definitely go for it if you're undecided because you don't see these flavours everywhere.
The Taho - a silken tofu soft serve with tapioca pearls, oolong syrup, and pannacotta - seems to be a fan favourite. However, I was the last customer in line with my friend, so it may have been rushed: the soft serve was melting and the syrup was too sweet for me. I did enjoy the silken tofu itself since it reminded me of 豆腐花 (tofu pudding).
I far enjoyed the Buko Pandan more, which I had for my first visit, given its consistency and flavour profile. You get notes of coconut and condensed milk, mixed with pops of shredded coconut, toasted rice flakes, and pandan jelly. It has incredible mouthfeel with just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. Might I add that the waffle cone has a lovely crunch to further enhance the texture.
The interior design is quite interesting too. The menu is projected behind the counter; there is merchandise hanging on the wall; and there are plastic coloured stools similar to being on the streets of Asia. It's clean, spacious, and fitting for the space! read more
