A cool experience. Welcome to The Lab, A science experience room filled with beakers and N2 liquid nitrogen. Great theory and its got that WOW factor. A ice cream joint. Interesting flavors, made from liquid, placed in processor and the laced with Liquid Nitrogen to freeze the liquid and make some awesome Ice cream. New flavors all the time, and added extra's included. I ordered a Golden Gay time Crunch. Consisted of Salted caramel ice cream, topped with crumble. It was pretty amaze. Great tasting and a cool experience.

Making icecream in front of you! No preservatives, colorings, and stabilisers

This is some pretty EXTREME GELATO! The menu isn't extensive but walking past, we saw smoke coming out from the mixer and couldn't resist stopping and watching. Though it was a cold and rainy night in Melbourne, we decided to try the punchy passionfruit cheesecake gelato which gets made fresh in front of your eyes! Basically they use liquid nitrogen to churn out your order and create instant fresh gelato! The sign says there are no preservatives, no stabilisers, no artificial colorings, and using only fresh ingredients. A fun experience but I'm not sure if I would pay $6 very often for an average serving of gelato. The flavours weren't quite right for my liking, it was a bit too tart though I understand this is because they don't add anything else. Difficult choice but I would encourage you to try one for yourself so you can see the process!

Some liquid nitrogen drama.

I really wanted to like The Lab. But maybe I was destined for disappointment as I was still on a high after my first visit to Gelato Messina (personal favourite gelato in Melbourne!) But this venue seems to be a bit more showy (watching the liquid nitrogen vapours spill over the counter was cool), but over-all I wasn't very impressed with the outcome. There were only 6 flavours to choose from - three of which were the basic chocolate, strawberry and salted caramel dressed up to sound a little fancier. I wasn't that excited by the flavour selection. But if I was, the single serving sizes were large, cost $6 a cup, and prohibitive to ordering multiple flavour combinations. Entertaining for a one-off visit. But if you value taste and variety, then head elsewhere.

Gaytime Crunch & Cookies & Cream

I was disappointed that they weren't making the gelato to order - part of the fun is watching it get made. We had the cookies & cream (topped with whipped cream and garnished with a chocolate cookie). This one was excellent - the gelato was rich and silky smooth. We also ordered the Gaytime Crunch, which was a bit of a disappointment. The salted caramel gelato with chocolate chips just didn't taste like much, and the texture wasn't as silky as cookies & cream. It was topped with butter biscuit crumbs and dark liquid caramel, which helped a bit. All in all, it was decent but I wasn't blown away. They do accept cards and Apple Pay.

Rasberry Sorbet (dairy free, yay!) with Nutella and biscuit stuff. Golden Gaytime.

So I know fro-yo is all the rage. But man, what I wouldn't give to live on Nitro Lab for dessert for the rest of my time. An ever changing menu of between 4-8 designs, think things like Golden Gaytime, or Rasberry Sorbet with Nutella, or dairy free Piña Colada, or the little bit of heaven that was chocolate ice-cream with Milo and Nutella and something else chocolatty and amazing. You can also mix and match your own, and add a syringe with toppings, and get everything served I a cup, a waffle cone, or on waffles. Fun Fact (quite obvious from the name and other reviews): everything is frozen using liquid nitrogen - which means it's quick, and looks TOTALLY COOL!!

Walked by this place and it seemed interesting. I ordered the salted caramel with a syringe of caramel. It was fun to just watch them make it! The gelato was amazing! The syringe on the other had was gross. I would highly recommend.

Cool to look at, the ice cream itself is pretty average. The making of it is pretty interesting, although It kind of just looks like a science experiment out of a high school classroom. The serving sizes are also pretty small for the price. Overall it was pretty average, but good if you're after a little sweet treat.

Icecream made from adding liquid nitrogen. They usually change their menus to have new flavours but they always have 8 on their menu everytime. You can also add syringe flavours ontop of your icecream flavour like chocolate, strawberry, caramel etc. my favourife flavour here is nutella. Why does ice cream always taste better in winter? I would definitely recommend this place if you're out in the city looking for dessert.

Amazing gelato and ice cream! Very busy though and when we ordered our order was messed up and so we didn't quite get what we had originally ordered but it was still good. Would try again :)

I didn't want to start off this review negatively, but when I was promised a thousand blessings I…read moredamn well expected them. All I felt 933 of them and i feel cheated, as for the frozen part, the product was only part frozen. Another disappointment. I also did not appreciate the sheer amount of choice of flavour available in store. 6 choices? It sent my anxiety into overdrive and I felt on the verge of a panic attack. Why not just one flavour: plain, coupled with a daily rotating flavour of the week. And also just out of curiosity, why don't you sell/do pizza? There's clearly a gap in the market there

I was thrilled when Frozen took over a section of what was once an unreasonably enormous pharmacy to bring the tart goodness of fro yo to South Yarra. It's a familiar formula: choose a small, medium or large cup. Fill it with your favorite flavors (natural, coconut and chocolate are my picks), then load on your toppings from the self serve bar and pay by weight. These aren't just any toppings though. They rotate... a lot... which is obviously a clever ploy to keep customers coming back for more. It works. I fall for it. Because they're interesting: halva (halawa), banana bread, green tea and red bean mochi, passionfruit pearls, super ripe and fresh mango, kiwi and more, PB cups, toasted nuts, muesli, shredded coconut... You can be as virtuous or indulgent as you like, moving from the right side of the bar (fruit, nuts etc) to the left (sex, er, chocolate). You can taste any flavor you want before paying. ... See you there?

The best value can be gained by choosing the sundaes where you select 3 flavours and get warm chocolaty fudge with nuts and whipped cream. I can feel my thighs growing just thinking about it. An equally good idea is the Little Tacker version which replaces the cream and nuts with smarties in a slightly smaller cup. The flavours are diverse and often incorporate seasonal favourites such as Easter Egg and Christmas Pudding. There are also Aussie icons like Lamington. My long time favourite is the spotty dog. Gluten free options are also available as are birthday cakes, shakes and take home tins of gelato/sorbet. The store at this location is a bit hectic and the seating area is often in disarray, not great feng shui. My tip is to take your treat to the side of the Yarra and enjoy it there as you watch the world go by. Or even better yet take a stroll along the river and eat as you go, in an attempt to burn off some calories at the same time!

There's no actual sign up but just look for the hipster neon signs (either the red grocer or aqua gelati). We dropped in on a Thursday evening (around 9:15pm) and it was busy. There was a queue but it moves fairly quickly. The flavours are up on a sheet to the side; gelati, specials and sorbet. They also have smoothies and juices available. There were 16 flavours, all very traditional. - 2x mango & passionfruit ($5.00 AUD) - it's more mango than passionfruit. It won't blow you away but it's still good. The cone itself is dinky and flavourless. - Coconut pandan ($5.00 AUD) - B's choice which I had a taste of. It's coconut prominent. Could barely taste any pandan. Good but there's better gelato shops. Cash only. 3.5 stars.

(Gee, that was a mouthful) Situated in quiet Yarra lane which is just off Darling Street, the new self-serve concept has yet to pick up but we're sure it will soon enough. How it works is you are the master of your own yoghurt cup experience. It's a clever system, I think because you decide how much yoghurt you want (perfect for small or very large eaters) and then you choose your toppings and everything is calculated by weight. This means, if you're in a huge yoghurt mood and you fill your bowl with yoghurt and toppings, you pay the price. Likewise, if you're just in the mood for a quick slither of a taste, you pay for the small portion. It's the perfect equation and one where you can never again blame the service staff for under or over portioning. My advice however is to try the flavours you're interested in before your swirl your cup under the yoghurt machine. Once you're set on your choice (you can choose as many flavours as you like), then you start the DIY part. We've been here on two occasions now and it's always empty because the apartments nearby are still quite vacant but we're sure once word gets round, this place will pack up so get in before everybody else.
