This was one of the more underwhelming cupcake experiences I have had. We stopped by Oxbow after wine tasting and I was craving ice cream. They used to have a little ice cream shop but it had closed down and I was on the hunt for something else to satisfy my sweet tooth! I found Kara's and knew we had to get one. I got the gingerbread and my boyfriend got the yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting (which worked out because that was the other one I wanted to taste). The total came out to over $8, which is a lot but also expected for a cupcake from Kara's or really any bakery these days. As soon as I tasted it I realized that the flavors were off, the cupcake was dry, and the frosting on mine was wayyy too buttery! I thought it may have just been a one off thing so I tasted the yellow cupcake -- very similar dry cake but the frosting was definitely better! I must say that I really was not impressed with these cupcakes and suggest you search elsewhere of you are considering Kara's. read more

Oxbow is such a fun place to visit and shop. So many good places to eat. And after a hearty meal. I like to head over to this place for dessert..sooo many different kinds of cup cake to choose from its hard to decide.. But I do know that no matter which one I choose, it will be a pure delight. Behind the shadow of Fieldwork Brewing Company and among the plethora of dining options, is Kara's Cupcakes, nestled in it's own corner of the Oxbow Public Market. In all honesty, I am not a huge cupcake fan, so 4/5 stars is really the biggest compliment I can give this place. I had the passion fruit cupcake and it was very good. Not too sweet and I really appreciated the tart passion fruit filling. I take back my previous compliment. My compliment of the passion fruit filling is the biggest compliment I can give Kara's Cupcakes. I really don't like passion fruit in general. Final Thoughts. Based on the overall review score of this establishment, I'm getting the impression that reviewing cupcakes can be very subjective. So, I'll leave this review with this... I'm sure some will find the cupcakes here as overpriced/overrated, others will think it is the best thing they have ever had. The reviews reflect this and I tend to lean towards more of the great side of the argument. I have such a sweet tooth and was so excited to sink my teeth into some Kara's Cupcakes! Kara's Cupcakes has a cute boutique stand located inside the Oxbow Public Market. We came in around mid afternoon and they only had about 5 cupcakes to choose from. We decided to try the vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting and a vanilla cupcake with coconut frosting . The cupcakes were super cute and eye pleasing. They were nicely packed in a cute to-go box. The cupcakes were okay. The cake was kind of dry and the frosting was too sugary. The chocolate frosting, in particular, only had a hint of chocolate taste to it and tasted more like sugar cream to me. I honestly was expecting a delicious tasting cupcake considering the presentation of the cupcakes were so pleasing. Overall, the cupcakes were good enough to fulfill a sweet tooth craving in the moment, but the cupcakes were not memorable. I've definitely had better cupcakes. read more

We did a road trip to check out Oxbow Public Market when we came a crossed Kara's Cupcakes!! We decided to go eat our meal first and come back for dessert! When we came back, we checked out their display case. Lots to choose from. They make unique flavors and are very pretty. Looks like they even make cakes, too. I set my eyes on a coconut cupcake! They offered chocolate or the white cake kind. I went with the white. Maybe it was an off day, but mine was dry. A little disappointing. I've read the reviews. A lot of people said theirs were moist. So off day?!?! They do offer unique flavors and there was a crowd! Overall, super nice young lady helping us out. She was helpful and courteous. We grabbed some gourmet coffee (Ritual) at Oxbow Market and wanted to have a light pastry to tide us over until dinner on NYE. Kara's Cupcakes looked like the prime option. They have many flavors and can be pricey at $3.50/each. They definitely have a generous amount of frosting on each. I only tried the Java cupcake with espresso bean on top. It was really sweet, almost too sweet. It would have been nice to have some bitterness so it retains more of that coffee flavor. Still, the cake was really moist and sticky. Quite a bit of residual cake stuck on the wrapper. Because of this less than 100% cake yield, I tend to like cookies and donuts better since they stick less. They did have one oatmeal cookie left which we enjoyed more. Thick, crumbly, and laced with some dried apricot and other exotic ingredients. read more

Another post said "underwhelming" and they hit the mail on the head. I purchased 4 cupcakes (the tip options were hilarious--started at 18%) and the total was $17 something. Fleur de sel: dude said it was 'good' - seem fresh-ish. Passionfruit: by far the best one. Has a flavorful filling. Pumpkin Spice: 1 star. It's a flavor that's basically sweet bread made in a kitchen with spices around. 1% spice = 1 star. Red velvet: 1 star. The top part of the cupcake was a brick (the top part is supposed to be the best part). Icing was forgettable and didn't support the dry-a** cupcake. Get better cupcakes elsewhere. If you're desperate go for the passionfruit one (I would not have picked it, but it was the best one out of our four). read more

The frosting was oily and tasteless. Regarding service: The two men working at this location were so rude we will never go back. Unique flavors! I've been to this location twice now and I've always enjoyed treats from Kara's Cupcakes. It's almost Fall so the store will be selling their seasonal favorites like pumpkin spice cupcakes soon. In my second visit I decided to purchase the monthly special. It was the 'chocolaty chocolate vanilla chocolate chip cupcake' -whew- that was a mouthful... literally! It was a chocolate cupcake with a sweet vanilla frosting that has chopped chocolate chips folded in and decorated with an edible custom logo disc. Kara's Cupcakes gives back to the community in September and a portion of the proceeds from this purchase of the monthly special cupcake helps support research for childhood cancers. The cupcakes are moist and delicious and the sweet smell is enticing. The cupcakes sell fast or maybe they bake in small batches because originally as I was deciding on what to get I noticed that the selection seemed low but alas! they were replenishing the glass display case with a freshly baked new batch... check out their artisan cupcakes, cakes, cookies and sweet treats and you'll want to come back for more! This store is located inside the Oxbow Public Market in the main market hall and you can eat in or get it boxed to bring home. My friends and I were in the area one day and had a sweet tooth so we decided to come to Kara's cupcakes. If you are unfamiliar with the area, it located inside a market place, which is really nice and you get to see a variety of other foods if you do get hungry. The woman working the front was really kind and suggested that we'd try their best seller the fleur de sal, that's a chocolate cupcake with caramel drizzle on the inside and a dark chocolate frosting on top, we then also tried the lemony lemon, sweet chocolate, banana and the vanilla chocolate- all in mini sizes. I must say after paying $21 for these cupcakes we were really surprised at how they tasted- ridiculously dry. The fleur de sal- the frosting was so hard that when you put a fork into it the whole thing came off and got separated from the actual cupcake, it was extremely overpowering and hard to chew. The cupcake itself was really dry and the caramel drizzle tasted really artificial so we didn't even finish it. The lemony lemon- could have actually been more lemony and again super dry. The sweet chocolate- was a very interesting flavor cause it was a chocolate flavor cupcake with a sweet almost Oreo frosting on top which was the only one that wasn't as hard or dry to eat, I'd give it a 7/10. The chocolate vanilla- was again alright, nothing special about it but i would say a more sweeter better tasting frosting than on the fleur de sal. My favorite and the one that was the most decent was the banana cupcake- the frosting was so delicious and not hard to bite into it, it was a creamy cinnamon flavored frosting that really complimented the banana cupcake, this would be the only cupcake I'd ever get if I go back here. read more

Some great cupcakes! Usually we get gifted a dozen on the nurses unit, but it was nice to go to one in person and look at all the options. This particular location is in the Oxbow Public Market building and on the day we went it was VERY crowded. That being said, there weren't as many dessert options besides the cupcakes. All of the flavors I've had so far have been delicious, but they are pretty sweet and pack a large amount of frosting on top. My personal favorites are chocolate on chocolate and chocolate on vanilla. I would love to see them come out with a strawberry cupcake one of these days! I'm sure it'd be a hit. read more

we stopped by kara's cupcakes since it was in the oxbow. i have seen this cupcake shop before but i think the last time i had a cupcake from them was over 5 years ago! it was my friends birthday and she wanted some cupcakes so we each picked out a flavor that we wanted. we ordered the flavor of the month (bailey irish), chocolate velvet, carrot cake and smore's. i was impressed with how moist each of their cupcakes were and the flavor was amazing! definitely great for a sweet tooth! price: for 4 cupcakes it was $15.40, they don't state the price of each cupcake anywhere from what i saw. carrot cake: the cake itself had bits and pieces of what you expect from a carrot cake and it was super moist. it easily crumbled but still held its shape well. what i was confused was how strong the almond extract was in the frosting. it seemed unporportional to the cake. i usually expect cream cheese frosting. besides having such a heavy almond taste, the texture and consistency was smooth. i would get it again! chocolate velvet: i didn't try this one, but my friend really liked it. the chocolate cake was not too sweet while the frosting was super smooth and decidant. smore's: there was a base cookie layer, a chocolate cake layer and topped with a toasted marshmallow. for those who loves smores, this one is for you! this spot is quick and convenient. i think its wonderful to have a little bakery in the oxbow and i would be back! read more

My favorite cupcake place Sift closed down. So I decided to order cupcakes from Kara's. I ended up ordering 16 cupcakes of a variety of flavors. They were all decorated in a cute manner. However, the taste was another thing. The frosting was fine However, the cupcake itself was very dry. It was quite disappointing for a 4.50 cupcake. Sift's cupcakes were moist and delicious. These not so much. Unfortunately I won't be back and will have to find another place for cupcakes or break down and bake them myself! read more

I came to the Oxbow market a couple times during my trip and each visit I picked up some cupcakes. They were amazing! Wide range of flavors, soft and lots of flavor in each bite. I really enjoyed the mini cupcakes specifically the banana ones they tasted like fresh baked banana bread and were delicious! The line for this place can get long, and they do run out of a lot of flavors so be sure to get there earlier in the day if you're planning to visit. It reminds me of sprinkles but local! Both times I visited I was helped by Esperanza, she was so nice and helpful each time! She was knowledgeable of the flavors and was able to help me narrow down my decisions. We were in Napa with some friends for lunch and decided to get something sweet and Kara's Cupcakes was right in front of us. The place was popular but watching them decorate the cupcakes and the smell of fresh baked cupcakes I didn't mind waiting. Once I was ready to order the Vanilla Coconut caught my eye. I love coconut so had to get a couple. I sat down to eat and the cupcake was so moist and there was just enough frosting. Some have too much frosting. I have to say it was the best cupcake I have had so far. We walked away to do more shopping. We were actually leaving the market when hubby and I said we have to have another. When I think of Kara's, I think, of pretty looking, but pricey cupcakes...good lord three twenty five for a lil cupcake?! My coworker thinks I'm crazy for paying $2.95 for one at my favorite place in the Marina, but over $3 is a little absurd to me. The Kara girls were nice and very informative telling us which are the most popular ones & what is in each that we asked about. I was so stuffed from our lunch next door at Gott's, but bf wanted to try a cupcake. He chose the Chocolate Velvet, which I got a few nibbles of. The chocolate cake was nice & moist & the chocolate buttercream frosting was not overly sweet. The frosting looked like it would've been a hard frosting but was very soft. I like mine on the medium side gravitating a little towards the hard side. Kara's is definitely better than Sprinkles but can't replace my Marina fave! The two times I had Sprinkles I felt so sick from the overly sweet massive amount of frosting that they use (at least the second time the cupcake was given to me free of charge)!
