Lovely concept - Japanese style counter top where the chef socialize and serve you but with local ingredients and dishes Perfect atmosphere for a lively but elegant meal. All the food was delicious though the rice bowl was a bit too rich. The service was good though they did spill some sake when pouring and I was surprised they didn't replace it so they must not have realized I also wish they were more tactful about the supplements. In Japan they would lay out the ingredients in a wooden box and mention in before taking it away rather than shout asking who wants each time which i found a little tacky Hope they make some adjustments cause this place could be a real game changer for the area

Stanford Shopping Center has become a proving ground for ambition lately, a glossy corridor where new restaurants arrive with confidence and--often--crowds. Kappo, which opened quietly last December, has already lived a small drama of anticipation: reservations made, then abruptly canceled when the restaurant shuttered just as quickly as it appeared. When it finally reopened last week, curiosity demanded a visit. Tucked discreetly between Dumpling Time and Zaytinya, Kappo is an intimate, high-stakes stage. It feels like a traditional Japanese omakase experience but with a playful California soul. Executive Chef Nikolas Neuwirt is right there behind the counter, making the whole meal feel like a private performance. The standout dish was a meat dumpling cooked in a takoyaki-style pan. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, with a house-made ketchup that adds just the right touch of sweetness. Familiar flavors, but done in a smart, slightly unexpected way. The main hiccup wasn't the food but the pacing. With such a small counter, timing matters, and a few late arrivals (thanks to the notoriously difficult parking situation at Stanford Shopping Center) threw off the rhythm between dishes. Once things fell out of sync, the meal felt a bit stop-and-go. Overall, a very solid experience with a lot of potential. The food is thoughtful, the vibe is intimate, and I'd definitely come back. Pro tip: arrive early--parking at Stanford Shopping Center during dinner hours is no joke.

This new gem of fine dining at Stanford Mall, only recently opened, delivered a memorable dining experience. The team, led by Chef Nik and manager Nick, delivered an innovative delicious tasting menu with local ingredients, many foraged by the Chef. The wine pairings were also wonderful. We will be back many times I expect.

I got 2 quesobirria tacos and 2 tacos al pastor, and visually everything looked on point -- the plating was clean, tacos looked well-stuffed, and the birria tortillas had that nice golden crisp. But once we started eating, we all felt the same thing: the salsas were lacking flavor. And with tacos like these, good salsa takes everything to the next level. Here, it kind of held them back. They only gave me two tiny lime pieces, and I couldn't even get enough juice out of them to brighten up the tacos. Something so simple, but it makes a huge difference. We also asked for chips and salsa (they're not free), and they never came. Honest mistake -- they were cool about it and took it off the bill -- but still, it added to the overall experience. Another thing: the nopales weren't well cooked or prepped. They had that slightly tough, raw texture instead of the tender, seasoned bite they should have. Flavor-wise, the pastor and birria were decent, but with weak salsa and barely any lime, it felt incomplete. All four of us agreed on the same thing: This place could be great if they tighten up their salsas and the little details. I'd give them another shot someday because the base is there -- they just need that extra punch of flavor to really elevate their tacos.

Service was fine. The decor felt vintage, with cute booths and seating along the wall, but unfortunately where we were seated in the middle of the room felt less cozy, with a very strange bathroom/sewer smell that the server never acknowledged (but we could all smell it!). The food varied. Some hits were: - paella (solid, good for sharing but not too large) - sardine toasts (delicious!) - pulpo (very soft, one of the better I've had) Some misses were: - pork shoulder on toast (just felt like ham) - patatas bravas (fried okay but sauce wasn't great) Overall, the flavors had hits and misses, but the portions felt a bit small for the price. We left feeling unimpressed, it might have been an off day, so I might give it another chance!

We each ordered a few salads and a pasta, and shared vegetables for the table, and every single dish was outstanding. The ambiance really elevated the experience. We were seated on the patio on a beautiful Menlo Park day, which made the meal feel even more special, relaxed, vibrant, and effortlessly enjoyable. Service was equally impressive. My water glass was never empty, and the staff offered thoughtful, friendly recommendations that clearly came from knowing the menu well. The standout moment, though, was when I mentioned I had been hoping for a cookie, but they had just sold out. To my surprise, the chef made a fresh batch and brought some out for us at the end. That level of care and hospitality truly wowed me. This was one of those meals where everything just clicks, food, service, and setting. I'll absolutely be back, especially to check out their happy hour.
