Had a happy hour here after the spa. The interior bar area is a bit boring and not highlighting the elegance, especially after placing a TV there showing soccer matches. I feel like the classic British gentlemen's club ambiance was ruined. However, seating outside is another story. It's calm and peaceful, with lots of space and warm and comfortable. There are also shawls and blankets on the sofas for the night. Cocktails were ok, we tried Spritz District and La Dama Rosa, and Citrus & Shadow. Citrus and Shadow tasted the best, probably because it's low ABV and hence bringing out more sweetness. We ordered truffle fries, a cheese plate, and a hummus dip with bread to share. The food tasted good. The truffle fries have shredded truffles on the top, not the kind with sprinkled truffles. I also like the cheese plate, especially the blue cheese, good sumptuous amount. The fruit slices were peaches and plums and pears, I almost thought they were apples. They all tasted fresh. Service was also good. The way the waitress brought out the drinks gave us enough room to enjoy ourselves without reaching over to receive the beverages. The location is nearly perfect if you are driving from San Francisco and a short distance from Highway 280. This is an excellent place for business luncheons or a meal in a lovely setting. I give high marks for the menu because you can find what appeals to most based on dietary needs and the food is sourced locally and sustainably. The Manresa sourdough bread with Strauss Family Creamery tarragon butter is a must. The salads are inventive and you can add a protein even Mt Lassen trout which is delicious and sustainable. I am not one to quibble about size and portions but the scaling back is noticeable. The only complaint I have is the cost of iced tea at $7. It was replenished without the server asking or pouring it from a pitcher so your conversation is not interrupted. However, you pay for refills as a full glass. In the end, you pay for the quality and sourcing of the food and the excellent service in an ideal location including parking. read more

He surprised me with a dinner at Madera Melo Park for our anniversary -- it's a beautiful spot, especially sitting outside with views of the pool and mountains, and the sunsets. We really wanted to live this place. Unfortunately we did not. the food was not up to par. The uni chicharrón dish was sad and stale and poorly plated, the fava bean toast was more of crostini the beet salad was just okay. The fish dish was more like dessert so sweet I was very unhappy. prices felt steep for what we got. Service was lacking too. The ribeye steak, however, was excellent and our server redeemed himself with a delicate hazelnut chocolate dessert that was amazing. Pretty place, but overall too overhyped and overpriced. Madera offers an afternoon tea for $108/person at the lowest price point. It goes up to $200/person if you upgrade to a glass of Dom. We came by to celebrate my sister's birthday. Staff acknowledged it verbally, but also wrote it on her plate which was a cute touch. I also called ahead to request outdoor seating so our shiba could tag along, and staff were able to accommodate. We got 4 mini savory sandwiches, 2 different scones with 3 spreads, and 6 sweets. I liked how the tea sandwiches all came on different bread. Out of the all the sando options, I liked the veggie sandwiches the best. Although beet goat cheese and cucumber avo sound basic, they were very enjoyable and anything but. I didn't like the smoked salmon as I thought it was a bit fishy, but the others in my party were fine with it. The dungeness crab tea sandwich was good as well, just not my favorite. The scones are kept warm in the kitchen, and you can either request them to be delivered with the mini sweets and tea sandwiches, or have them after you finish the sandwiches. The scones were one of the best I've had (after the Ritz HMB), but the spreads they came with were amazing! The passion fruit curd was the perfect amount of tartness, and it paired well with the clotted cream and strawberry rhubarb marmalade. After consuming the sandwiches and a scone, I was too stuffed to enjoy the desserts. The only one I tried before packing up the rest was the pate the fruit. Typically, I don't like this type of mignardises, but I actually found the one Madera made to be tolerable. Service was okay. I had to flag them down to refill water cups at times, but otherwise staff made their rounds and checked on us intermittently. They also brought out a water bowl for my dog when I asked. There is a 5% living wage tacked on to the bill for staff physical and mental health. The negatives: I was a bit dismayed that the one tea I was really interested it was not available. Also, it seemed like the party behind us was also celebrating a birthday, but they were given an extra complimentary sweet whereas we weren't. My point is, if you're going to do that, then at least be fair to everyone. The last bit is a personal thing and wouldn't impact my rating, but I really don't love the low tables. My dog did though! He would try to eat any crumbs I dropped and I had to shoo him off. The price point does seem a bit excessive, but I guess this is California pricing for you. Came here on a quiet Saturday night. It's a beautiful place inside the hotel. The service was professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. Got the ribeye and my wife got the halibut, it took about 30-40 minutes before we got our food after ordering. No idea why it took that long because no reason was given. My steak was cooked perfectly although the portion wasn't very big. It was delicious, though. The halibut was tasty but slightly overcooked, it was dry. Got a dessert that was different and tasty, made with fruit. Overall a nice evening but the food was a little lacking for the price. read more

We had a very lovely afternoon tea experience at Madera. The hotel location is excellent, with a great view of the Santa Cruz mountains, and the atmosphere was great! The tables were low to help with a relaxing atmosphere, and there was plenty of space so the room did not feel cramped. Service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and attentive! The food quality was excellent. They had a decent number of tea choices for the afternoon tea set, and we went for our favourite Earl Grey and Jasmine teas, respectively. The tea was of a high quality but they did not offer any milk or sugar upfront, which was a bit surprising. They started with the sandwiches, which were really well made. The flavours were good and not too intense, and varied as well, starting from a fresh cucumber sandwich, to smoked salmon, to dungeness crab, to coronation chicken. The pastries which were served next were amazing as well. Each one was crafted carefully and complemented very well with the tea. They were on the slightly sweeter side, but were still very good and aesthetic nonetheless. The only criticism is the price. The afternoon tea experience has a base cost of $108 per person. Given that this serves only a single tea, with 4 bites of sandwiches, 6 pastries, and 2 scones each, we thought that it was a little too steep. We had a wonderful experience at Madera Restaurant. The atmosphere was romantic and elegant -- perfect for a special evening. The service was attentive and truly excellent from start to finish. Every dish was delicious and cooked to perfection, and the cheesecake was absolutely heavenly, served with dried fruit that made it even more memorable. We also loved the thoughtful touch of writing "Happy Anniversary" on our dessert plate and surprising us with a Polaroid photo to take home. It has been raining quite a bit in San Francisco lately so decided to take a quick break and go out for some afternoon tea with a friend at the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel. If you are living in the city it is about 30 minutes to one hour drive away depending on traffic. My friend and I made a reservation a few days prior, for their Lunar New Year afternoon tea service. In traditional fashion, we were served some tea sandwiches followed by pastries created in collaboration with Dandelion Chocolate, a local chocolatier based in the city. The pastries ranged from signatures like their petite s'mores to moon cakes filled with red bean filling, appropriate for the occasion. Overall, it was a good experience. I do feel like it is often challenging to find exceptional high tea establishments in the states - compared to the UK or Asia. read more

I ordered a large variety of appetisers from the list for my guests - all of them were very tasty -!!Oysters ,Crab Louie salad ets.!!! The Manresa Bread with butter!!! I know it's sounds so trivial, but trust me it worth to order for the table. I even ordered a few to go for some of my guests . This review is for the $120 (extra $ for the hot chocolate) High Tea experience. The High Tea area is located next to the bar and restaurant, by the fireplace and large windows that open out to the terrace. I actually really enjoyed myself! The only big downside was the price point, and the service at the start. My friend and I were seated for quite a while and watched everyone else get served around us. After about 15 minutes, we had to wave down a waiter just to ask for water and to get things started, even though we already had a reservation. One of the things I love most about high tea in general is how service oriented it usually is, with attention to detail, thoughtful menu explanations, and that extra touch of hospitality. Since this is part of a fancy hotel rather than a small boutique tearoom, it did feel a bit more "corporate fancy" than "cozy and personal." The scene itself was something else! Around us were wedding guests lounging and ordering small bites, and nearby was a group of stylish women, maybe in their late 40s, with impeccable posture, chic outfits, enjoying their tea. I felt like I had wandered into the Menlo Park edition of Gossip Girl. Just your average citizen, happily soaking in views of botox and Birkin bags! As for the food and drinks, wonderful! The hot chocolate was rich and comforting, the desserts were delightful, and the clotted cream with scones was to die for. When our waiter finally made it over, he put on a lovely show flaming our little marshmallow chocolate treat, which added a nice theatrical touch to the experience. Overall, it was a really lovely afternoon with great people watching, a charming atmosphere, and delicious treats. The only thing that needs improvement is the service, which feels like an easy fix. If you are looking for a out of the ordinary Country Club type of eatery, then Madera might be your place. You have a choice of indoor or terrace dining. The views from the terrace is over the swimming pool below with the Santa Cruz Mountains in the background. There is ample parking and a roundabout drop off. There is a sense of exclusivity as you enter but not snobby in any sense. Service is impeccable and friendly. Quality of the food is very good but presentation is poor. Specially, for the cost. I have seen much better plating for far less of the cost of their menu items. Thus, the 4 Star Rating. Not a fan of their bottled organic ketchup too. Maybe, because I prefer a little sugar in my ketchup to offset the tartness !? Portions are also on the smaller side so don't think on the dish will filling you up if you are really hungry. You might want to order an appetizer or two. Would I go back ? Absolutely ! But, my reason would be more for the Country Club feel and relaxation. Kudos for the quality food, service, and privacy ! Classic Shallow Alto experience of overpriced food that is mediocre at best and poorly executed. Went for breakfast. $30 egg white omelette came lukewarm with cold goat cheese inside. No sides of breads or toast for that price (and we weren't even asked if we wanted it). Drop coffee was acidic and tasted like low quality beans. It bothers me more than anything that at this price point, servers interrupt your conservation with your guests, rather than standing and politely waiting (we will know you are there). Everything is delicious - Sunday roast is $80 that comes with bread, salad, and a large slice of meat. Definitely more than enough for 1 person. The meat is so tender and flavorful! Scallop crudo is very fresh, and surprisingly goes well with passionfruit (?) sauce. The sweet-sour tastes opens up appetite and taste palette. We had the pleasure of holding a private dining dinner at the Madera Restaurant in their Lemon Dining room and our party only had rave reviews to give. Please extend my appreciation and thanks to Laura as she was excellent in walking me through the process, all the available options, and every fine detail. Laura for sure made the booking experience outstanding. The Lemon Dining room has a great balcony complete with fire place, couches, and views of the hills - was great space for us to sip some drinks before dinner started. We were able to personalize our per-dinner reception with canapés and cocktails, main meal starters and main entrees (we opted to go with family shared style), cheese course, and drinks. In addition to the amazing food, the team that hosted us at the restaurant for the evening was equally spectacular. Special call out to Liz who took care of all the room needs and all our guests from beginning to end. We most definitely will be looking for hosting another event. read more

I came here for afternoon tea and thoroughly enjoyed it! It definitely was on the pricy side so be aware of that. Of the sandwiches, I think my favorite was the smoked salmon. The scone was really delicious with the clotted cream. The cacao fruit jelly was delicious, a little citrusy, but the color left a little to be desired. Of the desserts I loved the chocolate cannele and of course their signature smore. Dandelion chocolate is always so delicious, so you have to get a cup of their drinking chocolate too! My mom, brother, and I came for afternoon tea yesterday and we had a great experience! We were in Lauren's section and she was very attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. The collab with Dandelion Chocolate was amazing! We really enjoyed everything, and we didn't leave hungry. They were also very accommodating as my mom is allergic to salmon, so they were able to swap out the smoked salmon sandwich for another sandwich of her choice. All of the teas, desserts, sandwiches, and scones were delicious, but our favorites were the panna cotta and the chocolate carrot cake! The ambiance was very cozy, especially since it was a rainy day! We also loved the gift of hot chocolate mix to take home at the end- what a great touch! Yesterday was Thanksgiving and the four of us were fortunate to join the good staff at Madera for dinner. Publicized as a four course menu ($198 each, not including taxes, gratuity, 5% Fair Wage tax) the menu we actually ate was actually different than posted. I don't know why ( they ran out?) but it was still excellent. One nit, when seated the server noticed us the meal was "family style." For the price being charged and the fact we were dressed up none of us wanted to be dishing out our own food. We asked politely if the Chef would be kind enough to serve each course. Server says, "I'll ask"--- nothing happens for a while and then course 1 arrives. Awesome. Classy way to operate. We enjoyed every course and at our own pace. Had a Grenache from Santa Inez that went well with the turkey offering and sides. Food was epic, pictures included. Restaurant was full and ran like a Swiss Watch. Was lovely and will do again. One nice last touch-- when we arrived they told us they would seat us at the quoted reservation time. We went in the lounge to wait the 10 minutes--15 min went by and no big deal especially on a holiday-- and server comes in and says the table still isn't clear. And, we'd like to but you a cocktail while you're waiting. Pretty cool huh? After dropping off the drinks he showed up 10 minutes later and said table was ready. Amazing way to start a great evening. 5 stars for gluten free tea. 4 for regular tea. The seating is casual-- low chairs and couches at low tables. That's not horrible but it was awkward at times and became uncomfortable. My food is veeeerrrrrry far away and I have to get up and down. The savory sandos were excellent. The fillings were all delicious. The scones were quite dry and crumbly. They came with clotted cream and an interesting compote. Sweets: I didn't really love any of them but neither were they horrible. They all looked pretty but the taste was such I only finished one. Also, some items had wet frosting and as there are no forks or serving utensils it was an unpleasant and messy experience to move it to plate. Then it needed the teaspoon to assist with eating which again is odd to have the one utensil doing all jobs. Tea: a small variety but good enough. They are served in a glass pot with removable tea strainer. They also give extra hot water to brew yourself more which we liked Each pot came partially filled with water but still it was more than could be poured into our rather small teacups so there is an issue with tea leaves becoming bitter. This was especially a problem with the jasmine. We removed the strainer as soon as it was served but still too bitter for a second brew. They serve honey, which is fine, and we asked for sugar. They have many dairy and non dairy milk choices The gluten free version was one of the best in the Bay. The desserts actually looked better than the regular tea offerings. The service was careful about keeping the gluten and gluten free separate Our servers were nice and tried hard. Bathrooms are upscale and clean-- 2 genders only Parking easy and free I don't think I'd go out of my way to come again but if I lived on the peninsula and needed gf I'd go again. read more

One word: meh. The food was alright, seems like most people come here for the ambiance. The service was also kind of lacking which was disappointing from a restaurant at this price point. Our server was pretty slow and did not ask about our party's food allergies which could have been bad if we didn't remember to ask. The best dish here is definitely the grilled octopus and smashed potatoes. I'd honestly skip the rest of the menu. All of the dishes we ordered were cooked almost perfectly, but unfortunately under seasoned. So the NY strip, pork chop, and fish were all lacking flavor. The broccolini was pretty greasy too. Dined here for a special occasion. I'm a steak lover so I was drawn to the Tomahawk pictured on many Yelp reviews. Unfortunately the experience was a mixed bag primarily because the quality of the steak I eagerly anticipated was a big disappointment. But the evening wasn't a total loss, in fact it was made much more enjoyable thanks to our very professional, pleasant & helpful server Nancy. Nancy is easily one of the best servers I've come across in a very long time. She delivered a first class experience from her wine recommendations, tasting opportunities, menu choices and was also a wealth of information about the Menlo Park property as well as their other locations! The ambiance of the dining room is very nice thanks to the panoramic view of the Santa Cruz mountains and setting Sun. We were told that the medium rare tomahawk would take about 45 minutes to prepare so we started our meal with a small bite that was easily and quickly delivered. The deviled eggs weren't special but served the purpose of getting a quick bite to hold us for a bit. Along with our steak we chose the daily special polenta and a simple side of squash. Both of the sides were delicious. The squash with a surprisingly slight kick and the polenta with a heavier creamy earthiness that didn't clash with the steak. But the main dish was the the tomahawk and that's where it didn't measure up. Not because of how the meat was prepared. The light horseradish and morel mushroom sauce was very very good and the chef cooked the steak to a perfect medium rare temperature. My disappointment was that the cut had far too much fat (large chunks vs marbling) and the meat had an unusual amount of fibrous tendon. Despite the overall size of the cut the amount of edible meat was a big disappointment. Especially for a $198 price tag. read more

Date of Visit: 5/6/2023 This is my third visit to Madera located in the Rosewood Sand Hill Resort in Menlo Park. Just off Hwy 280, the resort is like a hidden oasis just away from the city. Madera was awarded with Michelin star in the year 2010-2014 and 2017-2021. They just lost a star in the most recent Michelin Guide. The waitress serve two glasses of the Brut Rosé from Schramsberg after we sat down as a welcome drink. Bramble $21 We ordered a cocktail with Junipero Gin as base, and with Lemon and Crème de mûre. Superbowl $25 with Salmon +$24 We got a bowls for brunch. The superbowl has wild rice, baby deep greens, avocado, Persian Cucumber, Daikon Sprout, Furikake, Yuzu Vinaigrette. We add a piece of grilled salmon to go with the bowl. Root Down Farms Roasted Half Chicken $39 I got the roasted half chicken with spring mushroom, and on top with Natural Jus Vinaigrette. read more

We made reservations so would recommend the same. We ordered multiple dishes to share amongst our group of 5. I think we could've eaten more but also like the fact that I did not leave the restaurant super full. Among the appetizers and small bites, we got deviled eggs, oysters and tuna Crudo. I think the tuna was the best of the 3. The yolk of deviled eggs was very creamy and delicious. Oysters on the shell aren't exactly my favorite (I prefer the baked version) but they were pretty good too! From the entrees, we got the chicken, lobster frittata and the salmon. The chicken was simply the best. The sauce was amazing. The cook on the chicken was good too! Definitely recommend. The salmon was good but not as good as the chicken. The frittata was a flop. I love frittatas and I love lobster and this dish was just a fail on both - bland, chunky, dry and not much to look at. Do not order this. For dessert, since we couldn't choose, we got the beignets, the poached pears with cheese crumble and the sage ice cream. The sage ice cream was the best of these 3 with the pears a close second. I actually really liked the deconstructed nature of the pears. I just loved the ice cream more because I've never had it before and it really tasted of sage with a background of pistachio. Yummy!! The beignets were not like the OG from NOLA. Much bigger and more oily than what we like. So, not something I would recommend. I also got a green drink with a bunch of greens and it was really good. I don't remember the name though. Now, pricing wise, I don't think the food was worth what we paid. It's good food but that deviled egg dish is $23, which is ridiculous. So you are paying for the name of the restaurant, the experience, the food and that Michelin star which comes and goes. I'm glad I came here once to experience their menu but it's not something that is worth a second look especially if it's your purse that's going to be lighter after the meal. read more

So instead of saying no, one should have said that the wait would be 5 minutes. Oh and a biscuit alongside our coffee at the restaurant but not at the bar (although cheaper there). Madera is located within the gorgeous Rosewood Hotel property. The hotel itself is quite stunning to all the senses, with beautiful architecture and luxe interiors; the fragrance indoors is intoxicating. The cocktail and wine lists are plentiful, and can accommodate selections outside of the menu. The seating is comfortable, along with allowing for cozy and intimate conversation. This is welcomed when majority of restaurants can be congested and challenging to carry on a conversation. If the weather allows, opt to sit on their outside heated terrace and take in the views, all the while staying cozy. read more

We had afternoon tea for four here with their Christmas menu. LOCATION, PARKING, VIBES Easy to access, and lots of free self parking around the area. There are many electric car charging stations in the lot. The restaurant itself is easy to find and has a nice vibe. It's decorated prettily and the staff is all wearing nice clothes. It's well lit but not harshly lit. The tearoom itself had a large Christmas tree, a fireplace, and mood lighting. We were sat in cushy chairs with low coffee tables-- the tables were small, so it was hard to manage the cups, plates, saucers, teapots, and food dishes on such a small surface. SERVICE My one qualm with this experience is that when we arrived, my service dog was apparently an issue. What happened is first they asked "is that a service dog?" I told them yes. It didn't seem to be an issue. They informed us they needed a few extra minutes to set up a table. Well, it turns out they were setting up a new table for us outside. They told me they were going to seat us outside because I brought a pet. I said "this is not a pet. He's a service dog". They said "yes, I'm sorry, I misspoke. What I meant to say is that you need to sit outside because you are dining with an animal, and they can't dine indoors". Now keep in mind that though their outdoors dining space was covered, it was 50° and raining out, and also I'd reserved an inside table. Those of you who know service dog laws already see what's happening here. I wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding, so I said "just to be clear, you are aware that this is a service dog, and you are telling us that we are required to sit outside because he is an animal?" I said it just like that. They said, "yes, our manager told us that's the case for our restaurant". At this point I was like dang, now I have to fight for my basic rights to be treated like other customers! I informed them that under the ADA they're not permitted to discriminate against me for using a service dog by restricting the area in which we can eat. I asked are you aware of this law? They seemed very uncomfortable. Then one of the staff said, "if you'd prefer to sit inside we can seat you inside. We were just offering another option". Now this was a bananas thing to say because, as youve just read, I CONFIRMED that they were saying we HAD to sit outside. But whatever, it seems like they got the message as they were now deeming it acceptable for us to sit at our original table. After this a server brought my dog water. That was nice of them. FOOD The food was great! As a Celiac I was very impressed. I got all the same sandwiches, just served on fluffy white bread rather than the variety that the gluten ones were on. When dessert came, I got the same number of desserts with great substitutions-- chocolate cake, carrot cake, a chocolate tart, mango sorbet, and a significantly sized bowl of fresh fruit. I also received the same scones, just gluten free. Something unique that I really liked here is that they give you a big jug of hot water so that you can keep refilling your teapot at the table. I've never seen that before at a high tea place. WORTH IT? It's important to note that my gluten free meal was at no extra charge! $85 per person, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I went for my birthday celebration dinner. Food was very good and staff was super attentive and kind. They offered to take pictures for us and also gave us a Polaroid to take home. They gave us a complimentary dessert as well. I would definitely return. read more

Came here for the nice view and good service. Had the Halibut special. It was well executed. Dessert was disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. The two desserts we ordered turned out to be just ice-cream on different random pastries. There is much room for improvement in this area. read more

Today my girls friends and I had lunch at Madera. The place is supposed to be one of the nicest upscale spots for lunch. Our experience was terrible. The service abhorrent. There was no service. Water was served immediately by a bus boy and we waited for our server who never came. Finally we flagged down a staff member who was surprised that no one had come to take our drink order even. We ordered lunch and waited again. Finally lunch showed up with extremely small portions. No one came back to check on us. Then when we went to pay our bill we had to ask for the check and then 15minutes later find someone to take our CC. Again we waited for them to process credit cards and be done. No such luck. Had to go again to find out where our CC went. When I got home and had a moment I decided to call the restaurant and tell the manager about my experience. He apologized and told me to come back and he would "make sure we got good service". I will never go back and if I did what am I suppose to do? Inform the staff that I got terrible service the time before and the manager told me to come back so I would have better service? This restaurant is high priced, fine I knew that going in however the service or lack there of, does not match the prices at all. read more

My mom recently passed away and we chose to have a post memorial service dinner at Madera restaurant. The dinning room can only accommodate a group of 8 or less, but we had 10 so we reserved a private room. I worked with a mediocre event planner. She asked for details already provided once or twice; she didn't tell me when items had been discontinued; she sent me an incorrect contract a few times, etc. We needed to pad the catering menu because it was difficult to reach the $2,000 minimum with only 10 people who are not drinkers. So we added a few canapes (at $120 for 10!). The week before she switched us to being able to order off the menu (which I asked for) and said they would serve the canapes in the bar, but neglected to tell us that they would then NOT count toward our total. The night of the event the server kept telling us we hadn't reached our $2,000 limit so we ordered more sides and an additional canape and a few bottles of wine to go. My dad paid for everything the night of the event (more than $3,000 for 10 people). Then, a week later, my credit card was charged an additional $480 for the canapes! No call, no email, no heads up. And those canapes were supposed to be counted toward the total food amount. If you are planning an event, I would seriously reconsider this venue. Be careful who you work with to plan the event and be prepared to be nickel and dimed ($50 for 10 place cards!). In addition to the stressful planning process and the questionable billing practices, the food was... OK and the services was slow. UPDATED: After reaching out to the event planner multiple times for copies of the invoices of what we were charged for, I wrote a letter to Philip Meyer, Regional Vice President & Managing Director. He never replied. But I did finally hear back from the event planner. She did not send the itemized bills. She sent the contract, which she had ALTERED on 11/3 (the event was 10/11 and I was charged on 10/17). read more
