Located in the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel, this former Michelin 1 star remains a classic choice for fine dining, and is of course the most convenient one if you're a hotel guest. The elegant, understated interior is complemented by accommodating service and a well-executed if not particularly distinctive menu. Our party of 2's picks-- Chilled Seafood: Santa Barbara Uni. Chicharron. Kinome. Lime. Starters: Endive & Watercress Salad. Point Reyes Blue Cheese. Apple. Hartley Walnut. Dungeness Crab Louie Salad. Avocado. Dill. Little Gem. Quail Egg. Mains: Root Down Farm Chicken. Boonville Espelette. Calypso Bean. Tuscan Kale. Rosemary Jus. Brandt Ranch Filet Peppercorn Sauce. Fries. Sides: Grilled Broccoli Di Chicco.

Disappointing Service Experience / Birthday Brunch While we enjoyed the food, the service we received fell significantly short of the reputation and caliber of this type of establishment. A wasp landed on one of our plates. While a staff member removed the insect, the place setting was never replaced until we requested a new set. Our starters were served completely out of order, arriving at the table only after our main entrees had already been delivered. Our server failed to ask about dietary restrictions or allergies until late in the meal. This occurred only after I proactively informed her of my severe oyster allergy.

He surprised me with a dinner at Madera Melo Park for our anniversary -- it's a beautiful spot, especially sitting outside with views of the pool and mountains, and the sunsets. We really wanted to live this place. Unfortunately we did not. the food was not up to par. The uni chicharrón dish was sad and stale and poorly plated, the fava bean toast was more of crostini the beet salad was just okay. The fish dish was more like dessert so sweet I was very unhappy. prices felt steep for what we got. Service was lacking too. The ribeye steak, however, was excellent and our server redeemed himself with a delicate hazelnut chocolate dessert that was amazing. Pretty place, but overall too overhyped and overpriced. I'd return only for the steak and dessert.

Came here on a quiet Saturday night. It's a beautiful place inside the hotel. The service was professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. Got the ribeye and my wife got the halibut, it took about 30-40 minutes before we got our food after ordering. No idea why it took that long because no reason was given. My steak was cooked perfectly although the portion wasn't very big. It was delicious, though. The halibut was tasty but slightly overcooked, it was dry. Got a dessert that was different and tasty, made with fruit. Overall a nice evening but the food was a little lacking for the price.

We had a very lovely afternoon tea experience at Madera. The hotel location is excellent, with a great view of the Santa Cruz mountains, and the atmosphere was great! The tables were low to help with a relaxing atmosphere, and there was plenty of space so the room did not feel cramped. Service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and attentive! The food quality was excellent. They had a decent number of tea choices for the afternoon tea set, and we went for our favourite Earl Grey and Jasmine teas, respectively. The tea was of a high quality but they did not offer any milk or sugar upfront, which was a bit surprising. They started with the sandwiches, which were really well made. The flavours were good and not too intense, and varied as well, starting from a fresh cucumber sandwich, to smoked salmon, to dungeness crab, to coronation chicken. The pastries which were served next were amazing as well. Each one was crafted carefully and complemented very well with the tea. They were on the slightly sweeter side, but were still very good and aesthetic nonetheless. The only criticism is the price. The afternoon tea experience has a base cost of $108 per person. Given that this serves only a single tea, with 4 bites of sandwiches, 6 pastries, and 2 scones each, we thought that it was a little too steep. Definitely a great experience to enjoy, but not worth the price tag.

We had a wonderful experience at Madera Restaurant. The atmosphere was romantic and elegant -- perfect for a special evening. The service was attentive and truly excellent from start to finish. Every dish was delicious and cooked to perfection, and the cheesecake was absolutely heavenly, served with dried fruit that made it even more memorable. We also loved the thoughtful touch of writing "Happy Anniversary" on our dessert plate and surprising us with a Polaroid photo to take home. Overall, Madera is definitely a great place for a special occasion. Highly recommended!

It has been raining quite a bit in San Francisco lately so decided to take a quick break and go out for some afternoon tea with a friend at the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel. If you are living in the city it is about 30 minutes to one hour drive away depending on traffic. My friend and I made a reservation a few days prior, for their Lunar New Year afternoon tea service. In traditional fashion, we were served some tea sandwiches followed by pastries created in collaboration with Dandelion Chocolate, a local chocolatier based in the city. The pastries ranged from signatures like their petite s'mores to moon cakes filled with red bean filling, appropriate for the occasion. Overall, it was a good experience. I do feel like it is often challenging to find exceptional high tea establishments in the states - compared to the UK or Asia.

5 star for decor and service. 4 star for drinks and food Easy 4.5 for people looking for a great place to grab drinks and food in a swanky resort in Palo Alto.

    High Tea

This review is for the $120 (extra $ for the hot chocolate) High Tea experience. The High Tea area is located next to the bar and restaurant, by the fireplace and large windows that open out to the terrace. I actually really enjoyed myself! The only big downside was the price point, and the service at the start. My friend and I were seated for quite a while and watched everyone else get served around us. After about 15 minutes, we had to wave down a waiter just to ask for water and to get things started, even though we already had a reservation. One of the things I love most about high tea in general is how service oriented it usually is, with attention to detail, thoughtful menu explanations, and that extra touch of hospitality. Since this is part of a fancy hotel rather than a small boutique tearoom, it did feel a bit more "corporate fancy" than "cozy and personal." The scene itself was something else! Around us were wedding guests lounging and ordering small bites, and nearby was a group of stylish women, maybe in their late 40s, with impeccable posture, chic outfits, enjoying their tea. I felt like I had wandered into the Menlo Park edition of Gossip Girl. Just your average citizen, happily soaking in views of botox and Birkin bags! As for the food and drinks, wonderful! The hot chocolate was rich and comforting, the desserts were delightful, and the clotted cream with scones was to die for. When our waiter finally made it over, he put on a lovely show flaming our little marshmallow chocolate treat, which added a nice theatrical touch to the experience. Overall, it was a really lovely afternoon with great people watching, a charming atmosphere, and delicious treats. The only thing that needs improvement is the service, which feels like an easy fix. Cheers!

If you are looking for a out of the ordinary Country Club type of eatery, then Madera might be your place. You have a choice of indoor or terrace dining. The views from the terrace is over the swimming pool below with the Santa Cruz Mountains in the background. There is ample parking and a roundabout drop off. There is a sense of exclusivity as you enter but not snobby in any sense. Service is impeccable and friendly. Quality of the food is very good but presentation is poor. Specially, for the cost. I have seen much better plating for far less of the cost of their menu items. Thus, the 4 Star Rating. Not a fan of their bottled organic ketchup too. Maybe, because I prefer a little sugar in my ketchup to offset the tartness !? Portions are also on the smaller side so don't think on the dish will filling you up if you are really hungry. You might want to order an appetizer or two. Would I go back ? Absolutely ! But, my reason would be more for the Country Club feel and relaxation. Kudos for the quality food, service, and privacy ! Value and plating are subpar which I hope improves because I do like this place. Note: Some items are not on the online menu so I'm assuming it is subject to change or it might be the dinner menu. Went there for lunch only.

Can you substitute the fish and meat options on the current menu for veterinarians who don't eat seafood either?

Not sure what being a veterinarian has to do with this question, but they will substitute. You may want to let them know beforehand when you make your reservation, so that the server is in the know.

Do you still serve bone marrow?

Right now, we don't feature the bone marrow on the menu. However, we have a some other delicious meat dishes and hopefully, we will be able to add the bone marrow back to the menu soon!

Is it acceptable to bring two toddlers to brunch?

I think it is fine assuming they behave themselves. This is not exactly a family restaurant or hotel...the Ritz and Four Seasons quite frankly do a much better job at that. With that said, if they are decently behaved, then I think it is absolutely…

TBH the menu seems like New American classics that were familiar but upgraded. I thought that the extra candy tasting at the end was a nice touch (seen it at other Michelin star places), but after the the dessert, it was just sweet after sweet after sweet. The sweetness treat could have had a bit of balance. Service was good-- synchronous plate drop, prompt service. Water service stopped after dessert. Also I was a bit irritated by the waitress stopping conversation mid sentence. I'm sure it could not be helped, but doesn't change how I felt about it. Also they kept trying to take 2 of my dishes-- I don't think I am a slow eater but it felt rushed. Ambiance is definitely "vintage" TBH I think this is pricey for Michelin star w/ some of our party add ons it was $250/pp w/ tax and tip. It was a nice touch that they asked if someone was celebrating a special occasion, and gave that someone in our party a ice cream sandwich-- would have been nicer if they gave it to the rest of the party too.

I had made reservations for the restaurant, expecting a casual spot, but was pleasantly surprised by its upscale yet incredibly welcoming ambiance. The staff were all super friendly, and our outdoor seating reservation was perfect after our hike. Inside, I noticed white tablecloths and a truly refined atmosphere. Definitely not what I was expecting, but in the best way possible! Our waiter, Raymond, was a true standout. He was so attentive and gave us fantastic recommendations. I went with the thick French toast, topped with blueberry compote and a sweet cream. It was absolutely divine! Kimberly loved her chicken and waffles, and Claudia raved about the Cañada breakfast. The French toast, in particular, was a revelation: warm, crispy on the outside, and wonderfully soft and gooey inside. It was perfectly balanced, and the side of pork sausage paired beautifully. I also enjoyed a delicious latte that complemented the meal perfectly. Though we were too full to try dessert, the menu looked incredibly promising, and I'm already planning my return to sample some. This place blew me away! The quality of the food and service far exceeded my expectations, especially considering the very reasonable prices for such a high-end experience. Korean Fried Chicken Wings: Crispy, perfectly glazed in a sweet-and-spicy sauce, and topped with sesame seeds. Served with a cool dipping sauce that balances out the heat wonderfully. Definitely a family style dinner, order multiple things to try! Made a reservation couple weeks in advance for a week night dinner for 2. Celebrated our anniversary and couldn't be more happy we came to Ethel's Fancy. Service was great, everyone was friendly and explained the menu and process. Helped making some personal recommendations and the food came out quickly. The only dish that came out very slowly was the dessert, we did wait about 25 - 30 minutes just for the softserve, but all other dishes came out in a moderate time. Rouge de Bordeaux Milk Bread, comes with cultured amazake butter and some salt. Comes out super warm, puffy, and soft. Very nice pull and the butter is super decadent. Very great take on a japanese shokupan, we were hesitant at first, but it makes for a good appetizer 5:5 Warm Sesame Pancakes were like those mini sesame mochi pancakes at chinese dim sum, but the texture was slightly airy. The sauce to accompany it was unlike anything i've had, smoked trout, avocado and yuzu. The avocado was not over powering and the cream on top was whipped. Amazing pairing. 5/5 Sashimi of Kanpachi, japanese cucumber salad as the base and dressing with the kanpachi sashimi. I will say this was the weakest dish of the night. While still good, it was a bit too tart, it overpowered the other natural flavors. Fish was still very good, tender and not fishy, but again, over powered but all the tartness in the dish. 3/5 Yellowfin Tuna on sushi rice - this was a great shareable plate of upscale poke. The tuna was great, no fishy taste, perfectly seasoned and the smoked kira had an amazing pop of flavor. Very rich and decadent dish, absolutely loved the harmony of a slight smokey flavor to the nice rich, umami savoriness. 5/5 Crispy Caledonian Prawns - Absolute star of the night. We could not stop talking about these prawns. Big plump prawns, fried perfectly, where the prawn itself was not dry but the shell had a shatteringly crispy exterior definitely slightly coated with a starch to give it a nice crunch. The chili ramp sunomono was a great touch, not spicy at all but added a great touch of flavor that complimented the crispy prawns. Could devour plates of these! 6/5! Sword-Fish Katsu Style - A great take with sword fish, flakey but not overcooked, great thin crispy katsu. Accompanied by kumquat and cauliflower, helps cut down the greasiness. The sauce with it was a buttery tart sauce. This was a lot better where the tartness helped the fried fish. It was like eating a fried fish burger without the buns. I really enjoyed this one. 5/5 Lastly we ordered a softserve with peaches, shokupan croutons and a caramel dressing. We had to wait about 25 minutes just for the small softserve so we were a bit surprised as other dishes came out relatively quickly or in an orderly fashion. It still tasted great as a little small dessert but definitely was surprised by how long it took. 3/5 Overall, we were very happy with our experience at Ethel's and it definitely lives up to the standard it sets. I can't wait for other new dishes to try and come back in the future.

I have a severe tree nut allergy. Before ordering, I informed our server of my allergy and asked him to identify every dish that contained nuts so I could safely participate in our family-style business dinner. He assured me he would take care of it and specifically pointed out one dish that contained hazelnuts. Later, a golden beet dish was served to the table with no mention that it contained cashews. After taking a few bites, my tongue immediately began tingling. When I asked if the dish contained nuts, our server had to go back to the kitchen to check. He returned and explained that the dish did, in fact, contain cashews and that he didn't know they had recently been added to the recipe. This is exactly the type of mistake allergy protocols are supposed to prevent. Even after it was confirmed that the dish had triggered an allergic reaction, the plate remained on our table until I specifically asked for it to be removed. At the time, I was over six months PREGNANT and traveling alone for work. I had to take Benadryl, leave my business dinner early, miss the remainder of the evening with my colleagues, and spent much of the night vomiting, experiencing gastrointestinal distress, and recovering before a full day of meetings the next morning. I recognize that ingredient changes happen. What is unacceptable is failing to communicate those changes to the staff responsible for protecting guests with serious allergies. The next day, I immediately sent a detailed email to the restaurant's management and owner explaining what happened and asking what changes they planned to make to prevent this from happening to someone else. I never received a response even 2 months later. To make matters worse, I later learned they only removed the charge for the single dish that caused the allergic reaction, despite the significant impact the incident had on my evening, as well as my colleagues, and the obvious seriousness of the situation. I'm incredibly fortunate that my reaction did not progress to anaphylaxis. Another guest may not be so lucky. If you or someone you're dining with has a serious food allergy, I would think very carefully before eating here. A restaurant can make mistakes, but how it responds afterward (or shall I say lack of response) says just as much about its commitment to guest safety; and in my experience, that response was deeply disappointing.

We had no idea a restaurant like this was out in Woodside. The unassuming cabin led to a rustic bar, which then led into a greenhouse room, surrounded by redwoods. Our friend and our toddler loved the views. Food itself was fantastic, everything was very well prepared and there were plenty of vegetarian options as well. I had the quail as a starter and the venison, as my entree. The quail was very well, seasoned and well cooked with very juicy and tender and flavorful meat. The crust was perfectly crispy and was flavorful as well. The venison did not taste gamey at all and was melt in your mouth tender, i really enjoyed this dish. Finally, I had the panna cotta as a dessert, which we confirmed with the restaurant was vegetarian without gelatin. Very light panna cotta without being too cloyingly sweet.I really enjoyed this one too. Everyone else really enjoyed their meals as well. And had nothing but good things to say. If you are looking for a unique restaurant for a special occasion, I would highly recommend this place.

I always order the potato and leak soup. My gosh, this last time had way too much pepper. Way too much. Consistency. 3. Service was slow and sub par over last time. Consistency. I think for the price and type of restaurant, they need to do better at consistency. I'm guessing the staff has been there a while based on the type and location of restaurant.

I am from Oakland and have become a total food snob with our bounty of riches in that town. Breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out so I have a lot of places to compare this to and this place is easily in my top 10 if not top five. I ended up getting the avocado toast which sounds so basic but the chipotle mayo was delicious, and the ratio of spinach to avocado to egg was exactly right and then the buttered delicious sourdough completed it. I decided to order an emotional support pancake, and it's one of the best pancakes that I've ever had. Maybe it's sourdough? It's got a really delicious complex sour note to it and it's beautifully brown. I'm also really picky about coffee and the coffee was delicious. The next time I stay over at my mom's and we go out to breakfast, I'm definitely bringing her here.

One of my visits included the chilaquiles with steak. While I thought the $9 upcharge for the steak was a bit high considering the amount provided, the dish itself was flavorful, saucy, and well-balanced. Most recently, I ordered the omelette with chicken. I appreciated that it came with a generous amount of grilled chicken, along with potatoes and two slices of toast. The portion size felt fair for the price, and I had no complaints about the meal. The restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and it can get quite busy, especially during peak brunch hours. I'm fairly certain it's family-owned, and I think they're doing a great job overall. The one area that could use some improvement is service. On two separate visits, we asked for water shortly after being seated and had to ask again after our food arrived because it had been forgotten. I understand that the staff may be stretched thin when it's busy, but it can also be difficult to flag someone down when you need assistance. That said, these service issues haven't taken away from the quality of the food. Overall, I think Eskina is a great brunch spot with plenty of options to choose from. Lastly, I have a soft spot for restaurants on middle field in lil mex as I grew up in the area! I'm hoping they do well
