For years now, whenever I visit Borough Market, my first stop is Kappacesein for the best-ever grilled cheese sandwich (locally known as a toastie). Made with a combination of Montgomery cheddar, Ogleshield, owner Bill Oglethorpe's Bermondsey-made London raclette, comte, onions and leeks sandwiched between slices of sourdough, this is one satisfying sandwich. The shop also sells Bill Oglethorpe's cheeses (for further enjoyment on the go or back at the hotel.
One of the unique Borough Market experiences, this shop serves just Raclette and Toasties. Small menu done incredibly well. Had the Raclette and it was crusty, salty and super delicious. Friendly folks and an efficient process.
I don't relish in giving bad reviews, but the cheese toastie at Kappacasein was by far the biggest disappointment of my trip to London. As a bonafide grilled cheese lover I had been looking forward to it for months. It was SO SALTY. I could only manage to eat a few bites of one half before giving away the other half to a stranger and then throwing the other half I had partially eaten in the garbage. I HATE wasting food (and money) but this sandwich was inedible to me. I know so many people love it, and I LOVE cheese and grilled cheeses, but the sheer saltiness of this sandwich made it impossible for me to eat.
Best cheese toastie known to man. You get the watch them make it among the buzz of one of the busiest markets. Don't even bother sharing this with someone- everyone needs their own.
Located at the southeast corner of Borough Market, the toastie (grilled cheese) here is so good. Not only are multiple cheeses used, there is even a light coating of cheese on the outside of the bread. This is likely unintentional and carried over from cheese spilled over from the last sandwich on the sandwich press. Either way, it makes the toastie extra cheesy. The staff will slice and wrap into two half sandwiches if you are sharing...but why would you want to?

Located just on the edge of Borough Market Kappacasein sells two main items - the cheese toastie and the raclette. We only tried the cheese toastie but can report that the cheese being toasted and oozed onto the potatoes for the raclette looked excellent. As for the toastie, it was crisp with a sharp taste of the melted cheese with more flavor from the cheese that was crusted on the outside. If you like a flavorful cheese this is lovely, though I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the best toastie or grilled cheese I've ever had. I think the one we had was just a bit overdone personally. A final pro, they will cut up the sandwich if you're sharing which was helpful! $10.54 USD or £8 for a toastie
Came here because I am a sheep and social media told me to try it. There was a line, not surprised, but if you want a toastie queue up to the right and if you want the raclette queue up to the left. The wait was about 15 minutes and I shared the toastie they cut it in half for me. Very tasty and worth the wait. I would definitely recommend. However, does this seem special and unique? No, I feel like I've had something similar elsewhere, but it still is pretty good.
At Borough Market, I was a man on a mission, committed to re-enacting Somebody Feed Phil, season 3.3, the part I would call "Happy Hungry Man devours Toastie." This place is really right on the edge of the Market, walk the perimeter, and eventually you'll find it. The line for toasties moved along quickly, service was fine. The other line moved even quicker for Therese H., who got herself gluten-free cheesy potatoes. For me, the Toastie is a true work of art, and made me happy for the rest of the day!
We saw this on an episode of Somebody Feed Phil and just had to try it! This place is located just across the street from Borough market stalls, near Brindisa (which you should also try, by the way). I thought I wouldn't be a fan of onions in my grilled cheese, but I was wrong! Don't let the line scare you; it moves quite quickly.
Located at the burrough market in london, this place was the first place I visitted when touring. It is a small place and right there when you walk in. Here I got a grilled cheese with their special mix of cheese and other things. I have to say it was really good. The bread was crispy and the cheese was melted yet not messy. The flavor was incredible with all aspects of the sandwich mixing together with amazing flavor. The place is located right away when you are entering the market. It is quick, delicious, and the service is friendly. This place is a must try and I definitely recommend it to anyone visiting burrough market. Its definitely filling and worth the money spent! I will definitely be coming back here on my next trip to London!
Go eat a grilled cheese that should be illegal. It's OOC. Your mouth will thank you. Not much else to say. Eat. it. Now!

If you're craving a cheese toastie in London, I 1000% recommend coming to borough market and going to kappacasein dairy! Super friendly staff and the cheese toasty with onions and leeks was fantastic. I'm still dreaming about this and can't wait to go back and get it again. read more
I've been thinking about this place for years. This was the best grilled cheese I've ever had. On my last day of the trip, I made sure I got one before we left. Sadly the sandwich wasn't as good as I remembered it. Was it still delicious, yes. But it wasn't quite as good as it used to be. read more
My mom really wanted to try Kappacasein at Borough Market - she saw something about the wildly popular cheese toasties online, and the long line at the storefront confirmed her suspicions. We decided to brave the line for the cheese toasties - a few others hopped out of line into the raclette line, which was much shorter - and were able to order our sandwich after about 15 minutes of waiting. The cheese toasties were made fresh-to-order, and our sandwich was freshly scraped from the griddle as soon as we got to the front of the line. Unlike basic grilled cheese sandwiches, Kappacasein includes leeks and a blend of cheeses for a decadent, gooey bite. We ended up sharing a sandwich, which was the right call. Be prepared to wait, the toasties take time. The cheese tastes delicious of course & I appreciate the onions peppered throughout. However, the sandwich just falls flat. It's incredibly greasy and the cheese oozes down while trying to eat it, so if you're waiting for it to cool off, good luck keeping any cheese in! The guys working are nice though. Worth trying but I don't think we would do it again. Maybe the raclette next time. read more

Alarmingly good cheese toasties. I arrived in the morning, just after opening, and there was already a line for the toasties. The raclette was less popular and had a separate line. My toastie was heart attack fodder, but just the right size so it didn't ruin my appetite for the rest of the day. Well worth the wait, made fresh. read more
If you are visiting Borough Market, you must stop here! This was one of the best toasties I've ever had. For $7, you get a huge sandwich full of cheese, onion, and leeks. The cheese and bread were delicious. There are two lines: one for toasties, and one for the raclette. Both lines were long but worth it! read more
YES PLEASE. That kappacasein sandwich was dreamy; cheese, leeks, onions, buttered and toasted bread. Yes to all of it. ALL OF IT. Located in Borough Market, and easily one of the most well known shops there, the line is very long. Stand in it. Don't let this deter you. Watch them scrap the cheese off the big rinds. Enjoy chatting with the manager who is taking orders. Grab a coffee from next door. It's phenomenal and so well worth it. I would be back a million times over! read more

The Raclette cheese really caught my eye. Seeing all these cheese videos blow up on Instagram really brought my attention to this stall. Though the Cheese and Potatoes were the star of the stand, I decided to get the Toasted Cheese Sandwich. Toasted Cheese Sandwich (7 Pounds)- Seeing the number of people at this stall made my expectations high, and sadly, this didn't meet my expectations. The sandwich tasted like a grilled cheese with onions in it. Although the cheese was pretty good, I feel that the price was not corresponding to how big the sandwich was. The onions didn't really add much to it, but I would have liked it more if there was a lot more cheese in it. Overall, I would probably get the Cheese and Potatoes next time. read more
Easily my favorite offering at Borough Market. The Kappacasein sandwich is cheesy goodness with leeks and onions. The best description I can offer is all 4 in our family agree it is the best grilled cheese we've ever had anywhere!! The crowd might be thick. Get in line, a guy will meet you in line to pay, get a ticket, get your sandwich. Easy. read more
I always like a good toasted cheese sandwich and found one here at this Borough Market stand. Sandwiches are made to order. The sandwiches have cheddar cheese with leeks and onions mixed in on sourdough bread. I was there on a weekday and there was not much of a line; I did not have to wait long to get a sandwich. They have a pleasant and relatively efficient process. I would recommend this place. If there again, I would be tempted to try the raclette. read more

I'm surprised we didn't get the Raclette, but the Toasted Cheese Sandwich with Montgomery's Cheddar, Comte, Ogleshield & London Raclette was delicious. I couldn't get the flavor of all the cheeses, but Comte is one of my favorites. The leeks and onions were nicely cooked and the flavor was pleasantly mild in the sandwich. When we told the person at the counter that Mr. Joy and I were ordering one sandwich to share, she had the grilled cheese cut in half. It's the little things that make the service pleasant. read more

Very cute and neat idea be prepared to wait at least half an hour. The sandwich was tasty but nothing out of this world. My huge disappointment and the reason I only gave it three stars was primarily because of the staff. They waited all the way till they made it to the front of the line to basically inform me that I cannot ask for the sandwich without onions and would have to wait another 10 minutes. Normally I wouldn't mind but after such a long wait it really was the last thing I wanted to hear. It's definitely worth trying if you're not too hungry I would suggest splitting a sandwich so that you get your fix and maybe getting something somewhere else. read more
Why 5 stars? Because it's was the tastiest fancy grilled cheese I've ever had! --- --- --- Alex S, you sweet angel of a Yelper. After reading his review of Kappacasein, I knew that I absolutely had to visit. The problem was that once I arrived in London, I saw somewhere that they were closed on the particular day that we were visiting. Not sure if it was Yelp, Facebook or something else. I was definitely bummed, but knew that we would find something else pretty amazing at the Borough Market. And then, in one moment, we turned a corner and my wife exclaimed," Look! That's it!" It indeed was Kappacasein, and they were open for business. Never have I been happier that something on the internet was wrong. After probably being so over-the-top happy/annoying with my order, I watched as they created this magic and it was quite a process. But finally, we were given this magical delight, and it was everything I'd hoped it would be. I can't compare it to your favorite dive bar that does a comfort food, greasy grilled cheese. This is high-brow, pinky in the air grilled cheese. Sometimes high brow grilled cheese tries to be *too* fancy and loses out on taste, but that was not the case here. These sandwiches were long and skinny, but definitely not overwhelmingly large. My only regret was sharing one between myself and my wife - we definitely should have ordered two! read more
There I was wandering London's famous Borough Market taking in the sights and sounds of all of the food vendors peddling their wares while avoiding bumping into other people. Picture after picture I snapped, I smelled deliciousness around every stall and was mesmerized. Of all the things I could have eaten I saw a little shop near the edge of all of the madness. They had two long lines and I walked up near the front and saw them panini pressing some large grilled cheese sandwiches. Yes, folks, I crossed the ocean......to eat a grilled cheese sandwich!!! You pay 7 pounds or so and they give you a ticket. They then load up the sandwich with gobs and gobs of their cheese, onions, and leeks. You then watch as they pop it on the panini press and hand you back your sandwich. What I remember is the CRUNCH. With no place to sit, I stood there like a hobo on the corner crunching away matched with such goodness that it was simple and excellent. This is why I love small menus, excellence in consistency and every bite was savored. Get yourself a grilled cheese sandwich!!! read more

The short: arguably the best grilled cheese of my life... cooked by some of the nicest people in Borough Market... and they take credit card (woohoo for international travelers!). The longer: I was walking around borough market, and the strong smell of cheese lured me to this spot... but the sandwich looked huge and I wasn't ready to commit, so I did another lap. I saw a few other things that looked good... but nothing quite like this (and a few people scoffed at me for asking if they took credit card), so I went back to this spot. I'd read a couple of articles that listed this as one of ten best eats in Borough Market, and they're not wrong. The staff are SUPER friendly, and the grilled cheese is next level delicious. It's filled with different types of mild cheese, onion & scallion on a toasted and buttered crunchy sourdough bread. I highly recommend this- and they'll cut it if you're with another person and want to share. read more

Wow. The cheese toastie is one of the best things you'll ever have. It's one of the best things I've ever had and I can't wait for my next trip to London to indulge in the perfectly grilled, decadently cheesy and flavorful sandwiches with finely diced leek and red onion. The fame of these sandwiches is catching on as the line was a bit long. But they have a good system going to quickly hand out hot toasties and carve raclette onto grilled potatoes. If you're in London, don't miss this place! read more
