The 'cheese maturing cellar' stocks every cheese you could possibly imagine and stores them at various levels of smelliness depending on your own personal tastes. It is truly a homage to fromage! For the sweet tooth's out there La Fromagerie also has a sizeable selection of cakes and pastries. By the shop window there are a couple of tables which are perfect for sitting down with a cup of tea and choosing one of these delicious treats to nibble on. Or if you're feeling extra extravagant then try one of their Valrhona hot chocolates- though beware, these are only for true chocoholics and pack a a fairly bitter punch. My neighbourhood cheese shop is called La Fromagerie and it's so much more than a cheese shop. Now, I only go to La Fromagerie for the cheese and today I purchased brie with truffles that is delicious. What I love about this shop is that the staff is helpful and friendly and offers lots of suggestions when you are buying cheese, Caroline really knows her stuff. Whenever I go into the shop I feel a bit overwhelmed because I'm never exactly sure what I want, I love that I can tell them what I like and they have several selections instantly in mind. When I say that La Fromagerie is more than a cheese shop it means they sell other things. You can pick up a dessert or order a cappuccino. They even have a few tables to sit and enjoy a drink and if you love the smell of cheese you will certainly enjoy that. The shop isn't very big and it doesn't take many people before it starts to feel crowded. Despite that, it's a warm environment and I don't mind wiggling around a few folks as I happily exit the shop with my purchases. read more

The shop is laden with cheeses of all varieties and origins and is always a great experience for the cheese addict. I heard about La Fromagerie from my night out at Gordon Ramsay. When talking to them about their amazing cheese, they mentioned that (at least at the time) they were getting it from La Fromagerie. So I looked them up. I found out that it would clearly be a better plan to go to this one due to its proximity to where we live. (The train takes us right to Finsbury Park.) We had some plans in London that day, so we ran some errands and decided to hit them up on the way home. Okay so the partner loves cheese. I mean, I love cheese too, but he's a bonafide cheese snob. I think it comes from being stuck in the United States for four years with our crappy orange Cheddar cheese and our even more crappy orange American cheese (it's basically some sort of processed cheese usually sold pre-sliced, although it does bring back fond memories of the american "grilled cheese sandwich" and tomato soup from my childhood). He was in absolute heaven. Once we found it (which surprisingly was right next door to another shop that sells cheese), we went in. It was a hot day, and going into the cheese room was a pleasant surprise as it is kept quite cool for the cheese. And the cheese! What can I say except there was shelf after shelf after shelf of cheese. It's probably the most amount of cheese I've seen in one place. And it all looked heavenly. I think we ended up with six or seven different types that we took home and had. It was a bit extravagant, but with all that cheese staring at us, what else could we do? Highly recommend for cheese. I don't know about anything else, but all the other baked goods inside looked delicious as well. I was trying to get the partner's attention to see if he wanted any, but he was so focused on buying cheese, it just didn't work. Maybe next time. A great place to go to get cheese for a party! I felt so lucky when I moved into my new house to find that La Fromagerie was within easy walk. I had heard about it on the grapevine but had never visited. Had I done so, it would have been another good reason to move into the area. The shop is split into two. At the front is a couple of small tables (for coffee/snacks/cheese plates) and a more generic delicatessen (although the cakes are universally fabulous). However, the back is where the action is - a dedicated cheese room. It contains what seems to be all the cheeses which are made in the world. Obviously this can't be true - however, it does feel like all the cheeses that are worth eating are located here. The staff knowledgably guide those who are bewildered by the wide selection or introduce the more seasoned cheese voyagers to something new. Needless to say, I always seem to end up buying far more than I could possibly consume. However, this doesn't stop me coming back for more. read more

I can't add anything that hasn't been said. It's pretty much perfect. I go in weekly for fondue cheese (my kids beg for it, and they scarf down raw veggies, so who am I to complain) which has become a bit of a joke. :) I'm not sure of his name, but the very tall guy with glasses is just wonderful, as is the young French gentleman with glasses. He is very knowledgeable about what's available, is more than happy to give samples, and even offered several to my daughters, which I thought was so nice; kids are so often regarded as a nuisance, but he is really kind to them. I chose to review the Highbury branch of this charming shop because I've moved back to North London! This really is one of the most marvellous cheese shops in London, they stock almost everything, and if you are after something else, they'll source it for you. It does leave your pocket £20 lighter but you won't regret it! Costly but very special. Smaller cousin of the great La Fromagerie on Marylebone High Street, this bijoux branch of the mini chain is compact but definitely the friendlier of the two branches. A must see/smell for lovers of cheese, this North London outpost is the perfect place to pick up some impressive after dinner fare for those who live nearby. They also seem to major in patisserie, which is on display at the front of the shop where you can also enjoy a cup of coffee if you get in quickly enough to grab a seat. Prices are not cheap, as one would imagine, but in fancy cheese terms they are actually relatively reasonable: I've come in here a few times and loaded up on cheese to find I had more change than I was expecting - but this was after visiting the ruinous WholeFoods Market in Kensington... read more

La fromagerie does have an amazing selection of cheeses but it seems you have to have some knowledge of cheese to get anywhere. The person serving me was very helpful offering samples and giving helpful tips he did however advise me to gain cheese knowledge via the net or books and to sample varieties of cheese at markets. The ambience is a little too intimate and pretentious could do with bigger premises. As said before it is not cheap so be prepared to send a good £30 upwards..Will I be returning? maybe when I have a better knowledge of all things cheese. read more

Stumbled upon this place while exploring our new neighborhood. Had been meaning to try their sister branch in Marylebone not realizing that this place existed. I couldn't believe that someplace as fabulous as this existed! The staff are incredibly helpful and made suggestions of cheese for both my husband's preferences and my own. We were invited to try any cheese that they were selling. We walked out with two absolutely delicious cheeses. I can't wait to go back! The cheese they provide here and to local restaurants is quintessential stuff. I've yet to have a bad cheese from here, and any proper meal MUST have cheese in it. While visiting London for an Arsenal match, we happened upon the La Fromagerie on Highbury Park while taking a stroll. We sampled a very nice 3-year old parmesan reggiano, fresh bread, croissants (of course) and a fantastic sausage roll (yeah, a weird combination). What's not to love about this place? I go in with a budget, normally around fifteen quid. And I ask for recommendations for strong cheeses, sheeps cheeses, Spanish cheeses, etc. I'll take home three or four different chunks and I'll do taste tests with the kids. People come from far and wide to go La Fromagerie and that's hardly surprising as their selection and knowledge is spot on. They also have an assortment of cakes and pastries which they serve with coffee, but unless you are used to the smell of cheese with your chocolate brownie, it can be a little off putting. The cheese and other food in this place is great and the staff is for the most part very friendly and helpful. The owner, however, is a rude elderly man who can barely even bring himself to scowl at his customers. I used to go quite often but can't stand to be ignored and barked at by this man any more. Sometimes I walk by and see if he's in there; if not I'll go in but otherwise I just keep walking. He should stay in the back and let his far more competent staff deal with the customers. read more
