Quail Fry - star of the show
    Nora K.

Kappa sent me to the time I was young , broke and traveling far & wide to eat some authentic Malabar(South Indian) food. It is a siren call to Bay Area Malayalee community to congregate around a steaming plate of 'puttu' with friends and family ! Situated in an unassuming lot next to a laundromat, you walk into quirky movie dialogs like 'Mon happy alle?' and profound references on the wall - banana chips (greater than ) relationships :) This means lots of parking - while being accessible off the highway. They are creative for serving craft beer flights -offering everything dear to the mallu heart. Liquor license -check Tips for first timers: Order everything you want together, as early as you can, because food is freshly made to order and good things take time. Get the quail fry - it's bomb - Kerala's Fried Chicken The kulukki sarbath packs a refreshing punch with mint , basil seeds and split green chilli- must try! We tried beef puttu- steaming hot, soft, unapologetically mallu, and very very good! Porotta mutton stew- the flavors on point but I got a bunch of mutton fat among the pieces that should've melted into the gravy . Porotta needs to be more hot and flaky and crushed if it is made to order. The appam was sweet and paired well with stew.. but we expected the crispy edges and soft center of traditional appam. The shrimp roast paired well with the yummy ghee rice ! I'd recommend ghee rice with any of the gravies and fried quail, it was sublime. Filter coffee needs to come in the steel cups , piping hot . .mine was given to me with sugar on the side and lukewarm. Overall I had a great time and hope to come back with friends for long conversations over home food. All the best team Kappa!

    Matta rice

My uncle is from Kerela and South Indian food is my first and dearest memories. Ordered the meen mulakittadhu with matta rice! For a specialty restaurant, it was very good and I will return to try other specialty dishes. I would have like the fish to be deboned, and for the curry to have a bit more lime sourness. But that is only based on my palate. Thank you Kappa for bringing back delicious food memories! The service was 5 stars...

I did a take out today for the order as per picture. This is one of the worst Kerala foods I've had in the bay area. I was so hopeful seeing their insta ads and reels and felt the food would be tasty and authentic but it's all a lie. Coming to the individual items : 1. Meen polichadhu was utterly dry and the masala was bitter. I expected a whole fish but it was just a single piece which was stiff as a rock and tasteless. 2. Chemba Puttu - Very dry and so less in quantity 3. Kerala Parotta - Pl stop calling yourself a Kerala restaurant if you are serving such bad parottas. Even the frozen Costco parottas are better than this. The Parotta was stale and small and stiff. No taste or flavor. 4. Mutton stew - The stew had only two pieces and rest was bones. It was given in a 12 oz container and that was half full. So pathetic. 5. Shrimp roast - The shrimp were overcooked and hard. The masala was a tomato onion paste which any noob can make. No flavor or soul. 6. Kadala curry - This was the only dish which was passable among all the disasters we had. It atleast was not stingy on the channa and had some flavor. Sorry you've lost valuable customers.

The establishment is great at navigating allergens. In my multiple visits, every time the server will double check with the kitchen on items that they are unsure about (whether or not it contains ghee or cream) which I appreciate. Some other restaurants sometimes assume that ghee is okay for me but here they ask! I ask for my roti without ghee and I have never had an allergic reaction to my food after eating here. The interior is very clean and upscale feeling. We dined here on a Tuesday evening and we retry had the restaurant to ourselves. We ordered the goat biryani, goan fish curry, aloo gobi and butter naan. The naan was the best dish we ordered. While the presentation of the biryani was nice - the flavor was rather flat and blah. The Goan curry was harsh - you could taste the spices were raw and had a bitter after taste. The waiter said that this was a spicy dish - not at all ! It was so mild. The fish portion was rather small. The aloo gobi was slightly overcooked and a little too salty. The butter naan was great - fluffy and tasted great. Unfortunately we won't be coming back to this place.

We came on Saturday evening and they had just run out of biryani which made me SO sad but it's a good reason to come back! It's spacious with plenty of seating so would be great for bigger parties too. My bf has a nut allergy so we could only order the andhra chicken curry and the goat curry (which are the same, btw just different meats.) The flavor was truly flavor-ing, and it had just the right amount of kick. I loved the spiciness!! Only note, there were quite a bit of bones in both entrees and I'm taking off a star for this. In the chicken especially, it seemed there were more bones than actual meat which was sad because the chicken was SUPER tasty. Tender and juicy and held the curry just perfect. The naan was also delicious as I prefer a thinner, flakier naan and they delivered! Also you MUST get the mango lassi here, they didn't skimp on the mango and it's the perfect reprieve from the spicy meal Will definitely be back to try their biryanis.

At first I thought that tiffin will be enough for us but then my kids quickly gobbled the idli and mini dosa and wanted more. So I ordered another plate of only idlis( has 3 big soft fluffy ones) and also took advantage of the happy hour to order a masala dosa for me. I am not the kind of mom who eats kids leftovers all the time. So I wanted my own dosa. For drinks, I did a medium strong filter coffee ( they make it to your customization and I was surprised to see they even had jaggery). My 9 year old took a mango lassi. Food was incredibly satisfying. Servers are very attentive and they came three times to our table offering more chutney and sambhar. We already had enough but if you like more sambhar and chutney with your food, this is heaven. One server even came with ghee for my little ones for idlis. I was so grateful. He was genuinely sweet to my kid. Felt a connection than just a business! Ambiance is classy and relaxed at the same time. Nobody gave me the side eye when my three year old was a little noisy. Have a corner for takeout containers for leftover food, very generous. I would highly recommend this place for its delicious food, relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Prices are reasonable. They have happy hour daily from 3-6 pm and when we went at 5.30, the restaurant was more than 70% full on a Thursday. Eat early and save money too. We really had a very good time! PS- when you pay the bill ( you have to order and pay the bill before you eat at a room next to the dining area), do enter your phone number at the end and enroll in the loyalty program. The dosa is crisp and the fermented flavor is delicate. The filtered coffee is popular so I had to try it, and I love it. I'm not sure everyone would like it though. It's a strong coffee, slightly bitter even with sugar. The milk is poured with a long pull to create foam. The foam is light, not creamy or velvety like a latte. It's a very small portion in a small cup, and it's HOT, very HOT. I like it but I can see how other people might not. I was confused the first time I went in to eat because seating and ordering is not typical. When you first walk in, you go to the host and they'll give you a number then you walk to the room to your left to order and pay. You're given a chip if you order a coffee or tea and move over to the right. You give your chip to the person preparing the drinks for you. They ask your preference and hand over the very HOT drink. Then you sit at the table with your number on it. Your food is brought over fairly quickly. They bring extra sambar and chutney if needed, no extra charge. The dosa comes filled with turmeric spiced potato and on the side chutney (not my fave) and sambar which is so so good. You break a little dosa and dip and or scoop some of the sambar/ chutney. It's a casual setting and it gets pretty busy, especially on weekends. There are a ton of these types of restaurants and I'm pretty certain I've found the best one here!
