I've never tried Scandinavian food and so glad I got to try it here! I went for a brunch and got the savory porridge and banana bread pudding. The savory porridge was really filling and healthy! The experience was all too underwhelming-I arrived three hours after opening to a long line and a crowded dining room, so I was hoping Kantine wasn't one of those establishments where when they run out of pastries they are not going to make anymore. Thankfully as the line started to move, more pastries were brought out from the kitchen but even then the experience was about to become tumulous. First, I contacted Kantine via social media ahead of time to inquire about their weekend special berry and cream cheese pastry, but radio silence from there. Second, their website indicated they have their Lavendel Kaffe, however when I tried to order this, I saw they had drew a black line over the price. When I eventually asked the barista, he told me they ran out of their lavender syrup and eventually crossed out the whole line on the menu. The tebirkes is a standout, and I would go back to try their Cardamom Morning Bun and hopefully their Lavendel Kaffe but I'm not a fan of their dining area. They try to fit as many tables, so it feels very cramped and is a safety hazard especially when walking to the back left corner to place dirty dishes in the tub, wait for the bathroom, or fill your water cup up. read more

The first thing you notice is how beautiful the space is and how the light from the windows brightens up the interior. Immediately there's a sense of coziness (unless of course you're on the weekend busy brunch crunch time). Got to come here on a quiet Tuesday morning and ordered the Lavendel Kaffe and Breakfast Board (5 items). My breakfast board consisted of: 1. Danish sprouted rye bread 2. Runny organic egg, creamy spinach 3. Curried Pickled Herring 4. Beet Hummus 5. Citrus Salad Note that the breakfast board changes daily so certain items might not be available when you come. And you can get either 5 or 7 items. Like everyone else on Yelp I have to say the beet hummus was really delightful. Flavors for the hummus were subtle and it was lighter than the usual hummus. Flavor wise I really enjoyed the citrus salad. It was sweet and tangy and I could see it pairing well in a dessert or something more savory. The lavendel kaffe came in a small cup (probably a little larger than an espresso cup). It wasn't too sweet though now that I'm writing this review I'm not sure how much lavender was present. If you're able to come on the weekday, I highly advise to come M-F. If you're coming on Sat/Sun just be warned that there might be a large crowd for brunch. read more

I stopped by recently for lunch, and got a scandwich with the rye bun and their chicken salad. Overall, it was decent, but the rye bun was too dense for me. It felt like I was chewing through a solid block. The bun had plenty of seeds and grains mixed in, which was flavorful! The chicken salad itself was good, but the proportion of salad vs. the dense bun was a bit lacking. The overall portion itself was also a bit disappointing; I had to order a few eggs on the side to fill me up. The ambience is quite nice though! There's plenty of outside seating, which makes for a great lunch spot on a sunny weekend day. Date day with the hubs and decided to check out Kantine as it's been on my list of places to try. We were able to find parking easily and there were plenty of tables open when we arrived at around 10am on Friday. Many different items to choose from and can't say I've tried Scandinavian food before. We each ordered the 5-item boards so we could try a bit of everything. Also ordered the Cardamom morning bun and Lavender kaffe given the reviews. From all the items ordered, we liked the trout salad (extra $3). Not overly fishy - tasty. The melon with mint terragon sugar was refreshing. If anyone remembers the Fruitstripe gum (the one with the zebra on the packaging - not sure if it's around anymore), the melon tasted just like that. Yogurt was on the tart side and the toppings didn't help to cut the tartness really. Nothing special about the eggs or bacon. The chocolate in the sweet porridge was subtle and not too sweet. As for the lavender kaffe - pretty presentation but couldn't really taste the lavender. To me, just tasted like a regular latte. However, the flavor of the cardamom in the morning bun really shone through and it was flaky. Plenty big for the hubs and I to share. May not look like a lot of food at first glance, but it was filling. Everything was nicely presented. Cute little local coffee shop in SF. The vibe is minimal yet chic. Lots of seats to dine with outdoor seating as well. I had their Roasted Carrot Hummus Scandwich. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and it's dog friendly. The last time I came here was over a year ago. We came around noon on the weekend and waited in line for at least 30 minutes. We got here around 1pm on a Sunday, and there were a few empty tables both indoors and outdoors. The line to order was quick but the food took a while. It's cafe style: you order at the counter and get a number, and they bring the food out to your table once it's ready. They had breakfast items on the menu as well as pastries (which you just had to order through the display window). They were nearly sold out of most of the pastries at around 1pm. I ordered the brunch plate and was able to substitute the soft boiled egg with a scrambled egg. I think their menu has changed because it's different from how I remembered it. In addition to an egg, yogurt, jam, cheese, and bread, we also got two tiny pieces of lettuce on the plate, which seemed a bit random (honestly wasn't sure if you were meant to eat it as a salad - because it's too little to be a salad - or with something else). Really liked the yogurt but my friend found it too sour (it tasted like the ones with no added sugar that you can get in stores). Paired well with the jam though. Everything tasted very healthy and rustic, but I would not say it was rich in flavors or the best brunch food I've had in SF. But I think that's understandable; that type of food is typically rich in fat and sugar, and this is not. I can see the hype, but it's also pretty pricey because of how small the servings are. I've been hearing about Kantine for a while now so I was very excited to finally try it! My partner and I visited on a Sunday morning and were immediately impressed by two things - the number of options and the fact that there were open tables (weekend brunch in SF is no joke). I was originally planning on ordering a pastry, but ended up going savory and ordering the Scandi Sampler with Swedish flatbread. The Sampler was delicious and came with several different components making it very well balanced. It was fun tasting all the different pieces - separately and together. Stopped Kantine to try their seasonal Semla as well as their popular Cinnamon Knot. They are a neat little cafe that serves Scandinavian inspired foods! Their Semla is a Swedish bun with almond paste and a whipped cream topping (not to mention the cute little triangle hat haha). I think the cardamom is not my favorite flavor profile but I really enjoyed the experience. The bun was super soft and the cream was very light while the paste in the center added a nice touch of sweetness. The cinnamon knot was super yummy as it had a nice cinnamon flavor that was not too sweet or overpowering. What really sells this place is the fact that they make everything from scratch! The bacon was super unique and delicious, so when I learned that they make it in house, I was super impressed. They've recently changed up their menu to prioritize food that doesn't take too long to prepare, which means no more open faced sandwiches or brunch boards. Instead they've added some pre-prepared "scandwiches" to their display, while keeping their grovbirkes sandwich, porridges, and salad. I tried a tuna scandwich and wasn't impressed - it just felt pre-prepared and didn't have the freshness of a sandwich made on the spot. Scandinavian restaurants are few and far between even in culinary diverse Bay Area. So it was a bit of a coincidence, I found out about Kantine SF the day after Pläj announced their permanent closure. Not wanting to waste any time, despite a rough morning, on our next free day, just 2 days later, we arrived at Kantine for their 7 item brunch board (that you can choose from a selection of 13), savory porridge, and an open faced sandwich. With the exception of just 1 item from the brunch board, the housemade hay smoke cheese with rye crackers, I would get everything else again, it was so flavorful. The housemade hay smoke cheese with rye crackers was like Creme fraiche so just didn't have the flavor bomb as the other items. My top three items in that brunch board is that soft boiled egg, the fig and bacon, and the trout salad. However with the ever changing seasonal menu, the fig and bacon is probably only a one time deal. The savory porridge may seem a bit pricey at $13 to start (add runny egg, and/or crispy bacon bits is $2 more each) but it was absolutely delicious on its own. We just went with the base and sprinkled some of the bacon from our bacon and fig for an extra flavor boost. We actually did not intend on getting an open faced sandwich since it is meant to be a light meal but when I saw the pork liver pate, I knew I had to add one to the order. The pork liver pâté was almost fluffy in texture vs. dense and when paired with cremini mushrooms and crispy bacon, mindblowing!! I would love to see more single tables and cozy seating so introverts like me don't feel awkward having to share tables. It is really hard to sit and pass by another person while trying to sit with how many chairs are there and the tight spacing. Overall a lovely unique dining experience that I will frequent often. Kantine is one of my new favorite spots in SF. This Scandinavian restaurant serves a variety of items from pastries to porridge bowls to "build-your-own-brunch" options. The first time I came here I ordered the savory grain porridge which is a 3-grain porridge with asparagus, kale, and farmers cheese. You can choose to add a runny egg and crispy bacon bits as well if you would like for an extra charge. (I came to Kantine on an empty stomach and did not know that they serve a pretty large serving, which is by no means a bad thing). This porridge is so good! I had no idea that asparagus and farmers cheese work so well in a porridge. I also ordered their yogurt bowl because once again I had no idea how much all that food would be. The yogurt bowl was creamy and moderately sweet from the berry purée and tangy from what I think were sea buckthorns. Moved to an apt around the corner just a few months ago and had always seen this place but just had the chance to check it out this week. The place is such a lovely little urban oasis, stepping off of Market Street which can be a little bleak right now. There are tables outside but we sat indoors. It's got tall ceilings and bright and airy -- yaaas! We tried a salad and a savory porridge - wow they're GORGEOUS, to start. They felt really cozy and healthy and light all at the same time. The nutty Grovbirkes and the cardamom morning bun were awesome too, and very sizable. I especially appreciated the morning bun for its generous cardamom flavor and it wasn't cloyingly sweet either.
