I believe it's $16 for 5 or $21 for 7 items. What a fun idea! The experience and vibe was definitely fun, but I'm not sure anything on the brunch board really stood out to me as exceptionally delicious. It was all good and I enjoyed it, but nothing I would rave about. The carrots were nicely coooked and the watermelon was fresh. I would come here for the vibe, but maybe would stick to a pastry and coffee next time instead of getting the board. I also had the asparagus savory porridge which unfortunately was pretty bland and lacked salt & flavor. But.. I felt healthy and light! Popular brunch spot on the edge of Hayes Valley specializing in Scandinavian dishes. The interior is light, bright, and modern. Kantine is a great spot to visit on a sunny day, as they have a bunch of tables for outdoor seating. It gets pretty busy during weekend brunch, but tables turnover pretty quickly. My friend and I split a lingonberry pastry, and it was delicious and fresh with great flaky layers! They have a great assortment of pastries, all of which looked delicious. I also ordered the sweet porridge. It had miso caramelized bananas, and was chocolatey, warm, and filling. I was apparently living under a rock - and a few blocks from Kantine - but just discovered it last weekend. I went two days in a row. First of all, I really enjoyed the ambiance! They have a very chilled out, aesthetically pleasing interior and have lots of outdoors seating under a tree, which was perfect on the sunny day I visited. The food is served in almost Japanese style plating I'd say, it's really cute and picturesque! The food itself: coffee is Great! I tried both their iced and hot lattes, would grab those again, any day! The yogurt was really good, healthy, a good mix of granola, sweet and savory, and fruity. The tomato tart was amazing! It is herby and juicy from the tomatoes, the pastry was fresh and herby! Loved it. The brunch board: I really enjoyed the variety and portions. Their house made cheese is soft and creamy, it was perfect on the rye bread. The eggs were perfect! Soft scrambled like you'd want them. The smoked trout was delicious! Way better than I'd imagined. Cannot go wrong with watermelon, ever! Price point: The board is $17 + taxes. Even given SF prices and the recent inflation, the brunch order of two boards with 5 items each and 2 coffees came down to $65 with minimum tip, which is pretty expensive. One of the most unique brunch spots I've come across! Come early as you have to wait in line to order and then they will bring out your food. I got the build-your-own-brunch and enjoyed the porridge sourdough bread, bacon, herring (really great!), yogurt (nice and slightly tart), and citrus salad (very fresh). Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning around 10:45AM with a friend. We had to order first and then seat ourselves, but there was a good amount of space available even on a Sunday. I ordered the savory porridge with a soft boiled egg, which was really filling but not too heavy; I did have to add a lot of salt since there wasn't much seasoning otherwise but I thought the mushrooms were really well cooked. We also tried two pastries - one was essentially an almond croissant and the other was an artichoke and goat cheese pastry. Loved this little spot! Kantine is right off of market street, and I may have missed it if I hadn't come looking for it based on the many raving reviews I've heard. As we ate each item on the brunch plate, we kept asking re-evaluating which item was our favorite -- they were all so good! But I am aware that many places in Europe basically call carbonated lemon flavored drinks, lemonade. It was ok, but not what I was hoping for, I feel they need to clarify with a better description. Very fresh not-at-all fishy shrimpy shrimps. A dab of mayo to add some creaminess, but not overpower. And a great herbal dill note. Scandinavian Meatball, Remoulade: Nicely spiced meatballs. Seemed more like Middle Eastern kofta than IKEA Swedish meatballs. The sauce reminded me of the curry flavor in (non-Indian) chicken curry salad. I had an unpleasant dine-in because the business was not upfront about their menu prices and I was shocked at the counter (but too late to do anything). Here is my experience on a Sunday morning: We arrive shortly after opening and get in line. I look around for a paper menu or something similar but find nothing. I see a list of food items written messily on a board on the wall (but no prices), so I squint and manage to make a few decisions. We reach the counter and quickly order (conscious that there's a long line behind us) and the person at the cashier states our surprisingly high total as she turns the POS system towards us for tip. Shocked, I add tip and walk away towards a seat, wondering how a simple breakfast turned out so expensive. Later on, I realized their board charged additional fees depending on what items you chose, and then there was the SF mandate fee. I just wish they were more transparent. This makes me hate eating out in SF. read more

This place is amazing - everything I've had here has been delicious, fresh, and made with love. My favorite is the kale mushroom bowl...I am willing to drive all the way into the city to get one for lunch. The pastries are to die for, and the brunch board has so many yummy choices, it's really difficult to decide on just 7 items. They also make cakes, which I tried for the first time when I pre-ordered one for Christmas. It's thick and moist and there's grains and there were two slices, perfect for sharing. - the sausage. We selected sausage over bacon and it was gamey, having complex flavors all at once. I am attending a training and in our 45 min lunch break I wanted to try them out, it's in the same house. But when I get it all together and was about to order (40 min left for my break) I was smart enough to ask them how long it would take to get food out. Well it was said it take at least 40 min. Wow. So I ended up with a fresh pastry, wish was definitely five star and an ice tea. Since it has bergamot tea it wasn't mine but that fine. So a out this place is it is Scandinavian you pick out of a list of about 15 items 5 ($15) or 7 ($ 19) items and they bring it to your table. It is a typical smõrgāsbord (coldcut plate and Abendbrot) situation. A bit what we Europeans love. So I'll have to come back some day when I have more time to Check it out. So why do I decided to go for a neutral rating instead of a five star that the pastry deserve? I left hungry, had no time to go elsewhere and had a sweet pastry instead of a healthy meal (wish Scandinavian food easily provides). And I think they should be able to serve there customers in a faster way then "at least" 40 minutes. First time having a Scandinavian breakfast. The menu is simple and clean. Love the aesthetic and atmosphere of inside. Great place for an intimate brunch with friends/family. Food does take a while, waited over 20 mins for mine and the waiter said that it takes 25-30 mins to prep each meal. So I would order quickly if you are low on time. We went around 11 on a Saturday (aka prime brunch). Would recommend to come in earlier or after because the l line does get long. Perfect mix of trout, seasoned potatoes, dill cream sauce, radishes, red onions, and roe. The portion is really small for $18. Grovbirkes Sandwich - Simple breakfast sandwich with egg, ham, havarti cheese, and a Danish pastry. It makes me so sad to write this review, Kantine has been our favorite brunch place in SF for the past year, but our experience today was disappointing. I was saddened to hear they no longer have the brunch boards where you could choose your own items - the sampler they replaced it just isn't the same. They also got rid of their open faced sandwiches, replaced with much smaller sandwiches. They also didn't have the pickled herring, which was one of our favorites. Today we had the sweet porridge, which was tasty but would've liked more fruit, the peach danish which was great, and a deli container of trout salad which is always great. In summary, I think we'd go back, but with tempered expectations now that we're aware of the new menu. read more

I was so excited to try this place! My friend invited me to their pop-up brunch, where the head chef was testing out different recipes. Can you say, open faced sandwiches galore? That food was impressive, so I expected nothing less coming to the new brick & mortar location. It was a lot to take in on a Sunday morning. The place was jam-packed, and I'm thrilled that they have so much business. It was my friend's birthday, and he had staked out a small portion of a tall, communal table. Late-comers had to find a different spot. We ordered at the register, and I opted for the brunch board, selecting a few things I thought sounded tasty. The food took awhile to be prepared, probably because it was so busy, but the wait was worth it. Seedy bread with butter, cheese, eggs, and bacon... a fun Scandinavian twist on an American classic. I wasn't a huge fan of some items like the cheese, but it brought back good memories of the pop-up event. This is one of my friend's favorite places to eat and hang out, and I'd honestly only go if he was there. I'd like to try a few other things on their menu for lunch, and perhaps I'll head there on a weekday and hope that it's less crowded. Overall I'm glad I finally visited! read more

Very homey. I wonder how authentic this is in terms of Northern European food. Nonetheless, pleasant brunch experience & will keep bookmarked for future visits. My friend and I arrived around 1. Parking wasn't difficult, plenty of spots along the alleys intersecting Market St. We each ordered their popular brunch board-- a platter of six small dishes chosen from a rotating list of items. A bit late in the day, but it's always a good time for brunch food ^.^ Here are the six dishes I chose: RUNNY ORGANIC EGG, CREAMY SPINACH: The runniest yolk nestled in the plumpest little egg! I loved the purée. This was like a soup that would have been lovely with toast-- though it was one of the platter options, my friend and I couldn't justify spending $3 on bread. Tragic! Regretted it after having my first bite, it would have been magical. PINK BAY SHRIMP, EGG AND DILL: I think this is similar to ceviche, has a slight acidity to the seasoning? I don't know. But I do know that it was tasty. SWEET MELON WITH TARRAGON AND MINT: Strange how a simple addition of tarragon would liven up watermelon! Deliciously flavorful and unique. HOUSEMADE YOGURT, MASHED BERRIES, CHAMOMILE GRANOLA: Loved the housemade yogurt-- unsweetened but paired well with the berries. Chamomile wasn't as notable because of the overpowering fruit flavor, but I'm not one to complain about a parfait. HAY-SMOKED CHEESE, CHANTERELLE AND CHARRED CORN: Light & fluffy cheese with subtle earthy aroma... Was divine with the juicy corn and chanterelle. Someone else mentioned that the ambiance is "light and airy"-- couldn't have put it better myself. We enjoyed the soft indie music coupled with modern decor. Loved it.
