My ideal rating for Kantine is a 4.5, with the pastries being the positive contributor and the cafe food menu being the more negative contributor. Overall, it's a solid experience, and I do think pastries are a must if you want to have the best time. I've been here twice now with friends after seeing it consistently popping on the weekends. My first time around, we got the wild salmon bowl, the yogurt bowl, and some pastry that I can't fully recall. Things were good/mid, for lack of a better term. The salmon bowl was definitely fresh, and the flavors meshed well, but I felt I could pull off the same thing at home pretty easily. Most of all, the portion was quite small for the price. My friend enjoyed her yogurt bowl, but the yogurt:topping ratio felt pretty imbalanced to me. One of my peeves with cafe yogurt bowls is when there is simply too much yogurt. It's so important to have a good amount of texture so that you're not left just eating tart glop (mind you, I love yogurt). The pastry we had was completely fine. I can't even remember it, so I wouldn't recommend it. The second time around, things were much better. For one, I was able to get the cardamom bun, which I know is the thing to get. I also got the Kolasnittar and the smashed chickpea spread sandwich. I was a bit skeptical, but that cardamom bun is bomb. A really gorgeous, buttery, pillowy texture, lightly crisp exterior, sweet but not too sweet, beautiful aroma, beautiful in general. Like everyone else, I would definitely recommend. The Kolasnittar was quite yummy as well! I love ginger, and I felt the cookie had a good mix of crunch and chew. The sandwich had the makings of being good, but that bread... is for a certain palate. It's super seedy, hearty, and hard, and also kind of dry. The sandwich filling was nice overall. I wouldn't have been mad at more salt and/or tang, but the bread was the biggest detractor. That being said, it definitely felt healthy and like it would keep me regular lol. So there's that. I have yet to order a housemade drink from them, but they look great. I will also say the other pastries they have look amazing. I'll probably stick more to those two categories in the future!
first time to kantine! While walking around the city Actually would've never noticed it had we been walking by it? But we wondered what all the commotion was outside of the establishment And lone behold it was brunch. I ended up getting a few pastries here. A little too sweet to my liking, but now I can say I can try it. The service here was not bad, the line moved pretty quick for a weekend café

Kantine is such a cute, fun brunch spot. There is a good amount of seating inside and outside, you pay at the counter and they bring the food/drinks to you, and you bus your own tables afterwards. We got there before the line started, but it seems they get very busy on the weekends around 11am ish. The coffee was yummy and strong and the cardamom knot was delicious. The brunch plate was fun, but my favorite thing was definitely the jam. The rye was seedier than I was used to, the cheese wasn't super sharp and the yogurt was a bit boring so I would probably try something new next time. Still, a very fun experience and I'll be back!
Scandinavian pastry is high on my radar these days. I'm tired of croissants. Give me cardamom pastries! Poppy seeded pastry. That's why I am SO excited by Kantine. It is in the middle of Upper Market near the Old Mint. Some savvy folks know about it and go for their brunch. Porridge? Soft cooked eggs? Pastries...yup, I'll go for these! Service was calm & steady and went pretty quickly. Charming, calm ambiance early in the morning. Seats outside on Market Street go quickly. I bought a cardamom morning bun. A bit too Sugary sweet...but Deliciously scented and crispy outer shell yet moist inside. I also could not pass up their savory pain suisse with veggies inside. Buttery flaky pastry with a savory filling...so delicious! I'll be back again soon to try more!
I love to try unique cafes and this Scandinavian one is a little gem! The atmosphere is bright and airy, and although there's a line, it moves quickly. With every item in the pastry shelf looking absolutely amazing, it was hard to decide! We ended up ordering the cardamom knot which I thought was delicious and perfectly fluffy. We also ordered the lox bagel sandwich which hit the spot. While eating, my food envy led me to ask the table next to me about their egg sandwich which looked fantastic too. It's called the Grovbirkes sandwich, so I'm adding that to my order for next time! Seating can be hard to find on a weekend to be honest but may have opened up if we lingered for a while. We ended up sitting in a cozy bench corner which was fine but would have been hard to eat a larger meal. Go check it out :)
Kantine is a charming and unique spot in the Duboce Triangle area. I went in on a Saturday morning at about 10am and it was pretty crowded. Outside was full and there was a couple spots inside that I had to snag pretty quickly. But there's a reason they are so busy, the food is absolutely spectacular. I got the cardamom bun which is one of my favorite Nordic pastries and it was just as I remembered it. Super flavorful, very soft, just an incredible pastry. I had it with coffee too which was also delicious. My friend got the yoghurt which was thick and flavorful and topped with unique toppings and a delicious apple sauce. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu. Definitely a new go-to place in the city for me.
not a single miss here, everything is filling and appetizing. I love the fresh and tangy flavor profiles of my favorite things here like the yogurt and the seeded rye bread. It's a good price point as well. The service is at the kiosk and you order after viewing the display and menu. it's usually quiet on weekdays and busier on weekends but ambiance is casual and simple.
I've had Kantine on my want-to-go list for such a long time, and I finally checked it off over the weekend with my friend. We stopped by for a round of cinnamon knots and enjoyed them fresh outside in the pleasant weather. The pastries were lightly sweet with a pretty soft chew despite the browned exterior. I thought there were salt crystals on top of the buns, but it turned out to be a type of sugar. It's kind of hard to accurately critique this place after only sampling one item, but for my first time, between the cinnamon knot and chill environment, it was a 4/5 experience. Next time I'd like to branch out and try one of the savory dishes.
A very stylish spot to meet friends or hang out for a few hours. The staff was lovely, the interior and exterior seating was plentiful, and there were so many tasty looking things on the menu! I ended up having their salmon bowl, an iced tea, and a cardamom bun and everything was tasty and refreshing, if a bit small portioned given the price. Pros: - very tasty food with fresh ingredients - cardamom bun was slightly sticky and spiced with a hint of sweetness, perfect in my opinion - plentiful, nice seating - in an area with street parking a block or two away Cons: - on the more expensive side - small portions - limited gluten free selection
Went here on a Sunday morning to enjoy a brunch. There was a bit of a line, but it was a really nice day so one of us grabbed a table outside and the other one ordered. We went with the brunch plate with sourdough, the shrimp salad smorebrod and a cardamom knot. Also got some orange juice and a cafe latte. We really liked the cardamom knot. Very light and flavorful, not as heavy as a an American cinnamon bun. I also enjoyed the smorebrod with the shrimp salad. Bread was great and good portion of the salad. The brunch plate was also a good mixture of jam, cheese, butter, yoghurt and some nice bread. Some of the other sandwiches also looked great and the pastries as well. Would definitely be back and check out more of their offerings. Staff were super nice.
Deliciousness all around! We ordered the Savory Porridge, Trout Scandwich, Golden Klint drink and the Choux bun! I've never had savory porridge in this way - with grains, mushroom, kale and cheese but all the flavors worked so well together and was a light clean dish! The Trout Scandwich was also super tasty with the crispy sprouted rye buns and flavorful cream cheese, purple onions and trout! I ordered the Golden Klint with oat milk and it was such a warm and cozy drink which reminded me a bit like eggnog flavor! The choux bun had the perfect amount of cream and crispy so chefs kiss! Service was quick and servers were very attentive. The only downside would probably be the lack of seating sometimes especially on a busy Sunday but people were nice to share tables with us! Will definitely stop by again to try the rest of the menu :)
We ordered the $40 cookie box for Christmas Eve and it was just OK. The display was really pretty and the cookies looked nice, but the only ones we really liked were the butter wreaths. We did appreciate the service as they were ready when we asked for them to be ready because you had to pre-order them.

I was apparently living under a rock - and a few blocks from Kantine - but just discovered it last weekend. I went two days in a row. First of all, I really enjoyed the ambiance! They have a very chilled out, aesthetically pleasing interior and have lots of outdoors seating under a tree, which was perfect on the sunny day I visited. The food is served in almost Japanese style plating I'd say, it's really cute and picturesque! The food itself: coffee is Great! I tried both their iced and hot lattes, would grab those again, any day! The yogurt was really good, healthy, a good mix of granola, sweet and savory, and fruity. The tomato tart was amazing! It is herby and juicy from the tomatoes, the pastry was fresh and herby! Loved it. The brunch board: I really enjoyed the variety and portions. Their house made cheese is soft and creamy, it was perfect on the rye bread. The eggs were perfect! Soft scrambled like you'd want them. The smoked trout was delicious! Way better than I'd imagined. Cannot go wrong with watermelon, ever! Price point: The board is $17 + taxes. Even given SF prices and the recent inflation, the brunch order of two boards with 5 items each and 2 coffees came down to $65 with minimum tip, which is pretty expensive. So I'd keep this place for special occasions or when I really feel like treating myself! read more
I went to Kantine when they opened at 9AM on a Saturday to grab a tea with a friend. The space is Scandinavian modern and is very comfy, though the seating options are a bit odd for groups of 2. I ordered the goat cheese and artichoke pastry and a peppermint tea and LOVED it so much I came back the next day for breakfast. I ordered the poppy seed almond pastry, the beef Frank pastry and the breakfast sandwich with havarti (my boyfriend got ham and cheese). I loved everything but I actually think the sandwich would be better without cheese. The wait at 9:30 on Sunday was pretty bad though, the line moves so slowly but all in all I loved it! read more

Not ridiculously sweet. Herby flavor, but the cardamom wasn't too easy to identify. Crunchy layers with a soft doughy core. Great pastry fundamentals. A standard cinnabun version of this would be a 5/5. (3.7/5) Bear Claw: A solid pastry with standard flavors. A well executed sugary bear claw. Good buttery/flaky layers like all the other pasties. A safe order. (2/5) Brunch Board - Runny Organic Egg: SKIP. Bland soft-boiled egg. Great runny yolk in a green sauce. Lacked a strong flavor. Really tasted like a soft-boiled egg in some olive oil. - McFarland smoked trout salad: Average. Tasted like a fresh version of grocery story tuna salad. Very cucumber forward. Refreshing, but nothing special. - Bacon: Nothing special. Not particularly crispy. Its bacon. - Lentil Hummus: Above average. Probably one of the stronger brunch board items. - Rye Bread: OKAY. Great seeds + nuts ratio mixed in. Relatively neutral flavor. Slices were small. Not enough to spread/dip with the rest of the board. Needed 2 orders. This place used to be one of my favorites but they got rid of the brunch board. I loved that breakfast set and would get it every time. I was super excited to come here again for that specific item so i was extremely disappointed when I got here. I'm curious as to what they're thinking getting rid of it. I ended up getting the trout sandwich and it was decent. My friend got the sampler. It didn't meet expectations I would not get it again. And I'm unsure if I'd even come here again now. If anyone wants to get something similar le marais has something similar in concept and items to the brunch board here. Kantines was my favorite though and will be missed severely read more
Popular brunch spot with long lines, but solid food. Came here a couple weekends ago for brunch and had the Kale and Mushroom Bowl and Almond Pastry. Kale bowl was exactly what I needed! Fresh kale with hearty mushrooms, yum! Almond Pastry was also tasty. Not too sweet and with a nice filling. Pastry was a bit dry though and I would've loved a bit more paste. Service took ages, but they were busy so makes sense. Kantine didn't wow me this time, but it was a solid option and I'll have to come back and try some of their other brunch dishes! read more
EVENT: just catching up with my girl before going to work! Sat outdoors... staff were friendly! FOOD: we both got the same thing! Good friends think alike! - Pork sausage plate: juicy sausage and with tons of perfectly cooked potatoes.. dip it in some of their white sauce.. WOW~ One of my favorite part.. is the salad! OMG I LOVE the salad that comes with the food! It hits every little taste bud!! - Mocha... as always... is such a treat. I wish they warmed up the milk a little bite more.. became cold very quick. OVERALL: I love everything about this place.. will come back for their salad! read more

Loved this little spot! Kantine is right off of market street, and I may have missed it if I hadn't come looking for it based on the many raving reviews I've heard. My friend and I shared a 7 item brunch plate, a couple of pastries, and a latte. Both pastries were good, but our favorite was the strawberry Danish. As we ate each item on the brunch plate, we kept asking re-evaluating which item was our favorite -- they were all so good! If I had to choose, I really loved the scrambled eggs and the lentil hummus the most. Honestly though, all 7 dishes were awesome and portions sizes were larger than we expected. Another person in our group got the savory porridge, which was also fantastic. Everything tasted extremely hearty and fresh. On top of that, the prices were reasonable and I love that you can choose to have a lighter meal since the small plates can be ordered individually too. While there are several tables outside and inside, it does get fairly crowded on weekends around brunch time. Totally understand why this place is so popular -- will definitely be coming back! read more
Adorable little space in the lower height upper market area. Bright and clean Scandinavian touches around the restaurant. I suggest to use the menu behind the counter for a better break down than the paper one. It's more detailed if you're j to building your own brunch board. Put together: Brunch board (get to mix and match ~5-7 items, from 9AM-2:30PM ONLY) - Curried marinated herring, capers, apples - Soft scrambled egg fresh herbs - Lamb meatballs, remoulade - Rye porridge, fig preserved, cream - Rye crackers Smorrebrod - hard boiled egg + pink bay shrimp, mayo, dill (sourdough) Porridge: - kale, mushroom, soft farmers cheese, soft boiled egg Organic strawberry lemonade - refreshingly sweet and sour My favorite was the shrimp bread and the lamb meatballs. All others were nice to experiment. The porridge was also good, never had it in that consistency. Perfect place to catch up with a friend and experiment new things! read more
I love fast/fine casual joints and this place did not disappoint. Sleek modern atmosphere and delicious food. I especially love the Scandinavian bento style of ordering 5 or 7 items on a brunch plate. Strawberry Lemonade: Didn't seem like lemonade. Was more like strawberry infused Sprite / 7-Up. But I am aware that many places in Europe basically call carbonated lemon flavored drinks, lemonade. It was ok, but not what I was hoping for, I feel they need to clarify with a better description. Danish Sprouted Rye Bread: Very hearty! It was like eating a bunch of different seeds glued together with a little a bit of bread. Great with just butter. Also paired well with the creamy spinach & runny egg dish. Swedish Rye Crisp: Much much lighter than the Danish Rye. Basically like a vinyl record shaped cracker. Worked nicely with lighter items like the bay shrimp. Runny Organic Egg, Creamy Spinach: Who knew an egg could be so tasty? Perfectly poached with a custardy yolk center. This must have been sous vide cooked because it was so perfect. And the spinach is very smooth, like a purée, and packed with flavor. Maybe my favorite dish, but that's a tough call. Kantine's Spiced Bacon: Seemed like regular old thick cut bacon to me. I'm a bit spoiled with Billionaire's Bacon around town. Pink Bay Shrimp, Dill, Mayo: Simple, but delicious. Very fresh not-at-all fishy shrimpy shrimps. A dab of mayo to add some creaminess, but not overpower. And a great herbal dill note. Scandinavian Meatball, Remoulade: Nicely spiced meatballs. Seemed more like Middle Eastern kofta than IKEA Swedish meatballs. The sauce reminded me of the curry flavor in (non-Indian) chicken curry salad. Buttermilk Soup, Peach Jam, Sea Buckthorn, Cardamon Scented Cookies: A very indulgent dessert. Basically a bunch of peach jam underneath a bunch of cream. Never had buckthorn before; the berries looked like pomegranate seeds but tasted kinda bland. read more
This place has an awesome ambiance and is just super unique within the SF brunch scene! I enjoyed having the 5 dish brunch board with the runny egg, dumpling, trout salad, hummus, and the rye. The standouts were the dumpling and the runny egg since the dumpling had a ton of flavor and was crunchy in texture. The runny egg was so milky and creamy and I enjoyed the taste as well! We dined indoors and the service took a while but we got our food in 15 or so minutes and it was quite fresh! Would come back. read more
I came in around 11am Sunday morning and was able to order some pastries to go. If I had wanted to stay, there were tables available. At the same time, the environment could use a little warmth - maybe plants - just to make it more cozy. Pastries - My favorite of the four we tried is the cardamom morning bun, though the others are good. Looking forward to going back to eat the savory dishes I saw others enjoying. read more
Are you bored of the standard breakfast fare? Wanting to try something unique and memorable? Stop looking and eat here! We have never tried Scandinavian food and found it to be uniquely delicious. The brunch board pick 5 was great to try a smattering of different items. Food was filling but not heavy or greasy. The presentation was a feast for the eyes. Staff was very pleasant. My Americano coffee was smooth not bitter (Heart roasters coffee from Portland OR) My advice is to get more bread, there was so many tasty items to spread on the bread and two slices were not enough. Didn't get to try the beautiful pastries (as we were sadly too full) so will definitely return. read more
Once you get Scandinavian brunch, then Eggs Benedict just won't do it for you anymore. One Saturday morning, I made the 30-minute walk to Kantine to meet a friend for brunch. There wasn't much seating, but we found two seats at a communal table. If you're like me and are indecisive over menus and like getting a lot of things, the brunch board is for you. We shared the seven-item breakfast board. Some of my favorites from the board were - the runny egg. It was rich, creamy, and had a large yolk. - the porridge. It was dark which was surprising, and looked kinda weird, but tasted better than most oatmeal. - the Danish rye bread. It's thick and moist and there's grains and there were two slices, perfect for sharing. - the sausage. We selected sausage over bacon and it was gamey, having complex flavors all at once. Overall, it reminded me of Frozen! It's fun, unique, and a better deal than regular brunch. I felt like I could take on the world afterwards instead of wanting to nap my day away. read more
I really like to love this place. And I am struggling if I give em five stars or a mediocre/neutral three stars. Why? I am attending a training and in our 45 min lunch break I wanted to try them out, it's in the same house. But when I get it all together and was about to order (40 min left for my break) I was smart enough to ask them how long it would take to get food out. Well it was said it take at least 40 min. Wow. So I ended up with a fresh pastry, wish was definitely five star and an ice tea. Since it has bergamot tea it wasn't mine but that fine. So a out this place is it is Scandinavian you pick out of a list of about 15 items 5 ($15) or 7 ($ 19) items and they bring it to your table. It is a typical smõrgāsbord (coldcut plate and Abendbrot) situation. A bit what we Europeans love. So I'll have to come back some day when I have more time to Check it out. So why do I decided to go for a neutral rating instead of a five star that the pastry deserve? I left hungry, had no time to go elsewhere and had a sweet pastry instead of a healthy meal (wish Scandinavian food easily provides). And I think they should be able to serve there customers in a faster way then "at least" 40 minutes. But as said at least it all looked so good that I'll have to come back and hopefully add up two more stars. read more

I really enjoyed brunch here! It was healthy and light, but the downside is it wasn't too filling. Food tends to err on the side of plain & straightforward - we said it was the IKEA of brunch restaurants! THE WAIT: None for four on a Saturday at 9:30am, though we grabbed the last table available. It got crazy busy between maybe 10 and 11am with a line, but then slowed down significantly again around 11:30am, with several empty tables by noon. THE COST: $55.78 for 1 board, 1 plate, 1 latte, and 1 pastry - a light brunch for two. MUST-HAVES: Tebirkes pastry! And for the plates, I liked the Havarti (porridge) the most. My partner doesn't usually like porridge but actually enjoyed this. THE FOOD: * Cappuccino ($4) - 4 stars Good! Thick, frothy. * Roast Beef open face sandwich ($13) - 3.5 stars I didn't expect a cold sandwich, but still had hearty fresh meat. Bread was a bit stale. Overall a very small dish! * Tebirkes (Poppy seed almond danish $4.50) - 5 stars This was amazing. The dough was super soft and fresh, and the filling perfection. * Board (7 items $19, trout +$3) * Scrambled egg - 3.5 stars. Soft, but plain. * Trout - 3 stars. Similar to tuna salad. Just not for me. * Sausage - 3 stars. Hearty, interesting textures, but hard and dry. * Havarti (porridge) - 4.5 stars. Lightly sweet, complex flavors. Great! * Avocado - 4 stars. Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning around 10:45AM with a friend. We had to order first and then seat ourselves, but there was a good amount of space available even on a Sunday. I ordered the savory porridge with a soft boiled egg, which was really filling but not too heavy; I did have to add a lot of salt since there wasn't much seasoning otherwise but I thought the mushrooms were really well cooked. We also tried two pastries - one was essentially an almond croissant and the other was an artichoke and goat cheese pastry. Both were amazing and I would definitely want to try the rest of their pastry selection in the future. Highly recommend for a casual breakfast/brunch!! read more
Great brunch spot! My husband and I came here a few times since it's walking distance from our place. The grovbirkes sandwich is amazing! The super flaky grovbirkes bun, ham, melted cheese, and scrambled eggs is the perfect combo. The interior is bright and sunny! You'll have to order at the counter and then pick a seat - they have both indoor and outdoor seating available. First time having a Scandinavian breakfast. The menu is simple and clean. Love the aesthetic and atmosphere of inside. Great place for an intimate brunch with friends/family. Food does take a while, waited over 20 mins for mine and the waiter said that it takes 25-30 mins to prep each meal. So I would order quickly if you are low on time. We went around 11 on a Saturday (aka prime brunch). Would recommend to come in earlier or after because the l line does get long. If you want to try something different with good quality ingredients, definitely would recommended this place. read more
FOOD The food is amazing. I had never tried Scandinavian food, and now I'm dying to return! The food is clean and nutritious. It's not the type of spot for a gluttony meal! But that's what makes it so special since brunch is usually like that. We got the Trout and Cod Cake Plate, and a brunch grazing board with both egg options, rye bread, the potato open-faced sandwich, and havarti. I don't even like seafood, and I can't wait until I can have the Trout and Cod Cake Plate again. The rest of the food was delicious and light, but filling. They also offer mimosas and they were at a perfect ratio. They sell some treats by the package to take home, and I took a loaf of rye bread and brought my partner a Cardamon Morning Bun. He found it delicious! SEATING This is the only thing that wasn't my favorite, but wouldn't stop me from coming back. It's an order at the counter and find a table kind of place, which isn't my favorite, so I was a little overwhelmed. But we were able to quickly find a table as there are some available indoor and out. We went at 1pm on a Sunday, so I'm not sure if it was busier and harder to find a table beforehand. It seems like it was starting to clear up a bit as we arrived. This is also a good place to bring a laptop and do some work! AMBIANCE This is a casual eating spot, with their order-at-the-counter style. It's perfect for a casual breakfast, brunch, or lunch. SERVICE The people who work here are kind. We felt very welcomed and helped out when we needed it. OVERALL I can't wait to come back here! The food was clean and delightful, and so satisfying that my friend and I both took goodies home after our meal. One of my new favorite spots. read more

I was so excited to try this place! My friend invited me to their pop-up brunch, where the head chef was testing out different recipes. Can you say, open faced sandwiches galore? That food was impressive, so I expected nothing less coming to the new brick & mortar location. It was a lot to take in on a Sunday morning. The place was jam-packed, and I'm thrilled that they have so much business. It was my friend's birthday, and he had staked out a small portion of a tall, communal table. Late-comers had to find a different spot. We ordered at the register, and I opted for the brunch board, selecting a few things I thought sounded tasty. The food took awhile to be prepared, probably because it was so busy, but the wait was worth it. Seedy bread with butter, cheese, eggs, and bacon... a fun Scandinavian twist on an American classic. I wasn't a huge fan of some items like the cheese, but it brought back good memories of the pop-up event. This is one of my friend's favorite places to eat and hang out, and I'd honestly only go if he was there. I'd like to try a few other things on their menu for lunch, and perhaps I'll head there on a weekday and hope that it's less crowded. Overall I'm glad I finally visited! read more

TLDR; definitely go, be prepared to spend a lot of $$ if you don't get the board, and avoid the iced beverages :) I'd leave 4.5 if I could! Delicious, super fresh and unique brunch spot. My friend and I tried practically everything, but my favorites were the Hot Smoked Trout Bowl, sprouted rye bread with butter and cinnamon knot. I was so torn between a 4 and a 5 star but I'm knocking off one star for the price. Agree with other reviews, the prices are REALLY high- and I'm used to paying Sf brunch prices. My trout bowl (that was very very small), a yogurt bowl and a latte was somehow $40. The choose 5 deal seems to be a much better value, but a little sad there's no option to get some of the menu items in it. Lastly I was a little sad my iced latte came out with all the ice already completely melted :( for a $6 latte that felt off. Definitely plan on returning but will be a little more careful ordering next time. read more

Very homey. I wonder how authentic this is in terms of Northern European food. Nonetheless, pleasant brunch experience & will keep bookmarked for future visits. My friend and I arrived around 1. Parking wasn't difficult, plenty of spots along the alleys intersecting Market St. We each ordered their popular brunch board-- a platter of six small dishes chosen from a rotating list of items. A bit late in the day, but it's always a good time for brunch food ^.^ Here are the six dishes I chose: RUNNY ORGANIC EGG, CREAMY SPINACH: The runniest yolk nestled in the plumpest little egg! I loved the purée. This was like a soup that would have been lovely with toast-- though it was one of the platter options, my friend and I couldn't justify spending $3 on bread. Tragic! Regretted it after having my first bite, it would have been magical. PINK BAY SHRIMP, EGG AND DILL: I think this is similar to ceviche, has a slight acidity to the seasoning? I don't know. But I do know that it was tasty. SWEET MELON WITH TARRAGON AND MINT: Strange how a simple addition of tarragon would liven up watermelon! Deliciously flavorful and unique. HOUSEMADE YOGURT, MASHED BERRIES, CHAMOMILE GRANOLA: Loved the housemade yogurt-- unsweetened but paired well with the berries. Chamomile wasn't as notable because of the overpowering fruit flavor, but I'm not one to complain about a parfait. HAY-SMOKED CHEESE, CHANTERELLE AND CHARRED CORN: Light & fluffy cheese with subtle earthy aroma... Was divine with the juicy corn and chanterelle. Someone else mentioned that the ambiance is "light and airy"-- couldn't have put it better myself. We enjoyed the soft indie music coupled with modern decor. Loved it. Kantine is always a favorite brunch spot of mine! On the few occasions that I have dined indoors, the restaurant has always been bustling but never at full capacity (so we always could snag a table indoors). The interior is bright and well decorated. My partner and I have tried nearly every pastry that Kantine has to offer but these two in particular keep us coming back -- the smoked trout open face sandwich and almond pastry. Usually Kantine offers a bright rotational tea/coffee like a lavender latte or hibiscus tea. They also add new pastries into their lineup so every week there is something new to check out. read more

My happiest spot in SF (mostly because I like to end my Sunday rides here with a flaky Grovbirke and macchiato). Discovered this spot in late 2019, and during the pandemic, have been consistently coming here for their savory pastry (Grovbirke) after a 30-mile bike ride. Tried the brunch plate for the first time back in Feb, and the food just immediately transported me back to Copenhagen, where I visited during the Christmas holiday. The Scandinavian small "dishes" were elegantly crafted and plated, and I am especially fond of the soft poached egg in spinach creamy (the flavor and texture will blow you away) and the sprouted rye bread. One of the best vacations I've ever taken involved a few days in Denmark and I have really great memories of fabulous brunch in the Nyhavn cafes so when I heard of a Scandinavian brunch spot opening in SF, I was really excited to go. Kantine offers a 5 or 7 course brunch menu where you can customize and upgrade. Of course, I had the 7 course menu - danish rye bread, runny organic egg in creamy spinach, trout salad (this was $3 extra), bacon, rice pudding, roast cauliflower and aebelskivers (another $3 extra). That was a very impressive brunch board which had an amazing combination of flavors and textures. The stand-out item for me was the house-cured and smoked bacon. They were somehow able to make bacon more intensely flavorful and not greasy at the same time. I wonder if they would let me order double or triple servings of that bacon next time. It's that good!!! They are located near the corner of Market and Laguna and the restaurant is really clean and well-lighted. With tax and tip and an iced tea, this was $35 so probably a bit on the pricey side but well worth it. I can't wait to come back and try their other items. Highly recommended!!! read more

I am a natural nibbler. So the brunch board and the ability to order a little bit of various items was highly appealing to me. -Runny egg with spinach. The flavors were mild, yet very creamy and rich. -Fish cakes. Probably the least of my favorite. A tad too dry and fishy tasting for me. -Lamb meatballs. I normally don't like the gamey taste of lamb, but like the egg, the flavors of the meatball were mild yet rich. -Hot rye porridge. Smooth and creamy. The porridge is meant to be sweet, but wasn't overly so. -Danish rye bread. A little on the thick side, but moist and not too grainy. The five dish option was a perfect size as well, leaving me satisfied but not stuffed. read more

great brunch spot to try if you're a fan of smoked fish, danish pastries, and scandinavian food in general! we got the brunch board with havarti, pork belly, carrots, yogurt with granola, rye bread, trout salad, and a runny egg with creamed spinach. the trout salad, yogurt, carrots, and pork belly were amazing - all very flavorful and well-cooked. i didn't love the rye bread, it was hard to chew and drier than i expected. the havarti was good but very heavy. we also got a mocha and a latte, both of which were well-made. just generally good coffee in large quantities! also loved the savory mushroom pastry and the sweet one with berries. the service was also great - the staff are very sweet and accommodating! :) read more

Ambience: California meets Scandinavia Food: Think Smörgåsbord Price: Steep for breakfast but totes worth it We originally had reservation for another place but decided not to go there because the drive time from there to the airport would have been ridiculous and my friends did not want to risk missing their flights. And this is how we ended up at Kantine. It was very busy when we got here, thankfully a party was leaving and we were able to snag an indoor table right by the door. The breeze that morning from the outside really helped cool down the place otherwise, it was a steaming hot day. And that's saying a lot coming from someone from Houston. But I digress. The coffee was absolutely fantastic. I tried my friend's soft boiled egg in creamed spinach and it was perfection in a cup. I had an assortment of things on my plate which tasted from good to absolutely amazing. The burnt corn mushroom dish with crème fraîche being the best thing I put in my mouth while I was at Kantine. If I am ever back in town, I will definitely be going back for the corn + mushroom + crème fraîche dish. read more
