My kids and I have enjoyed this Bend locally owned and operated restaurant since it has opened. Came here last night with my husband and daughter and spent over $120 and we all left hungry. The food took so long, at least an hour. We all ordered the special roll, which turned out to be pretty bad. I'm not very picky with sushi but the sauce ruined the roll, I had to try to dab it off with a napkin. The other rolls we ordered were also sub par. We ate the sushi because we were so hungry and left to go straight to the grocery store for more food because no one was full. The only good part about the meal was the service, our waitress was great. But would never recommend this restaurant. It was so frustrating to be waiting an hour for food and then to look over and see the man rolling sushi chatting and laughing with his friends sitting at the bar while we sat and waited. Went in for a birthday dinner with three people, walked in and was walked past by two people, then told we would be seated in a minute. After ten minutes of waiting we were told it'd be a few more minutes but we were asked to stand behind the curtain and wait.... if anyone knows, the curtain waiting area is quite small. Our first experience here was with their HH. Prices are maked down, but marked down to the amount where you think that should be the normal price. They are in prime location and one of the few sushi places on the west side. However, the lack luster service from the servers and chefs, tiny spaces and slow service, make this for a disappointing experience. We have been there maybe 5-6 times because they are convenient and each time we walk away less than impressed. The sushi rolls have been sloppy, the miso too salty, the rice in the nigiri crumbling when picked up, like I said, lackluster service, slow service and over priced for the typical sushi menu. I never like leaving reviews like this, but it is just an average sushi place. I won't comment on the quality or how "fresh" the fish is and no one should unless they ask the chef specifically where it comes from, when they get it and how it's cared for in transport. You can ask some chef's and they will say fresh right out of the sea is not the best. It needs to sit for a little bit. It is rare that it goes from sea to table. So I sometimes chuckle when I see people comment on that. The stars are for the the warm environment it does have, that they offer HH, their location and few of the menu items. Upon leaving Kanpai I feel as though I just got cheated out of $85. The food had no flavor and was priced 2-3 times has high as it should have been. I was shocked when the rolls arrived at the table to see that they were half rolls! Who does that?! I paid 12 dollars for half of a sushi roll. The 18 dollar ramen was flavorless and pitiful. The service was ok but the food was so subpar I feel that It is my duty to warn potential future customers. Extremely disappointed with taste of food, quantity of food, and price. The best ever sushi is here! REAL CRAB MEAT used in all their rolls for prices that are comparable to any other sushi joint. Now that is quality and taste that can't be mimicked. Imitation crab meat doesn't stand a chance. It's a smaller establishment that gets darn busy, but the food will come out fast. The menu boasts rolls that have unique twists, such as mango vinaigrette, and every roll is elevated by their real crab meat. At times, it felt as if the tastes of the other fish were masked by the crab, but overall, everything was super fresh. Something about being in the Pacific Northwest eh? When I lived in Bend, I had a love/hate relationship with Kanpai. The food is good and the vegetarian sushi menu is AWESOME. No place has a veggie menu like this place does and it's creative. They used to have this tempura fried banana dessert sushi with a plum sauce which was amazing but unfortunately it's no longer on the menu :O( The prices are reasonable, the place is usually hopping, and according to my husband and friends the fish was always fresh. But the service can ben sooooo S-L-O-W especially if you are at a table. And it doesn't even matter how many people are there. It's the same slow service when it's super busy as it when there are only 3 other diners in the place. If you are looking for a leisure place to chit chat and don't care about how long it takes for your server to check in with you, you probably wont care. But if you are hungry and want to eat in a reasonable time, you may want to sit at the sushi bar and get there right at 5pm when they open. Also, keep an eye on your check b/c they have been known to charge for items never received. Don't bother ordering wine b/c it's overpriced for what you get. read more

Me and my boyfriend saved our money to go out to what I thought would be a nice dinner here. First we paid $21 just for our reservation 10 per person and an extra dollar for god knows what. We get there and get sat at the worst table in the entire place it was round and could barely fit our menus and waters. The spot the table was in was crammed I couldn't even pull my chair out to sit down because it was already touching someone else's. We sit down to order and find out they're out of salmon so we just order green tea to start they come and tell us they're out the server was nice she brought us another tea on the house which I appreciate. But at this point we just wanted to leave. We only ordered one roll, we just wanted to get out of there and go somewhere else because of how uncomfortable the table was. That one $20 roll took a whole hour to come out and wasn't anything special. With how expensive it is to eat here I expected the experience to be more enjoyable. We also were charged for a random service fee which is a little ridiculous to me because of how long it took and how terrible the experience was. The ambiance also wasn't anything special honestly the Cheesecake Factory is more visually appealing it wasn't bad just again not worth the price, the wait, and the uncomfortable crammed seating. If you go here DO NOT bother with reservations because you'll pay $20 for a terrible table when there are plenty of other much better empty tables. After we left we ordered okawa which was more than worth the price. Overall a big waste of our time and money. read more

Kanpai is among the best sushi in Bend and while not the best sushi I have ever had, its a solid option in town. The fish is obviously very fresh and the sushi is very well prepared. I am a fan of doing chefs choice whenever it is an option eating out and sushi places are awesome for that. I was impressed with the Omakase at Kanpai during a previous experience and thought the 4-5 plate option was perfect for me as a somewhat lighter eater. During my most recent trip we did several pieces of Nigiri and 2 chefs choice sushi rolls and it turned out great. While visiting family I decided to give Kampai another try after all these years and see if the sushi was still up to par. I figured with a to go order I would be safe from having a negative service interaction. Firstly when I ordered they said they add 18% gratuity for to go orders which seems pretty steep considering we received no other service. I'm all for supporting businesses during this time, but a tip is suppose to go to the service staff for taking care of you. Are we now expected to tip for food being prepared on top of the high sushi prices? At this point I'm just hoping the sushi is worth it.... NOPE! I was floored that nothing had any flavor at all?!? I was so disappointed! I paid a ridiculous amount for subpar flavorless sushi and on top of it was forced to pay an 18% tip. As if that all wasn't enough I was told my order would be ready in 30 minutes and was left waiting because it actually took 45 minutes. Please just be accurate with how long it will take and be considerate of your customers time. Well at the very least I can move on. Now that the sushi matches the attitude (bad and unappealing) I can profoundly state that I will never be back. I am however extremely excited to try other sushi options in Bend next time I visit or I'll just wait until I'm back home where I can have exceptional, fresh and flavorful sushi at half the cost of this place and where everyone there is thankful for all their customers! Kanpai is probably my favorite sushi place in Bend. It's always packed and the service can be slow but the employees have always been nice. I think their prices are reasonable. In general, sushi is expensive. If it were cheap, I would question the establishment. I enjoy the Orgasm Roll & the Smiling Buddha. I was part of a group of 6 that stopped in at 7:30 on a busy Friday night, and I could not imagine a better sushi experience. Kanpai is quite small, and everything is freshly made to order for you, so don't expect your sushi to come out at a fast food pace. I read all of the yelp reviews before visiting, and was pleasantly surprised to find excellent service from wait staff and no unreasonable waits for anything. We tried a variety of different Nigiri and Sashimi options, as well as several of the Classic and Specialty rolls. First off, the star of the show for me -- an absolute standout that dazzled my taste buds and had me on cloud nine: the Yakuza roll: Ahi Tuna, Cucumbers, Tempura Fried Jalapenos, topped w/ Seared Filet Mignon, Pickled Red Onions, and Wasabi Aioli. This roll had it all -- perfect texture, a little spice, and complex flavors. Outstanding. Also near the top would be the special Nigiri of the evening: Ahi & Striped Sea Bass in a light, flavorful, sesame oil and soy sauce. All incredibly fresh and vibrant. I'm a fan of a good dry sake, so the server brought me two different samples to try, and I ended up ordering the Origin of Purity -- an excellent accompaniment to my dinner. Highly recommended. The fun part for me was sharing the many different flavors from the variety that we ordered -- and the conversation with friends that happened during the short wait times between our courses. In addition to the above mentioned items, we also ordered and enjoyed the following: -Salmon & Ahi Nigiri -Broiled Tomato Nigiri -Flying Kamikaze -Shipwrecks -Orgasm -Tsunami -Kanpai Roll Our night was topped off perfectly with a sampling of Kanpai's homemade ice creams -- Salted Caramel, Coconut, Avocado, and Fermented Garlic. Been here off and on for years. Can no longer recommend for any dish or occasion. Came for a birthday dinner tonight. Portions were massive and not in a good way. Nothing was delicate. Nothing was for the educated palate. The sashimi was slimy. The filet sashimi was chewy and I think a low grade piece of steak. The shrimp tempura at 5 fusion is 10x batter. This was dry, chewy. At 5:30, two of us scored a table outside after 5 minutes...and thank goodness! Inside was deafeningly loud! So our meal was very pleasant. The waitresses work together very well. What did we have? Miso soup, too much vinegar for my tastes? Asian pear salad with added shrimp, included were avacado, maple-glazed walnuts, pears, goat cheese, mushrooms, and very fresh greens. It was fantastic for $14. We ordered two shusi rolls. One was called Gone-Jah with salmon, mango, avacado and cream cheese, and it was very fresh and delicate and delicious. Second sushi roll was Flying Kamikaze with salmon, macademian nuts, avocado, cucumber and spice mango sauce. It was gulped down with delightful "aaahhhhs". I have tried to continually give this place the benefit of the doubt. The menus are dirty and trashed. The servings are inconsistent. The server is typically really nice and tries to give good service. The fish isn't cared for the way sushi should be. Its soggy and fishy stretched over warm rice or worse crunchy old rice. Considering the sushi scenario in Bend this place was decent a few years ago but it now feels like it has been neglected and skirts by on the occasional tourist. CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! I want to give this place 4 stars... and had I given the starts after going the last several times, it would have received 4 stars. BUT, and this is a HUGE but, this last visit was very disturbing. The service was TERRIBLE. And by terrible, I mean this: We got there and they said that it would probably only be about 5 minutes to get an outside table. No bigs... we'll wait, it's oh so beautiful outside. We waited... and it took about 10 minutes before a couple different tables left. No bigs there either. The problem is that they saw this happen and it took them a while to just clean off the table. And the thing is, if they were busy inside... then I would have been kinda okay with that, but they weren't. They were dead inside. So, um, let's go... I was ready to clean the damn thing off myself. Then we sit down... we ask the woman if we can order some beer - she says that she's not our waitress but that we can have our waitress bring some drinks. Okay, I guess... I mean, really... it's dead inside - can you just tell our waitress, or maybe even send her out? And certainly I would have overlooked the lack of care if our waitress actually came out in the next 10 minutes. But she didn't. Then we finally get some water, and we finally order, and it just took forever to get her to ever come back and ask us if we were okay, if we wanted another beer, if we wanted... um, anything. We actually had to go inside to order round 2 of beer, and we also had to head in to ask for our bill. Then after getting our bill, I felt ready to walk it in there because we were ready to get the hell out of there. Meanwhile, the place was practically empty everywhere, not just inside... so I am really not sure what she was doing that whole time, but it certainly didn't include waiting on us. And it makes me OH so sad and mad... because I think that this is really the only place in Bend that you should get sushi. It's delicious, and there prices are as expected. But with service like that, my memory will need to be erased with one of those things from "Men in Black", or I'll just have to wait quite a while until I forget that we were treated so crapily. Damn it! The ambiance is good - sitting outside is great. Sitting inside at the bar is cool and obviously results in better service. Sitting at any table inside is cool too because I like the decor - and it's tight, but it feels cozy and not irritating. They have some funky rolls that are pretty good, although I would like some other more usual options (priced at more usual prices). Nigiri is good, but could be just a touch bigger. The sushi is tasty (for Bend) but a little pricey. They have some new and exciting things on their menu that other places do not have, but it is nearly canceled out because the staff is unbearable to be around. The location is small; you can hear all the conversations going on in the place. Again, I must mention, the service at this place is terrible!! I have been three times now and every single time the service was awful and finally the last time we called to complain and the manager said "If you don't like it, don't come back." For the most part this is what I refer to as "slapped together" sushi...and for what they charge, it's a crime. From reading older reviews, it seems receiving food in a timely manner was a big problem. Management may now be overcompensating for this past issue and a reason the chefs may feel pressured to perform with speed out of fear of getting ridiculed or possibly fired. Not sure, just a guess. It's a real shame their leaders can't figure out a "happy medium" or hire more staff to accommodate the crowd properly. That said, I've eaten at Kanpai several times now and wish they cared enough to take the time and attention needed to create a delicious visual masterpiece with each plate being served. A masterpiece so beautiful it could be eaten with your eyes alone. Sushi is about presentation as much as freshness and taste. It requires skill and finesse. Actually it's an art but this place misses the mark big time! Quality chefs use precision when cutting each slice of fish and/or roll. Making perfect bite sized mouthfuls that reflect their workmanship with pride. Here they just eyeball the cut. Some bites might be 2 inches wide and some bites might be an inch...in other words they are careless and unintentional. Basically Kanpai is all about SPEED and how fast the plates/rolls can be made and they brag about it behind the counter. That way you can eat up, shut up and allow them to turn the table/bar stool which brings in "mo" money. It's a shame this place rather serve "fast food" sushi rather than taking it to the next level. It feels more like a drive-thru restaurant when dining here. Then again, what do you expect from a bunch of white guys that haven't been properly trained. Also, when I enter a Japanese restaurant, I want to feel as though I just entered another part of the world but I just don't get that feeling here. On a good note, they do offer great shrimp and vegetable tempura and have a pretty good sake selection. We have always had exceptional servers too which is greatly appreciated. read more

The service here is worst of the worst in Bend, in my opinion. It's slow, inattentive, and often rude. I've eaten here perhaps four times, twice thanks to a gift card, but no more, no more i say! I've seen tables be seated, then leave in annoyance ten minutes later without so much as water. The prices are the highest of any sushi place in Bend, but I somewhat expect this, as the fish quality seems to warrant it. Happy hour prices are only marginally better, but the portions get skimpy.
