The tofu has some weird slime on it, is barely cooked enough to hold shape with more of a consistency of oysters than a tasty morsel of fried tofu like we were hoping for. So I have to laugh at this place because they have a sign in front of the restaurant stating "Best Chinese food in town." Not that they don't have good food, but they are the only Chinese place in Berkley. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to Chinese food. My husband is tougher to crack though. Kam's was one of our first places on our quest to find good Chinese food in our area. My husband wasn't super impressed so we haven't gone back. I thought it was pretty decent Chinese food, I got the standard sweet & sour chicken. From what I recall the egg rolls weren't fantastic and I think that's how my old man judges a good Chinese place. Would give 3.5 if possible. This is Chinese American cuisine, not strictly speaking Chinese. It is what it is they aren't claiming that you are stepping into a Chinese experience. I'm not going to review it by comparing it to a different cuisine. It's tasty and CONSISTENT. Consistency is important to me. When I know that I can order something and know exactly what I'm getting it makes those "tough decision/too tired" nights MUCH easier. I've eaten at Kam's since 1998 and have tried a lot of the menu. It tastes the same as it has since the beginning. All of it has been fresh tasting, good decent proteins - chicken and beef are nice and tender so you know its good quality. Veg are fresh, have good color and are quite tasty. As an aside, absolute favorite is the Crab Rangoon - they do a great job with it for sure! Is it a great value? Unfortunately no, but its okay. A few of the reviewers have said that it's bland, and I have to agree. I get the impression that perhaps thats what people used to really want. Over the last 20 years Kam's has been open some tastes have changed quite a bit. We do season it additionally at home - a little red pepper flake, garlic, pepper, a dash of I would love to see some dumplings such as Guotie (pot stickers) or dare I say spare-ribs? - something simple and really especially Chinese. While I won't review the food based on the fact that they don't accept credit/debit cards I will give my humble opinion: Okay this really bugs me. The resturants which don't accept credit cards are being very short sighted. We all know that 2.9%, or so, is pretty much the highest fee charged per transaction. This is a pretty busy little place, they may even qualify for a lower percentage. So come on, enough is enough, either your in the service business or not? Maybe they could do a survey and find out how many people would come in MORE if they didn't have to stop at a friggin' ATM first! Give them a try if your in the neighborhood. read more

The rating for this chinese restaurant depends on what you are looking for. If you want authentic then this is by far not the place. If you are looking for Americanized Chinese food with lots of sauce to eat with your rice, then this is the place. I think this place is a good stand by if you don't want to go farther or pay more for Chinese food. My wife loves the veggie lo mein. Nice slurpy Cantonese style noodles with plenty of gravy to make it slide down. If you are a fan of Americanized Chinese food, this is a solid place. The locals love it. read more

I really hate to blast a place when it's probably just some good people trying to make an honest living, but man...their food was SO bad. We ordered the almond boneless chicken and General Tso's. I also ordered hot and sour soup and an order of spring rolls. When my gf opened up her almond chicken, it looked like there was a thick layer of brown jelly/sludge all over the top. It didn't really look like the gravy one comes to expect on almond chicken. The flavor wasn't horrible and the portion was quite sizeable, but I'd definitely trade an uptick in quality over the gigantic portion. I like food. A lot. I rarely leave leftovers, but in the case of Kam's...I only ate about 1/3 of my soup and General Tso's chicken. The soup was very thick...way thicker than I normally expect for Hot and Sour soup. It seemed like it was almost the consistency of the gravy on the almond chicken. The General's chicken was overly breaded, lacked spice, and tasted like it wasn't very good quality. The spring rolls were overly doughy and tasted like something you'd expect out of the frozen food section of your grocery store that you'd microwave (which is probably what they did). I don't know. Again...I hate to come to Yelp to slam a place, but I'm looking out for my fellow Yelpers. The stuff doesn't taste fresh. It seems as if everything is probably bought in bulk - frozen. I hate wasting food. I hate feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. Even in the most dire of circumstances, I would not be eating Kam's again. Oh...and if you want a fortune cookie, you need to order them by the dozen. Because everybody needs 12 fortune cookies. I really wouldn't eat here again. I would not even send my worse enemy here to eat. I ordered hot and sour soup and a General Tso's chicken combination plate. The hot and sour soup was not spicy at all. When I eat hot and sour soup I want it to be very spicy and I was looking for that spicy kick and it never came. In the combination platter; The fried rice was just very bland. Honestly, it didn't even taste like fried rice. It taste like rice that was boiled and they just threw random pieces of small meat in it. It had no vegetables and dry pieces of meat. I only got one pack of soy sauce like that was going to help I asked for medium spice in my General tTo's chicken and it taste like it didn't have anything in it. I ordered a combination plate. They didn't give me an egg roll and only one pack of soy sauce. It was OK. But for a first impression, I'm disappointed given what I payed (in cash). No receipt given either. I've just added another star. I didn't notice that the dinner portion comes with an extra scoop of rice and no egg roll. I wish I'd had known that when I ordered. I've eaten here several times over the years and have always received middle-of-the-road food. It's not bad, but it's not that great. The portions are somewhat on the small side compared to what you typically get at a chinese food place, but they're pretty tasty. Cashew chicken is my favorite. Veggies and chicken always fresh. Love hitting this place up after getting some drinks in downtown Berkeley but I'll get it anytime of the day. Hmmm....tried it for the first time yesterday. General Tso chicken and Sesame Chicken. It's the same chicken pieces, just different sauces. It was "OK" not Yummy or WOW. I'll tell what I liked and didn't like, since you may think different. The chicken pieces were the smalled curled up kind, not like the puffed breaded kind, if you know what I mean. Like thinner breading maybe? and the ends all curl up and stick together to make bigger clumps. The sauce was good, but thin and runny. I like the puffed breaded chicken, and a thicker sauce, almost like a glaze, and there was NO spice at all, for being General Tso, so you may have to specifiy better how spicy you would like it. I didn't eat it all, so for $9, it's not my cup of tea. The lady was nice, it was fast service, but I don't think I'd go back. At least not get any chicken dish if I did. Some times places I've been too, use larger flat pieces for the Almond Chicken, if that's so, I may try that. Egg roll was typical. read more

I got the Mongolian beef dinner combo and some fried wontons. This place is cash only and pretty cheap with large Portions That said, the Mongolian beef was slimy and didn't taste very good. Chicken fried rice that came as a side was pretty much just brown lookin rice with maybe some veggies or chicken in there but rather flavorless. The wontons had barely anything in them and were more or less just eating fried wonton wrappers. If you like that no descript brown sauce plus veggies and meat which is classic american Chinese food then go for it, you'll get a lot of food for your buck Personally I ended up tossing most of the food after a few bites - if I'm gonna eat greasy junk food and get fat, it should at least taste good. For my money though, I'll drive to Royal Oak or Ferndale, or maybe even Birmingham, to get some food that's much much better. We've tried a couple items, and were mildly pleased. No me gusta. I ordered the egg drop soup, General Tso's Chicken and Kam's Lo Mein. Let's start with the soup. I love egg drop soup and order it every time I get Chinese food. This soup was extra thick and tasteless. Moving on to the Kam's Lo Mein. I couldn't even allow myself to try the chicken for it looked still alive. I will say the noodles were good but that's about it. Lastly, the General Tso's Chicken. The chicken fried rice was even more tasteless than my egg drop soup. It was also hard and clumpy. There was nothing wrong with the General Tso's chicken however it was very sweet and not spicy at all (and I am one who is such a wimp when it comes to spice levels). This is by far one of the worst Chinese food experiences I have had. I stopped in when passing by the place a couple months ago. I grabbed a menu and checked the reviews on line. The reviews were ok so I thought I would try it. When I walked in to pick up my carry out the place smelled strange but I passed it off. I ordered the chicken fried rice. This was the laziest I have ever encountered. It was brown rice with flat pieces of chicken. It resembled pressed chicken or similar to lunch meat. No onion or egg. The egg rolls were OK, not much flavor. The Almond Chicken was really bad. Heavy and all the breading was mushy not an almond in site. Good Chinese food is not so easy to find in the metro-Detroit area. I am not claiming that Kam's qualifies as haute-Chinois, like Peking House. But, in my opinion, they have the best veggie fried rice in town. It is full of vegetables, and if you mix in some of their packets of hot sauce, it is just so tasty. I decided to try this Chinese restaurant because it's located two blocks from where I live. First of all I found it extremely odd that they only take cash. I read a few yelp reviews and it was mixed but I did see you from a couple people that they had large portions which I know is subjective. Bottom line is I paid $13.10 for chicken and broccoli and an egg roll. I could literally go down the street to another Chinese restaurant for three dollars more and feed two people. I have experimented around the menu and have never been disappointed. The owners are a sweet couple and one of them is always there. They are always friendly, they are clean, quick and consistant.....and I LOVE them. Have been coming here for 15 years. Have tried other carry out and it's never been as good as Kams. We've moved farther away and tried the few places in our new neighborhood. Will travel the extra distance for Kams. So what it's cash only. They tell you that when you call in the order. It's Americanized Chinese food because many people want it that way and competing carry out Chinese diners are no different. They are pleasant in their customer service but not overly friendly.
