I don't know where to start first, but - The goopy yellow gravy was on top of the take-out, in the container, not separate, which left me with mush by the time it was home. There was absolutely ZERO flavor. None. One of my kiddos licked the gravy from the outside of their box and made a terrible face before I even got a taste - and I knew right then it was gross. I tried adding sauce after sauce. Even salt. Nothing. Everyone else said their food was "just okay". I'm a big fan of this very tasty Chinese food place. I call it a place... because its not a restaurant. In fact, if you want to eat there, you're going to be turned away. They managed to cram a hole of wonderful Chinese food into a strip mall. No chairs for you, and no credit cards either for that matter. One of my favorite things is when you call up to place your order. One word questions, broken engrish, and they know exactly what you mean when you try to explain it all. Today I called and place an order asking for almond boneless chicken. This is a pretty much a mainstay in Chinese cuisine. First when I called the person who answered the phone acted like he had never heard of almond boneless chicken being a meal. Which I found quite odd then I spoke to someone else and she explained to me they did not have Chinese almond boneless chicken at this Chinese restaurant but they had some thing like it and it had lots of vegetables. A ordered that. After I went and picked it up and came home the chicken had been cooked wait earlier in the day and was disgusting and rockhard.... The gravy was thin in strange. And there were no vegetables at all. We don't like and what she did to you when I called to complain I was advised that they would replace the meal if I came back up to the restaurant and brought the disgusting meal with me so they could inspect it first. Just yesterday i happened to be in Royal Oak and then went to a dine-in dinner at another local pizza joint with family (Wokery is take out only otherwise we would have went there). Afterwards I placed an order at the Wokery. Even re-heated the next day nothing comes close to this place for Sweet and Sour Chicken....when it is fresh...no other restaurant stands a chance. Unlike chain restaurants, buffets and most other mid-to-high volume chinese restaurants serve the same old pre-processed chicken, sauce, egg rolls, etc. Most of the chicken is cooked/fried and it is mostly breading after the process is done. Not the Wokery. The chicken is huge chunks!....made daily. Always fresh vegitables in the sweet and sour sauce. The sauce?....good Lord!....the best! Egg rolls....are exactly how my mom's used to be when she made them from scratch. I cannot count how many times i have been to this restaurant and can honestly say i have never had a bad experience...once. Portion size vs price?...outstanding. I am not a small guy by any means and I can put food away with the best of them but i have YET to eat an entire combination dinner in one sitting....and it wasnt for a lack of trying or effort! The older owners have moved on and i believe it is their daughter who now run this take-out gem....but the same quality and professionalism remain. I wish I could be as enthusiastic as the other Yelpers about The Wokery, but I just don't think the food is at the same level with other Chinese restaurants in the area. The best dishes I have tried there are the subgum chop suey dishes. I like spicy food, so I always ask them to make everything spicy, and they do, which is nice. I am particularly critical of the Szechuan dishes. Maybe I'm a Szechuan "snob," but I find the Szechuan dishes at The Wokery to be not as flavorful as others. Plus I think the veggies are often too soft and not as fresh tasting. The prices are in line with most Asian joints, and they seem to be a husband/wife team who are very nice to the customers. They don't accept credit/debit cards, which might be a little annoying to some people but I pay cash most of the time anyway. I live in a corridor where there is Young's (Royal Oak), Golden City (Madison Heights), Peking House (Royal Oak) and Panda Express (Oakland Mall), so competition is stiff for my Chinese food dollar. The Wokery, though, is by far the closest to my house (I could walk there in less than 10 minutes), so I do go there from time to time, especially when time is a factor. read more

As for me, being no fan of Chinese food, I will say the eggrolls are pretty good, but that's all i'll get. He got shrimp fried rice one time and even though the shrimps are on the smaller side, the poopchutes were huge and i'm sorry people, I just fucking CAN'T do those poopchutes, I don't care how fucking small they are. i decided to try this place. they don't have any smaller size a la carte' sizes, so, if you want, say, a pint, no can do -- you have to get the full size, which is $15 or more. they have specials, by which i think they mean lunch specials. these were a bit on the small side, but were slightly cheaper than a similar combo plate at a couple of other nearby places, so that was ok. i'd rather get smaller and cheaper. here's my issue. i ordered steak kow. and, you know how chinese places go heavy on the vegetables and very light on the meat or protein? well, this steak kow had almost no meat at all. i can understand not a lot, as this is a common screw tactic for many years at chinese places. what are ya gonna do? but, almost no meat at all, i'm talking 4 or 5 small pieces. is not acceptable. plenty of broccoli, though. i called them up and left a message. no call back. called them again the next day and got the counter lady, whose english is not that great. i was finally able to to decipher that they were not willing to do anything about it. "the chef makes it how he makes or it,' or some such. we were both very polite, but, as i told another chinese restaurant owner years ago, if you see me in here in 5 or 10 years, and you wonder where i've been, you'll know. quick note, takee outee, near 696 and van dyke, gives good meat content in their beef lo mein. however, it was a little far to go, and they're one of the chinese places that has jacked up all their prices, like a 50 cent or dollar surcharge that they don't tell you about in advance, on every menu item, on the pretext that the pandemic has made it tough to get supplies, which was probably never true, and is now no longer true. oh, i should add that the steak kow was otherwise so-so. we also had almond boneless chicken. that was a bit better, but not that great. i recently noticed that the almond boneless at empress garden in southfield, is a touch better then average. this place was slightly below average. won't be back there soon, so sorry. good luck read more
