Kam's is solely a takeout spot but in the summer there are some tables outside. I would recommend calling ahead and placing your order. The food is a decent but not very flavorful. It was mostly sweet rather than a more well rounded meal. The fried rice is pretty good and the spring roll is very yummy. For a quick eats it's a great spot. read more

We ordered a beef and broccoli dinner and a large wonton soup. The order took all of ten minutes. The beef and broccoli was average. The wonton soup was good. Just to update. This place is a roll of the dice. The first time I went here the food was AMAZING. That was a long time ago. This is a good drive for me so for me to make the trip, says a lot. One time it's great, another time they barely put any sauce on your food. It's like they keep hiring and firing cooks. Honestly compared to all the horrible Chinese restaurants around Metro Detroit, it's by default one of the best. But that's not saying much. One big annoyance is the combination meal being served with "extra rice" rather than an egg roll. If you ask for an egg roll, they'll give it to you, but why should you have to ask? I'm concerned that there are very few recent reviews of Kam's. It's such a perfect location on 12 Mile in Berkley. I've been going there for Chinese Takeout for years. The previous owners were so nice, and always remembered me when I arrived for my pickup. Unfortunately the quality of their food did slip some years ago. I've been back several times this year, and the food is really delicious. Reminds me of the takeout of my childhood. Some of my favorites are their General Tso's Chicken, Egg Foo Young, wonton soup, and their egg rolls. They could use a better website so it's easier to see their menu. Sorry no photos this time. Easily one of the worst Chinese food spots around. Ordered general tso and sweet and sour chicken with fried rice. The rice is really bad but thats come to be expected at all these places now. Frankly, I'm not understanding the poor reviews. I don't live in Berkley, but if I did, I would be patronizing this little, community gem on a more regular basis. Conveniently located, food is delicious and fresh, quick in and out, efficient service, safe/clean Covid precautions and reasonably priced. Yes, they accept cash only, but so what? Before credit cards, all we did was pay with cash. I'm a fan and so is picky, 88 year old mom who recently ate two helpings of pepper steak and three helpings of rice and then raved about it! I have been coming to this place for almost 15 years. It is takeout only so the place is very small but the decor is cute. My favorite dish of theirs is the Hunan Chicken. I am telling you, that dish is the most delicious Chinese food I have ever had. My favorite cheat meal ever. It is a breaded chicken dish with small red chiles, onions, and a sweet and spicy sauce. The chicken is great, but the sauce is what really sets this dish apart. I have tried many other Chinese food places with dishes that are advertised as sweet and spicy and nothing comes even close the Kam's recipe of Hunan Chicken sauce. If you like it really spicy, you can ask it for extra extra Spicy and they usually can accommodate that for you and make it noticeably spicier. The staff is friendly, and the prices are good. The only downside I can think of is that it is Cash-only. I love this place! read more

Finally tried this place after years. I have a few Chinese staples so I often stick to them. I really wanted to like Kam's. They only do carryout - New York style. Worker was nice. Got shrimp fried rice extra green onion. Was solid but nothing standout. Liked there were many bean sprouts. May try another dish here or there. Liked the Yelp sticker on the door. Should hve photographed it. One cool thing is many Chinese boxes hve ditched the metal handle. Which is old school and not microwave safe, thus probably why they hve faded. Many places don't have but really necessary for me. Wonton soup some of the best I have had. Nice large wontons and you could actually find the filling. Very tasty but no - again a detail - fried wontons for top. Almond chicken HUGE AND I MEAN HUGE PORTION - Same with fried rice. Chicken a little on the tough side. Next time will get gravy (not over done) on the side - breading need to be less and a little crispier. Fried rice very tasty. No fortune cooked - come on they can't be more than a dime. Service great and friendly. Will definitely try again and this time ask for less breading, a little crispier and ask about noodles for soup, hot mustard and cookie. Though I want to root for the local business that is established and a mainstay of Berkley, I simply cannot bring myself to give Kam's more than 2 stars. It is outdated WWII era holdout Americanized Chinese food and not even very good at that. I have had serviceable enough Egg Foo Young, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and Sesame Chicken from Kam's. But everything else I've had was either borderline bad or nearly inedible. Dumbed down flavors and complete lack of spiciness even when dishes are ordered "hot". My wife happens to love the place. She grew up around the corner and this is the Chinese food she grew up on, so I think they're is a certain amount of nostalgia at work there. Myself? I couldn't really think of any other reason to go here aside from the fact there is literally nowhere else in Berkley to get Chinese food. I'm considerably more into Thai/Vietnamese (and even Japanese/Korean) than I am Chinese food however... particularly so vs Americanized Chinese food. So take my criticism with a grain of salt if you don't happen to share my bias. If you fantasize about big plates of sweet & sour chicken and almond chicken and egg rolls and fortune cookies this place might just be for you. Fair at best. It stinks when you get sesame chicken looks good on the outside but they can't even bother to use white meat chicken. It's more like cut the entire chicken in pieces and deep fry it in small pieces. Dark grizzly inside that golden brown coating is so disappointing. The fried rice was also very disappointing. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. I go out of my way to get cash just to eat here! Don't expect to take a date here and have a sit down mea, it's takeout only. Very convenient to pop in and pickup order-there is parking on side street or lot behind. I always get pretty much the same order, combination sweet & sour chicken which comes with rice and egg roll- for under $10! I have eaten this meal at a lot of Chinese restaurants and they always tend to be more breading than chicken. These are nice big pieces of chicken and good breading on them. I have had almond boneless chicken and it wasn't my favorite. I have had the crab rangoons (how can you ever go wrong?) and usually get the wonton soup as well. I haven't branched out much so can't report on other items. I wish they accepted credit cards because I never have cash on me, so I have to get cash for this purpose. But the yummy food is worth the extra trip to the ATM. read more

Who feeds someone day old rice? Well I guess Kam's does. It was terrible, inedible, and very disappointing! I will not be returning.

I feel the need to warn people away. The food is bland, expensive and definitely cooked in shortening. How would one know? In a cool room, the oil thickened and became grainy on the plate and on the food as we ate. No one goes for Chinese take-out for their health, but cooking with shortening is just unacceptable. We ordered three large portions of Szechuan dishes with different proteins, extra spicy. They consisted mostly of onions and bell peppers, with a few shreds of carrot, some msg and a little white pepper. It was real bad, and at about $10 for each dish, we were definitely irked. The spring rolls were ok, certainly not worth an additional $2. The rather curt lady at the counter eventually softened to being merely disinterested in telling us about the menu. She was perfectly friendly to the regulars who came in to pick up orders while we waited for ours. So unless you're already on the list of regulars who don't get yelled at or whatever, you may want to find a different place that'll overcharge you for Crisco, onions and rice. read more
