It's not fancy, but the sushi is excellent--thick, long cuts of seafood, a healthy selection of salads & appetizers. As a friend says, "You can't get full on fancy." The big plus for the evening was watching the Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of the WNBA finals on the big screen behind the sushi bar, a great combo. I can't give this place more than 3 stars. The service is quite slow, even when they're not full. When we arrived, there were only two occupied tables. The interior doesn't look like they've invested much time or effort into it. The food is mediocre; I've had better. I wasn't particularly impressed by the Salmon Teriyaki I ordered. A small, family run sushi place that is awesome, on the NW part of town. Yelp reviews got me there so I will return the favor after enjoying a huge sushi roll and teriyaki chicken bowl. The sushi was fresh and delicious and the chicken teriyaki was came in a gigantic portion over freshly sautéed vegetables, with a side of rice. It was all very tasty and served fast. You can watch your sushi being freshly made at the sushi counter or eat at on of the tables inside. Will certainly go back for more. read more

Don't be confused that they are not all quantity over quality...these men are snobby and picky gluttons!...who love only fine ingredients! Bottom line- they loved Kampai...the squid salad was my favorite! Delicious and clearly house made with yummy fresh cucumbers. The nigiri is very fresh and copious! Wanted to try a new sushi place so we headed to Kampai Sushi. The decor is nice and it wasn't too busy when we arrived. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and some tuna nigiri. My wife got a rainbow roll and salmon nigiri. We also got another roll that I forgot the name of... They are very generous with the fish here and the price is reasonable. However, we both felt that quality-wise it was not as good as other places in town. The spicy tuna roll was fine but it was obvious from the nigiri that the fish wasn't as good as we had hoped, lacking the deep red or orange color you hope to see. Similarly, the taste was not as good as we hoped. Sadly I won't be back to Kampai. It's inexpensive but I'd rather pay more for better quality fish. read more

My 100th Yelp Review! I saved it for one of my favorite places... I have been coming to Kampai for over 10 years! And that was before they moved to the North side! I love that it is a family owned business. I always receive great customer service. :) I think their sushi is probably one of the best in Tucson. My other fave is Sushi Yukari, but there are a few other places I need to try. Although I tend to like traditional, they have some great fusion items. Sure, you're not at Nobu, but it's still good. And much easier on the wallet! :) Anyway, my favorites are both the raw and baked scallops, sake salmon, tamago, dynamite, spicy yellowtail roll, spicy salmon roll, baked scallop roll, and asparagus roll (I know, weird, right?!) My favorite appetizers are probably their Kabocha (Pumpkin-like Squash) Tempura, and their soft shell crab. I also love some of the Korean items they offer on their menu, such as the Hwedubop (sashimi salad w/ mixed greens, sashimi, seaweed & squid salad, raw quail egg, fish roe, served with a side of steamed white rice and spicy sauce). I also like their spicy pork (tejii bulgogi). I'm not sure if they still make the following items, but they have offered them at various times during the past 10 years...I loved their Champpong (spicy seafood noodle soup). It isn't super oily like at other places. Perfect for a cool winter night. I also liked their jjol myun (sorry, my Konglish is kinda rusty), which is a type of spicy cold noodle dish. I also enjoy their lunch specials...and at $5.95 for a 1 item, or $9.95 for a 2 item combo, you can't beat that! You choose from a list of items. I usually get either the Spicy Pork (tejii bulgogi), or Beef (bulgogi), or tuna & avocado roll. The lunch specials are served bento style and include a small salad w/ the typical sushi restaurant dressing, a side of steamed rice, miso soup, and a half of an orange.
