Simply amazing! I have had no bad experiences nor smelled anything funny or bad as someone mentioned in one of their reviews, and I have a very good sense of smell. Very helpful servers were knowledgable. Food was very fresh and the menu is HUGE! There is so much variety. I had the Death roll and Bird roll as well as a bite of 3-4 others from my friends' plates and I loved everything. The prices are a touch high for Redding, but nothing like the city. Average but fish preparations were good If you come here primarily for sushi and sashimi, you will be paying high prices but the quality is pretty good. They have an outrageous variety of different sushi and we had to have help coming up with the right combination. We had the Kampai "special" that had both salmon and tuna and shrimp tempura and it was very good. The cooked food, however, was quite disappointing. Their version of chicken teriyaki was more like a Chinese version of chicken stir fry with teriyaki sauce. More veggies than chicken. Tempura was pretty average and my wife's gyoza was quite poor. I think if you stay with the sushi and don't be shy, (ask the waitress for help and be clear about what you don't like), you'll probably be pleased read more

I've always enjoyed dining at Kampai Sushi and have been here numerous times over the years. I was thrilled to hear they had recently expanded and planned a trip here with a friend. It was the end of a very stressful work week and so we each decided to treat ourself. The food was excellent (as always) and the waitress was sweet. I guess we should have figured something was going on when a waiter placed a small table at the end of ours and added a chair to it. But we never expected a different waitress to approach us and ask if we would please leave so that they could seat another party (those are the exact words she used.) In addition, my friend was literally in the middle of a sentence when we were interrupted. Now we had only been at our table for about 45 minutes and together had spent over $60. I lived in Chicago for 45 years and have dined all over the U.S. in all types of restaurants but have "N E V E R" been asked to vacate my table so another party could be seated. It's the restaurant's job to keep those waiting comfortable, not the customer's to ensure the business can keep their tables turning over. I'm glad Kampai is busy, but it's clear they are too busy for me. I'll be taking my desire for sushi elsewhere. read more

Stopped in Redding on the way to Oregon and wanted to have sushi for my father's day dinner and after reading the reviews here we decided to give it a try. They have a HUGE selection of rolls with some pretty original combinations. They do go a little heavy on the inclusion of cream cheese which I'm not a huge fan of in my sushi. I decided on having a valcano roll, pierre roll, and tuna sashimi. The sashimi came after the rolls which I wasn't used to but that could be because they incorrectly brought us maguro sushi at first but they quickly corrected the mistake. It was pretty obvious that our waitress was really inexperienced and wasn't familiar with sushi or the menu. She brought my wife's miso soup but no spoon, brought her a cucumber salad but no fork (it was not possible to eat with chopsticks) and confused sushi and sashimi. Regardless, the tuna was awesome and very fresh and both of my rolls were very good. Someone on here complained in a review that there was too much spicy mayo on the rolls but it was exactly the amount I would expect for those type of "fusion" rolls. My young daughter had her usual salmon sushi and tempura shrimp. I sampled her salmon. It was also very fresh and tasted great. My wife had 3 hand rolls and she said they were all very good. All in all it was a wonderful sushi meal considering we were in Redding (we're from San Diego). Other than the waitress being inexperienced (which the manager apologized for when fixing the sushi/sashimi mix up) we had nothing negative to say. It is a very small restaurant (4 or 5 tables and 7 seats at the bar) so on a busy night you may want to make a reservation. We would definitely visit this restaurant again when in Redding. read more

Always pleased when I come here. Staff was very friendly upon entering by greeting us right away and getting us seated. We decided to get a Goku Roll, Death Roll, 3 spicy hamachi rolls & 2 miso soups. Everything was great. The spicy hamachi rolls could stand just a little more "spicy". It looks like they use a spicy mayo over the top rather than just straight sriracha. Still good. The death roll was spicy with jalapenos but not too hot. I would order it again. I'm only giving it one star based on the service. We never ate. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the menu and asked the wait staff for any suggestion. Her response was any of the rolls are good. Which was not helpful. So we ordered the sashimi 12 piece. She later returned to ask us which one the dinner or the 12 piece? I asked what's the difference? She said the dinner if half raw half cooked. Feeling puzzled I asked isn't sashimi usually raw? I think she was puzzled too! We ended up canceling the order and leaving. I felt like I was at a chain restaurant, with minimum wage employees who do not know the menu or even what they are serving. AINT NO BODY GOT TIME FOR THAT! My sister and brother in law finished their meals and I still was not served my salad or sushi roll. Apparently, my order was forgotten but no one acknowledge that. No apology, NOTHING. Straight up shady customer service. We sat right next to the kitchen where the waitress walked up and down. Our waitress never asked us how we are doing or updates on our meal. She ignored us 90% percent of the time. We had to flag her down. B please, if you can't remember an order that you wrote down twice and was reminded 2x, GTFO. Like really, go find a new profession. So, after watching my family finish their meals, I asked to have my lunch to go. When I opened the Styrofoam box, there was a hair inside! OMG! They must hate me for telling them that they forgot my meal! WTF. Are you serious? I opened my salad and the dressing in the container looked like someone hacked a loogey and spit into it. GROSS. For the price of $13-14 my sushi roll was small portioned, SOUR (WHY IS IT SO SOUR), and it was missing cucumber, avocado, and soft shell crab! Instead of crab, they substituted it with tempura shrimp. I did not pay $14 for below average tasting food. If they had apologized, all would have been forgiven, but they acted like nothing happened. I am not a big sushi eater. well pretty much not. But I came here for my birthday and tried the Poki and it was really good. not fishy at all. Also had the sweet baby roll. which is just a seaweed wrap with onions, shrimp, cream cheese, peppers and some crunch stuff it was so good! the waiting time is insane. must of sat for an hour before getting food. Without a doubt, Kampai offers the freshest, most flavorful sushi around. And they always accommodate our special requests. The food is really good, but the service Sucks! We have NEVER been served both of our meals at the same time. And on our latest visit our appetizer alone took 40 minutes.....and it didn't even need to be cooked!!! I think we'll take a break from this place for a while. Went in for lunch and found the sushi to be bright and fresh, though a bit lacking in flavor. Wasn't the best sushi I have ever had (even in Redding) but the price was decent. The serving staff seems to know very little about sake, as it was served hot which is a BIG no-no. Good sake should be lukewarm and no one we experienced during our visit seemed to know this. Stale rice and imitation crab meat. The fish was very dry and under prepared. Sliced so thick and dehydrated. I will never spend another dime of my hard earned money at this establishment. With my unsatisfactory meal came the bill. 90 dollars . I voiced my opinion publicly to the chef and owner. How they can honestly charge so much for the crap that they serve. My wife and I visited Kampai last night, first time we had been there in a few years and we were craving sushi. Good choice! We actually checked the reviews on Yelp before visiting, and stopped at another place first, but it didn't look good so we went to Kampai. We ordered drinks and the spicy edamame to start, which was delicious. Then we had the Caterpillar roll and the John roll - both were fantastic. I was still hungry so we ordered some rice, an order of salmon sushi (which was OK), and shrimp tempura (nice batter, fresh shrimp - awesome). We had a nice chat with Nalah (super friendly, attentive and engaging), who suggested the caterpillar roll, and with the owner, who steered us to the John roll. The service was great. Overall, we really enjoyed what was a very relaxing and tasty evening. We'll definitely be back. read more

I've had hit and miss experiences here the last couple of years. Decided to give it another chance. Ordered a Chicken Don, miso soup, and a side of their avocado dressing, was told 10 minutes. Stopped by Fresh Fire Grill for my other order on the way. Arrived within 30 minutes. My boyfriend walked in, wasn't greeted, all the employees were sitting there eating McDonalds. He had to ask who worked there. They hadn't even started the order. Ran his card for 26.82. He came out to tell me, my simple rice dish with a small miso and dressing was 27$. I told him NO WAY, it was before 4pm and still lunch pricing. Even at dinner pricing there's no way it could be almost 30$. He asked for a refund, as they didn't even have the order ready as promised. The employees were incredibly rude. Refunded his card the amount -1.00$. Still waiting for refund to process on card two days later. What an effing joke this place has become. I use to love Kampai. NEVER AGAIN. read more
