My boyfriend and I were driving from SF to Portland and stopped at Kampai since we always enjoy finding new restaurants on Yelp and of course avoiding fast food. Kampai was AAAA-mazing and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I'm a vegetarian and used to your typical cucumber roll, avocado roll, i.e. one or two vegetables with rice. Let's just say I was blown away when Sam (super friendly!) the sushi chef, made me a special vegetarian roll. He let me taste a few different sauces and I requested asparagus and avocado ... the rest was up to him. My eyes bulged when I saw the roll. It looked like the fish rolls I was always envious of ... TONS of ingredients, drizzled with different sauces, perfect presentation. The roll was even better than it looked. Yum. My boyfriend also loved his rolls. We agreed that it was the BEST sushi we ever had, and we eat a lot of sushi in SF. The only downside is they are closed on Sunday. I go here for sushi the most in Redding because the hours are better than my favorite choice. That is the only reason. The food is pretty good, but the thing that gets me is the service. Everytime I go here, it could be the last time. They forget my food so much that it's a joke now with my friends when we go. If for some reason you don't know what something is, don't bother asking. The servers do not know. They will have to go ask the cook. So if you do go here, just expect to have the worst service ever, and don't let that bother you, and you will enjoy. My mom and I came the kampai for dinner. I have eaten here a few times before and it was always just ok, but we decided to try it again. I regret giving them another chance, and I won't make that mistake again. I ordered the chicken teriyaki dinner, simple enough. When it came, there was three tiny pieces of chicken mixed in with soggy slimy zucchini and bell peppers. My first thought was I didn't order stir fry, but the waiter assured us that it was there teriyaki chicken dinner bento box. Gross. For a chicken teriyaki dinner, you would think that it would actually have chicken in it. I have had a lot of chicken teriyaki bento boxes, and never have I ever been served something like that. Mediocre sushi at best. As for the teriyaki chicken...it was just okay. The sauce was strange and didn't really taste right. The chicken was lukewarm and the veggies were cold. If I could leave this business with no stars, that's exactly what I would do. I've been here a few times and I've always said their customer service is pretty terrible. The food, great! Well, this past visit was awful. Their menu is so hard to navigate through and some descriptions are so vague. A friend of mine ordered the Num Roll and the description states everything that was in it, and then just said & sauce. No description of what type of sauce or anything of that sort. When she received her roll the sauce was so spicy she could not eat it. At all. She told the waitress and she simply replied with "most people assume there's sauce on it" well the issue wasn't that there was sauce on it, it's that it was unbearably spicy and did not clarify that in the description. She went to talk to Sam and his resolution for the problem was that he would remake it and charge for one and a half rolls. She didn't eat a single piece and wanted to charge her for two rolls! WHAT?! Next, I specifically ordered the princess roll because it was one of the few that didn't say it had shrimp in it. (I'm very allergic) when I got my roll I was very surprised to find shrimp in it. I told the waitress that it didn't say it had shrimp and I'm allergic, i could not eat the roll. Well. All but two of their rolls say shrimp and these two say Ebi (raw shrimp that is not deep fried according to the waitress) I guess it's my fault for not speaking Japanese and knowing that the only two rolls that didn't say "shrimp" HAD SHRIMP?! She went to talk to Sam about this one as well and he refused to make me a new roll. He also wanted to charge me for two rolls! When we asked to speak to him he refused that as well. Instead had two of his 18 year old waitresses do his dirty work. His customer service, contrary to what most people have said, is absolutely terrible. He couldn't even explain why he wanted to charge us for extra rolls when we hadn't even touched the first ones! I will not be returning, and I will stop recommending this place to anyone who asks. read more

I have always liked sushi but when i encountered on Kampai Sushi a couple years ago; it made me love it even more. The main reason i like Kampai is because its variety and the choices it has to offer. Each of their rolls has a special and unique sauce to it that all other sushi bars can't top. Their sauses are one of a kind. It makes my mouth water just by thinking about it. The fish their is really fresh and you can't go wrong ordering their rolls or just enjoying their sashimi. Kampai has been open for 17 years. The staff is very friendly and the service is prompt. The hours are Tuesday-Saturday (11:00a.m.-9:00p.m.) Recently Kampai has taken on new owners but the service is still top-notch and the food is outstanding. The new sushi chefs are really friendly. This is a very good place to take your date, your family or just yourself to enjoy some sushi. Kampai always makes you feel welcome. Kampai is probably my favorite restaurant in Redding, My husband and I go there as often as we can and we have never been disappointed , they make the best miso soup I have ever had and they're very reasonably priced, for $7.95 at lunch time you can a bento special that comes with rice, miso soup, salad, tempura, gyoza and your choice of a main dish. All of the salad dressings are great, the waitresses are very friendly and helpful and at the back of the menu they have pictures of all the food, so you can see it before you order it. My husband and I will definitely continue to patronize this wonderful little restaurant. read more

I've been eating at Kampai since 1984. It was small and very personal then, and Maggie the beautiful waitress made everyone happy with her service. The cooks would greet each client and knew many of us by name. The fresh quality fish always pleased, and the rolls are always incredible. BEWARE -- I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to because people need to be aware of a potential SCAM. The calculated tip guide (15%/18%/20% at the bottom of the check) is INCORRECT. On our check, for example, it said "15% = $16.50" -- that looked high, so I checked and 15% of the total (not subtotal) was actually $10. The two other calculations for 18 and 20% were also very significantly inflated. When I confronted the owner regarding this, he said, "oh yeah, don't pay attention to that, the girl who programmed it entered it wrong." The waitresses also seemed to know the calculations were off when they saw me bring this up. This is what clearly motivated me to write this review, however it is also worth noting that the food is mediocre at best. Additionally, the service is poor. For example, often the wait staff did not know where to bring dishes. Additionally, wasabi and fresh ginger did not come with our Maki rolls. Ugh. Bad place. read more

I'm always on the lookout for a good sushi restaurant, so when I saw this place I decided to give it a try. The building was kind of dingy and the smell of deep frying oil greeted my senses. I was addressed by a waitress and offered a menu for take-out. I made my selections and she told me it would be "a little bit of a wait" as they only had one sushi chef on staff, but another one would be arriving shortly. The "little wait" turned into forty-plus minutes of my patience growing thin. During this time, other customers showed up and began eating within ten minutes of their arrival. Meanwhile, I was practically ignored and not given any update on why it was taking so long, and the stench of stale cooking oil began to make me nauseous. Two women showed up and announced that they were there for a phoned-in to-go order. They were promptly given a receipt to sign and told to wait while their order finished. Ten minutes later, a woman rushed from the kitchen and shoved a bag of food into my hands and told me to have a good evening. The waitress came out and told her that I wasn't the right customer and the other woman apologized and took the food back. I tried to ask her how much longer it would be for my food, but she disappeared just as quickly as she had come. Eventually, my waitress returned to where I sat, hastily slid the receipt and pen to me and muttered, "Sorry for the wait", before scurrying off elsewhere. About five minutes later, she returned with my food, plopped it onto the table, and left without a word. Towards the end there, she acted like me being there was an inconvenience. I get it if you're short-staffed, but an explanation of expected wait times for food would go a long way in these situations. Customer service doesn't seem to be a strong suit here. The only redeeming factor was their sushi. Every item I ordered was delicious. Not quite worth the wait, but delicious nonetheless. read more

You sent out Ebi Caviar the was drowning in mayonnaise and you are serving days old fish! You got caught and I wasn't going to pay for something that could make me very sick. You killed what Randy & Jamie worked so hard to build, nice job. Oh, by the way Sam, several prominent people I know will never go back again after recently getting sick!!! I would truly look into a Serve Safe Class for YOU and YOUR Staff!!! Diner beware! Shame on you Sam, you killed Kampai! My, advice is to go back to the roach infested restaurant that you came from, it's what you do best!!! It's just another Tokyo Gardens off of Lake Blvd. Make no mistake, I am going to the Shasta County Health Dept and I am going to file a formal complaint against your restaurant. Along with the business came the original recipes to everything that Rand & Jamie developed, now this being said, Soo promptly quit using them and went to trendy crap that they are serving now. Soo almost killed the business by cutting corners and going to the cheap way and his brother Sam bought the business. My fiance and I have been craving sushi since moving to Redding from Southern California. We decided to try this place out due to the many positive reviews and the 4 star rating. The restaurant is small or for kinder words, more intimate. The menu is ridiculously retarded. I understand the need to provide a variety of sushi to please the many palates but 4 pages of cream cheese roll of which it appeared a majority of them were duplications but with different customer names. It's just ridiculous! I hate trashing restaurants, it's not my Yelping style. I guess I was just a little more than disappointed about the food. It also didn't help that my fiance and I got both felt like we were getting heart burns or nausea after eating sushi. How does that happen?? Well, Kampai is two stars. "Meh. I've experienced better." The service is superior to the Tokyo Garden on Hilltop, where service was poor and almost ruined the experience. I hate to say this, but our dinners at Tokyo Garden were better, though we may not go back. Service at Kampai was quite prompt. I had sashimi. But the waitress could not describe the fish that would make up the sashimi dinner. The sashimi was somewhat tasty, but the pieces were quite large. Two guests had sushi and were pleased with their servings. Another guest had tempura which I tasted and though it may have been fried in oil that should have been changed a bit ago. It wasn't crisp, verged on soggy and lacked taste. Do not order the cucumber salad. It is a bowl packed with uninteresting cucumber slices, enough to feed two people, with a nondescript vinegar dressing. The miso soup is broth without tofu or onion. The restaurant itself is small perhaps 6 tables or so seating 25 folks max. The dining area is clean. The staff is attentive. We had a pleasant evening, but I'm uncertain as to whether Kampai is a keeper for us. read more

And for the first year, the new owners seemed to care about the quality and service and did a reasonable job - although the new menu is far too busy and less traditional....lots of sauces, the actual sushi quality is not as good. Lately, they have really taken a downward turn :( Placemats and menus were sticky and dirty (YUK!), rice was undercooked, quality still slipping. Ok so my experience here was quite awkward. I sat at the sushi bar which looked like a make shift counter that I'd find in one of my buddy's basements. The chef didn't bother to say hi nor make eye contact with me, and then I was handed a menu which the lady then disappeared. This place is tiny and most of the tables were full, so I guess they must have been busy. I think I sat there for at least 10 mins waiting to order, and finally I asked for a sheet to fill out what I wanted. I was told they don't do that here, and I had to order everything at once. Long story short, the sushi here is ok and appears to be fresh; but don't expect much. I had some scallop roll, the tuna, yellow tail, french halibut, and Goya, The bill came to $31 including a 20% tip which I'm not so sure why I was so generous. For 50 bucks with tip, we got a combination plate (soup,salad, 9-piece sushi, & teriyaki beef with veggies), spicy tuna roll, chicken & veggie entree (also included miso soup & salad), gyoza, plus two beers and a soda. Pretty freaking fantastic food for a very good price. All of our food was great. The spicy tuna had a great sauce, the gyoza was crispy on the inside and juicy with flavor on the inside. The last time I went there for dinner and we asked if we could have a roll made with mango, just surprise us with the rest. They came out with one of the best rolls I have ever had!
