Sushi is a tough decision when going to a new place but when a friend has it as a go to it's easier to take that chance. Glad we did. It was fresh and plentiful. This place has never disappointed me with take out! They have great deals for lunch and always find myself getting the two sushi roll lunch special. I love the spicy salmon and the white spicy tuna. Where I live, every sushi bar offers AYCE, and just about all of it is great. If Kama Sushi were in Reno it wouldn't measure up, but I will say it is not without its merits, hence the 3-Star rating. That said, this is one where I wish we could do 2.5, mainly because I just didn't find the quality of the fish or cooked dishes to be that great. I'm a sushi purist and prefer nigiri, so that's where I started. Overall, the pieces of nigiri were HUGE. Way bigger than they needed to be, and the rice to fish ratio here is off, meaning there's a large rice ball beneath a relatively thin slice of fish. These are clear indications that this is a place looking to fill you up fast, with rice. Worth noting is that they also offer sashimi on the AYCE menu, a real rarity. The slices were nice and generally good, but the albacore was mushy and weird, turning me off from the rest. Rolls were the clear winner here, and if I can offer one tip it would be to get handrolls if you like them. The softshell crab roll was large and had a lot of fried softshell in it. The simple sounding rolls also came with a solid portion of fish and veggies wrapped in a thin layer of rice and nori. The handrolls were BURSTING at the seams! The cooked menu from the kitchen was very extensive, so we ordered a few tempura items, yakitori and a miso eggplant. All in all, just ok. Tempura had a heavy grease flavor to it that wasn't desirable, the yakitori over cooked and over sauces, and the miso eggplant had WAY too much miso too. Several soups caught my attention but I had to pass because I was too full. All in all it's a-ok as the rating implies. read more

As far as all you can eat sushi places go - this one is one of the better ones I've been to. I should preface by saying I typically do not like an all you can eat anything because it's usually much lower quality ingredients in the food. That being said, I visited here with a group of 5 for lunch on NYE. The sushi was not bad by any means but again the ingredients aren't as fresh and high quality as a regular sushi spot. We did love the butterfly roll - great combo of savory and sweet. We also split the fried Oreos for dessert and oh my goodness they were SO good! I would return just for those 2 items alone. Overall, the service was attentive but each time we filled out the order card the sushi served was never correct. We would get more of rolls we wanted less of and vice versa. Parking is also a bit limited unless you park around back and walk. Final verdict - For $20 a person, you really can't go wrong and this really is a decent place for this style of sushi. read more

$20 all you can eat on Friday and Saturday! Dined with some friends here on a Friday night and they had a steady crowd for most of the night. This restaurant is on Main Street in Stratford. Luckily we were able to get a parking spot right outside. It is also walking distance from the Metro North train station. They had a ton of options on the all you can eat menu, including sushi and other food (for those who don't like sushi). My favorite roll was the mango roll. The mango flavor was not too overpowering and delicious! I thought the sushi was super fresh and tasty. The waitresses did a good job of refilling our waters and handing out menus when we wanted 2nd and 3rd rounds. For dessert, make sure to get the fried oreos with ice cream! Coming from a New Yorker, this sushi is pretty darn solid... for the price. Generally, in New York there is your "neighborhood sushi spot" that is cheap (as far as sushi goes) which can be bad to decent but generally never higher than decent; and then there are the Omakase/high-end spots with not a lot in between (broad strokes). I would put Kama in the high end of the neighborhood sushi spots. My entire review should again be predicated on the $25/person AYCE price tag - this isn't Jiro Dreams of Sushi but then again it doesn't cost nearly that much so it can't really be compared. Usually a bellweather for me is on the amount of rolls that have "spicy xyx" in them because that tells me that the quality of the fish is low and only good enough for spicy variety. There were lots of spicy options but there were also a few good fish rolls which were enjoyable. Sashimi was good enough for the price and we left satisfied for our sushi craving. I'd give 4 stars for the food. I took off one star to make it 3 stars because of the service - most dishes were dropped onto the table to noticeably bang on the tabletop, sushi wasn't explained which roll was which, plates were taken without asking if you were done. It definitely wasn't bad enough to make me not want to go back and nobody was rude, but these were easy things that could have made the experience better. Really stinks that I am writing this review. I loved mama but they have gone down hill and last night was the last bad experience I ever want to have with them. Website and window say close at 10pm. Group of 3 people walk in at 850pm... not greeted just stared at from the back of the restaurant. Finally a very nice girl came over and said they close at 9... we say your door and website say 10... ohhhh ummm well we stop seating at 9... we were here before 9.... We'll, oh yeah well we stop seating a little before 9... can we order just food to go (mind you the place had a good amount of people and they were still taking the papers from people seated), oh no sorry the chefs have to eat ... ... ... word for word conversation... This isn't the first bad experience but will be my last. It's a shame because I work for a very large company in town and we always order very large orders, but I think I will suggest we take our business elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend and I consistently come and give this place service and, what we are assuming is the owner, is always rude to us for no reason. We are nothing but polite and courteous and she is always cold. We even try and be overly nice with her and she always gives us attitude. We have no idea why. I'm used to getting less than stellar service at Kama. I feel this is because it has an all you can eat option. However today's service was exceptionally poor. Three friends and I went in for lunch after having a wonderfully relaxing yoga class. Three of the four of us got the all you can eat. The fourth party didn't because she only wanted a California roll. This less adventurous eater was convinced by us to try a piece of shumai. We were then scolded by the staff for sharing a piece with someone at the table who didn't order all you can eat. Things came to a head when two of us ordered red bean ice cream. They've served two scoops in one bowl. We asked for a second bowl and were met with confusion and an attitude. Why couldn't we just share ice cream from the same bowl? Because we were on opposite sides of the table. Then we asked for an extra spoon so we didn't have to mix flavors (we ordered more than red bean ice cream). They assumed we were trying to share the ice cream with our non all you can eat compadre. Finally after the spoon was brought the entire staff engaged in conversation over the request and stared us down to ensure we didn't share the ice cream. Is always busy, what means the food is good, but the kitchen does close around 9:30 pm. Not so great for larger groups, but perfect for a party of four. This place is right across from my frequent restaurant haunt in Stratford, so it was easy to get to. Parking can be sort of annoying, but it was a Wednesday night, so it wasn't that bad. It's the same owner/menu/servers as Sushi House in Rocky Hill - which meant we were in for familiarity and good sushi. It didn't disappoint. While it would have been interesting to make a "Stratford" roll (instead of keeping the Rocky Hill roll on the menu), we ate more than enough and definitely got our money's worth. Because I'm in Stratford a handful of times per year, I think I'd definitely be going back - but in general, it's worth the extra drive to get better quality sushi and better service than some of the other options in the much closer Hamden/New Haven area. read more
