This is one of the only local locksmiths that carry a replacement lock cylinder for the electronic gates commonly found in San Francisco. Gone to other stores and nobody from Home Depot, Lowes or even a few American Locksmiths carry such a thing, and their prices reflect it. They wanted $100 for the cheaper, no name model. And over $120 for a Kwikset. This is just the cylinder and 2 keys, so add more to that price when considering copies and labor if someone doesn't know how to install it. read more

POOR WORK ETHIC / WORKMANSHIP Paid to repair a faulty lock, but after trying unsuccessfully for 20 minutes, they gave up and left. Tried getting them to come back and finish the job, but they said something along the lines of "that's as good as it's going to get" without offering a refund. Let's start with what the natural law of locksmithery says should have happened: 4 keys + An Order for 2 Sets = 12 Keys, and in particular (1 orginal + 2 Copies) x 4. This is what happened at Kam Wan Key Locksmith's: 4 keys + An Order for 2 Sets = 12 keys: 3 working originals, 7 copies of lord knows what, 1 working copy, and 1 mystery key. To be fair, I have not returned to speak to them about the problem, so I cannot say how they would handle a refund or figuring out the problem. read more

This place gets 5 stars because they saved me!!! One Sunday morning, my roommate had gone out of town to LA for the weekend and I was at home, doing laundry and getting ready to go out for the day. I popped downstairs in my apartment building while in my pjs and slippers to check on my clothes before my friend arrived to pick me up. I had unlocked my front door as I was only going to be gone at most for 30 seconds. I checked on my clothes, ran back up to my apartment and I went to open it and I just about crapped my pants. The door was locked. Shit. Holy shit. I ran downstairs to see if I could find something in the garage of the building to open the door and I couldn't find anything. So I sat in front of the building doors waiting for my friend to pull up. Luckily she arrived within minutes and I signaled to her to come in. I told her "I locked myself out of my apartment. I have no cell phone, no keys and my roommate's out of town." Remember, I'm in my pjs. So we go in the garage and look again for anything to stick in the key hole. My friend even went in her car to see if she had anything. I found some little thinging to poke in the hole and we tired for 10 minutes and nothing. So my friend said she'd try to drive down the street and find a locksmith that was open. And that's when Kam Wan Key Locksmith came to the rescue. It's was hilarious because my friend drove up 3 minutes later with this overweight, random, Asian guy in her passenger seat. It laughed a little because it was a sight to see. She found him down the street and caught him right before they were going to close up. The guy worked his magic and was able to unlock my apartment door. I was happiest person ever!!! We drove him back to the place and in my pjs, walked into the center and paid the $60 for unlocking my apartment. I don't know if that's what they charge people normally or if that's crazy cheap. Either way, he gave me his card in case I needed their help again (they're on call 24/7 if you get locked out of your car or place). I've only been here twice to get duplicates made, and while the price was reasonable and the service was quick, the older woman who made my keys both times was incredibly rude. She basically threw my finished keys on the counter and grunted with her back to me when I said "thank you". A tiny key and locksmith shopfront in the Outer Sunset. I prefer to go to Kam Wan b/c it's run by 2 older, small Chinese people that remind me of my grandparents. Miniature buddhas and little birds in cages are surrounded by smokey incense and the calming sound of trickling water. My favorite thing about Kam Wan is the small koi fish stamp that the proprietor embosses onto the keys, aesthetically pleasing and making it easier to identify similar looking keys. Very great service! I lost my keys this morning and wanted to change my keys to make sure no one can use my lost keys to open my door. I called them and they suggested me change the key instead of changing the lock. I sent them the pictures of my doors and they responded with a quote very fast. I hate to give this place a low rating because it's a mom and pop business and I'm a huge proponent for such but I had a key copied here and it was very difficult to use. Now, I tried to give it a week or two- maybe I just needed to break it in, that didn't work either. Make sure that whomever does your key takes the rubber holder off the key itself. The man who did my key at Kam Wan didn't. Maybe it was my bad for not telling him to take it off/taking it off myself but I'll wager to say locksmiths should know better. Walked in and out in less than 10 minutes with duplicate keys so for fast service this places gets a 5. The owners are a Cantonese couple whose English is not great. As a result we communicated in semi-Cantonese semi mandarin to solve our problem. She is worried that we will make her pay for the duplicate key (that we brought) so we had to write it down to say we wouldn't. Not sure why that's such a big deal. I broke my key off in the lock at 7pm last night, a very cold and rainy night. When all I wanted to do was get inside to be warm and dry. They were at my home within 30 minutes from my call and had my door opened, repaired the lock and fixed the problem with the door which caused the key to break. She charged me $1.50 per key and gave me a receipt. The second day, I realized that i needed an additional of keys for my gates. The elderly man made the keys. Unfortunately, he did not do what the lady did...He gave me two silver keys and charged $4.35 and no receipt. Sigh...I wasn't too happy but I am supporting a mom and pop business. He didn't understand that I had requested different colors and did not give me a receipt. On top of that, one of the keys did not open the gate. I went back right away. The elderly lady was there. I was so happy to see her. She took the non-functional key and made some adjustments. It worked. I didn't want to cost them more money so I did not ask them to rekey in a different color. 6/12/2019 Unfortunately, Today I had to make an extra trip and pay extra. She did not honor the fact that she keyed the wrong key. Task was simple..make one copy of a set of keys. She made one key that worked the second key did not work. So I went back at the end of my work day and asked her to rekey. She would not. She asked me to pay for another key. So each key cost $1.63 x 3. The total cost is a much but the cost of my time is too costly. I would like to support mom and pop business but I like things to be accurate and businesses to fix the errors they make. The lady didn't give me a receipt during my first trip but she did give one for my third key. I just have bad luck with this store. Other people have better luck with them. Last time when I locked myself out, this locksmith came in a white van with his Chinese wife and son (I guess) within 20 minutes and spent less than a minute unlocking our front door. This time I decided to use his service again. I called the number posted on Yelp and a Chinese man (perhaps the same guy as last time) answered the phone and said he would come soon. Not long after that, I received a text from a different cell phone number verifying my address. I thought it might be his son's number. 20 minutes later two scruffy young guys (not the ones we used the service before) showed up and demanded $200 for the same service, more than twice what we paid last time. When I balked at the price, one of the guys became threatening, and I called the whole thing off. He then told me that there was a $50 service fee for them to come out. I informed them that nothing was discussed during the phone call, and they eventually gave up trying to milk me for money and left. This felt like a shake down, pretty crazy experience considering we had such a positive experience with this same business last time. Really disappointed this time. read more

The first place on taraval was a general hardware store so they were not able to duplicate the key I wanted. I drove to Noriega, parked by Walgreens and 5 min + 2.50 plus tax later, it's done. Since my key was atypical I asked if it didn't work I can bring it back. Yes, I can and it was stamped with their workmanship. I needed a front gate cylinder rekeyed. Once I explained this to them and we agreed on what I needed they did the work in 15 minutes counting cutting 4 keys. They even dug around to find two screws I had to drill out to remove the lock. Total price about $25.00. Much cheaper than the $100.00 plus to replace the lock. Having dealt with locksmiths for years I found them very knowledgeable. The store is very funky and the mom and pop atmosphere is great right down to the young boy in his gi. read more

Quick, cheap, open till 8PM and they get the job done well. I came in to make a couple copies of my house keys and the process couldn't have been easier. I think I was only in the shop for about 5 minutes total. One nice little extra touch is that they had a fish symbol engraved on the keys they made for me so I could easily tell which ones were the originals and which ones were freshly made. They're key making skills aren't all that great. You may have to go back to have the keys re-cut even if it is cheap. I really felt ripped off when I went there recently to purchase a new lock for my mailbox. They charged me $15 for a lock which I found later at home depot for $6. don't mind helping out the small mom and pop store but with pricing like that, I would give Lowes and home depot the business next time. read more
