I saw the sign across the street. Grand Opening. So it appears that there are new owners for a new restaurant. I am thinking to myself. They have limited dim sum for now. The custards look ok but I haven't tried it yet. They got my order wrong but too late and far to go back. I asked for soft gau gee with vegtablea and gravy. I did not want noodles. Oh well. Mind you this is Kailua not town. For Chinese I never would consider eating in Kailua. Kailua House has me eating my words. Finally a restaurant that will not make me want to drive to town to eat chinese. It's not your typical local Cantonese or Hong Kong style. It's somewhere in between but the flavors are from what I've experienced on point. It's new ownership and the staff is attentive. The ambiance is old school, nothing fancy and who cannot love that old exterior. It's the food however that will keep me coming back. Thus far there is nothing I've tried that I didn't like. Kailua House just opened in May 2024 after (New) Chinese Garden closed in April 2024. Kailua House did close for a few days to do a little renovation in the Kitchen and part of the front area. The restaurant still had the same look as the previous restaurant and nothing fancy. Owners and their families were really nice. They have their new menu out and if you don't happen to see your favorites dishes on the menu, you can let them know and if they have the ingredients, they can make it. There are some dishes Sandy pointed out to me if I was interested in their chef special of beef or pork gyudon or Oxtail soup. Also mentioned they may have some pho available later. Sandy had a Pho restaurant before. Kailua House plans to have dim sum soon to order and Manapua. The family business (Sister & brother with their families) previously own several restaurant businesses before in town and Kailua. I'm looking forward to their dim sum to go. We need a dim sum place in Kailua. The place was really casual yet cozy. They have a nice private parking lot! Sandy, one of the partner, was really nice and helpful. I ordered the char siu and duck combo. Although it wasn't the best I've tried, it was flavorful and good. Looking forward in trying the other dishes and dim sum later. read more

Sadly disappointing. My husband saw this place on Cheap Eats soon after it opened so I was excited to give it a try. I ordered the lunch plate to sample a variety: crispy fried chicken, beef & broccoli chow mein, kau yuk, crispy gau gee, white rice. Plus mango smoothie to drink. The service was slow and inattentive. In fact, I overheard the servers apologizing to a few people in the restaurant for delays and such since the place is under new ownership and working out a few issues. By the time my lunch arrived, it was cold. Our server hadn't provided utensils, napkins or asked if we needed anything else (like mustard). The gau gee was extra crispy (almost burned) but at least that was still warm and the meat inside flavorful. Sadly, the gau gee and the rice were the tastiest things on my plate. The beef was rubbery, the pork too sweet, noodles dry even though floating in sauce, and the broccoli tips soggy. Worst of all, after I tasted everything I realized there was a crack in my plate! Cracks in dishes are breeding grounds for bacteria that can contaminate food. Glad I didn't eat most of it. Even my mango smoothie was bland and didn't taste much like mango. I only drank half of it. The floor was dirty and the whole place looked like it could use a good scrubbing. And hey Cheap Eats, this place wasn't cheap either at $44 for two lunch plates with beverages. My friend didn't think the food was that bad and said she liked the noodles. She felt the place rated two stars instead of the one star I would give, maybe because she arrived much hungrier than me. My friend also took home my mostly uneaten meat for her dog. Maybe he won't be as disappointed as I was. read more

Kailua needs a decent Chinese restaurant. Kailua House is definitely not it. For starters, the place needs to undergo a deep cleaning and cosmetic repairs to make it less gross to sit in. The dishes contained the right ingredients but every one was ruined by the cook or packing! The broccoli in the beef was overcooked to the point of being brown and soggy. The wonton mein was absolutely tasteless. The soup tasted like the water they used to cook the noodles. The only vegetables in the dish was cabbage. The sweet sour fish had potential but the decision to pour through sauce over the fish for a take out order was a tragic move. The fish was so soggy that it too was inedible. I'm Chinese so I really wanted to like this place and support a new Chinese restaurant. I won't be back unless there is a new cook and the place is cleaned up. read more

What a wonderful Chinese New Year's Eve we had at Kailua House! The food was tasty and fresh. We loved everything we ordered from gau chi to har gow to char siu bao (I believe the baked ones were the best mana pua I ever had in Hawai'i) to pork hash and crispy shrimp. We ordered from Kailua House for a Chinese New Year party for 20 people. The owners were super helpful in choosing the right combination of dishes and in the correct amounts. Everyone loved the food. Gau gee, spring rolls and manapua were big hits, as were the beef chow fun and orange chicken. The food was ready on time for pickup and still warm. I ordered take out. I am really sorry to say I've never had worse Chinese Food...anywhere The Won Tons in their Wonton Mein tasted so off I actually had to spit it out. In over 60 years of eating Won Ton Mein in Hawaii that would be a first. I also had Kun Pao Tofu. It was so over salted it hurt my mouth & they used fermented Tofu. The menu never mentioned that it was fermented. I hate stinky but otherwise, as a basically vegetarian eater, love Tofu. This dish was completely inedible. After being opened for a week I thought the food might be tasty. Boy, was I disappointed. First of all, there was not a single soul in there, and the phone didn't ring once while I was there. I decided to order a few different kinds of foods just to get an idea of what this place would be all about. The first thing I noticed is that the items are about $1-2 dollars more than the average restaurant. I ordered Won Ton Soup, Salt and Pepper Pork Chop, and Cold Ginger Chicken. The pork chop was overcooked and thrown in the container in a sloppy way (I guess presentation doesn't matter). The Ginger Chicken was sitting in oil with the ginger, and the onion was dry sitting atop the chicken. They did not grate the Ginger good as there were tons of that hairy stringy part everywhere. The soup was bland along with the vegetables, and I could literally drink the mustard straight out of the container because it was so watery. The floor was dull and dirty, and the chairs looked like it had loose fitting cloth. You would think that new owners might make things look clean and new. This is my second review We ordered some different dishes which are worth mentioning The roast duck rice noodle plate (dry, no gravy) was really really good. I am guessing the other rice noodle plates are equally as good. We also ordered the shrimp with vegetables--nicely cooked, not overdone with good sized shrimp. Delicious. Sweet sour spareribs were good too. Ordered the General Tso's chicken which was good but probably better to eat there as the sauce made it less crispy. Overall very good. My husband commented that the quality of the ingredients seems higher than other Chinese restaurants. I hope they make it in Kailua! read more

I tried the wun tun mein from here. That's usually a good indication of whether the food is great or not. In this case, someone posted months ago that they tried the wun tun mein and it was tasteless. I agree. It looks good but a big something is missing from the soup stock. Almost like they forgot some important ingredient. That's it for me - no more wun tun mein from here again. The former owners (New Chinese Garden) had the taste down pat and I loved it. But not these guys. I don't think they have taste buds. Never again. Maybe some of their other offerings are good but I'd hate to spend my hard-earned money to find out. We found this restaurant looking for parking. The food was amazing. We ordered Chatsu Manaoua steamed and baked. Then we ordered a plate lunch and dinner plate. I ordered a minute chicken on cake noodles and a roast duck on cake noodles. The chicken plate was delicious - the chicken, the noodles, vegetables and the sauce! But the roast duck looked awfully pathetic and dry, dry, dry and tasteless. We probably won't order that again for quite a while. Also got two steamed manapua. The bun was thick and kind of tasteless and dry but the filling was spot on. They didn't have any the half moon or siu mai which I was hoping to taste. However, someone else was having the soft gau gee mein plate - now that looked good. I'll just give this place a few more weeks to get their act together.
