    Tonkotsu Ramen
    Zack S.

Walking into Kaiba, I had big hopes... after all, it's among the top rated Yelp restaurants around. That said, just like going to see a movie that you're excited to see in advance, I'm fully aware that my hopes may have tainted my review a little. Before I go too far off course, let me say it was a solid four and may have been a five without the hopes and a couple of small things. Gwen and I were tired after a long week and wanted to have a nice dinner together. So we pulled up our Empty Nester Yelp list, to see what was close by and also fairly well rated, that we hadn't visited yet. We both love Ramen so we were excited to check out Kaiba. And since it is in La Verne, it was a good option because it's right next-door to us. First impressions were good. It's in a clean strip mall setting and the atmosphere was nice. We didn't wait long, and we were immediately greeted by a friendly server. We were told of the specials and surprised that you could get a $.99 beer, so I got that of course. When they brought the beer out, it looked like a $.99 beer - it was in quite a small glass. As opposed to a former sushi place, we loved where you could get a tall Sapporo during happy hour for four dollars which felt more worth it. Probably good to mention the size but overall, I could've ordered more if I wanted to. We both ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen and shared a basic salad and basic eel roll. The salad was fine, nothing special. The roll was as expected also nothing special but that's OK. It was a basic roll. It was presented a little messy on the plate. When the Ramen came, it looked pretty and smelled great and we were excited to dive in. First thing I noticed was plastic utensils in the form of a soup spoon and I believe the Ramen is in a plastic bowl - black plastic at that. Two big reasons I don't want plastic for my food maybe three. First, it doesn't retain heat. The Ramen was warm-hot, not hot. That's understandable being served in any plastic bowl. Second, this is nearly a five star Yelp restaurant and you're serving food on plastic dishes. I personally try to avoid as much plastic in my life as possible, especially when consuming hot items. And anyone with concerns about heating plastic and food health will tell you that black plastic is certainly want to avoid. I mentioned it to Gwen and because she's so sweet she said, maybe it's not plastic. But I'm pretty certain it is. The Ramen was pretty good - not the best I've ever had - but pretty solid. If I'm having Ramen or Pho, I want it hot. Not lukewarm and not warm-hot. Another issue was a lack of detail in service. We sat for about 20 minutes with all of our dirty dishes in front of us and it wasn't that busy. For those reasons, it was a four and in some ways I could even see close to a three. But these are easily fixable. Invest in proper dishes heated plastic is not good for your consumers nor does it look proper in terms of what you're trying to portray. And although the servers were nice, a little more presence would do. No one even asked if I wanted another tiny beer.

My favorite ramen spot to go to. It's fast delicious and comfortable and friendly. Check it out

Let me start off my saying 3 things. 1. This is a group rating, 2. Ambience/location was nice for a group lunch 3. Service was good. So food wise, it's a bit tricky. I got the salmon spicy roll and salad with a beer. Price wise, 5 stars, you can't beat a $1 beer. But the roll for me was a 3. The reason I mention a group rating is because the 3 guys that got the ramen bowls raved about it. I completely finished the lunch. And when I asked they said 5 stars. So between the good price point and the high rating on the ramen, I averaged it to a 4. If I come back I would definitely have to try the ramen lunch combo instead of sushi

Fresh sushi, great service, and amazing vibes. Best Japanese spot in town! Love it!!.

This place was a recommendation from a friend and boy it delivered! The food was super tasty, a fun selection of rolls beyond the traditional ones but still some old favorites. The wait staff was very attentive which I really appreciated. Nice quick date night spot.

I visited this restaurant with a bunch of coworkers since we left the office late. They were able to sit all seven of us quickly and the service was incredibly fast. The sushi was pretty good and the Udon was delicious. The broth was flavorful. The big thing is the value. This place is not that expensive and everything was delicious for the price.

My girlfriend and I have been on the hunt for a new ramen spot to try and landed on this, this past weekend. My plate wasn't bad, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm not a big fan of ramen so we usually try to find places that have bowls or something similar. I really liked the amount of chicken I was served. Compared to other places we've been this was a lot! I also tried my girlfriend's noodles and didn't care for them much, but then again I never do care for ramen. My plate also came with a California role, which I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would. My girlfriend enjoyed her plate, but wished it was spicier. All in all I really liked the amount of food we got. I also have to mention our waiter was super, super nice and attentive!

    Tuna poke bowl

Pros: HUGE specialty rolls -- one order is enough to share, or even make it your own meal. The prices are fair and reasonable for the large portion of food you get. We ordered the crispy rice spicy tuna appetizer and it was large and tasty! I think this + a salad + miso soup would be more than ample food. We also enjoyed the soft shell crab appetizer, a tuna poke bowl, and the Hungry Man roll -- all was delicious! Excellent, attentive, and friendly service with a smile. Ambiance: casual & clean, with ample seating. Free parking in a shopping lot. Con: surprisingly, there is no sushi combo on the menu. There is sashimi, sashimi combo, and even carpaccio made with raw fish, but no sushi combo, which I found a bit odd for a sushi joint. I was really craving some nigiri sushi in combo form.

If you love Garlic, Teriyaki and Ponzu sauce then this is your place. Only dined here for lunch. I tend to gravitate towards the same starters overtime I arrive here. Never disappointed and always a great dining experience.

Wanted to try a different sushi spot with the family, found Kaiba browsing Yelp. The staff here is super friendly (my mom thought we already knew each other) and our order came out very fast. Their roll selection was limited, but they clearly prioritize doing a few well over many poorly. Large, great ingredients, reasonably priced. Kids really enjoyed the beef udon. Seafood udon tasted fresh, not frozen which is unfortunately all too common. And the yellow tail carpaccio was wonderful!

    Tonkatsu ramen with extra meat
    Robbie M.

We really enjoyed our dinner here! The tonkatsu was one of the best we've had. We got extra meat, and that helped make it a good size for two of us to share. The servers were all super hospitable and kept checking in with us. The food took a reasonable amount of time and we were able to get in and out in less than an hour. And I checked in on Yelp to get free ice cream!

Recently visited for a late night Sunday dinner and enjoyed the service and food. I like that the menu isn't too overwhelming. I tried a few rolls and they were all delicious. My favorite had to be the Spicy Garlic Albacore Roll. The sauce was soo good. The fish was good quality and fresh. The spicy tuna on crispy rice appetizer was also really good. I also enjoyed the complimentary green tea with a check-in. Service was friendly and they checked up on us throughout the meal. It's also very fairly priced for what you get. Will definitely return!

It's just the best place. Period. The fish is always fresh, the ramen always slaps and the service is unmatched. Apollo last night was not only attentive and kind, he was a riot. We always take family and friends here because we trust that our experience will always top the last time. It's our family's beloved spot.

I couldn't resist, but to order the best sushi rolls, sushi + ramen bowls, and iced green tea. Let's just say I was hungry LOL. Everything was amazing! Seaweed salad was the best I've ever had. Between the two sushi rolls, I enjoyed the Carribean Roll more. I think it was the sweet onion that put it over the top. TASTY! Chirashi Bowl had fresh fishes in good cuts. YUM! Our cashier brought the ramens and utensils to our table. No water though and I didn't ask for any. There is a soda machine in the back and some beers on tap. The menu set up seemed to be a base of pork, chicken, or vegan and other options are extra "flairs" of the base like sesame, curry, matcha, etc. The tofu slices were really good. The pork wasn't chashu, but a thick piece of pork belly. Noodles were different between the vegan and pork option. The soup got realllyyyyyy salty for me toward the end. Overall - not the most authentic ramen but also decent enough to fill cravings. Not a lot of noodles, but for $14? Not bad at all and I would come back out of convenience of location.

It was my first visit here but it won't be my last. I had already did my browsing of what's on the menu. I joined in on the crispy tofu for the appetizer and the crispy salmon skin salad. When we walked in it was busy. The Dodger game was on at the bar. There were maybe three open tables at most. We were seated at their small table against the wall. A cozy table for two. We were greeted by our friendly server, she brought the menus and ask us about drinks to start. I've water all around, haha. She came back with our water. Ooh, tasted like cucumber water... Refreshing. While my lady was deciding, I ordered: crispy tofu appetizer (presented in a small dish, about 10-12 pieces of hot, crispy cubes of golden tofu with a dipping sauce) and the salmon skin salad for my entree. The salad was an ample sized serving to share between the two of us. The salmon skin was julienned and were crispy little clumps like miniature fishy hash browns. Very crispy and tasty salad that included sliced tomatoes, cucumber, and scallions on mixed greens. My date ordered the charshu ramen. We shared our plates. The ramen was very tasty. The noodles had a good chew, not over cooked. Mmm, that was delicious. The robotic server was kitchy and cute. Maybe it does assist them with delivering plates to the table but the human server was observed transferring them from the bot to the table. For our table, we had our food delivered in stages not at the same time. The crispy tofu arrived first, then the ramen, and several minutes later came the salmon skin salad. Not a deal breaker but noticed. Food was good. Service was okay, could be better.
