Great spot for byob sushi. Came on a Friday night with 2 friends and had a good time. It was pretty empty in the dining room (most people were sittinf outside), but the server was just lovely and wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed a spicy tuna roll and green turtle. I really appreciate that they do not charge a corking fee for the wine we brought. Would come back.

I got the sushi platter and the Chicago roll to go. Very quick service!! Overall this was eh. I would not recommend to a big sushi lover. There are no words! I had the Kentucky hot sandwich and the mac & cheese. I am one step closer to Heaven.

Ordered the scallop special, salmon avocado, shrimp tempura, dynamite and tuna avocado roll. Not the best quality sushi I've ever had but you can't beat the price at around $10-$16 per roll. The scallop special was the best one and I would order it again.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to any true Yelper, mostly because of unfriendly waitstaff. The food was fine, just nothing wow about it. Maybe take out would be a more pleasant option. I walked in during lunch hour last week, the entire staff was sitting at the sushi bar eating and there were no customers. The host welcomes me as she gets up from eating, mouth still chewing and walks me to a table. I point out that it's dirty with bits of rice still present. She walks me to another table, this one is clearly not bussed from whomever ate here earlier with soy sauce streaks, and now I'm feeling like Goldilocks!! I point to a table that at least has a window view and requested she wipe it down. Oh the look of scorn in her eyes said it all! I should have left then but I was craving sushi and tried to give the benefit of the doubt. Although I have never been to Kai before, I did take mental note when I was out with friends and we passed it, one of them said it was a great lunch spot. I digress... I immediately noticed the menu was soiled but asked for the lunch specials. She flips the menu over pointing to the options on the menu. I tell her I need a minute. Almost 10-minutes pass. I end up walking up towards the sushi bar and the whole staff turns to look at me - AWKWARD!! I announce I was ready to order and the same girl says "ok what you want?" "I'll take the sushi roll lunch special" I say. One guy jumps up from the sushi bar and walks around to the kitchen. A few minutes pass then miso soup and water are brought to me. The girl said "excuse me, what sushi you want?" I say again "I'll take the sushi roll lunch special." Now this girl says "you no tell me what sushi, I no make nothing" yeah this really happened. In hindsight I should have just left but I pointed to which rolls I wanted and she wrote them down on her notepad and shuffled away. I truly hope it was a lack of communication, clearly English isn't her first language, but still the whole dynamic was rude! I picked a tempura crab roll and a spicy yellowtail roll, each 8 pieces. They arrived together on a platter ($15). Not completely filling but an adequate portion for a midweek lunch. The girl never checked on me or asked if I needed anything else. I walked up to the counter to pay my bill and for the first time in a very long time I did not feel a tip was justified. Without even so much as a thank you from any of the staff for my business I left. Kinda makes me wonder how they stay in business treating customers this way.

I'm picky about my sushi and have to say this was really good!!! It seems small but it's a great small neighborhood spot. Would highly recommend their scallop special roll. All the rolls were perfectly cut and everything tasted fresh. The service and staff were fast and friendly. I'd come back!

It's a pretty good neighborhood sushi spot. Our favorite roll is the Hamachi Special Roll. For the price, the food isn't bad. I think the sashimi was pretty large. And I like that they prepare an orange for you at the end. Service is barebones but it's a small shop and the workers are friendly. The otoro was still a little frosty when we got it but I think they give generous fish slices for their sashimi so the value is there.

I really wanted to like Kai Sushi, but it was a disappointment. The miso soup had a very strange taste -- not the comforting flavor you expect. The sushi itself was just okay, nothing memorable, and definitely not worth coming back for. With so many other sushi spots in the area that are fresher and better, I won't be returning here.

I've been to their state street location multiple times and was happily surprised to see that they had also opened up a location in river North! I ordered my favorite, the ocean roll, and it was just as delicious as it usually is from their state street location. The staff was attentive and kind. The only feedback that I would give is that the day that I dined here, for some reason there was several fruit flies that kept hanging over our table, which was distracting and detracted a little bit from the meal.

I love this spot and have gotten takeout multiple times. This time I sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed some of my favorite dishes. Service was great and friendly. The Chicago fire roll is fresh and tasty. The salad is a nice size with fresh veggies and a tasty ginger dressing. The tonkatsu ramen is delicious and a huge portion. A go to lunch spot for me for years now! Anytime i'm back in the neighborhood I order a couple rolls for pickup. Great spot to dine in, however, with proximity to the park views and the river. Food is always ready really quickly and the sushi is fresh! read more

I just ordered food from here on uber eats. There was a strange and unpleasant taste and smell to the sushi and it was basically stale.... I regret ordering from here... it was not worth it and I don't understand how the staff could give something this poor in quality to a customer. Thankfully, uber gave me a refund. read more

We order from here. I lean mostly vegetarian and the fam loves sushi. They make my cucumber cream cheese jalapeño with soy paper roll... and I call to ask for fresh wasabi, willing to pay extra. The fam loves the ocean roll, chicago fire, tbh every thing they tried. If they take as much care for the picky eater I am, I can imagine my family is to be a fan of Kai Sushi. Don't sleep on fresh wasabi, it hits different and is worth paying extra to try read more

Have been twice and was pleasantly surprised both times......really great food, great prices and excellent service. The Chirashi Sushi was fresh and the presentation was beautiful. The Lunch Specials are a bargain with generous portions and they are delicious. Other than Sushi and Ramen, there aren't really any kitchen made items so it is a somewhat limited menu selection. And really, the only criticism I have is they play the music too loudly (its's a small space). Otherwise, I highly recommend this spot for good food and good value! read more

Quaint little sushi spot next to the river and tucked away in a quiet part of River North. Went on a Saturday afternoon around 4:30 for an early dinner and were seated right away. Service was friendly and the specialty rolls were really good - much better than most sushi spots I've been to in the city, including higher end places. We had the miso soup, Ocean roll, Shitake special roll (vegetarian), and the West Town roll. I also appreciated that the prices were reasonable (think pre-pandemic), unlike too many other restaurants I've been to in Chicago over the past year. I think I've found my new favorite sushi spot in the neighborhood. Looking forward to returning! read more

I love this place! It's super quick and really good. I have ordered it many times and it never tastes too fishy. They also have good mochi balls. They also have cute outdoor seating for nicer weather that is right by the park and you can go for a little walk along the river afterwards. I have friends that take Bumble/Hinge dates here. read more

Love this neighborhood sushi spot!! It's a great place to just pop in without a reservation and have fresh sushi. Big fan of the variety of the menu and it is BYOB which is also a bonus. Usually just walk there and grab a bottle of wine across the street at 7/11. Very popular for takeout as well so a good option to try if you're new to the neighborhood! Staff is very nice and will help to recommend menu items, patio is also a great spot to people watch and hang out during the summer! read more

I think it's a mainly take out place as we saw many doordashers but we were the only diners. Flaming VIP and yellowtail roll are our favorites! Not the best sushi but definitely one of our go tos! Staff is very kind! read more

Delivery saved me on a rainy day. I ordered my first volcano roll since high school and was not disappointed. The seaweed salad was pretty good too. It laid on a bed of fresh greens, so I originally thought there would be more seaweed in my container. I appreciated the additional sauces provided. read more

BEST SUSHI IN CHICAGO!!!!!!!!! This review is so grandly overdue!! On 21 January of this year, I experienced Kai for the first time. Ever since, I have ordered takeout from Kai at least three times weekly!! The food is fresh, beautiful, and plentiful!! The customer service is spectacular. Ploy, the chefs, and all of the workers simply blow all other sushi restaurant teams out of the ballpark!! AND THEY ALWAYS WRITE CUTE LITTLE NOTES TO ME ON THE PACKAGING!! I cannot offer enough divine words for this business. Roses are red, violets and blue, I love Kai Sushi, and you shall, too!! read more

I just ordered takeout from here and it was delicious! I had the crunchy tuna and salmon roll and it was good size order for 1 person. The crunchy tuna was my favorite with the shrimp tempura in the inside with tuna on the outside with a crunchy topping. The salmon was chunky pieces of salmon rolled in rice. I would order both again! I noticed 1 on the table next to me (super crunchy) and will order that next time. read more

We were the only guests that evening, so the whole experience felt wonderfully private -- just us, Chef Shoji, and the fish. Chef Shoji opens the meal by presenting the actual fish you'll be eating, all flown in twice a week from Japan or Spain. It immediately signals what kind of meal you're in for. The 20 courses were well-paced and the quality was consistent throughout. Nigiri and sashimi were pristine, but the hot dishes were equally impressive, which surprised me. Both sides of the menu showed real craft and attention to detail. Service was fantastic -- warm, attentive, and never stuffy. At $210 per person, it's a special occasion meal, but one that genuinely delivers on the price. As someone who eats a lot of omakase back home in LA, I wasn't sure what to expect. Daily special of the bone marrow bacon jam toast - glazed, slippery off the bone, savory and sweet. Always love a good bone marrow dish to get the sweetness off it. This was so good that there were bits of the marrow and jam left stuck to the bone, I took a piece of the toast and scooped the bone dry. Nothing left for anyone to attack this. Non pork dishes were the Mushroom 3 ways and Spanish octopus. Mushroom dish was savory with all the coated sauces elevating this. Spanish octopus was kicked lightly and easily can bite in to enjoy the tender and charred portions. But the award went to my main course - the braised pork shoulder with saffron, apricots and Swiss chard. Aside from the rippable pork meat when dining on it, the sauces fused together on this dish elevated it and had everyone coming back for more. I needed an official Chicago culinary experience and found it at The Purple Pig without a doubt.

Even the sweet tea was perfect: actually sweet without being overpowering or having that bitter, earthy aftertaste that some sweet teas have. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I came back the next night and tried the brisket. It was sooooo good too. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor. At that point I knew the first meal wasn't a fluke. It's not inexpensive, but the portions are generous, and I felt the quality more than justified the price. I was there by myself because I'm traveling for work and actually enjoyed the communal tables. They made the atmosphere feel welcoming and a little less lonely than sitting by myself. The staff was excellent, too. The gentleman with the glasses at the meat counter was friendly, funny, and made the experience even more enjoyable. He even threw in a complimentary rib, which was such a nice surprise and a great example of the hospitality here. One thing to know before you go: the line can get long, but don't let that scare you away, it moves efficiently, and the food is absolutely worth the wait. Green Street Smoked Meats lived up to every bit of the hype. Between two visits, I tried the pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese, cornbread, sweet tea, and a rib, and every single thing was excellent. Alright, let me tell you about my experience at Kai Sushi. First of all, let's talk about the names of their rolls - I'm pretty sure they just throw together random words and call it a day. But hey, that's art for ya. I ordered the Ocean Roll and the Scallop Roll and let me just say, my taste buds were so happy they considered quitting their day job. Now, let's talk about the tuna don - is it deconstructed poke or just a bowl of raw fish? Who knows, but I'm not complaining. I did hear a rumor that if you ask for avocado they'll put it on top and make it look pretty for the 'gram. So if you're into that, you know what to do. And let's not forget about their sustainability - eating local is the way to go. Don't pay for those delivery fees from the big guys, support the little guys! Plus, it makes you feel like you're doing your part in saving the world. At least that's what I tell myself so I can justify eating all this sushi. And last but not least, BYOB baby! Nothing makes sushi taste better than bringing your own bottle of cheap wine. So grab your favorite $5 cab from 7-11 and head on over to Kai Sushi for a night of rolls, rice, and questionable decisions. In conclusion, Kai Sushi is the perfect spot for when you want to feel fancy but also want to wear sweatpants. We have been loyal customers of this restaurant for over 2.5 years, ordering multiple times a month. In the past, the team took great care of us and was very attentive to our severe, anaphylactic food allergies, which is why we trusted and supported this restaurant for so long. Unfortunately, over the last six months, there has been significant issues. Two of our orders involved mistakes related to our clearly communicated food allergies, resulting in food we had paid for but could not safely eat. Another order did correctly avoid the allergy, but the rolls were incorrect from what we ordered. We understand that mistakes can happen, but repeated issues, especially when they involve serious allergies, are deeply concerning. After giving multiple chances and seeing the same problems continue, we have decided we can no longer order from this restaurant. It's disappointing to walk away after years of being loyal customers, but accuracy and attention to food allergies are critical and cannot be overlooked. read more
