Traveling on business and was in the mood for Japanese. Nice clean place. Tastefully decorated and greeted nicely by a hostess. The place looked a little slow so my colleague and I opted to sit in the bar area. Started off with the Wok Edamame and that was excellent. For dinner, I had the beef bento box and the White House Roll. Let me tell you, the bento box could have easily been shared with a friend or loved one but it was so damned good that I actually ate almost everything in it. As for the White House Roll? Pretty damned good and our waiter, bartender Trey was very cool. Now the reason why it got 4 stars from me? Trey had to microwave my hot tea... really... microwave it. I've come to kai multiple times for dinner, the service is always slow. Its probably a well known standard for most guests that they're not gonna be greeted for 10 minutes, drinks will be ready by the time your food comes out which also takes about 45 minutes. Last night My friends and I decided to go to Kai to have a nice evening dinner. We were sat upstairs, no problem, the vibe up there is awesome. However, it seriously took our server Natalie 25 minutes to even come up to our table. I had to go back downstairs to get the host and ask if we had a server after watching every single one of them look at our table and walk past us. Natalie made multiple trips past our table looking at us and never had the idea to tell us she would be with us in a minute. My friends and I are all servers, we can understand when someone is struggling or getting behind. that's not the case, she was closing a big party when we got there and we were her only other table it seemed like cause the place cleared out and there were 3 other servers up there. Our drinks always take so long and the second round of drinks takes even longer and usually doesn't come till after your meal is finished. She never asked us how it all was and didn't even ask us if we wanted a box for our untouched sushi that we planned on telling her that there was a hair in, but she didn't ask! we continued to pay $90 for not that great of food, bad service. It's so easy to have standards for your staff at a nice restaurant, they really need to step it up because it's ALWAYS been this way. It's also super easy for them to try to make up for their mistakes by apologizing, maybe offering a free round of drinks or a free appetizer. i don't even want free stuff but it's the fact that they don't really care about the experience we have had while dining there. read more

Thank goodness Kai is still open during COVID! My friends and I missed in the in-dining experience! As always, we got the Star Wars sushi roll and of course the Oh My God roll as well! Both were fantastic as usual! We also got the Sesame, Mozzarella, Asparagus Tempura appetizer and the Hot Rock appetizer (highly highly recommend! the sirloin just melts in your mouth!!). The service is also on par! The manager checked in on us multiple times and the waitress was friendly as well! Food came out quickly which we were super happy about cause we were so hungry! After my last visit which was unsatisfactory, the owners reached out to me and were set out on a mission to make my next experience great. The food at Kai is excellent however, the customer service is the worst. I called to make a reservation for my husbands birthday- someone answered the phone and said hello and then immediately started talking to someone else. Every time I thought they were finished and tried to speak they would over talk me and start speaking to someone else. I finally got to book the reservation and i asked if they did anything special for birthdays i was told no they do not so i said ok fine. I then get to Kai on the night of my reservation and the hostess grabs the menus and starts to just run up the stairs without evening acknowledging me. Once she was 1/2 way up the stairs she turned around and asked me to follow her but kept running ahead of me. She made it up the stairs before i did sat my menus down and then pointed to the area where i should go. They sat us at a bar area so I asked the waitress were there no tables and she told me tables were for people who had a reservation and when I told her I did have a reservation she told me well we don't have any tables. I started to leave then but my husband said he was hungry and just decided to stay. We ordered the steak dish and the chicken dish which was delicious. We love this place! The Nigiri platter is so fresh, and we love that we can sub different fish out for other options! The late night happy hour is probably the best in town - i expensive but yummy bites, cheap drinks, and awesome service. Had appetizers like the pork dumplings, ceviche, seaweed salad, spring rolls and all were fresh and tasty. My wife had poke bowl which was plenty to eat and I had the OMG flaming sushi roll. I love Kai! We have gone there on multiple occasions and it never disappoints. The spicy seafood is my favorite!! It's so spicy that it threw me into false labor when I was about 8 months along with my son. He apparently did not appreciate the spice (he still doesn't like spicy food). It is one of my favorite places downtown and the atmosphere is very intimate. We went there for Valentine's Day this last year. It was very busy and took awhile (which we knew going in) but the food was WORTH IT!!!!! We will always go back!!! read more
