Went to Kai this week and was very disappointed. Dawn was our server and was very rude. She made poor drinks and refused to remake them. She sat and talked to coworkers for 20 minutes before taking our order. I asked for the manager, Baylee, who was apparently too busy to speak with us- despite the slow business. We are so sad that Kai is now held to such a low standard. Food was phenomenal but they need to highly consider a new staff and management. My family and I will not be returning. read more

Accommodating to families. We came in town and momma wanted sushi. We happened upon Kai and was immediately greeted by an amazing hostess. She saw no problem with seating my family of five including an infant. She did not make us feel uncomfortable but yet welcome in their establishment. Our food was amazing and came very fast. My kids enjoyed the chicken teriyaki. My husband and I had some sushi rolls but the best thing on the menu was the sautéed brussels sprouts. Great service. Great people. read more

The hostess sucks so beware. It's like talking to a wall. She let us stand around for 15 minutes even though there were lots of empty tables and booths downstairs. Oh well, the rest is a lot better. I love the slightly brothel-like atmosphere and low lighting. The booths are huge, should you ever get into one. Get their fried mozzarella asparagus thingies (can't remember the technical term). Those are sooooo delicious. Do yourself a favor, sit at the bar. The bartenders are very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. You get great specials and don't even have to deal with the bitch Cerberus at the door. read more

I have experienced a lot better. Of the 4 rolls we had 2 were good 1 was ok and 1 should be named the bland box roll. That was by far the lamest roll I have ever had, and by lame I really do mean it couldn't walk to the soy sauce or walk out of it. It falls apart no matter what you do. The one with jalapeno flakes is a very tasty roll, the candy cane looking one is also tasty. It's a California roll with tuna and hamachi on the top. The decor is very modern and they try to make sure they are always hip. You can tell they are hip because your service is sloooow and they don't bring you everything you order. The upside is they all do wear long black aprons and the lights are dim so you know you cool just being there and that should be enough, if you want good service and good food well that is just asking too much. Kai is one of my TOP restaurants in Springfield. Anytime that I am wanting to eat amazing food with my family it friends I always turn to Kai because I know I will get the quality that I am looking for. I love coming with my mom and just the two of us ordering a few rolls of sushi. My must have is the Tuna Poke Salad and the Agadashi Tofu. Walked in with my mother, sister and niece. Here's the thing, I understand that we had no reservation... but the restaurant was empty and never filled up during our stay. We were seated by the window (where we were for all intents and purposes hidden from sight) at a large table that wobbled and with very little room between the backs of our seats and the wall. It took our waitress 13 minutes (yes, we DID time her) to even greet us, and throughout our meal the attention was next to none. The teriyaki chicken my sister ordered tasted like something out of a frozen dinner -too sweet and salty and yet bland at the same time. While my salmon nigiri was fine the yellowtail was flavorless. My family does not have a lot of disposable income... but I DO. I wanted to treat my family to something nice while they were in town and we were out for a movie. Instead my family was judged by their clothing to be poor tippers and all but completely ignored by the waitstaff. This is honestly what appeared to be the issue because that's how unwelcoming the atmosphere was. I left a more than generous tip for the lackluster food and godawful service -my mother raised me to tip well. Maybe next time they won't judge based on appearances. Kai looked like a unique and upscale restaurant from the outside, so I won't make that mistake either. read more

Mediocre sushi, no flair or special touches and I found it to be somewhat fishy in flavor (those who know sushi know good sushi does NOT taste fishy). I had the Spider Roll and the Yellowtail Nigiri as well as the Miso Soup, which was a little too salty. If you are sitting near the color-changing wall I suggest vying for a seat with you back to it - I found it extremely annoying to look at. The $3 house wine on ladies is generously portioned, probably the best deal of the night. I will probably go back simply because my friends will drag me there and because the location is convenient, but it would not be my first or even my fifth choice. read more

Came here for lunch with some co-workers. This being my first visit, I ended up getting completely sidetracked by some of the Korean dishes on the menu and opted for the bulgogi lettuce wrap. For some reason, I was thinking it was going to be one lettuce wrap, not like an appetizer of lettuce wraps. In writing this, I fully know that doesn't make any sense, but I simply note it because I probably would have ordered something else had I realized what I was actually getting. The bulgogi beef was rather underwhelming, I must say, and the lettuce should have been dried a bit more before it was put on the plate. I hate a puddle of water on my plate from it. It was ok but nothing special. Also, unrelated to the food: I understand this is supposed to be a cool night spot, but my god, the red plush velvet and what not just read as tacky to me. You know what, this actually is somewhat related to the food. Whenever I've enjoyed good quality sushi, it has consistently come from places that didn't fuss over flashy, err tacky decorations. I honestly will admit that the decorations--coupled with the menu of non-Japanese items--kind of swayed me from trying the sushi on my trip here. Basically, all I can say is that Kai was ok, but I don't foresee myself jumping up and down and begging to eat here anytime in the near future. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Springfield! What a great place to bring a group of friends to sample different kinds of sushi and have a few drinks. Wednesdays are college nights and they have all kinds of $2 and $3 specials for everyone to try and share at the table. The bar downstairs can get crowded, but there's an entire floor upstairs with little nooks and crannies for a more intimate space. Check it out! read more

The service is spectacular, the drinks are sublime, and "Americanized" though it may be, the food never disappoints. With ambiance just upscale enough to be date-worthy and a vibe that remains casual enough for a night out with friends, Kai distinguishes itself from the rest of the bar/restaurant combos in the downtown area effortlessly. Beware if you come on Wednesday for college night: the rolls on special are deep fried, as in the entire roll dropped in the fryer (presumably in order to use the fish that is no longer fresh enough to serve raw) - don't wear anything that needs to be dry cleaned because the whole place reeks of fryer smell. Having said that, it is a fun cheap place to meet friends. The food is fine - as expected for sushi so far from a coast. The atmosphere is fun and there's a big bar to hang out at when there's a wait. read more

I have been coming to Kai for years. This is my favorite restaurant. As always, the sushi was excellent and the service was great. This was a birthday treat for me. Amazing! Went in for my bachelorette party and got to use a large table tucked away in a private corner and was so nice for us to just enjoy each other without worrying about bothering others. The rolls were very good and the drinks were GREAT! The pink delight is a must try, it tastes like a jolly rancher. Logan was our server and he was very attentive without being too in our space. Went there on Saturday night and it was so busy and people were waiting at the door. We thought we wouldn't be able to get a seat because we had not made a reservation. But luckily the hostess girls at the door got us seats downstairs by the window. I loved it because it felt private. The music was just the right volume and the atmosphere was great. People really looked like they were enjoying themselves. We ordered some drinks from the bar and rolls. I got Back to Kai and Oh My God Roll because I can't eat raw fish. I know, what am I doing in a sushi place when I can't eat raw fish. But Kai has a lot on the menu other than just rolls. I love their seafood soup for an appetizer during lunch sometimes. Our server was really attentive even though it was fully packed. The managers would walk by sometimes and ask how we were doing. Love the staff here. We decided for fun to go to Kai "after dark" for our Eclipse lunch. We had never been to Kai for lunch (but probably 50 times at Haruno). We walked in and there was a LOUD radio station announcer yelling over the speakers and TV's were all on. It smelled like fish and bleach! Not in a good way. My wife and I ate at Kai for Valentines this year. They were running a little bit behind, so we had to wait a while past our reservation time. With that being said, the hostesses were incredibly kind and we didn't mind waiting. Our waiter, Michael, was the best! He was hilarious and super fun. He definitely made our night! I used to eat here a lot (at least once a week). When I had kids I didn't come as often. I have been a couple times the last couple months and it has been bad service. Tonight our waiter came to the table for the first time "are you done looking" we didn't even have menus yet. He brought us 1 menu over because they were "out of menus". After we ordered he didn't know who ordered what and was very unprofessional. If I'm going to come downtown to pay $15 a person for sushi I want friendly professional service. read more

OMG. Yum. I come from CA, where our sushi rocks. However, this place is right up there with the best CA sushi joints. I was a little taken aback by the night club atmosphere but the food was just so wonderful. We had the calamari appetizer. Dipping sauces were wonderful. I recommend squeezing the lime into the sauce that tastes a little garlic-y and pouring in a bit of soy sauce. Takes a little garlic edge of and goes great with the rings. We shared three rolls, all spicy, all amazing. The yummy, American beauty and back to the Kai. Personal favorite was the American beauty. The yummy roll lacked a spark (kinda "bland" for sushi) but a good roll for a picky eater. I adored this place and can't wait to go back. read more

I take back my good review. We went back on a "busy" night and everything sucked. I got hot oil from their stupid hot rock splattered straight at my face and the manager didn't even come to apologize. And since they were "busy" (my ass) the food was slow and sucked. The waitress was apologetic and everything, but it wasn't her job to be apologizing for the chef pouring CLEARLY way too much oil in that stupid thing. Not coming back, annoyed. Enjoy this place so much. Gyoza is wonderful, my partner had teriyaki chicken that was fantastic, the rolls and the nigiri are awesome. Love the size of the portion, sushi in one bite.
