Was able to make a last minute reservation on a Saturday night. I'll start by saying the food was good - especially the mole de pollo campestre (chicken) and lubina zarandeado (sea bass). The chicken was super tender and the sea bass was so soft, both had delicious flavors. Other items we ordered for the table were the guac (underseasoned), octopus, black truffle esquites, and tacos. The other stand out item was the tres leches for dessert. Unfortunately, the service was not good. The table next to us sat down after us, but got their food first, while we waited over an hour before our mains arrived. This was by far one of the best dinners I had. Everything was absolutely amazing!!!! We ended up getting a voucher on PULSD and thought this was an incredible find. So, the voucher is a 3 course dinner for two people for $89 (plus whatever else you would pay for tax and tip). It basically comes with an app, two taco sets or 1 large plate to share, dessert, and two cocktails. Just a heads up, it does not include EVERY item on their regular menu, but it did have a big chunk of my favorites. In terms of service, this place was fantastic. One of the things I really appreciated is that they had a separate menu for the PULSD voucher. While you can still order off the regular menu, it was nice to be able to get a list of everything I could get. These are the dishes we ended up getting: Esquites - these were absolutely incredible black truffle esquites were delicious. To Yelp or not to Yelp that is the question. So some backstory first because I've decided to Yelp it up. I was attending a trade show at Javits Center and the PR Team for the event invited some of their VIP exhibitors and friends in the media out to Kahlo for a special networking Happy Hour on the events second day. As I am always interested in knowing my reps better and getting potential website content out of exhibitor meetups, I could not resist at all. Plus I was going to be on the hungry side after exploring the convention center for a few hours and I had never been to Kahlo before. The restaurant is right on 29th Street a few minutes walk from Javits and has a decent sized space to it. Coat check in the front and then numerous tables on either side and down the center of the room with the bar directly in the rear right next to the kitchen. The group had convened to this section for the Happy Hour and since I don't drink alcohol I was hoping that the bartender could craft a tasty mocktail for me. I didn't catch what he called it but it was pinkish in hue if I saw it correctly in the light and quite tasty. I forgot to ask for limited ice because I'd rather have more drink than lots of ice. Perhaps it was a non-alcoholic mojito or a non-tequila sunrise. Either way, it was tasty and I had a couple of them to compliment the finger foods. The servers kept the attendees fed with tasty bites that featured small lobster rolls, tacos, potato tots with some kind of spicy sauce, steak bites and some sort of corn appetizer in a sauce served with a spoon. While I was glad to taste all of them as they went around, I found myself enjoying the lobster rolls, tacos and the little steak bites the most. They also had a salsa dip on each of the small standing tables with wonderful tortilla chips. I need to find out where they get these provided they are not made in house. I did review the menu prices of the main courses and appetizers and while they appeared to be a little pricy, this was nothing too out of the ordinary for a NYC located restaurant. I will say that 29th Street off 11th Avenue is a bit off the beaten path for more but you can walk a few blocks from the 7 train or the C line and of course Uber anyplace if your budget permits. Traditionally I don't head to places like this in the city since my own neighborhood has so many spots that serve a similar fare. A minor downside was no available WiFi and while they said they didn't have one working I saw it on the mobile so it must have been for transactions only. Today this kind of stuff is commonplace so I hope more find themselves creating customer accessible accounts because it let's that social media notification happen and potentially help the establishments overall existence. I'd come back here and sit and properly dine and relax but I cannot determine when that will be at all. Give them a try if you trust my opinions because what I did have for this Happy Hour was very good. read more

I heard great things about this place so I booked a work lunch there for my team but I was very disappointed. I ordered the "Fresa" drink . It didn't even have alcohol in it and was $14 which would have been find but it was literally JUST ice . So basically we paid for ice . I finished it in 5 sips and used the ice to put water in for the rest of my meal . The food was ok but he cleared our plates and left the appetizers so how are we supposed to finish them . We made a reservation here for a late Sunday brunch and were pleasantly surprised by the vibrant decor, the great service, and the delicious food. We absolutely devoured our entrées hence the only pictures I got was of our appetizer (guacamole and chips) and the complimentary horchata "shots" at the end, paired with some chocolate. I love the garnish of mango in the guacamole. The chips were seasoned with some type of chili or spice, which was a nice touch. For the entrées, we ordered the chilaquiles and the enchiladas with mole. They were kind enough to make the chilaquiles without chicken. Both entrées were massive. For my experience, it was a group of 8 of us, and it was so hard to hear each other over the music and all the other conversations happening around us. It's a huge open room so I guess it's expected. Drinks were definitely a bit pricey and not strong enough, great selections, but eh. The food was very delicious, and they kept the chips and salsa coming. SALSA WAS BOMB AF. A few of my friends and I were looking for a place near Hudson yards for a holiday dinner. Everyone was coming from different states and it was rare for us to be together so we wanted something special. Kahlo answered the call with flying colors. If you're familiar with the area, you know that there are multiple restaurants including those native to the Hudson Yards campus of venues. None of them strike the balance of cost and atmosphere the way Kahlo does. The entry area features several pieces of art and photography for the restaurant's namesake (Frida Kahlo). As you move past that you'll enter an expansive dining room with soft lighting and beautiful brick walls. Red holiday decorations blended in beautifully! As you would expect, for Mexican cuisine, they had an excellent variety of cocktails based off of tequila and mezcal. I loved the "Granzino" (Premium Tequila Blanco, fresh lime juice and spiced tamarind puree). I followed that up with some white wine when my entrée arrived. As our group was pretty large, we were able to try all of the appetizers except for the Aguachile. My favorite was probably the Black Truffle Esquites. If you're a guacamole person, be adventurous and try the one with the goat cheese and charred pumpkin "La Catrina." You won't be disappointed! Now I don't remember all of the entrees. I recall that I was looking at ordering the "Barbacoa de Cordero," which was lamb based. The waitress (Isabella) suggested the special which also had lamb and it was awesome! My group can be a little rambunctious but the staff handled everything with uncommon grace. They anticipated our every move from seating changes to picture taking, to menu questions. Special kudos to the Manager Diana (Super smooth professional), Hostess Lucia (soft & sweet mannerisms) and Waitress Isabella (Incredible efficiency balanced with attention to detail. I don't know how you justify three tacos and three empanadas for the price of $20-$30 for each entree. I would understand if it was bigger or more pieces. The food was alright, as I wrote already the price point doesn't justify it. Onto what was ordered, got the Trio Molotes, grilled shishito peppers, and the El charro guacamole. The peppers had tamarin spice on it, and it made a huge difference compared to other places where it's just salted and grilled. The trio molotes- which are three empanadas consisting of chorizo (queso + chile), huitlacoche (queso + corn), and chicken tinga (morita sauce + creme fraiche). El Charro Guacamole has chicharron crisp pork skin, pan fried queso, and tomato pico de gallo. I came here with a couple of coworkers to catch up. I've never really eaten in this part of town so I was interested in trying this restaurant, especially since I'm a huge Mexican cuisine fan. Pros: the decor of this restaurant is absolute amazing. It gives cozy and romantic vibes especially with the dim lighting and open dining area. The hostess was really pleasant as well as the waitress. In terms of service, they do an excellent job. Cons: I ordered the steak and definitely on the chewier side although it's kind of expected when your order skirt steak. While the drinks used quality alcohol, the flavor itself was very mild. My go to drinks always has Mezcal because I enjoy the smoky undertones but in this case, the Fulani Chang was really muted in that area. We ordered empanadas for an appetizer but were on the dry side and didn't have much flavor which is surprising for chorizo. In addition, the portions are a bit on the smaller side which I wouldn't have mind if I actually enjoyed my meal. Overall, this place definitely has the ambiance to have a quiet dinner where you can actually have a conversation. The chips were also good. The tuna tostadas were mid. They had way too much cabbage. They came with 4 mini tostadas (only 2 are pictured). The pieces of tuna were really small and thin. It needed something more. It was hard to eat because it was supposed to be finger food but fell apart when u tried to pick it up and there was just wayyy too much cabbage. The octopus was also mid. We stumbled upon this Mexican spot for lunch and was not disappointed. Must order dishes: tempura fish tacos with caviar on top, guacamole We started with the Elote which comes with two but we added an extra because we had three people as well as the guacamole (first one on menu). The Elote was good but I've definitely had others before. The guacamole was absolutely fantastic the black sauce on top was a spicy Smokey hot sauce 10/10. The Mezcal tequila drink as well as the Blanco tequila drink with jalapeños and peppers were delicious I could drink 10. For the tacos we order the tempura fish tacos with caviar on top, the lobster tacos with some cilantro sauce as well as the shrimp Al Pastore tacos. Decent Mexican restaurant that could appeal better to some people, but personally, I've experienced better in NYC. I ordered the Enchiladas Poblanas, which were pretty good and prepared in a classic style with mole sauce and chicken tinga. Also, the presentation was pretty nice. However, there was not that much chicken in there, it could have been more cheesy, and the service size was a bit small for $20. In addition, it turns out they only have 1 dessert option (tres leches cake for $12, which I did not try). The interior of the restaurant has minimal natural light and is kind of dim. There is an old-fashioned large chandelier hanging from the center of the ceiling and kind-of-upscale looking seating areas. I could see how some people might find the decor nice, but personally, I would prefer a brighter, more modern look. The staff were friendly but not that attentive. The service speed was okay. Overall, Kahlo is fine in terms of the food and atmosphere but didn't impress me too much. It's certainly not a bad option for Mexican food, but there are definitely better Mexican places you could find around the city. read more

Upon walking into the restaurant, we were not expecting the place to look super high end and elegant. They even had a chandelier. We shared everything that we ordered. Via recommendation from the server, we ordered Cochinita Pibil Tacos ($18) and Los Cabos Tacos ($22). Both tasted good in their own unique way, especially when using the sauce provided. For entree, we got the Mole De Pollo Campestre ($27), which was much more filling than the tacos. It came with epazote green rice, which I enjoyed the most. The chicken was made well. Not a fan of the mole sauce, didn't enjoy the taste. Overall it was a good experience. You can expect this to cost a premium as they classify themselves as fine dining.
