Went here for my friend's birthday. It was my first time having Russian cuisine and it did not disappoint! I'm glad I was able to go with friends that knew what to order and we did family style so we could get a little bit of everything! The food was salty and savory it was all soooo delicious!! Not my typical go-to cuisine but when I'm in the mood for a savory/pickle-y meal this is exactly what I'm looking for! The server made us feel like we were in his Eastern European grandmother's house for dinner (in the most comfortable and welcoming way). The cocktails were excellent, especially if you can catch part of happy hour! The signature horseradish martini was unique, flavorful, and fun. The moscow mule was super gingery and tasty! First time eating Russian/Ukrainian food, and it was delicious!! Everything was seasoned well with various textures. Before going, I knew I wanted to try Herring Under a Fur Coat and the Rabbit in a Clay Pot, but I didn't realize dinner and lunch menus were different, so we were only able to try one of them. Herring Under a Fur Coat had these beautiful layers of raw fish, beets, potato, and egg. Our favorite of the meal! Baltic sprat buterbrodi were small finger sandwiches that had a good bite and mix of flavors. The Siberian pelmeni had the most familiar flavors as it reminded me of little Chinese dumplings but with a nice creamy sauce on top. Definitely coming back for dinner to try the other items! I absolutely love this place. Kachka has such a lively fun atmosphere that it immediately puts you in a great mood the moment you walk in. I have been a few times now and each visit has been consistently excellent. I have often sat at the bar which I highly recommend. The interaction with the bartenders is fantastic and they are knowledgeable engaging and genuinely excited to talk about the menu and drinks. I usually stick with their vodka which is extensive and incredibly well curated. It is such a big part of the experience and pairs perfectly with the food. The zakuski are a must and I especially love the caviar and roe selections as well as Under a Fur Coat which is both comforting and surprisingly refined. Everything feels thoughtful without ever feeling heavy or overly serious. The menu is full of dishes that beg to be shared so coming with a few others is the best way to experience it. That way you can try as much as possible and explore the range of flavors they offer. Everything I have had here has been delicious and well executed. Kachka is one of those places that manages to be fun flavorful and memorable all at once. We have been here a handful of times and the food is good. They do have lots of options for alcohol. We have tried many of the vodkas and beers as well as wine. Those were always solid. This is a fun place to take family or friends that are not familiar with this type of food. Service is usually subpar if you ask me. Staff are not very attentive at times and sometimes makes you feel like you are rushed or bothering them. That's been my experience every time. I have also read recently that the staff may also be having a hard time with leadership. I think this might have been during the Covid times, but some of the things I read about the staff culture did not make me feel very good about wanting to go back to be brutally honest. Wonderful foodie experience, and probably the top highlight of my Portland trip. Some background: I love food. I like to travel for food. When I travel, I want to the unique stuff, I don't want something I can just get at home. The Bay Area is my home, and I consider myself spoiled with all different cuisines to choose from. I don't care about ambience as long as my taste buds are happy. I have not had a lot of Russian food. Well at Kachka you get both a wonderful atmosphere and unique flavors! Wonderful ambience, wonderful vibes, great food, fantastic service. And a cute store upstairs where you can purchase merchandise like shot glasses, Kachka cook book, cans of sardines, other preserved foods, and of course their coveted horseradish vodka. Omg that horseradish vodka! I was pretty close to buying a bottle, but I didn't want to check in my bag for my flight...but I was close to paying that fee. Reservations definitely recommended. We somehow spent a good 3 hours at the restaurant. We went with the tasting menu, where everyone at the table has to participate. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted great. I believe we ordered two extra plates. Sadly it's been a few months so I can't remember the details but I remember everything tasted good, and we were so full at the end. We also tried ~5 flavors of their vodka. As I mentioned before, the horseradish vodka is amazing (it doesn't have that weird nasal feeling but you get the savory flavor). I think my second favorite would be strawberry and then earl grey. There was a slight hiccup-I found a piece of plastic in my food but the manager was extremely apologetic and took this incident very seriously. Finally returned to Kachka after my first visit several years ago and it was just as good as ever. The Heirloom Tomato Salat was uber-fresh and delightful, especially on the glorious summer day we enjoyed that day. Dumplings are a must so this time I went all in on the meat dumplings, Siberian Polmeni? They were scrumptious and did not last long. My server suggested I mix up the flavors and get a mix of the cheese (Tuorog Vareniki?) and meat dumplings but I declined. After the fact I realized that I probably would have enjoyed the mix of flavors even more. Note to self. For entrees, I just had to have the Rabbit In a Clay Pot again. That was terrific also. I wrapped up a delightful evening with the Berries and Smetana desert that was super tasty. Not too big. Not too sweet. The space is very cozy and unique. Lots to look at. Literally flew to Portland just to have this meal with friends. Started with the pickle assortment, the stand out was the green tomato pickle with it's bright crunch. Next was the fried zucchini oladi, probably my favorite dish of the evening, light and crispy with a touch of sweetness from the corn. The short rib borscht was divine, personally would have loved bigger chunks of the beef in the broth. Then the dumplings came out: we ordered the Siberian pelmeni and the red pepper special for the evening. The slightly spicy, tomatoey sauce was perfect with the dumplings, it should definitely become a regular item on the menu. The cabbage rolls were hearty, and the shila plavi was creamy and comforting but the gremolata was vaguely fishy on my palate for some reason. SO glad we returned here to confirm Kachka never misses. Such a cool space with unique things to try. We had our favorites, but everything was excellent, so you really can't go wrong. We ordered: - beet salad -- one of our top dishes; something about the tahini sauce combined with the beets and toasted nuts just really hits - pickled things! Just nice to have as a side throughout the meal. - fish board -- if you like fishy things, you can't go wrong picking a couple that sound good. The bread/crackers the provide along with a schmear of butter are such a treat. - ***Siberian pelmeni*** -- the stars are for how blown away I was by this dish. I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. I could have eaten four more bowls of this. Something about that sour cream sauce, the bite of the dumplings dough, and the savory meat filling. SO GOOD. - Golubsti -- I really enjoyed the depth of flavor in the sauce here, sweeter than I'm used to with Polish golabki. - teas and treats -- this was a nice close to the meal, and felt authentic. Only criticism was that service was slow and a little consuming at times (different people dropping by for various things so we didn't know who our main server was), but it was busy and they had a large party in the back room. I appreciate their transparency about the service fee and their approach to compensating their employees well without significantly raising prices. It's good to see that it IS possible if leadership/owners are willing. Gorgeous interior and gorgeous aesthetic! My partner is Slavic so of course we had to stop in for this Russian dining. We couldn't make it for dinner so we settled for lunch. It was order at the counter for lunch service and had more limited options. We easily got a table on Monday afternoon and was greeted by a sweet server who was working the bar. She explained how everything worked and we got to ordering. We ordered the Siberian Pelmeni, Herring Under a Fur Coat, and the Borsch! Now I was pretty familiar with everything but the Herring toasts, and I will say that was the standout for me! It was perfectly savory with a touch of pickle from the herring and dill egg. The Pelmeni was pretty good, but pelmeni is just one of those things that taste pretty similar across the board in my experience. The borsch was fine, and the bread that came with was okay. For drinks, We got the Moscow Mule and Horseradish Vodka. The Mule at first had the strongest taste of ginger I've ever had in a mule. I liked ginger so I didn't mind, plus it went away after a while. The Horseradish infused vodka had such a strong horseradish taste, but that what you would expect. Went with a larger group of friends and the staff were so accommodating. The overall feel of the restaurant was very cozy and nostalgic. To start off we got tuorog vaseriki and siberian pelmere which are the savory dumplings. Overall, we liked the tuorog vaseriki ones the best, although they were both good. From the mains the chicken shashlik was well seasoned and cooked well. I think it was my favorite part of the meal, although it was a bit salty, but still good. The golubtsi was very comforting with the tomato and cabbage combo. As for the berries and smetana the berries balanced out the sweet of the whipped smetana and the cake. As for the drink I got the chaikhana which was quite nice. I enjoyed as the alcohol taste wasn't too strong and I enjoy the more citrusy drinks. Having Soviet Russian roots myself, I decided to try this place. I loved the Soviet kitschy decor and the overall theme of the place. I first saw this restaurant featured on a Netflix show and loved the story of the restaurant's name which relates to a survival story of the owner's grandmother during WWII. We came for lunch; the restaurant was only open for counter serve but that wasn't a problem at all! Sadly, the lunch menu wasn't as appealing to me as some of the dinner options. My mom tried the "hearing in fur coat" which is basically a 7 layer dip of Soviet ingredients on top of pickled herring; according to my mom, she makes it better! I tried a perojok with potatoes in dill which is a baked dough pocket. The dough was a bit off, more of a bread dough and not a traditional yeast-y dough I am familiar with for a delicious perojok. Kachka, located in the Eastside area of the city, is the genesis of Bonnie and Israel Morales. Bonnie was inspired by her heritage as a first-generation daughter of Jewish immigrants from Belarus. Like any good restaurant that has ideals in the traditions of Eastern European culture, dinner is turned into an event, thanks to a multitude of cultural dishes marked by vibrant flavors that stay true to their homeland with dishes such as dumplings, cured fish, and pickled vegetables. Kachka's success since opening as a restaurant over a decade ago has now birthed a marketplace on their second floor that sells packaged versions of their signature dumplings; their own flavored vodka line sold at various locations throughout the state of Oregon; and even their own upcoming clothing line. What brought me here on a recent trip to the Rose City was the fact that Kachka was one the top trending places on my Yelp app for Happy Hour in Portland. When I took a look at what was being offered from the variety of their dishes to their cocktails with their signature liqueur, I was on board to venture out east. From taking the local bus to a short walk down Southeast 11th Avenue arriving was simple, and getting a table despite having no reservation even for Happy Hour was easily achievable. The menu at Kachka is separated into categories including Cold Zakuski, which means snacks in Russian, Hot Zakuski, Pickles & Things, Mains, Cocktails, Wine, Bottles, Flights, Infusions, Vodka, Brandy, Zero Proof and Beer. Of course, I came for Happy Hour and with two cocktails to select from on this menu, I ordered their Moscow Mule, which featured lime vodka, lime, house ginger syrup and fever tree ginger beer. Served in a glass rather than a copper mug made for a refreshing treat to sip on as I waited for my food order. They had a number of options on their Happy Hour food menu, with pickled items to their famous cabbage rolls, it provided a nice variety of options that one may find while visiting the old-country. I asked my server Derek what the Sprat Snack was and it was a combination of tiny hot smoked fish, parsley mayo, light rye bread, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect starter with a combination of salty and savoriness that with a sip of a strong cocktail, of which my Moscow Mule was one of them, it was a nice meal to enjoy. Of course, I couldn't come to Kachka without trying their signature dumplings, and their Siberian Pelmeni which were dumplings filled with beef, pork, veal and onion. These dumplings, which are smaller than the ones that I traditionally am used to eating, were topped with chives and a dollop of sour cream. Perfect with every morsel, I should have asked for more sour cream as it enlivened every bite that I enjoyed. My total bill was 26 dollars and at Kachka they charge an automatic service fee of 22 percent to represent a fair wage for their employees. A return visit to Kachka is a foregone conclusion as they provide uniquely quaint food that represents traditional cuisine that you can't find in very many places. When we got here during lunchtime, it was already full so we were seated upstairs at the bar stools which felt nicer and more private which we liked so much. All were good, but Finland was the winner. The two dishes that stood out were the Under a fur coat. I am not usually a cooked, yet cold, fish supporter, but each layer blended well. The best compliment I received was after sharing photos of my meal on Instagram, my friend from Poland told me all the photos of Eastern European cuisine inspired her to home cook a meal as the food I had reminded her of her family's home cooking. Service was quite slow, but that wasn't necessarily the fault of our server himself. As for the food itself: - Meat and Cheese Charcuterie: 9/10. Mostly excellent meats and cheeses, a delicious hot mustard, and decent bread. A few dried fruits and nuts rounded it off. I've paid more for less quality charcuterie in other places. This is a great plate. - Pickles: 6/10. We love pickles, but the assortment of pickles were mostly lacking in flavor. But, it's cheap so not a big deal. - Beef and Lamb Dumplings: 8/10. Good homestyle dumplings with a nice creme sauce. A good shareable dish. - Hanger steak shashlik: 8/10. The pita bread it comes with is fantastic and the meat was tender and spiced well. - Golubtsi: 1,000/10. An absolute must order. Just like my mom used to make, but I didn't appreciate it as a kid. I've heard about this place a lot and was quite excited to try it... but it was probably one of the worst and most akward restaurant experiences I've had in recent memory solely based on service. We sat for a good 10-15 minutes with no one coming by. A couple sat next to us later and a waiter or manager came by to ask for their drinks immediately. That was odd so I flagged him down and when I asked to order drinks he literally rolled his eyes and said something like "ehh, sure". That was extremely weird but since it had been so long we were ready to order food as well. When I asked if we could order I got another eye roll and another hem and haw. I've never felt like I had to rush ordering or that I was bothering them to order.... It was akward and uncomfortable. During the dinner itself, we had 0 people come by other than to deliver food. No refills of water, no questions on how things were, nothing. We realized that we actually probably didn't have a waiter/waitress. I've never felt anywhere in Portland or the US in general that I was bothering the restaurant by eating there, but that's what it was. Kachka is a must go to restaurant in Portland. The atmosphere is lively and the interior is filled with unique decorations. The service was personable and timely. We did the Ruskie Zakuski experience, where they bring out multiple rounds of cold Russian appetizers. I would definitely recommend this option, as it was a fun way to try a variety of dishes. Some highlights of all the dishes include the Herring under a fur coat, the raspberry soup, and all the smoked fish additions. If you come in with a medium to small appetite the zakuski experience would be an adequate amount of food, however, by recommendation of our waitress we got some cheese dumplings to round out our meal. I'd gone to Kachka years ago and found it underwhelming. But when plans fell through and I needed a restaurant quick, I ended up here for a second round, and I'm so glad I got the re-visit. This was delicious, and my guest described the dumplings (here called pelmeni) the best he'd ever had in Portland. I loved that they could accommodate lactose intolerance and cook in sunflower oil, but leave the creams on the side for my friend. Eating here reminded me to always trust the servers. They know the menu, and they know how much - or how little - to eat. We were steered perfectly to a delicious meal in a beautiful spot. Glad I came back. read more
