It had been a while since we had lunch at Kachka, and happily, the food was just as good as ever, and the experience seemed a bit more seamless. Instead of ordering at the counter on the mezzanine level, we were greeted on the ground floor and handed menus at the bar, where we eventually ordered once we made our decisions. A good piece of advice is to always order dumplings. This remains a solid suggestion: the sour cherry variety served as both an appetizer and dessert. In between, I tried their combo meal, centered around a spectacular cabbage roll. My wife was thrilled with the Lavka Egg Sandwich, that seemed to have a bit of everything. The dining space remains charming, with high ceilings and terrific posters. Food arrived quickly, and was consumed with equal speed.
Reservations are strongly recommended here, especially if you want to take advantage of their happy hour. We had a 5:15 seating and it only got busier and busier as the evening went on, which was really humming all night. I particularly love the happy hour menu because it lets you try a broader range of dishes at a fraction of the usual price. We decided to skip the mains and just order a bunch of cold and hot zakuskis, though I definitely had my eye on the Golubsti for a future visit. Everything we tried was fantastic and felt like a real journey through post-Soviet cuisine, specifically via Belarus if I'm remembering correctly. The tangy assortment of pickled vegetables was a great start, followed by the ultra-salty (in the best way) and sumptuous caviar on toast. The savoriness of the meat dumplings was a great yin to the yang of the richness and creaminess of the farmer's cheese dumplings, and the cod liver on rye was beautifully balanced by a snowfall of fresh horseradish on top. The standout, though, was the Herring 'Under a Fur Coat', which the menu describes as a Russian 7-layer dip and which was absolutely spectacular, airy, and light in a way I was not expecting when they first set the dish down in front of me. Our server was warm, attentive, and always happy to jump in with recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. The space itself was full of energy, and the shop upstairs is also a fun bonus, with everything from the same dumplings they serve in the restaurant, but frozen, to a wide selection of wines and liquors. Overall a fantastic meal overall and already looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu!
Russian...not Russian...this is an interesting place and offers a unique experience that is not available in many cities in the U.S. The restaurant is nice with bar, single party seating, and community seating. The servers were pleasant and helpful. The food... it was hit or miss a little. There are only 3-4 main dishes, the rabbit was very good, but the cabbage rolls were just average. The potato pancakes served with the rabbit were prepared well, but had no complimentary sauce or flavor. The dumplings were tasty, the smoked fish snack app were good, but the rye bread was just okay. The lavash pocket was good, better with the dipping sauce. Everything is interesting and enjoyable to at least try once. Then you can decide on return trips.

In Portland looking for a unique dining experience with great atmosphere? Look no further! Pro tip: the more people in your table likely the better experience you will have since all the food is made to share. Each dish was dish with flavor and literally rich with either cream, cheese, or both. So definitely come hungry and in good spirits. There were definitely feel elements that felt more gimmicky than authentic, but nothing that distracted from the amazing dishes we ate.
What a treat this place was! Our party of six had so much good food. "pickles" (beet, cauliflower, celery, cucumber), midwest salat (broccoli, cauliflower, barberries, carrant, sesame, poppy), beet salat, chicken liver pashtet+prune butter+buckwheat chips, herring under a fur coat (potatoes, onions, carrots, beets,mayo,eggs), baltic sprat buterbrodi (smoked fish, mayo,egg,rye toast),three flavors of dumplings, rabbit on draniki (potato pancake), golubtsi (cabbage rolls w/ beef+lamb+pork) A flight of vodka shots, an excellent Georgian red wine. And lots and lots of fun!
Service is good, ambiance is better, food is fantastic, vodka amazing, but the experience was misleading. I would order à la carte: "under fur coat", buterbrodi, cholodetz, and assorted pickles for the table And have an entree to share, about on entree per two people to start. They give you the rules of the road on how to have "The Zakuski Experience", but under deliver when you order it. The food was terrific, but totality left a bitter taste, and it was not from the vodka. Table was hardly filled. Server did not tell us the vodka was à la carte. Left an establishment based on a grandparents love of food still hungry.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Kachka. My husband and I came here while visiting Portland had had a hefty meal. We tried several vodka infusions - birch, cherry, cocao nib, several dumplings, several cold dishes (should out to that amazing cold beat and cream soup my god), and loved it all. Our waiters were all attentive and friendly and seemed to genuinely want us to have a great time. This place seems to share waiters so multiple servers will help you throughout your meal. We loved it SO Much that we actually returned again the next day for their happy hour and tried even more things! The waiters even remembered us and our names! I wish I lived in Portland just so I could come here every week!
Kachka Mushroom salat: smoky, bright, sour, and earthy. Some bites almost tasted like bacon! Herring: Loved the dill. Not usually a beet fan but it worked well here. We came during valentines and they made it into a heart shape! Borscht: My first time. Very homey and comforting with nostalgic wheat bread. Dumplings: Soo tender with great onion flavor and a slightly sour creamy profile. One of my favorites. Rabbit: Incredibly tender and my first time trying, I'd say pretty similar to chicken. The earthy soup with the potato fritter was amazing. Service was fast and attentive!!
Kachka is something I'd recommend to anyone. They have a variety of food and a unique menu that has something for everyone. Their service was great too despite being very busy. We ordered a variety of food and their infused vodkas, they even had a horseradish flavored vodka! The inside is very cute and it was a very lively environment!
Excellent food, hospitable service that made me feel like I was having a family meal despite having a solo dinner, and some very unique or should I say "uncommon" dishes for the typical American restaurant scene. The cherry dumplings, chicken kiev croquettes and stuffed cabbage rolls were all to die for and well worth the visit! Props to the Chef!
Went here for my friend's birthday. It was my first time having Russian cuisine and it did not disappoint! I'm glad I was able to go with friends that knew what to order and we did family style so we could get a little bit of everything! The food was salty and savory it was all soooo delicious!! The drinks were incredible as well, I had a martini but I forget what one. Such a good low light ambiance I loved everything about this place! Our server was great and knowledgeable.
Everyone was absolutely wonderful. The service was great. We loved our waitress. We didn't feel rushed as some of the reviews have said the food was great, especially the rabbit, cabbage rolls, the herring with the fur coat and the Moscow mules! I'd say it's pricey, but it's nice to have a different dining experience so it is worth it. Every table was full so they are doing something right!

My friends and I dined at Kachka after having drinks nearby at Scotch Lounge. We walked in without a reservation for a party of three at 8:00 p.m. on a Thursday evening and we were luckily able to get seated quickly, despite the restaurant being super packed. Between the three of us, we ordered their Instagram-famous dish -- the herring under a fur coat ($15), pkhlovani khachapuri ($16), garlic tvorog vareniki ($17 base + $2 for the garlic), and a golubtsi ($26). I also ordered a horseradish-tini ($14). Every dish was a hit and I would not hesitate to order the exact same items again on subsequent visits. The herring under a fur coat is a very fun dish to explore. The intention is certainly to eat a bit of every layer in a single bite, but it's enjoyable trying out every layer on its own as well. The stuffed khachapuri was hot, fluffy, and the inside had a wonderful mix of onions and chard. This stuffed bread was very enjoyable on its own, even without anything to dip it it. The garlic tvorog vareniki -- their boiled dumplings, was the primary dish we came for, and the ones here are fantastic. The inside is stuffed with a fine cheese and each bite was both savory and tangy. The broth that the dumplings sit in is light, yet flavorful. One order was more than enough for everyone in our party to enjoy a few. Last but not least, the golubtsi -- stuffed cabbage rolls, was the only item off of the "mains" menu we ordered. This was my first time trying out this dish so I didn't really have a good reference point on how the dish should taste. However, even without this knowledge, the dish was absolutely delicious. The broth was sweet and sour, and the stewed cabbage was tender, yet not mushy. If there's a single comparison I could draw, the flavors of the dish reminded me of Russian borscht you might find at a Hong Kong diner. On the side of logistics, a mandatory 22% service fee is included on the bill. After you pay with your card, there's nothing left to sign and you're free to leave when you're done. Overall, I had a great meal at Kachka. Kachka provided a wonderful opportunity for me to try out foods I rarely encounter in a cuisine I'm completely foreign to. I highly recommend a visit if you happen to be in this part of town. read more
Of the 3 excellent dinners we had in Portland, this was hands down my FAVORITE. Overall experience 10*/5. Service from beginning to end was friendly to uber-friendly and knowledgeable. Suggestions were made and we took some of them, but also watched the food go by our table and picked what looked and sounded good. Started with a vodka flight, which was a must! Fun and interesting - not at all medicinal and very sippable with the food. Best dish was the beet saffron caviar - a generous portion with yummy accoutrements. The bilini were to die for. Pickles were also great and the salad (from the dacha) was a nice, fresh accompaniment. Next came the pelmeni and they were PERFECT. Craveable. Still thinking about them and didn't want to share with the hubby. Pork skewer was good, but no match for the other dishes. Dessert was berry shortcake-like and a very good version of itself. Beautiful presentation on all of the dishes. Was not expecting to LOVE this meal so much ... not a cuisine we come across often. But the vibe, decor, service and the FOOD made it a meal to remember. Not my typical go-to cuisine but when I'm in the mood for a savory/pickle-y meal this is exactly what I'm looking for! The server made us feel like we were in his Eastern European grandmother's house for dinner (in the most comfortable and welcoming way). The cocktails were excellent, especially if you can catch part of happy hour! The signature horseradish martini was unique, flavorful, and fun. The moscow mule was super gingery and tasty! From the food menu, the biggest standouts to me were the trout roe dip, kholodnik soup, and the hanger steak shashlik. The full experience of getting various plates to share along with your vodka (or vodka based cocktails) is very fun. Highly recommend checking it out if you're a fellow salty savory pickley fishy flavor lover. read more
First time eating Russian/Ukrainian food, and it was delicious!! Everything was seasoned well with various textures. Before going, I knew I wanted to try Herring Under a Fur Coat and the Rabbit in a Clay Pot, but I didn't realize dinner and lunch menus were different, so we were only able to try one of them. Herring Under a Fur Coat had these beautiful layers of raw fish, beets, potato, and egg. Our favorite of the meal! Baltic sprat buterbrodi were small finger sandwiches that had a good bite and mix of flavors. The Siberian pelmeni had the most familiar flavors as it reminded me of little Chinese dumplings but with a nice creamy sauce on top. Definitely coming back for dinner to try the other items! We parked on the street (1 hour parking) and were in and out of the restaurant in less than 30 min. The food came out very quickly! read more

We dined here for my fiancé's birthday, and overall had an excellent experience. We showed up 45 minutes early for our reservation and they accommodated us very gracefully. I would say the service feels relaxed and personable, which makes you feel welcome to ask questions. We loved the house infused vodka and the extensive drinks and cocktail list. I personally would have enjoyed more of a selection on hot foods, because that was my preference over the cold dishes, but that seems to be a highlight of the restaurant and was very well done for what it was. It's a lively atmosphere, great for groups and celebrations, maybe not the best choice for an intimate date. The stand-out dishes for me were the dumplings and the caviar. read more

The place very roomy. Staff are great and friendly. Tip get a reservation and parking bit be tough. For appetizer i had Baltic spray it was good but need a little acid and touch of salt and for entrée I had the rabbit in a clay pot it was really good specially the sauce. read more
Oh my!! What a wonderful experience. Service was on point and very welcoming. Music slight playing. The food was delicious!! After I left and mentioned to other locals, they all mentioned what I ordered as one of their favorites. Every thing was full of flavor. read more
We have been here a handful of times and the food is good. They do have lots of options for alcohol. We have tried many of the vodkas and beers as well as wine. Those were always solid. This is a fun place to take family or friends that are not familiar with this type of food. Service is usually subpar if you ask me. Staff are not very attentive at times and sometimes makes you feel like you are rushed or bothering them. That's been my experience every time. I have also read recently that the staff may also be having a hard time with leadership. I think this might have been during the Covid times, but some of the things I read about the staff culture did not make me feel very good about wanting to go back to be brutally honest. You can check that out on your own. I'm not saying don't go, but everyone can conform their own opinion. read more
Finally returned to Kachka after my first visit several years ago and it was just as good as ever. The Heirloom Tomato Salat was uber-fresh and delightful, especially on the glorious summer day we enjoyed that day. Dumplings are a must so this time I went all in on the meat dumplings, Siberian Polmeni? They were scrumptious and did not last long. My server suggested I mix up the flavors and get a mix of the cheese (Tuorog Vareniki?) and meat dumplings but I declined. After the fact I realized that I probably would have enjoyed the mix of flavors even more. Note to self. For entrees, I just had to have the Rabbit In a Clay Pot again. That was terrific also. I wrapped up a delightful evening with the Berries and Smetana desert that was super tasty. Not too big. Not too sweet. The space is very cozy and unique. Lots to look at. Very enjoyable to spend an evening in. Service was spectacular. Kachka remain one of my most favorite places in Portland! read more
Kachka was my very first experience eating Russian food and it did not disappoint! Their menu is served family style (not required), but it was nice to collectively order and try dishes with my group. They also offer a variety of infused vodkas, some as simple as strawberry and some as complex as horseradish. My favorite items were the Siberian Pelmeni dumplings and Rabbit in a Claypot. The decor was nice and the "babushka" like table cloths added a homey touch. Very happy to have had the opportunity to try Kachka while visiting Portland! read more
I absolutely love this place. Kachka has such a lively fun atmosphere that it immediately puts you in a great mood the moment you walk in. I have been a few times now and each visit has been consistently excellent. I have often sat at the bar which I highly recommend. The interaction with the bartenders is fantastic and they are knowledgeable engaging and genuinely excited to talk about the menu and drinks. I usually stick with their vodka which is extensive and incredibly well curated. It is such a big part of the experience and pairs perfectly with the food. The zakuski are a must and I especially love the caviar and roe selections as well as Under a Fur Coat which is both comforting and surprisingly refined. Everything feels thoughtful without ever feeling heavy or overly serious. The menu is full of dishes that beg to be shared so coming with a few others is the best way to experience it. That way you can try as much as possible and explore the range of flavors they offer. Everything I have had here has been delicious and well executed. Kachka is one of those places that manages to be fun flavorful and memorable all at once. It is a restaurant I recommend often and one I look forward to returning to every time I am back in Portland. read more
Wonderful foodie experience, and probably the top highlight of my Portland trip. Some background: I love food. I like to travel for food. When I travel, I want to the unique stuff, I don't want something I can just get at home. The Bay Area is my home, and I consider myself spoiled with all different cuisines to choose from. I don't care about ambience as long as my taste buds are happy. I have not had a lot of Russian food. Well at Kachka you get both a wonderful atmosphere and unique flavors! Wonderful ambience, wonderful vibes, great food, fantastic service. And a cute store upstairs where you can purchase merchandise like shot glasses, Kachka cook book, cans of sardines, other preserved foods, and of course their coveted horseradish vodka. Omg that horseradish vodka! I was pretty close to buying a bottle, but I didn't want to check in my bag for my flight...but I was close to paying that fee. Reservations definitely recommended. We somehow spent a good 3 hours at the restaurant. We went with the tasting menu, where everyone at the table has to participate. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted great. I believe we ordered two extra plates. Sadly it's been a few months so I can't remember the details but I remember everything tasted good, and we were so full at the end. We also tried ~5 flavors of their vodka. As I mentioned before, the horseradish vodka is amazing (it doesn't have that weird nasal feeling but you get the savory flavor). I think my second favorite would be strawberry and then earl grey. There was a slight hiccup-I found a piece of plastic in my food but the manager was extremely apologetic and took this incident very seriously. Literally flew to Portland just to have this meal with friends. Started with the pickle assortment, the stand out was the green tomato pickle with it's bright crunch. Next was the fried zucchini oladi, probably my favorite dish of the evening, light and crispy with a touch of sweetness from the corn. The short rib borscht was divine, personally would have loved bigger chunks of the beef in the broth. Then the dumplings came out: we ordered the Siberian pelmeni and the red pepper special for the evening. The slightly spicy, tomatoey sauce was perfect with the dumplings, it should definitely become a regular item on the menu. The cabbage rolls were hearty, and the shila plavi was creamy and comforting but the gremolata was vaguely fishy on my palate for some reason. Service was prompt and friendly, and the decor is super cute. Amazing meal! read more
Best meal we had in Portland. Truly wonderful ambiance with amazing food, no wonder it's so hyped up. We made a reservation, and I'm super glad we did, because it was totally packed. SO glad we returned here to confirm Kachka never misses. Such a cool space with unique things to try. We had our favorites, but everything was excellent, so you really can't go wrong. We ordered: - beet salad -- one of our top dishes; something about the tahini sauce combined with the beets and toasted nuts just really hits - pickled things! Just nice to have as a side throughout the meal. - fish board -- if you like fishy things, you can't go wrong picking a couple that sound good. The bread/crackers the provide along with a schmear of butter are such a treat. - ***Siberian pelmeni*** -- the stars are for how blown away I was by this dish. I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. I could have eaten four more bowls of this. Something about that sour cream sauce, the bite of the dumplings dough, and the savory meat filling. SO GOOD. - Golubsti -- I really enjoyed the depth of flavor in the sauce here, sweeter than I'm used to with Polish golabki. - teas and treats -- this was a nice close to the meal, and felt authentic. Only criticism was that service was slow and a little consuming at times (different people dropping by for various things so we didn't know who our main server was), but it was busy and they had a large party in the back room. I appreciate their transparency about the service fee and their approach to compensating their employees well without significantly raising prices. It's good to see that it IS possible if leadership/owners are willing. LOVE Kachka, would absolutely return again if I found myself in Portland, if only for those life-altering little dumplings. read more
Gorgeous interior and gorgeous aesthetic! My partner is Slavic so of course we had to stop in for this Russian dining. We couldn't make it for dinner so we settled for lunch. It was order at the counter for lunch service and had more limited options. We easily got a table on Monday afternoon and was greeted by a sweet server who was working the bar. She explained how everything worked and we got to ordering. We ordered the Siberian Pelmeni, Herring Under a Fur Coat, and the Borsch! Now I was pretty familiar with everything but the Herring toasts, and I will say that was the standout for me! It was perfectly savory with a touch of pickle from the herring and dill egg. The Pelmeni was pretty good, but pelmeni is just one of those things that taste pretty similar across the board in my experience. The borsch was fine, and the bread that came with was okay. For drinks, We got the Moscow Mule and Horseradish Vodka. The Mule at first had the strongest taste of ginger I've ever had in a mule. I liked ginger so I didn't mind, plus it went away after a while. The Horseradish infused vodka had such a strong horseradish taste, but that what you would expect. Went with a larger group of friends and the staff were so accommodating. The overall feel of the restaurant was very cozy and nostalgic. To start off we got tuorog vaseriki and siberian pelmere which are the savory dumplings. Overall, we liked the tuorog vaseriki ones the best, although they were both good. From the mains the chicken shashlik was well seasoned and cooked well. I think it was my favorite part of the meal, although it was a bit salty, but still good. The golubtsi was very comforting with the tomato and cabbage combo. As for the berries and smetana the berries balanced out the sweet of the whipped smetana and the cake. As for the drink I got the chaikhana which was quite nice. I enjoyed as the alcohol taste wasn't too strong and I enjoy the more citrusy drinks. Overall, a great dinner spot to go out with friends ( the more the better so you can try different things). read more

Tbh, I had high hopes for this place due to its popularity but it was okay for me. When we got here during lunchtime, it was already full so we were seated upstairs at the bar stools which felt nicer and more private which we liked so much. The young lady at the counter was really nice. Loved their service. I've tried their borscht, piroshki and the herring salad. Borscht was lacking some authentic flavor. For piroshki, I was expecting fried one but they brought baked one. It was freshly baked, the dough was delicious! Herring salad was not my thing so I don't want to rate it. Overall it was a good experience but I don't think I would be back. read more

Hi Barbera! Our lunch service is counter service and is walk-in only. Feel free to pop in any time between 11am and 2 pm.

I am gluten-free and this is one of my favorite restaurants. If you tell them, they will accommodate. They will replace breads and crackers with potato slices or these delicious pancakes!
Do they serve the Ruskie Experience at lunch?
We had a delicious Sunday brunch. Some of our party did vodka flights. Dumplings, pickled herring, the works. Very nice way to eat.
Are children allowed?
They are definitely allowed. But depending on your children, you may or may not want to bring them. We enjoyed a leisurely 2-hour meal while we were there, with many explorations of new and unfamiliar foods. If your kids can handle that sort of…
