I came here for a work lunch and had a great time! The inside of the restaurant is very cozy and homey, and the staff is very friendly. How the menu works here is that everything is done family-style and meant to be shared. You can also order in either a smaller or bigger portion, so that you can try many different dishes. Our group ordered a variety of appetizers, salads, meats, and seafood and everything was delicious. I really enjoyed being able to try a little bit of each dish and thought that the way that everything was cooked was very light and brought in seasonal ingredients perfectly. We were recommended this restaurant and we were so impressed. We dined on a Saturday at about 5:30pm. Parking: street parking. We were lucky enough to find a spot a block away on the same street. Location: perfectly situated amongst a row of coffee shops, wine bar etc. charming street that you can safely walk around. We were greeted the moment we walked into the cozy restaurant with high ceiling and were given the option of inside or outside. We grab an inside table and menu plus water were brought to us fairly quickly. We needed a slight instruction but got it and started to write our orders. We went with a variety of items. All were very decently priced. Our waitress knew her menu but also knew her wine very well. My white wine was such a perfect pair with everything i ate. Food came out about 5-7mins after we ordered. Each dish was just amazing in flavor and texture. We were so happy with everything and by the end of dinner, not one plate had a piece of crumbs left of it. Everything is made when you order and as part of the menu rotates due to what they have delivered, we were extremely happy with our selections. Restaurant: such a nice and warm ambiance. When they were cooking fish, you can slightly smell it, like home cooking and you were sitting by the kitchen. Service: amazing staff. They all worked together to get us drinks, food and always checking on us. I do not give too many 5 stars but I had a wonderful dinner experience and this restaurant is my recommendation when you're in Portland. read more

They were able to get us a table for 6 on relatively short notice when our original reservations for 7 were cancelled last minute due to a power outage. We showed up at 8:00 as instructed and the server literally said oh shit I forgot about them. They moved a party of two to a two top to clear a table for us and we sat down. We had one in our party who has serious food issues and we asked if the rest of the party could do the chef's choice which would have been five people at $60 each plus our sixth person was going to order about $25 worth of food we were told no. When asked if there was any soda we were told they had Pellegrino and that's it nothing with caffeine but coffee. When we were served our coffee for dinner one of our party, who is diabetic, asked for a sweetener and was told staunchly we only have sugar. How precious. Service was great from the younger server and frankly a little snotty from the older one. Food was fine, but I'm not going to bother to review anything because nothing was note worthy. Oh, except to say that the devil's food cake which should be completely chocolate, had a cream cheese frosting. Fortunately that's one of my favorite things but it's certainly not a devil's food cake. read more

We've always wanted to try this place but it's always really packed. My husband's birthday was on a Thursday, so we decided to give it a try and we just barely lucked into a table. This is a great special occasion or splurge night place as it's a bit on the spendy side. It has a great neighborhood feel and it's small, so plan on waiting. The whole idea is small plates and I felt a central theme was simple but great quality dishes that are extremely well prepared. We started with a 2/3 of a bottle of white wine that was nice and dry, and plenty of wine for us. The server recommended about 5 to 6 small dishes for two and that was perfect. We started with bread that was obviously locally made and served with an incredible butter. If I'm noticing the butter, you know it's great. We also had the green salad, which was just greens, but they were dressed in this amazing and unique tasting vinaigrette. I definitely felt I tasted olive, more so than just olive oil. It was quite tasty. For the main part of the dinner, we had perfectly cooked hangar steak, chicken with cheese, mushrooms in a terrific butter sauce and cabbage casserole. My husband said the cabbage casserole looked sort of like a cabbage lasagna and it tasted sort of like that too, very chees-y and decadent. We were pretty full after all of that and declined dessert. The dessert menu seemed pretty plain, but we did see another table sharing red velvet cake that looked good. Service as amazing, the two servers seemed almost orchestrated, with things suddenly appearing and disappearing. I highly recommend Navarre! read more

Intimate place with friendly service. Reviews were a little split. My mom absolutely loved the food here. I thought it was okay. I did love the Halibut but some of the other items were just average for me. She loved the Braised Lamb (maybe I'm just not a big prunes fan) but she thought the blend of Moroccan spices in it was divine. I found the spring onions a bit too challenging to eat personally. Cauliflower was pretty good. Mom also loved the wine selection so if you're a wine drinker, come have at it. read more

The trouble started with ordering. The server does not take your order. You are required to use a checklist to select your items, tick off boxes to choose large or small plates, and the "Specials", which are most of the menu, require you to hand write the names of your selections. Imagine what this takes with a party of six. The single pen provided was a small felt tip marker. The very high prices lead you to believe the food will be gourmet and top knotch. Every dish was surprisingly flavorless, no seasoning. Are there no spices or salt in this kitchen? I ordered 3 small plates and was grateful I did not order large. The Rabbit Rilletes with Pain de Epices was a bland blob of ground rabbit with 3 thin small slices of bread that were burned with blackened edges! The Trout and Scallop cakes with lemon was 2 thin wafers, not cakes, about 2 inches wide, with a small wedge of lemon and this costs 19 dollars! The Potato, Turnip, Garlic and Herb Gratin had not even a hint of garlic or herbs, a bland, wet rectangle. Others in our party had beets or squash which consisted of only plain roasted cubes of the vegetables with zero seasoning. Not to mention the uncomfortable, cramped seating. This is not fine dining in any sense of the word. Needless to say, we will not be returning. read more

I always prefer outdoor seating but it was brisk so we went inside. Definitely a spot for wineries as they had a huge menu for drinks but we went for brunch. Omelette was good but ask for hot sauce if you like spice and it tasted much better with a sweet sauce. Greens and veggies are fresh from the farm daily so we got greens and it was fresh. Eggs Benedict were the best as it had a soft English muffin and added more hot sauce. They have Portland teas and served with hot kettle on your table for easily refills. I had it bookmarked for the longest time and finally decided to try them after a taking a short break from eating out every weekend (It's a hard life being a foodie y'all ). It was a Friday evening and we lucked out and got a seat right away with no wait . So the restaurant is small(ish) and the seating is really close together but it still has an intimate vibe . we decided to sit at the counter/Bar and had a good view of the kitchen and the staff effortlessly dishing out menu item after menu item . The menu is Tapas style so everything comes as a small plate and they give you a paper menu to tick mark all the food items at the same time and all the food items almost come out one after other . Owing to the limited space ,it was a challenge to keep all the food on the table or to pass it around . Our waitress kept knocking things over because there was hardly space for her to reach and place stuff. We had - Lamb shoulder Potato pancakes- Highly recommend Cheese plate Grassy Olive oil Bread Chocolate Mousse Lots and lots of Wines and they let you taste before you order, which I appreciated . The portion sizes are small , so I would recommend getting more if in doubt . Service was good and our server had excellent recommendations based on what we told her . Decent, friendly service but unremarkable, overpriced food. The ordering process is awkward and laborious - requiring the guest to check different sized boxes and write down their choices. We ordered a small spread of small/large dishes: the single bone-in chicken breast was completely dry and smothered in a flavorless, thick sauce; small roasted potatoes with cheese consisted of five 1/2" thick slices of small potato with sauce on the plate; the cabbage gratin was undercooked and soggy rather than crisp; salad was just a tiny portion of well-dressed crispy leaves on a small plate. Overall our party agreed that almost everything lacked seasoning (salt). The wine list is well curated but glass prices are high. Creative menu but execution was lacking. read more

Great spot for interesting eats with a menu that changes seasonally. Like most tapas restaurants, I've mixed feelings. Love being able to try a variety of food but with each dish hovering at the $8-14 range, prices add up and sometimes I leave still feeling hungry. Dishes are inventive, the menus curated from what's available locally which I really appreciate. Proteins go beyond the basics with rabbit, foie gras, lamb and duck sharing space on the menu with pork, cod, trout and shrimp so there is something for everyone's taste. The veggie dishes are plentiful and this is where they shine. Escarole with garlic, olive oil and lemon is both simple and delicious. Roasted carrots carmelized and addictive. Seared leaks, roasted beets, carmelized brussel sprouts, kale, chard, cabbage - they are all seasoned, prepared and served beautifully. The atmosphere is intimate, this is a great date night and special occasion restaurant. At the same time, it works for groups where you can order more to get a good sampling since odds are high that many dishes sound enticing. From the friendly service, to each individual plate, my partner and I were in agreement - bumped to the top of the list of places to revisit. We were looking for straightforward, local, fresh, and artfully nuanced brunch, and that's precisely what we found at Navarre. *We ventured out a bit later than the standard, hot-spot brunch timeframes and the space was nearly cleared out with over an hour and a half left for the dedicated brunch service - we were a bit surprised but we were not concerned, and the perks of being sat immediately when we had anticipated a wait was nothing to argue about. The timing being mentioned bc they had run out of a couple of tasty sounding items, but the entire menu looked to be a bevy of deliciousness, so it was no bother to our intentions/experience. This restaurant impressed me tremendously. I visited Navarre on a Saturday evening with two friends. It was a terrific choice for so many reasons. Their impressive and rather unique menu is updated daily, based upon delivery of locally grown csa foods. So many farm to table choices and eclectic flavor combinations! I was pleased with the generously sized tapas portions. Also, prices were very reasonable. I enjoyed three tapas plates, one drink, and one dessert, with a tab of less than $60. We especially appreciated their method of collecting food orders. Diners receive a pad of paper with the menu, and are encouraged to submit their written orders intermittently throughout the meal, rather than all at once. Because of this, we were able to time our tapas as desired and not rush through the meal. Manageable noise level, and nice large tables for lots of tapas plates. Service was on point; friendly and knowledgeable, though not overly chatty. Extensive wine list. Lovely decor and pleasant lighting. It was a long wait for a mediocre meal at best. The best part of the meal was the bread and butter. The clams were very salty, the cabbage au gratin was more like formed stewed cabbage, the Raab with Gruyere very salty and only a mouthful could be tolerated. The oysters on the half shell were good as was the flank steak. The wait staff were upbeat and attentive, but if they ate some of the food I do not believe they would make the same recommendations. You can order small plates or large plates of every dish, so whether it's date night or you have a large group you can try a ton of different dishes. Food was OK+. Waitress was nice. Dining experience was awful. The restaurant is very very dark, the text on the menu is very very tiny, and you have to write your own order on a checklist. A table for 2 is the size of a postage stamp and they bring you many plates to share all at once. Some plates, including bone-in chicken, require cutting to share, and I almost knocked over our glasses of water and wine. It was the most cramped and awkward dining experience I've ever had. I really wish we had a better dining experience here. First of all when I had read "small European dishes" I was not expecting a world war canned beans and lack of seasoning and meats experience. We ordered a few different dishes - very limited options as we are pescatarian - we had oysters - a squid dish- a carrot soup and a salad and then coffee and dessert. We had a cold lentil and egg dish with literally no seasoning - as though they had strained lentils out of a can and placed a hard boiled egg on top. The soup that we were excited about was also somehow tasteless - it was carrot soup and all we could taste was cream without any flavor...not even carrot. The squid plate we had also was too salty and lacking a key component of squid (fava beans out of a can) Also the service - there was a total of 8 tables that were dining at once (COVID dining) and 3 servers - and I think the 2 hours we were there 1.5 hours alone we were just waiting to ask for salt, a spoon, to order drinks...to order dessert. And also they "forgot" one of our main entrees (the rockfish that we ended up cancelling as we had already been there over 1.5 hours). Horrible. I will give them 2 stars for being open post COVID and having heat lamps and their raw oysters and some cream espresso dessert that we enjoyed. read more

Talking to Chef John, I am very impressed by how he cares and picks his ingredients from local farm, love his passion and mind-set for food and his cooking. We had fresh green mix, fava leaves (not beans!) salad, grilled leeks, wild caught poached salmon, pickled water melon. Enjoyed a lot of color and freshness of each dishes. They also make house made pickles, this is the way they don't waste any overgrown vegetables or sometime save dishes during the season (like winter time) when we don't get enough fresh vegetables. Normally open only for dinner but have brunch for weekend. Also love local flower shop displays seasonal bucket to welcome you. read more

WOW I'm so impressed! This place doesn't get much press so I had to hear about it from 2 friends. I had the garlic shrimp, duck breast, summer squash and peach apple pie for dessert. Each dish was fabulous and I took home some of each. Francine gave me incredible service and I was so impressed with their wine list, I've never before seen so many wines offered by the glass! It had been years since I'd been to Navarre and we left wondering "why don't we come here more often?!" So many excellent wines by the glass and super knowledgeable wine staff. The restaurant did not do anything wrong . Everything was fine , just not particularly fun or delicious. I could not find a current menu on their website, and that was part of the issue. If we had known our options, I would have better understood this was a poor fit. I ended up here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, because the lines at nearby places were way too long. I was a little bit taken aback by the overly complicated menu, but with that out of the way, I had one of the best breakfasts I've had in years. I had salt cod and poached eggs. Both were incredible. The service was pleasant and attentive. The food was unremarkable and uninspired. And the menu was a study in absurdity. If you have to provide a tutorial for your customer to understand how to order food in your restaurant, you've drifted too far from the realm of sensible hospitality. The menu consists of various tear sheets where the diner must record line by line the items they intend to order. They must choose whether or not they want a small or large plate. And--that's not all--the diner must complete one of these sheets for each course. Is this not the job of the server? What's more, there are numerous options that change regularly, and all of these options suggest that this kitchen is doing none of them exceptionally well. We opted for the only option a sane person would check, which was the tasting menu that relieves you of this nonsense. The meal started with some decent bread and a nice pate, but it moved along to a series of bland vegetable dishes. Next, the trout was dry and salty, the tuna was desiccated and overcooked, and the pork was similarly overcooked and unadorned. There's not any interesting and flavorful work with sauces happening. Or textures or seasonings or heat. It all left a homogenous taste in the mouth and a craving for something to dance in a room where all the dishes were exhausted on the floor. I would not return. My dining companion likes the place. I expect the people that do enjoy the novelty of the parade of small (or large!) dishes. I would have rather eaten a burger. read more

We had bread w OO and butter, braised greens, trout in parchment (everyones favorite) , the French cheese plate (I think there were 4 small cheeses), fava beans with blue cheese and the potato gratin. We probably could have done a couple more but this was good for us. Along with a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. It was a really great meal. Yeah - this is pretty much the real deal - definitely recommend the house tapas- they bring out like 12 different plates of protein, veggies and carb--with home made bread pieces and very very good olive oil! The trout was definitely the highlight of the night - locally caught! 90 bucks for two so it's definitely for a special occasion but it's probably the best locally sourced prix fix i've ever had in portland and for under $50 you really can't complain!
