This a small modern and pretty looking place. We loved some of the food. Not all of it. The service is slow. We waited a while to order. The beet salad was good, but needed salt. No salt and pepper on tables because they think you will like it how they salt it or not salt it. The Oysters and Scallops were yummy! The potato leek soup was dissapointing and not great. The lasanga was good, but small potion and nothing exciting. Service was okay. I think for me the prices are pretty up there for small plates, slow service and inconsistent food.

Finally, after a few years of seeing Davenport pop up on the Portland Dining Month lists, we made it over here. We actually walked by the place without realizing it - their name on the door is very subtle. The dining room inside is cozy - tables are fairly close together. I don't remember hearing music, so it must have been at a low enough volume that we didn't even notice, which is great. Too many places these days blast music at you at dinner. At Davenport the food, service and ambiance were all fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate to come back. We went with the Portland Dining Month menu: beets, scallops, and panna cotta for my mom; radicchio salad, steak and panna cotta for me. We also got an order of the witch nettle dumplings because I was curious. It was quite dumpling-like but it was based on the greens with plenty of cream and sheep cheese. They were good. The beets were really good and came plated with some greens making it look like they'd just been plucked from the garden. The radicchio salad was quite bitter as you'd expect from that plant, but the vinaigrette helped cut some of the bitterness. Scallops were perfect - super rare and just seared on the outside. We loved the fennel salad with grapefruit on the side. The steak was served medium rare - it was well seasoned, tender and easy to cut. For dessert, we both had the panna cotta and I'm glad we didn't have to share. It was the perfect texture, with hints of what we thought were cardamom, and it wasn't too sweet. I'd come back just for this panna cotta. Our server was fantastic. It's been a while since we've experienced such good service in Portland. She was super attentive about water, explained dishes and wines to us, and just checked in on us the right amount. Overall, Davenport checked all the boxes. Can't wait for our next visit!

Portland Dining Month review. First- the staff was excellent! I also had a great beer. First courses of beet was fine, nothing standout. The endive salad was fine, although the endives were a bit bitter, not what I've been used to with endive. The mains-The SEARED scallop was cold, with all the salt on just one quarter of the scallop?! The steak was tiny and flavorless and room temp at best. The "cheese plate" yes there was cheese on the plate manchego perhaps (not great) but it should really have been called a Marcona almond plate. It was a joke. The panna cotta was good. With our two $33 meals, 2 beers and tip we were at just under $100. For that price this was such a let down. I reached out to the restaurant as I hate to leave negative reviews but I did not get a response. This was probably the most disappointing meal I've ever had eating out.

We showed up a half hour early, as an offering to the reservation gods for all the times we've been five minutes late. They were cool enough to accommodate us, and they took this opportunity to bitch to us about the couple that canceled a minute before their reservation. Decent martini, and we had a real nice pinot noir by the glass. Interesting pile of empty wine boxes stacked up behind a large curtain. It appears as if they throw them over there haphazardly, but I'm sure it is probably some sort of art installation. The oysters honestly tasted as though they had been rinsed of their liquor. I've seen people tossed overboard for lesser crimes. They were almost flavorless. Like eating a pickle only to find out it is actually a cucumber. Maybe the shucker goofed, no biggie. It was a bitterly cold night, but not as bitter as the radicchio salad. We felt as though we were being poisoned. I went to the restroom to check my vitals. There was piss all over the seat. Not surprising once I realized I had to hold up the seat with my knee while I was peeing. Luckily they had a slimy bottle of peppermint Dr. Bronner's on the residue caked sink, so I could clean myself up. I'm being sarcastic, but the truth is it didn't really bother me. I actually enjoy putting on nice clothes and rubbing piss all over myself. The scallops tasted fishy. Bad fishy. And this is just my personal preference, but pureed cauliflower does not make a great pairing for sea scallops outside of a hospital cafeteria. I don't understand the need to drizzle scallops in olive oil either, maybe it is too hide the fishiness? We both enjoyed the lamb cheeks. Relatively speaking, they were tasty. I wish our server had recommended we order four servings and nothing else. Just a side note, it is odd that the plates come one at a time as if it is a course meal, even though they advertise it as tapas you should share. Then again, there does not seem to be any cohesion between dishes across the menu. It's like a box of recipes spilled on the floor and they grabbed ten at random. The panna cotta was a bland and boring finish, but at least it was over. We each had one bite and made like trees. On the way home we stopped at Beulahland to salvage the night with a slice of pumpkin pecan pie. Their restroom was refreshingly clean in comparison.

Navarre has been part of Portland's food scene since the early 2000s and guests are encouraged to explore a variety of small and large plates and eat however they want. The cuisine draws from French, Italian, and Spanish traditions, while incorporating seasonal Pacific Northwest ingredients. Based on my research, Navarre also works with 47th Avenue Farms, with specials changing based on what arrives each week. So, getting to sit back and let the kitchen choose ten courses felt especially fitting for Navarre. Instead of deciding what we wanted, we got to experience a little bit of everything. We started with a pâté dish served with green beans and Dijon mustard, which was delicious and had a wonderful savory richness. There was also raw radish with butter, which was a very unique combination! It wasn't my favorite dish of the night, but I appreciated how unexpected it was. The cod over a green sauce was one of my favorites. The fish was excellent, and the sauce really brought everything together. We also had a delicious crab-and-potato cake that paired beautifully with a kohlrabi salad. The meats were excellent as well. The steak was delicious, and the lamb was flavorful and tender, served with what seemed to be a quinoa-like grain. We also had greens and a salad that helped balance some of the richer courses. And then there was the potato gratin. My gosh....flavorful, crispy, and wonderfully comforting. Honestly, potatoes rarely need to do much convincing with me. I loved the variety of the tasting menu. Over ten courses, we got fish, meat, vegetables, salads, grains, and plenty of different textures and flavors. It felt less like simply ordering dinner and more like going on a little culinary adventure. This was an extremely memorable meal for us!

The menu isn't marked for allergens, and our server wasn't quite sure what was safe for me - - she said to stay away from the gratins and that she would double check on the items we ordered to make sure they were ok. I'm not sure if what I had was made the way the chef normally prepares the dishes or if they altered dishes for my diet. So, keep this in mind while I run through my thoughts. Food came out in good time. Our table was filled with lots of little plates. Most of the vegetable dishes we ordered were kinda dry - cauliflower, zuchini, greens and the beets were ok. Nothing really special. The shrimp and tuna were prepared well. Wine, beer and cider only. Server was efficient. Street parking.

Pulled up to Pollo Bravo on Killingsworth and immediately loved the location. Easy, neighborhood energy. The kind of spot that feels like it's about to become "your place." Ordered takeaway -- rotisserie chicken (my preference, always) and the cauliflower. Let's talk chicken. Rotisserie over grilled. I stand by it. Juicy. Well cooked. Light enough to feel healthy, satisfying enough to feel like a proper meal. No dry nonsense. No over-seasoned chaos. Just solid execution. Is it the best chicken I've ever had? No. Is it flirting with the medal dais? Absolutely. Now the cauliflower. Whatever that green sauce was... keep it coming. Bottle it. Franchise it. It elevated the whole situation. I would order that again purely as a sauce delivery vehicle. Service? Quick. Smiling. Efficient. In and out with zero friction. We appreciate professionals. I grabbed takeaway this time, but I could easily see this as: * Casual dinner with my girl * Low-pressure link-up with friends * "Let's eat something that feels responsible" night Would I come back? The breading was perfectly crispy, but a flaky crust I personally feel better paired to fish than chicken or pork (assuming they use the same batter for the pork loin). Potatoes were ok, but not remarkable. Spices were right, but just didn't sing for me. Service was nice enough. I did like the aioli as a dipping side for the taters. Being able to get anchovies in vinegar, ham croquettes, and a Belgian beer takes me back to some of my favorite travel experiences, and the Pix Patisserie dessert options continue to provide a thrill. I have two quibbles that keep me from adding the fifth star - the Tortilla Espanola (closer to an egg and potato frittata than a Mexican tortilla) is served with a drizzle of red and a white sauces. A well made Tortilla (and this one is very nicely done) doesn't really need any embellishment. I'll try to remember to ask for the sauce on the side next time. The second issue I have is that the servers didn't appear to have received enough training to do justice to the things on the menu. Bar Vivant has a lot of wonderful offerings, enough of them that they really deserve better descriptions and recommendations.
