Tucked into the neighborhood next to OK Omens, Naso is such a gem for a cozy date night. The vibe is warm, friendly, and totally unpretentious...the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable whether you know a ton about wine or just want a good glass and good conversation. Also, don't sleep on the mystery bag wine bottles. Such a fun little surprise and a great way to try something new without spending a fortune. We didn't eat since we had dinner reservations next door, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked seriously delicious. Definitely adding it to the list for next time. read more

I came to Naso to see one of my favorite jazz duos perform, and am very impressed! The interior is BRIGHT (almost too bright due to the entire storefront being mostly glass), modern, warm, and inviting. The interior is meticulously clean and spotless. There are tables, bar seats, and a loveseat right up by where the performers perform. Service is incredibly personal and helpful! I'm not a wine drinker at all, and was very happy to see a great selection of non-alcoholic beverages, including "BNF" brand kombucha. The incredibly helpful person who took care of me the whole night warned me in advance that the komucha I selected was very high in caffeine, which was very thoughtful and appreciated! Food is far better than expected! I was concerned that the 8" pizza would be too small, but it wasn't. It is THICK, and VERY tasty! There are three varieties available, and I opted for the spicy sausage, pesto, and cheese based on the recommendation of my hostess. The pizza was very fresh, very unique, very flavorful, and surprisingly filling. The only downside has nothing to do with the venue itself, but rather its neighborhood. Parking is TERRIBLE! I wound up having to park several blocks away as the only available parking is street parking, and all nearby spots were occupied when I visited. read more

Was looking for a dark and brooding atmosphere with great wine and great music and TADA! It's within walking distance of my house. I came solo early on a Thursday so got to enjoy the whole place to myself. Service was great, 'charcuterie for one' was a nice accommodation for single patrons and I really enjoyed my glass of wine. read more

Very cool spot. Went to see a family member's band here this week, and it was wonderful. The space is small, but, so charming, and don't think the word is out yet, so a great time to go. Everything and I mean everything is intentional. From the drinks, food and glassware to the incredible custom wood bar top, and even the restroom that has an almost hidden wood door, flush to the wall. Staff is great here, friendly and even placed our bottle back into the cooler to keep cold. And, I would totally go with a bottle here is in a group or just alone, as you can take it with you. And, a fantastic Rose for $30?! Amazing! Oh, absolutely one more thing, the large trees out front perfectly shade the outdoor space, so on a 80 degree or more day, it's cool and shady. Didn't get to try the pizza or flatbread, it looked so good, as they ran out, but next time! read more

An over-served patron screamed a racially charged troll at me, twice while I was attempting to taste my rosé. Being a minority in Portland, America leaves one susceptible to racist trolling bordering on actual racism. When you scream 'we don't serve your kind around here' twice to the only brown man in the room, is it racism, or just a joke? If the attacker is a 70 year old woman? The real tragedy is the bartender ignored it. Granted, she was (cliche warning) young and inexperienced with the social nuances of patrons who have had too much to drink, and the history or segregation and racial exclusion in white public spaces ie wine bar. Rosé, average. Racism, both overt and complicit: shockingly over the top, and all of Hawthorne suffered in my book because of it. It hurts to say. read more

Today we saw a great review of a new place on Nextdoor, so we checked it out. Their focus is on Italian wines, while still appreciating our regional Oregon and Washington wines. The charcuterie board and flat breads were delicious. The ambiance is great for a first date or becoming a regular, which we hope to do. One of the owners, Emma, pays attention to the minute details. Stopped in here after a long time away from Portland, just looking for a wine spot to get out of the rain on my second day back home. I was so impressed with the ambience. Exactly what I was looking for. Calm and quiet, nicely lit with lovely decor and comfy chairs. Amazing music played live by a lovely man with a guitar who just had the smoothest voice. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about wine and her palette is obviously extremely refined. She was able to recommend a couple of wines to me that just tickled my fancy in a way I'd never experienced before! Lovely. Will be back. read more

What a delightful surprise! I stumbled on Nosa this week and decided to stop for a dinner salad and glass of champagne. Both were delicious. Luckily, they have bottles for purchase so I bought a champagne to bring to a friend. Two days later I returned and found myself equally charmed and impressed with the food and found the intentionality and effort that the owners put into their bistro/wine bar so refreshing. Freakin LOVE Naso!! First off the place is so cozy and sexy but not real fancy. Such a great addition to the neighborhood. The wine selection is phenomenal and that's including the price. Their charcuterie boards are beautiful and have THE BEST selections of cheeses, meats, spreads, etc. And to top it off it's also a retail market where you can buy everything you try. We got the caviar which tasted like umami buttery deliciousness and worth every penny. Lastly the service is extraordinary, Emma's wine knowledge is insane along with her mind blowing palette for pairings. I highly recommend going to Naso. read more

An unusual trip, thru the senses with Emma @NASO.pdx When you go to NASO, look for a tall drink of water named Emma, the proprietor and Guild Certified, Level 3 Sommelier - I learned after asking a few questions. Like, how do you know so much about all of this? Emma's knowledge about some of the finer details concerning food & drink is expansive. I have only met 1 or 2 people, (i'm 70), with a true pallet. It's like perfect pitch, only a few people have it. The sense of taste and smell is accentuated in these genotypes. Aside from the warm atmosphere, the gorgeous assortment of retail and a curated bottle selection for takeaway - there are special plates and pairings offered for the famished. There's something about Emma's combinations and pairings that speaks to alchemy. Smell is the only sense that can actually modify the brain, (olfactory bulb), on impact. SO, who knows what can happen. I'm betting you'll be delighted. 5 star all the way! read more

Had a lovely time at Naso with a friend who lives in the neighborhood. The ambiance is fantastic and was enhanced by a talented musician who played guitar and sang familiar songs that make you want to sing along. I wanted something sparkling to start and was presented with tastes of two options. Then, when my friend arrived we shared a bottle of Riesling (I'm generally not a fan of Riesling but it was superb). The pizza with homemade pesto was so good! Visited this wine bar recently with my husband. I like the dark color scheme, but not all the fake plants. Decent wine list. Insanely overpriced food. They have an acorn squash on the menu for $30. The service was not bad. But the manager and the other employee on shift were behind the bar drinking wine and schmoozing with a dude sitting at the bar. I am not a fan of watching employees, who are supposed to maintain somewhat of a professional vibe, drinking with and hanging out with one customer, while mostly ignoring all the other customers. My partner and I set our wine down to talk for a few minutes, and when we both went to grab our glasses, they were FULL of fruit flies. Full. Swimming in the glasses. I mentioned the fruit flies to the staff member, and he just said oh, yeah, we know. I guess if you are throwing them back behind the bar, who cares about fruit flies in $15 glasses of wines!
