This was a very underwhelming experience- from the food to the drinks to the service. Nothing was particularly bad, but everything felt like it could have been better. I'm usually a big fan of a good cheese plate, but the selection here was surprisingly unappealing. We ended up regretting that order, which is not something I say often about cheese.The drinks were also well below expectations. We had originally planned to stay for a full meal and order more drinks, but after the first round, we decided it wasn't worth spending the rest of the evening here. Service was fine, and I can't really fault the staff for anything in particular. Unfortunately, though, there just wasn't enough about the overall experience to make me want to come back. We knew St. Jack was the date night spot. A place where they actually encourage you to stay, relax, and indulge. But did you know you can get apps and split the huge smash burger with fries that might as well be the hay of the gods. Yes. Walk in on a Wednesday (probably other days too) to SJ's and get the same immaculate service and a beast of a burger. Week instantly enhanced. Came here with friends for a friend Birthday. We ordered steak and salad. They dont have lots of options for people who dont eat pork. The food was good and our waiter was friendly. The atmosphere was nice. The one thing I didnt like was it was my friend birthday and they said they have a surprise for her. Nobody asked for this. As for the steak It was actually pretty good. The sauce was good sauce, too. I wish it came with a salad instead of fries. But it was still good. I did get a salad, but I didn't take a picture. It was weird. I was disappointed with the birthday ice-cream because it wasn't free ($4). They offered it and said, we do something special for birthdays, but then I looked at my receipt and I had to pay for it. I've been to many expensive restaurants, and I've never had to pay for birthday treat. Overall, the experience was nice. That was the only downside, and the salad was weird. I came here during the pandemic a few times eating outside, and finally made it back to eat inside (although with the nice summer weather they do have a few tables on the sidewalk). This is a stellar French bistro that's not pretentious with a friendly staff and cute cozy decor. Everything we had was quality stuff, and my entree was the mushroom vol au vent, which is a puff pastry shell with mushroom cream, topped with a nice contrast of greens dressed in a vinaigrette. There crudo dish was fresh, and I'm always a sucker for a coffee-based cocktail (the "My Friday" with cold brew and vodka). My friend had Cotes de Porc and it was a lot, so I tried a few bites and the pork was nicely cooked and classic combination of peaches and mustard. We received a warm welcoming and sat quickly. We stumbled upon St Jacks after we tried champagne poetry and they were slammed for an event. They were amazing and custom worked up a menu to accommodate one of our party that had extreme allergies. Very accommodating. Mussels were heavenly. Cooked perfect with impeccable flavor. The burger was juicy and flavorful. Fries were just ok. Steak frites had amazing flavor and was tender. Loved the ambiance and the vibe of the bar. Downsides were it was pretty toasty inside on a summer night. We were about to head down to salt and straw and the waiter heard it's our friends birthday and asked if we could hold up a couple more minutes. Very tasty. The service was good, a little hands off/hard to get attention of staff. They also forgot to add the cumin seeds to half of the prawns we were served, though we didn't particularly mind. I thought the presentation of the prawns was very cheeky and clever. The bisque was tasty though the crab flavor doesn't come through very strongly. Amazing high end restaurant, waiters are top notch, they were very welcoming and professional. They set the table for each course and were super attentive to refill our drinks (not overbearing but always on time). The food? A+. I loved the seafood on the menu, a lot of it reminded me of the french influence on Vietnam. They also have a gigantic wax candle with what looks like has decades of use. After a series of unfortunate events tonight, I found myself back at St Jacks. And then discovered I was quite fortunate to be here! I just stopped by for a drink and a snack. But their menu quickly drew me in. The Half The World Away sounded intriguing so I started with that. It was very tasty, sweet but not too sweet. A masterful creation. Had to follow that with the Fall Y'all which was also well crafted and tasty. I'm a Manhattan fan so had to try the Jack's Manhattan and it was superb. I had a few small plates that were excellent. The prawns were absolutely fresh and scrumptious. Probably the best I've ever had. And the Butter lettuce salad was splendid (I don't have the vocabulary to do this place justice;) ) Took one look at the desert menu and could not figure out how I could possibly leave without having them all! I decided to try two of them. The lemon tart was sublime! Quite possibly the most delightful dessert I've ever had in my entire life (and I ain't no spring chicken!). The bartender told me the key is the meringue. It's an Italian meringue, crafted with extreme care. Omg it was fabulous. I seriously felt like I was Royalty. I'm sure there was a day when only Royalty ate this well! Followed that up with the chocolate mousse. Omg that was a Work Of Art (see pics). No way on Earth I'm saving some for later! The atmosphere is also delightful. Very warm and cozy. And classy. And service was terrific. Very kind and attentive and extremely knowledgeable, especially if you're a wine buff. Restaurant had good atmosphere, service was good. I ordered the Pork chop that was the special, but they just served the last one(6pm). I then ordered Steak and it was horrible, very tough. Waiter very nicely too back the meal and suggested the Duck. Well 35 mins later and after all of the rest of my party had finished their meals. The duck came under cooked. When the check came the waiter let me know that he did not charge me for the steak, oh yeah but did charge for replacement duck. Thanks. Will not return to this restaurant. read more

There are few places you can visit weeks, months, or years down the line, that will deliver with consistency and grace, like the first time you found your favorite bistro wandering the streets of Paris, every time. And here is one perfect example, a mainstay in the heart of NW Portland - warm, welcoming, familiar like neighbors, but elegant in that effortless French way. Like all great French restaurants, core dishes are executed perfectly, always available. Imagine chicken liver mousse actually being that silken, like richly churned European butter over a perfectly crusted baguette round, topped with a sweetly tart port-soaked prune underlaid by a layer of just-right Dijon. Grab a glass of Oregon's finest and a butter lettuce salad, and you could be immediately transported to European coordinates. The ultimate indulgence follows with Chef Aaron's Gougères - miraculous little bundles of joy. Perfectly crisped slightly sweet shells exploding into savory Gruyère slowly melting through each bite. Perhaps could have, should have stopped there, but the bavette steak frites is a staple that I won't leave town without. I prefer this cut for the crispy sear, which melds so beautifully with the red wine Demi- and a dip of béarnaise. I've been putting this one to the test and haven't found better, a classic among clones. We had a perfectly pleasant evening here a few nights ago! The interior is cute and cozy (without feeling crowded), the staff friendly and helpful, and the food was good. I don't know that we would go out of our way to go back to it, but we're also a touch snobby about French food. We ordered a variety of things- olives, gougeres, sugar snap peas, escargot, shared the steak frites, and had madelines for dessert. The gougeres, although very prettily presented was forgettable, and I wish the sugar snap peas had a savory crunchy component, rather than the sweet sunflower seed granola. The flavors of the escargot was delightful, but the texture wasn't quite right; I don't know how else to describe it but it was both chewy and too tender? The olives were good, and you get a big ole' pile. The steak frites was perfection; the steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare, and the bernaise sauce was absolutely divine. And the frites were well seasoned and had a nice crisp texture. The madelines were warm and tender and buttery- a perfect end to the meal. All in all, I would recommend the restaurant, but not sure we would go back. read more

What a wine list! I was thrilled to see the expansive French and local regional selections on their menu. This was my first visit to St. Jack and it was for a business dinner. I will certainly return with my husband for a date night in the near future. The food was incredible all around. We ordered a variety of starters to share while waiting for our mains - thankfully we did because the main dishes took quite a while to prepare and we would have been hangry. The plates principaux were all a little salty - thankfully I appreciate lots of seasoning! I ordered the Canard, which was gorgeous with a PERFECT sear/render and a beautiful blueberry sauce, and most of my colleagues thoroughly enjoyed their Steak Frites. The desserts were beautiful. We shared a Mango Pavlova and an order of the adorable Madeleines. I highly recommend either. Service could have been a bit more engaged but it's not worth docking a star from the review. The music was really loud and did not fit the atmosphere of the restaurant - perhaps they were trying to service the bar side of the space with the tunes rather than those ordering full meals? read more

We had an exceptional evening at St Jack. While there were a few awkward moments with the staff, the food made up for it. When we first arrived with a reservation, they didn't have a table for 5 ready for us, and tried to put us at a table for 4 with a person on the end. They adjusted after we asked, stating that the tables I asked them to put together were not available when we arrived; however, that was a little like putting it on the diner because they did know we were coming. I had written on the reservation that it was my son's birthday, but they seemed unaware until I mentioned it, and then he got a scoop of ice cream with a candle. We were a late seating at 7:30, but not the only table still seated when we left, and we didn't get any kind of a thank you or goodbye. All minor things, but they do affect the whole experience, especially when you are at a high-end restaurant. But the food, oh the food, was marvelous. We started with lovely oysters that were scrumptuous, went on the bread and butter, light and fluffy with the perfect level of salt. The Gougeres warm from the oven were amazing, as was the chicken liver mousse. I thought the tartar de boeuf was very flavorful, but if you are a traditionalist, as some of my family they didn't love it as much but still liked it very much. My husband had the Sole, and it was an amazing surprise and would be my choice if I ate there again. The moules were lovely, and the curry broth you just want to drink straight from the bowl. The steak frite well well-cooked and fries w/the bernaise sauce were lovely (though a tad bit salty). We indulged in all three of their desserts, and the table was split between the Strawberry Choux and the Meyer Lemon Coeur a la crème as the best. Both were exceptional. After having seen the owner appear on Chopped (unfairly eliminated in the final round!) my wife and daughter made reservations here before we shipped our daughter back to school after the Christmas break. We had a really wonderful experience. We shared the escargot and the chicken liver mousse. Both were outstanding - rich and flavorful. The mousse was creamy and decadent and the escargot was buttery and flavorful. And we received additional (free) bread when we ran out. My wife had the sole au saffron and said it was delightful. My daughter had the duck l'orange and loved it. I had the steak frites (bavette) and thought it was fantastic. Perfectly cooked and seasoned - and the bearnaise sauce added wonderful depth and richness. For dessert my daughter grudgingly shared her Chocolate Malt Mille-Feuille -- and it was quite the treat. The filling was rich and the pastry was crisp and sweet. My wife had the Tarte Au Citron and it was delicious. The service was attentive without being overbearing and everyone was very nice and friendly. The atmosphere is comfortable. We will definitely be back. read more

The food is decent but I don't know what is it that just can't get over the hump for 4 stars. FOOD The food is pretty decent but I wouldn't come back again even with its ever changing menu. During our visit, we got the steak tare tare, gourgeres, bone marrow and steak frites. Honestly, each of the dish is very unique and exquisite for the decoration and detail but the taste is just isn't there for me unfortunately. Steak frites were under seasoned and under cooked when it first came out (asked for med-rare but came out extremely rare). Steak tare tare are just okay at face value. Overall the food is just very meh. SERVICE The service here is fantastic. They waiters were warm and caring and checked in on us very often. On top of that, they were very helpful guiding us through the menu as well. ALL IN ALL, I personally think this place is very alright. Price to taste ratio just isn't there for me. Came in last night to have dinner with a girlfriend before she left town - so glad we picked St. Jack! Restaurant is cute, service was fine. We made last minute reservations & seated quickly, the staff didn't seem to mind we were still there after they closed which I hate doing personally, but there were several other tables still seated past 9pm as well and we hadn't finished eating yet. Our last foray at St. Jack was when the restaurant was located in southeast Portland. Their new digs on 23rd are sophisticated and a big upgrade. The menu remains rock solid with a mix of delicious Provençal fare. By far the shining item is the steak-frites, but the small plate options all make for a fun evening of family style dining. Our four-top group sat outside in the makeshift patio that bumps up on NW 23rd Street. You would think the constant stream of traffic would be distracting from such a nice dinner - it's really not. In fact, it feels very Parisian. The service is smart, sophisticated and super knowledgeable. We lucked out and had the wine steward as our server. Talk about a big win, he was crazy adept at navigating the menu and the wine selections. It made for a really nice meal. My only "complaint" - and it is more of a recognition of the sign of the times that is our modern economy and smoldering inflation - the prices seem a bit high. Alas, I'm sure St. Jack, like so many Portland eateries, is just trying to survive in this hectic world. read more

It reminds me of my time in France - and added bonus, was the French music that played while you dined! We ordered the: - Charade & Old Fashioned to drink ( very delicious and strong ) Appetizer: - Pommes Frites: perfectly seasoned fries with a delicious side of Aoli. - Scallop Crudo: in all honesty, we really did not like this dish. It accompanied the oysters that we also ordered, and I almost overlooked it being present. No flavor or flare. We did not finish them. - Oysters: very disappointed in the oysters. Probably the smallest and most lackluster that I've had in years. Also would have loved more of a complete side addition to them as well. - Bread and Butter: very delicious! Dinner: - Steak Frites: traditional dish and presentation. Nothing to write home about - The Mussels in white wine sauce: THIS DISH WAS THE STAR! Everything up to this point was "Comme ci, comme ça" / nothing stellar. However this dish was OUTSTANDING. The flavor, mussels, garlic and caper white wine broth - the best I've had in years! Super disappointing about this place. I did research about eating here as I went back to visit my father on a family trip. I had my wife and my daughter I look forward to eating the tureens and enjoying some of the French offerings because of a nut allergy I wasn't able to enjoy anything and they're uncompromising menu. Let us to where we weren't able to eat here. We did enjoy a beverage before they left but again it wasn't anything to write home about lotta people in the neighborhood said that the quality of the food changed and the restaurant and change the time has gone by. My girlfriend chose St. Jack for our anniversary dinner after seeing it on Resy's Hit List. When the day came, we were congratulated on the occasion multiple times throughout the night. Having visited Paris last year, standards were a little high in regard to food and it was unfortunately not met. The moules marinieres was our least favorite dish of the night, although generous in portion, the alcohol wasn't cooked down enough in the sauce. Tables were a bit too close together for our liking. I always forget how casual Portland is. My expectations for St. Jack were French bistro, diners looking chic, waving their hands around to emphasize a point. Nope, St. Jack is bare wooden tables, servers mingling with diners who are dressed for a long hike into the wilderness. There are no Hermes scarves at St. Jack. Our server Shelby, became part of our family before the evening was over. He was engaging, intelligent, and an integral part of the gestalt at St. Jack. Food was universally good. The pate en croute reminded me of France. It was not overly "meaty," thick, like many prepared in American kitchens. St. Jack's version used finesse, a light French touch in their preparation. Chicken Liver Mousse was a wonderful spread for the delicious baguette. Ooh La La! St. Jack's hamburger was very good, large but thin, not thick like many American restaurant burgers. It was easy to digest without a mess. My mussels were devoured, and the pig in me soaked a baguette in the sauce after the mussels were all gone. Fries, Pomme Frites, whatever you want to call them, were fantastic! St. Jack's dining platform was Covid aware, most of the tables outside, warmed by heaters. Inside, St. Jack seemed empty, tables spaced accordingly. We had a horrible table, a two top tucked away in the corner, with no sight lines. Fortunately, Shelby and the wonderful food made up for our isolation. St. Jack will be fun to return to when Covid is defeated and our world returns to a semblance of normality. read more

A lot of the dishes, I was confused whether it was supposed to be cold? Hot? Lukewarm? But it was not even lukewarm. Just some weird mediocre, not here nor there temp. The beef tartare was alright. 3.5/5 I think the beets kinda messed up the dish. The butter lettuce was more negative than positive. There was a lot of "stuff" in it, but nothing really added to the dish. The beef also didn't have the usual rich flavor. It was overall a pretty flat dish. Butter lettuce salad. 2.5/5 I could have made a better salad. Lazy is how I would describe it. If you Google butter lettuce salad, then you see pictures of lettuce with radish, avocado, and croutons. Which is exactly what this was. Also, the vinaigrette wasn't very tasty. Gougeres. 3/5 The flavors are reminiscent of Ritz crackers. The cheese inside was like lukewarm. And the bready part was...kind of cold. The best thing about this dish was the way it looked. Turnip dish. 3/5 Aggressively sour, reminiscent of white vinegar. The cookery of the turnips were neither here nor there. Are they supposed to be raw? Are they supposed to be cooked? The white stuff was...interesting but not sure what it added to the dish. Rabbit 3.75/5 Very dry. Good gravy saved it. Some acid in there, which made it more interesting. Did like the mustard seeds. For the price though...should have been delicious. Missing the yummy factor. Liver mousse: 4/5 The only dish that was worth getting. The mustard is nice and sharp, strong. The liver mousse was done well. The prune jam was also well executed. Overall a lovely evening - the entrees (duck and sole) were the stars, followed in close second by the warm petit madeleines (do not skip those!). Service was terrific. A little disappointed with some of the appetizers, however (hence the 4, not 5, stars). They are truly in the 3-4 bite category across the board (hamachi cru was 3 pieces; the veal tartar was maybe 4 small spoonfuls; the salsify was 3-4 pieces of veg, etc. etc.), but they are not proportionately priced. The entrees and desserts are far more generous, and worth every penny. If we come back we'll skip the appetizers and maybe order extra entrees (and frites!). read more

If it weren't for the price I would likely give this restaurant a 4, but the cost of the entrees are just not justified. Its a casual French bistro with excellent attentive service. Cocktails were ok so I would stick with the wine list as we enjoyed a nice French bottle with our meal. Everything was overpriced and the taste of the food didn't compute with the menu price. I recall my husband enjoying the escargots. Not my favorite, so I passed on this one. The foie gras tart, which sounded absolutely delicious, was a decidedly boring presentation of foie gras with a shortcrust pastry and apple gelee that added little to nothing to the foie. For $35 its hard to recommend. For entrees, my husband and FIL had the steak frites, which needed alot more bernaise sauce and a better cooked steak. I split the canard with my MIL as we had a number of starters. The canard was cooked beautifully and had a delicious taste, but the sauce accompanying it was too sweet and a collard greens side (I love collard greens) for an entree that was close to $50 seemed insulting. Aside from the duck and collards there wasn't much else on the plate. Anyways, I love French food and wish this restaurant would stop attempting to be a fine dining experience and embrace what it could be- a really nice casual French bistro. read more
